Mission
CWU's College of Business faculty and staff create value and
opportunity for our students by focusing on quality in undergraduate
education at the Ellensburg campus and university centers in the Puget
Sound and central regions of Washington state. We accomplish this
through emphasis on excellence in teaching, strengthened by faculty
research and supported by professional service.
Vision
The College of Business will be recognized as a premier learning
community creating an environment in which students, faculty and staff
reach their full potential.
Statement of Conduct
The College of Business is a learning community committed to a set of
core values based on integrity, respect and responsibility that guide our
interactions

Association to Advance
Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB)
Only the best business schools earn AACSB International
accreditation, and Central Washington University is home to one
of them. When the CB received its accreditation from AACSB, it
joined the ranks of the best business schools in the world, where
less than five percent of the business schools globally are
accredited.
The AACSB is the longest-serving, largest global-accrediting
organization for business schools and serves as an informational
resource for students who need to consider the best business
schools for their academic goals. Employers recognize the
value of a degree from an AACSB-accredited school. When they
see a resume from a CWU College of Business graduate, they
will know it means that the applicant has studied under professors
who conduct research regularly, and possess knowledge of
current business ideas and methods. Bottom-line: graduates are
“job-ready”.

James Gaudino, President Central Washington University
Another milestone was reached this year, as the
College of Business (CB) established the Institute
for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (I4IE), the
fourth center and institute within the CB, joining the
Northwest Center for Organizational Research,
Northwest Center for Sport Business, and Supply
Chain Management Institute.
This is a significant achievement on several fronts:
the institute will offer our students another
opportunity to augment their education with
experiential learning, it will become a key economic
driver in central Washington, and it will assist CWU in commercializing
emerging research and development ideas from our faculty and staff. As
Central itself, out of necessity and by design, becomes more entrepreneurial,
this last aspect of I4IE will be vital.
I’m also delighted that one of the most renown entrepreneurs of our time,
and CWU alumnus, Roland “Sandy” Wheeler has agreed to serve as the
I4IE “Entrepreneur in Residence” and that CB Dean Roy Savoian will
become the first I4IE director.
On the occasion of this 19th Annual College of Business Honors Banquet, I
extend my sincere congratulations to all for these latest achievements and
others we will celebrate here tonight.
Marilyn Levine, Provost/VP for Academic Affairs &
Student Life Central Washington University
It is my honor to welcome you to the 2012 CWU
College of Business Honors Banquet. The College of
Business has had a very successful year, winning
awards for faculty research, student accomplishments,
and some key transitions.
Among these transitions are the return of Dean Roy
Savoian to the faculty , who alongside a stellar
faculty, has led the CWU College of Business to the
- 5 -
top 5% in the world, and will now be the Director of the Institute for
Innovation and Entrepreneurship (I4IE). The faculty, students, alumni, and
the wonderful advisory board are all helping to continue and expand upon
this growing reputation of quality.
I know that graduates of the program will be leaving with key knowledge
and skills that they will be contributing to the economic vitality in our
communities. I wish you every success in your careers as you go forward.
Roy Savoian, Dean College of Business
Welcome to the 19th annual College of Business
Honors Banquet. This special evening brings
alumni, family, and friends together to celebrate
the achievements and accomplishments of
students and faculty. We also welcome members
of the CWU administration as well as the
Advisory Board and Councils affiliated with the
College of Business.
We are pleased that tonight's speaker is Zabrina
Jenkins, Director of Corporate Counsel at
Starbucks Coffee Company. We look forward to
her presentation, "The Best Doesn’t Come Easy," and hearing about her
career path and what she has learned along the way. We thank Ms. Jenkins
for taking the time from her busy schedule to be with us and, as a
successful alumna, to share her experiences and perspective.
Tonight we honor our students and faculty for their excellence. The
College of Business faculty and staff are dedicated to creating value and
opportunity for our students by providing a high quality education at the
Ellensburg campus and university centers in Lynnwood, Des Moines and
the central region of Washington state. While all faculty members
contribute in a variety of distinctive and significant ways, we recognize a
few tonight for their excellence in teaching, advising, research and
professional service, respectively. In addition, some students are
recognized for their high level of academic achievement and others for the
quality of their contribution during an internship.
“Congratulations” to the many outstanding students and faculty in the
College of Business for a job well done!

Trevor Elliott Intern-of-the-Year, Des Moines
The Des Moines College of Business faculty is pleased to have Trevor
J. Elliott as one of the 2011-2012 Outstanding Interns-of-the-Year.
Trevor worked over the 2011 Summer Quarter gaining experience at all
levels of the insurance company Lovsted Worthington, LLC, in
Washington, and his performance in his internship was outstanding. In
his internship, Trevor was passionate about his work, deeply involved
in the business and demonstrated strong work ethic. He has been very
creative when dealing with analytical tasks, which impressed his
colleagues and managers. Trevor is an impressive individual to work
with. He is humble, caring, approachable, and an authentic leader. The
managers were so impressed that they offered Trevor a full time
position! We are very proud to have Trevor Elliott represent the College
of Business at Central Washington University, Des Moines.
Business Administration Faculty, Des Moines
Greg Koch
Intern-of-the-Year, Ellensburg
Greg Koch excelled in his HopeSource Internship. He was given
progressively more difficult tasks as he gained knowledge of the
various functions in the organization. His employer was very
appreciative of how Greg took on extra tasks and helped the
organization become more efficient. Greg was able to apply the skills
he had learned in the classroom to his working environment. During
weekly finance meetings, Greg would brainstorm with his supervisor on
ways to improve the finance department. He was always a positive
influence in the organization. Greg found the internship to be very
beneficial and enhanced his skills as an accountant. Congratulations on
a job well done!

Jonathan Kramp Intern-of-the-Year, Des Moines
The Des Moines College of Business faculty is pleased to have
Jonathan Kramp as one of the 2011-2012 Outstanding Interns-of-the-
year. Jon worked over the 2012 Summer Quarter at the Boeing facility
in Renton. Jon’s internship assignment was to take a number of
separate parts used in the construction of commercial airlines and
determine how those parts could be assembled by the part supplier
rather than at Boeing. Jon did an amazing job resulting in him being
offered a position before he ended his internship. We are very proud to
have Jon represent the College of Business at Central Washington
University, Des Moines.
Business Administration Faculty, Des Moines
Jose Macias Intern-of-the-Year, Ellensburg
Jose Macias took a leadership role early in his academic career and
worked with AB/Washington Beef in Toppenish, WA in 2011. His
internship included assisting with organizational recruitment, selection,
interviewing and staffing of employees. He evaluated and then
modified the orientation program for the entire firm. He also conducted
5 hour orientation sessions to new employees including training them
on safety, policy and procedures, history of the company as well the
new employee’s specific role in the company. Further, he also was
included in disciplinary sessions with employees and provided input on
disciplinary action by the firm. Overall, Jose was an enormous help to
Washington Beef and was able to become involved in many of the daily
human resource management functions. His fluency in the Spanish
language was a huge asset for the company, and they were extremely
pleased with his performance. Given that internships are intended to
provide education to the student and to assist the company in tasks that
need to be accomplished we conclude this internship was extremely
successful.

Kelly Anderson Outstanding Finance Student, Ellensburg
Ms. Kelly Anderson is a finance major with a minor in economics.
Originally from Kalama, Washington, she now resides in Ellensburg
while finishing her degree. Kelly has just started her job search,
primarily in the banking area. After graduation she plans to work for a
time, gain experience, determine where her long term interests lie, and
then possibly attend graduate school. Given her 3.44 overall GPA and
a 3.69 GPA in finance, she is certain to do well in grad school if and
when she decides to attend. In addition to her academic life, Kelly is
also a Mariner fan, Blazer fan, and proud parent to three dogs. Her
finance and economics professors in addition to her fellow students
unanimously applaud her as an outstanding representative of CWU.
Finance Faculty, Ellensburg
Cameron Bouta Outstanding Business Administration Student, Lynnwood
The faculty of the management department at the Lynnwood Center is
pleased to announce Cameron Bouta as the recipient of the 2012
Outstanding CWU-Lynnwood Business Administration student.
Cameron has distinguished himself by having not only the highest GPA
among graduating business students but one that is
considerably superior to the other candidates. Cameron is recognized as
a very hard working and very sharp student. He was also described by
Business Administration faculty as being a particularly good
contributor to classroom discussions. It is a pleasure for the Business
Administration faculty to acknowledge his accomplishments with this

Breahna Edwards Outstanding Marketing Student, Ellensburg
Breahna Edwards is an exceptional student whose ability to see the big
picture has made her the Outstanding Marketing student for 2012. She
has completed a double major in both marketing and supply chain
management giving her a unique perspective on the management of
both inputs and customer relationship output. Breahna has demonstrated
her skills in a number of different areas. She has excelled in marketing
coursework with her ability to combine analytical thinking with both
oral and written communication skills with a polish not often seen in
students her age. She has also been exceptional in her ability to apply
her coursework to the real world. She was part of an award-winning
case competition team in supply chain management and was such a
successful intern at Boeing that she already has a job waiting for her
when she graduates. Breahna is a stellar example of the complete
student that the Marketing Specialization wants to graduate. We wish
Breahna every success in her future and are pleased to recognize her as
the Outstanding Marketing student of 2012.
Marketing Faculty, Ellensburg
Jason Edwards Outstanding Supply Chain Management Student, Lynnwood
I am privileged to recognize Jason Edwards as the Outstanding Supply
Chain Management student at Lynnwood. I have had the pleasure of
having him in several of my Supply Chain Management classes for the
past year. I'd rate Jason's academic performance in my classes as
superior. He brings energy, enthusiasm and commitment to all of his
class activities. His combination of intelligence, commitment and
compassionate character will certainly make him a valuable member of
the business world. I am sure that he will excel in whatever job he
undertakes. I wish him the best of luck in his business career.

Rome Esmaili Outstanding Economics Student, Ellensburg
Rome Esmaili is a Managerial Economics major. Rome enrolled as a
freshman at Central in 2008, completing his general education courses
and coming into the Economics major in Winter 2011. Rome has done
very well in a diverse array of courses, with a GPA greater than 3.5. As
a Managerial Economics Major he has had an opportunity to take many
Economics electives, and Rome has consistently selected the most
challenging choices such as Econometrics and Forecasting. What most
impressed the faculty about Rome was his personal and professional
development. Rome started as a fairly typical CWU student, with many
academic and non-academic interests, but without much focus. By his
senior year Rome was the Economics Department tutor, helping
students in introductory classes master the basics of Economics. He
was an active participant in his upper division courses, impressing the
faculty with his enthusiasm for the discipline.

Megan Hammond Outstanding Management and Organization Student,
Ellensburg
Megan has demonstrated exceptional leadership throughout her tenure at
CWU. Her contributions have included university, college, department,
student club, and community level work. She is known and respected by
the provost (where she helped select the new dean of the College of
Business) to faculty (who are dazzled by her academic excellence) to
students (who are grateful for her leadership in student clubs). She has
excelled in both her coursework and her duties as president of the Society
for Human Resource Management (SHRM). Megan has been a model
student conducting herself with integrity and demonstrating a tenacious
work ethic. When presented with choices between less demanding
courses or project assignments, and options which are meaningful, but
which certain high grades or easy solutions are not assured, Megan takes
the more challenging avenue every time. This drive for doing right has
been noted by other students, faculty, and was recently noticed by several
recruiters. No surprise that Megan had little trouble winning a highly
sought after managerial position with a large national firm. We are
excited to watch her professional development beyond CWU and her
growing impact on the world in general. We are very proud of Megan.

Jeremy Hochstein Outstanding Human Resource Management Student,
Ellensburg
Jeremy has been an outstanding student during his tenure at CWU. He
has excelled in his classes and demonstrates maturity, leadership and
professionalism in everything that he undertakes related to the academic
domain of Human Resource Management. Jeremy is a thought leader
amongst his peers with a strong work ethic and detail orientation. He is
a dedicated student both in and out of the classroom. He is a pleasure to
work with as he is constantly trying to absorb and retain new
information. Finally, he is careful to make sound arguments based on
relevant data in both written and oral presentations. One of Jeremy’s
greatest strengths is his knowledge of integration practices of
technology and human resource management. As the field evolves he
has made himself ready to tackle this complex issue beginning with
enabling more technology of the student chapter of the Society for
Human Resource Management. For example, Jeremy set up new social
media tools (e.g., Twitter) to inform and connect with constituents of
SHRM. As HR faculty, we are very proud of Jeremy and anticipate he
will be an outstanding reflection of the HR program and CWU as he
begins his HR career.

in class. Andre is supportive of the learning environment, inquisitive,
and always professional. We are happy to recognize Andre as the

Chain Management faculty at the Des Moines Center wishes Ryan
every success in his future career.
Supply Chain Management Faculty, Des Moines
Amy Mukhin
Outstanding Master of Professional Accountancy Student
Amy Mukhin describes herself as a “natural born leader who is patient
and persistent,” that is no doubt the consequence of being the eldest of
13 children in her family. Her professors in her MPA courses can attest
to the persistence, having experienced her questioning and probing into
the topics being discussed in their classrooms. Her persistence reflects
her passion for learning about accounting and her goal to gain
employment in corporate accounting after completing the CPA exam
this year. Despite her current focus on her education, Amy is also
passionate about traveling around the world, raising small breed dogs,
and spring cleaning. No doubt those interests will help in her longer
term goal of joining the ranks of her professors by becoming a college
educator.

Mingfeng Peng
Outstanding Accounting Student, Lynnwood
The CWU-Lynnwood Center Accounting faculty are pleased to select
Mingfeng Peng as their 2012 Outstanding Accounting student. Since
coming to the United States 10 years ago from China, he has managed
to master the English language – and obtained a college education. At
CWU-Lynnwood he has excelled in his upper division accounting
classes and will be graduating with an almost perfect GPA. His plans
are to go on for the MPA and to pass the CPA Exam. With his strong
work ethic, Mingfeng is expected to become an outstanding addition to
the accounting profession.
Accounting Faculty, Lynnwood
Heidi Ribail Outstanding Supply Chain Management Student, Ellensburg
Organization and attention to detail are attributes that will serve Heidi
Ribail well in her future career endeavors. Heidi is completing her
business degree this spring with an impressive 3.7 GPA specializing in
Supply Chain Management. Heidi identified her interest in the supply
chain area a little over two years ago. Since that recognition she has
actively sought opportunities to apply the concepts and skills she’s
acquired in the classroom. In spring 2011 Heidi and four of her
colleagues completed a sophisticated inventory analysis for a billion
dollar global pharmaceutical company. During a summer 2011
internship, she initiated efforts to improve freight utilization for a
Yakima-based distributor of tools and hardware. In Fall 2011 she
engaged the hospital where she works in a lean six-sigma project. The
project she and three of her colleagues completed identified significant
savings in time and cost associated with patient transportation in
preparation for surgery. We’re confident Heidi has some great
adventures in store as she transitions to industry. We’ll be looking
forward to hearing about her future successes.

Distinguished Faculty
A major event annually at CWU is the selection of the Distinguished Univer-
sity Professor for Teaching, for Research/Artistic Accomplishment, and for
Public Service. These Distinguished Faculty Awards are the highest awards
attainable at the university and represent the highest level of performance. The
awards are overseen by the CWU Faculty Senate through a nomination process
and funding for awards (for each category) is generously provided by the Of-
fice of the President. Twelve CB faculty have been honored as Distinguished
University Professor. Robert Carbaugh is the only faculty member from the
college to earn the awards twice—once for teaching and once for research.

Good Evening to All,
I am unable to attend tonight’s CB Honors Banquet due to a much
needed knee replacement surgery on April 30. I am disappointed to
miss this important evening of recognition and celebration. I want
to express a special “Thank You” to the many people who contrib-
uted to the successes we have achieved during the past 14 years. It
has been a privilege serving as the Dean of the College of Business
and working with such highly competent professionals on all levels
in the College, at CWU and in the business community. I believe
strongly that the motto of Trinidad still applies -- “Together We As-
pire, Together We Achieve.” I look forward to serving as a faculty
member in the College for the next few years.
Cheers, Roy
