a bit about concert etiquette…a bit about concert etiquette…a bit about concert etiquette…a bit about concert etiquette…
Music concerts are very special events, whether they are professional or educational. Rarely in one’s daily living does one encounter history being recreated. Every work of music performed here tonight is a piece of history and the performing students serve as a bridge between the music’s creator, the composer, and you, the listener. Thus, tonight’s concert is an encounter which should be treated with the same respect as one would show while visiting a museum or other very special place. The 3 C’s of Concert Etiquette are:
COMMON SENSE CONSIDERATION
COURTESY It is best to arrive at the auditorium at least five to ten minutes ahead of the scheduled concert, find your seat, take a program, and be seated. Conversation with companions or those seated nearby is appropriate and welcome, but as soon as the lights dim, discussion should cease. During the performance, you should not eat, drink, or talk. If you are suffering from a cough, discreetly unwrap a cough drop. If your small child begins to “melt down”, out of consideration of other audience members, please quietly dismiss yourself to attend to your child. We are producing a professional recording of the concert this evening so during a performance please remain quiet. As a general rule, it is imperative you stay seated while the players are performing, except in cases of dire need or emergency. Please do not leave the auditorium while a band is performing. A considerate audience member will also turn off their pager and cell phone before the concert begins, as well as those annoying watch alarms. There are many occasions for you to applaud in a concert, but never confuse a concert with an athletic event. When the conductor walks onto the stage, applaud politely and then allow the music to begin. Follow your program and do not applaud between movements of a multi-movement work. If you are unsure about when to clap, follow the lead of the experienced audience members around you. As a courtesy to the other students, please stay for the entire concert, even if your child performed first. These rules are really quite simple. Thank you for making the best concert atmosphere possible for your child and the McGavock Band. Your presence here tonight helps keep public school music alive in America’s Music City.
