2012 Women’s Soccer

The High Point University women’s soccer team returns an experienced squad in 2012 that will look to win its third Big South Champi-onship in four years under head coach Marty Beall.

“I am very excited about the team we have put together for this season,” Beall said. “This is a veteran team. It is a different experience for us this season in that we don’t have to rely on our freshmen to come in and play big roles. They will have to opportunity to come along gradually and the pressure will not be as great for them to perform right away. There are still a few that will challenge for significant playing time, but the core of our team and the experi-ence we have gives this season a different feel.”

The Panthers return 18 letter winners and seven starters from the 2011 squad including All-Big South selections Janay Whittaker, Kelli Joline, Becca Hemby and Sammy Vercellino. Four of the HPU’s top five scorers will return in 2012 led by Joline who finished with nine goals and three assists in 2011.

High Point finished the 2011 season with an 8-10-3 overall record and a 6-2-2 mark in Big South play. HPU’s defense played a big role in the team’s success as the Panthers posted seven shutouts including six in conference play. High Point allowed just six goals in 10 confer-ence games for a 0.57 goals-against average. High Point fell in extra time to Liberty in the Big South Quarterfinals making it the first time under Beall that the Panthers did not win the Big South Championship.

“Not reaching the championship was something that I believe really burned our play-ers,” Beall said. “I think that helped us have a very successful run playing against some top level teams during the spring. It really showed how hungry our returners are to get back to a championship-level performance.”

High Point will once again be considered one of the favorites to win the Big South after being selected third in the Big South Preseason Poll. HPU received two first place votes and 121 points to finish just behind Campbell and Radford.

Following the graduation of All-Big South goalkeeper Andrea Ritchie, High Point will feature a new face between the pipes in 2012. Junior Jesse May is the favorite to fill Ritchie’s spot, but she will be pushed by freshman Ivy Cocklereece. Sophomore Natalie Giudici will also provide depth after joining the team late last season.

“We are very confident in the goalkeepers

we have here,” Beall said. “All three have come in ready to play and their training environment is extremely competitive. They are out there ev-ery day as a group constantly getting better.”

May played in five games last season and finished the season with five saves and a 1.74 goals against average. In two seasons, May has played in 10 games and posted a 1-2-2 record and a 0.97 goals-against average. She will bring an added level of athleticism to the position that allows her to cover a great deal of space in net.

Cocklereece played at Forsyth Country Day School in nearby Winston-Salem, N.C. She was a five-year letter winner and was named to the North Carolina All-State team as a senior. Though smaller in stature than May, Cocklereece has great speed and awareness in goal which allows her to excel at shutting down shooting angles.

DefenSeThe Panthers will feature an experienced

backline in 2012 that will be led by two All-Big South selections in center back Janay Whit-taker and right back Sammy Vercellino. Sopho-more Alise LeCompte will step into the starting lineup to fill the spot vacated by Brielle Spencer while junior Brooke Lisson will slide back from the midfield to take over at left back.

“We are returning an experienced backline which should pay dividends for the program in

the upcoming season,” Beall said. “We are re-ally stressing our team defending and are able to build that off a veteran backline. Janay Whit-taker is a senior captain and has been a fantastic leader. She will guide a talented group of de-fenders who we feel can take us far.”

Heading into her final season with the Pan-thers, Whittaker has cemented her position as one of the top defenders in the Big South. The center back has twice been named first-team All-Big South and was runner-up to Radford’s Taylor Drake in the voting for 2012 Big South Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. She will be joined at center back by LeCompte who was the first defender off the bench in her freshman season, playing in 21 games with eight starts. The sophomore is a tall presence in the back that can control balls in the air. She has great field vision and a strong leg which allows her to avoid pressure and start the attack from the back.

Vercellino has proven to be a dangerous two-way player at right back in her first two seasons with strong one-on-one defending skills and an ability to get forward and join the attack. Last season, Vercellino started 17 games and finished fifth on the team with six points on two goals and two assists. Lisson played in all 21 games with 12 starts in the midfield in 2011 but will slide back to left back in 2012. She has a strong leg and is one of the best on the team in putting a cross into the box.

High Point will benefit from great depth along the backline in 2012 with talented re-turners such as Shannon Quackenbush and Jenny Ashurst as well as freshman Amy Burch expected to provide quality minutes off the bench for the Panthers.

Quackenbush missed the 2011 season with an injury, but has returned in good form in 2012. She is a skilled defender who can play both at centerback and on the outside. Ashurst is entering her second year with HPU and will be counted on to backup both Vercellino and Lisson after appearing in 17 games in 2011. Burch is a skilled outside back who comes to High Point from Boiling Springs, N.C. As a member of the Charlotte Soccer Academy she helped lead the team to three North Carolina State Championships.

Other defenders that could see time in-clude senior Alex Cranston and freshmen Ra-chel Lovely, Katie Roman, Jo Platt, Colleen Deardoff, Hannah Smith and Kelsey Perrell.

MIDfIelDHPU returns three midfield starters from

2011 in senior Katie Harris and juniors Kelli Joline and Becca Hemby. The trio will be joined by junior transfer Taylor Parker and sophomore Melissa Sweredoski to form a talented group that can both defend in the center of the field and get into the attack.

“I am very excited about our midfield unit this season,” Beall said. “It is a group that knows how to both possess the ball and defend prop-erly. When we win the ball they know how to generate a quality attack. We will feature several creative players and the overall level of competi-tiveness in the group is very high.”

Katie Harris moved into the starting lineup in the defensive midfield in 2011 and proved to be a rock in front of the backline for the Pan-thers. She started 16 games and often served as the junction between the defense and offense. She will be joined by Sweredoski who saw valu-able minutes off the bench in her first season, playing in all 21 games with six starts. One of the most fit players on the team, Sweredoski is capable of covering a great deal of space in the midfield. She will combine with Harris to form

a potent partnership just ahead of the defense. Two other players expected to contribute at

defensive midfield are redshirt-freshman Claire Kelly and freshman Becca Lisson. Kelly played in six games in 2011 with three starts before an injury cost her the rest of the season. She returns in 2012 and gives the Panthers a strong midfielder who can play box-to-box. Lisson, sis-ter of junior Brooke Lisson, was an ESPN Rise All-American at Wando High School and the 2011 4A Player of the Year in South Carolina.

The attacking midfield is comprised of a trio of dangerous players in juniors Kelli Joline, Taylor Parker and Becca Hemby. Joline led HPU in scoring in each of her first two sea-sons. In 2011, she finished with a team-high nine goals and 21 points. Hemby finished just behind Joline with 13 points on five goals and three assists and was one of four players to start all 21 games. Parker joins High Point from the University of Kentucky where she played for two seasons. The midfielder played in 36 games with 21 starts and recorded three goals and six assists. In her freshman season, she finished sixth all-time among UK freshmen in assists and 10th in shots.

Seniors Danielle Schepler and Jenny Butler will also see time in the attacking midfield and will be expected to provide depth in the center of the park. Schepler appeared in 16 games in 2011 and had one goal and one assist. She is a technical player and a skilled passer. Butler pos-sesses a big leg and is one of the Panthers’ go to players on a free kick. She played in 20 games last season and had two assists.

Freshman Courtney Butterfass will pro-vide added depth to the midfield.

fORWaRDSThe forward position will be led by return-

ing starter Jacky Kessler who will headline a talented group of players including sophomore Sarah Sermonet and freshmen Jill Graff, Aleyha Johnson and Sammy Dean.

“We have several dangerous players at the forward position who I believe will really help

run our offense this season,” Beall said. “Jacky came back in great shape and is playing some of her best soccer and we have more depth at the position than we have had in the past.”

Kessler played in 20 games with 13 starts and finished third on the team with eight points on two goals and a team-high four assists. She is a speedy attacker with dangerous finishing abil-ity and is being counted on to make a jump in her second season.

Sermonet saw time in 20 games during her first collegiate season and will start the sea-son as the first forward off the bench in 2012. The sophomore possesses dangerous size and a strong leg. She will give the Panther attack a different look.

Graff, Johnson and Dean are a trio of freshman additions who will be counted on to provide quality depth up front. Graff is a skilled technical player from Manchester Central in New Hampshire, where she was a four-year let-ter winner. Johnson and Dean are both speed options off the bench that can pressure the op-position’s backline. Johnson played at William G. Enloe High School in Raleigh, N.C., and was one of the top scorers in North Carolina in 2011 with 34 goals. Dean was a three-year letter winner at Broadneck High School in An-napolis, Md., and was named to the MACS All-State team as a senior.

Marty BeallHead Coach • Alma Mater: Francis Marion ’03 • First season at HPU: 2009

Marty Beall is entering his fourth season at the helm of the High Point women’s soccer team. In his first three seasons, he led the Pan-thers to 26 wins, including a 16-8-4 record in Big South play.

In 2011, Beall led High Point to a 6-2-2 record in the Big South, matching the program record set the previous season for conference wins in a season. After just three seasons, he is tied for the most Big South wins by any HPU women’s soccer coach with 16. A record six players earned All-Conference honors for the Panthers as Kelli Joline and Janay Whittaker were both named to the first team and Becca Hemby, Andrea Ritchie, Katie Taber and Sammy Vercel-lino were all named to the second team.

Beall began his time at HPU with a bang, leading the Panthers to back-to-back Big South Championships in 2009 and 2010.

In 2010, High Point tied its own Div. I re-cord for wins in a season with 11 and went 6-2-1 in Big South play to earn a share of its first-ever regular season Big South Championship. HPU then went on to win three-straight Big South tournament games by identical scores of 1-0 to secure its second-straight championship and its third in four seasons.

Kelli Joline set an HPU Div. I single-season record with 11 goals, including one against Maryland in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, and was named first-team All-Big South in her first collegiate season. Three other players earned All-Big South honors as Whit-taker was also named to the first team and both Sara Rager and Vercellino were named to the second team.

In Beall’s first season, the Panthers recovered from a difficult start to the season and finished 4-4-1 in Big South play. High Point’s defense was a big key to the team’s improvement as the Panthers allowed just eight goals in their final 13 games and carried a clean sheet through the conference tournament. Marisa Abbott set an HPU Div. I record with 134 saves on the season. Laura Eldridge was named first-team All-Big South and Whittaker was named second-team All-Big South.

Beall’s teams have prided themselves on defense in his three seasons, allowing just 24

goals in 36 games against Big South opponents. With its three shutouts in the 2010 Big South Tournament, High Point set a new conference record with six consecutive shutouts in tourna-ment games.

During Beall’s tenure, High Point has played some of the best teams in the country. The Panthers have faced off against such teams as Wake Forest, North Carolina, Maryland, Duke, Virginia Tech, NC State, Clemson, West Virginia, Charlotte and UNC Greensboro. On Sept. 12, 2010, HPU earned its first-ever win over an ACC opponent with a 4-3 win over Clemson in Columbia, S.C.

Off the field Beall’s teams have demonstrat-ed excellence in the classroom. The Panthers were awarded the NSCAA Team Academic Award in both 2010 and 2011 and hold the highest GPA of any High Point team. Brielle Spencer was named the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year in both 2010 and 2011.

Beall came to HPU after coaching for 10 seasons at Francis Marion, including the last six seasons as the head coach. While at FMU, Beall helped transition the Patriot program from the Division II level to Division I. In his head coaching career, Beall owned a 56-44-7 record at FMU despite having to play outside a confer-ence and consistently scheduling nationally and regionally-recognized programs.

During his tenure at Francis Marion, Beall guided the Patriots to four double-digit win totals and four winning seasons. Under his tute-lage four players developed into National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Region performers including a pair of first-team selections. Beall’s pupils also garnered NSCAA/adidas All-America and Division I All-Indepen-dent team accolades.

Prior to becoming the Patriots’ head coach in 2003, Beall served four seasons at FMU as assistant coach to Murray Hatzler, who estab-lished the program in 1995. While an assistant, Beall helped lead Francis Marion to one of its two NCAA Division II national tournament appearances in 2000.

Beall spent two seasons (1997-98) as the women’s assistant coach at the College of Notre Dame in Baltimore, Md., before joining the

FMU program in 1999. In addition to his colle-giate coaching experience, Beall has also coached at the youth league, high school and club levels. He served as the Director of Coaching for the Florence Soccer Association and was the head coach of the South Carolina girls ODP staff for seven years

A two-year player at the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, Beall served as captain of the 1994 squad. He also played one season for the nationally-ranked Montgomery College in Rockville, Md. Beall was an All-State prep performer as a senior at Damascus (Md.) High School and played eight seasons for the Bethesda Soccer Club.

He holds a USSF “B” license and the Premier Diploma from the NSCAA and is an NSCAA Associate staff coach. He is currently on the Region III ODP staff and is the head coach of the Under-16 girls team at the Piedmont Triad Football Club.

A native of Damascus, Md., Beall (38) earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Francis Marion in 2003. He and his wife, Paige, welcomed their first child, Callie Rae, in 2012.
