Elvis Forde is no stranger to success on the track and field circuit. A former All-American and conference coach of the year, Fordes years of experience, both running on the track and shaping student-athletes, have proven he knows how to push programs to a higher and successful level.

Forde enters his ninth season as Illinois States head track and field coach. The native of St. Andrew, Barbados, is committed to taking his student-athletes to new levels of achievement and success.

For the past four seasons, Forde and his coaching staff have built a strong foundation for the ISU track and field program. The womens team has had success in several areas of the program. Brittany Smith qualified

for the NCAA National Championship in the shot put and qualified for the Junior World Championships, along with Sade Sealy who represents Barbados. The distance squad continues to make strides for the Redbirds. The sprinters, hurdlers and jumpers bring a lot of depth to the womens squad. The men have struggled over the past few years, but have the skills they need to succeed and should continue to improve in the Valley this season with several men qualifying for the NCAA Regional and Tim Glover, who qualified for the NCAA Championships and was a national champion in the javelin. A

lot is expected from this years squad. It is helpful to look at the past and learn from it, but Forde is looking forward to many successful seasons to come. This past season freshman Sade Sealy won the MVC Indoor and Outdoor 400-meter dash titles, while establishing school records in each event.

A true sprinter at heart, Forde works closely with the mens and womens sprinters and hurdlers. Two-time Missouri Valley Conference Female Athlete of the Year recipient Devon Williams amassed 11 conference titles and set school and Valley Championship records in the 60-meter dash, as well as school records in the indoor and outdoor 60-, 100- and 200-meter dashes in her four years at ISU.

Forde took over the helm of Illinois States track and field program August 2002, after a successful 13-year stint as head track and field/cross country coach at Austin Peay. While at Austin Peay, he was named the 2001 Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) Coach of the Year. During his time at APSU, he coached four academic All-Americans, an NCAA Outdoor All-American, and OVC Indoor Female Co-Athlete of the Year, an OVC Indoor Track and Field Female Athlete of the Year and an OVC Outdoor Track and Field Female Athlete of the Year. Forde was just as successful during his collegiate running days, becoming a four-time NCAA All-American, and a two-time USA Track and Field National Indoor champion. Fordes relay team still holds a number of SIU-C records.

Fordes collegiate career began at Murray State and finished at Southern Illinois. At Murray State, Forde was runner up in the 600-yards at the 1982 NCAA Indoor Championships earning All-American honors. He earned multiple All-America awards while running for the Salukis. In 1984, Forde was a member of Southern Illinois 1,600-meter relay team that set the NCAA record in both the indoor (3:07.15) and outdoor (3:00.78) competitions. As a senior, Forde was named Southern Illinois Outstanding Student-Athlete.

The SIU-C Alumnus was the mens 400-meter champion at the 1984 Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Championships, running a 45.91, a time that would have won all but three of the subsequent MVC titles since then and won the MVC Indoor Championship in the 600-yard dash.

After his collegiate career, Forde became a member of the national team for his native Barbados and competed in the 1984 Los Angeles and 1988 Seoul Olympics. In both 1986 and 1987, he won the National Indoor Championships at 600 yards. He still holds the Barbados national record in the 400-meter dash.

His determination and drive was what pushed him into the national spotlight from 1982-88. Fordes individual accomplishments during those years paid off in 1995, when he was inducted into the Southern Illinois Athletics Hall of Fame. According to Forde, it was a unique honor, since he was a Saluki for just two years.

When you think of all the great athletes that have gone to Southern Illinois and spent four years there, it is humbling because I wasnt even there for four years, said Forde.

Forde expects bigger and better performances from the womens team this year from cross country to the indoor and outdoor track seasons. The optimism stems from the number of returning student-athletes and the quality of the freshmen. Forde is expecting the teams to contend for the MVC championships this year as the womens cross country took the crown in the fall.

With the student-athletes understanding the work and commitment it takes to be a champion athlete, Forde feels this season will be one to remember. By being fundamentally sound, assignment correct and mentally tough, the Redbirds will be successful.

Forde and his wife, Beverley, and their two children reside in Normal, Ill. His daughter, Chant, attends Heartland Community College, and son, Kevin is a junior at Illinois State and member of the track and field and cross country team.

In October 2006, Jeff Bovee was named the head cross country coach and an assistant track & field coach in charge of distance at Illinois State, after spending the previous three seasons as the head cross country coach and assistant track & field coach at Central College in Pella, Iowa.

Since then, the 2011 Missouri Valley Conference Cross Country Coach of the Year has coached the distance crew to 62 All-Valley performances, including 12 Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championships:

His best year at the helm of training the distance runners came in 2011-12, where he led the womens cross country team to its first-ever conference title since the Gateway Conference was absorbed by the Missouri Valley Conference in 1992. This conference title came after years of building a successful womens program which finished second in 2009 and again in 2010. From 2007-10, he coached the mens team to four-consecutive top-three finishes in the Valley, with its best finish coming in 2007 when they placed second.

In addition to their All-Valley performances in cross country in 2012, Elise Sigg and Praught went on to finish in the top-25 at the NCAA Division I Midwest Region Cross Country Championship, earning All-Midwest Regional honors, a first since Sue Daggett claimed regional and national honors in 1996.

That was carried over into the indoor track & field season where he played an intricate role in developing Praught, who became the first NCAA Qualifier on the track since Christian Goy in 2002. Praught broke every Illinois State and Missouri Valley Conference record in the mile, running a personal-best 4:37.77 en route to a NCAA Division I Runner-up performance at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Boise, Idaho.

At the conference level, Bovee coached the womens distance medley relay to its third-consecutive conference title, leading wire-to-wire to take home the crown. Praught followed with her own championship in the mile, before Smoody won his second-straight in the 800-meter run. In all, the distance runners turned in nine All-Valley performances, with the womens distance crew scoring a total of 69 points.

Bovee continued his coaching prowess on the outdoor track, as his runners claimed two conference titles and turned in four Valley performances. In the process, the crew produced five NCAA track & field regional qualifiers (four in the womens 3,000-meter steeplechase), with Praught the only one moving on the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the steeplechase.

Bovees guidance helped Praught to an Olympic trials qualification, after she ran a 9:51.30 at the prestigious Mt. SAC Relays in the steeplechase, breaking the MVC and Illinois State records, while holding down the No. 6 spot in the world for three-consecutive weeks. That time was the second-fastest time in the collegiate ranks all season.

Off the track, Bovee has also shown his passion for academics, as his cross country teams have earned seven U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic honors (Men: 2008, 2010; Women: 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011). Individually, Praught was named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic team for her performances in 2011-12 and was also named Capital One Academic All-District V team in 2012.

During his tenure at Central College, Bovee coached four NCAA Division III All-Americans in track, one cross country All-American, as well as eight NCAA Championships qualifiers. In addition, he coached runners that earned USTFCCCA Division III All-Region honors five times.

Prior to coaching at Central College, Bovee was the head track and field and cross country coach at Parkland Junior College in Champaign, Ill., from 1996-2000. Bovee guided the mens and womens track & field and cross country teams to 12 regional titles. Bovees teams also placed in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) top-five in cross country and the top-15 in track & field during his final two seasons. More than 30 of Bovees student-athletes earned junior college All-American status, and 15 were named academic All-Americans. His successful tenure at Parkland also included coaching the NJCAA Womens Cross Country Individual National Champion in 1999.

Bovee received his Masters degree in physical education from Eastern Illinois in 1996, while he worked with the mens and womens track and field programs as a graduate assistant from 1995-96.

Bovee holds a USTFCCCA Level I certification in coaching and officiating. He is also a member of the American Alliance for Health Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) and the USTFCCCA.

Mike Spain enters his second season as the Illinois State cross country teams graduate assistant.

In his first year with the Redbirds, Spain assisted with the implementation of workouts with the distance runners throughout the course of the season, making sure the student-athletes were hitting their stride with each and every workout.

In addition, he played a key role in assisting head coach Jeff Bovee with the organization and consummation of training sessions that aided in the womens cross country teams 2011 Missouri Valley Conference Championship and Aisha Praughts runner-up performance at the 2012 NCAA Division I

Indoor Track & Field Championships in Boise, Idaho.

Prior to starting at Illinois State, Spain earned his degree in finance and economics from North Central College in Naperville, Ill., where he competed in both cross country and track & field.

A three-time All-American in cross country and seven-time All-American on the track, Spain joins a staff that has had the ability to see him perform over the past few years as he won in the Illinois Intercollegiate Cross Country Championships in 2010.

In 2009, he finished second at the NCAA III National Cross Country Championships, helping his team to their 13th national title. He followed

up that performance with a third-place finish at the 2010 NCAA III National Championships, posting a time of 24:24.6.

On the track, Spain won the 5,000-meter national title at the Division III Indoor Championships with a time of 14:17.42. If that wasnt enough, he took that momentum with him outdoors and won the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter runs at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships, finishing in 14:41.15 and 29:58.92 respectively.

His performances at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships earned him National Track Athlete of the Year honors and helped his team to their second-straight national title.

The Schaumburg, Ill., native is working toward a masters degree in sport management.
