IT’S oNlY So loNGbeFore a SMIle…IS JUST TeeTH.” There’s a reason why GT frames can be recognized without paint. Without decals. Without callouts. It’s not because we’re trying to be different simply for the sake of being different. It’s not because we’re trying to make the bike look sexy. It’s not to push a marketing agenda. It is because each of each frame we make is an honest reflection of how we ride our bikes, and what we feel they should be capable of.

Riding is about having adventures. Trying new things. Making mistakes. Going out of your comfort zone. Finding out what you’re afraid of…and living there for a while. It’s about defying convention, defying stero-types, and the idea that everything needs to be standardized, measured, and quantified in order for it to be fun. Riders who subscribe to this philosophy don’t need bikes with a skin-deep marketing story. They need bikes that can deliver on their promises. Bikes that can inspire them to make their own mark, or to claim their own stake. They need bikes they can trust; they need bikes that can help them earn Their Wings.


TrIPle TrIaNGleInspiration comes standard. The physical manifestation of our philosophy towards bike building, the Triple Triangle frame was first introduced 24 years ago to help both reduce unwanted lateral frame flex and improve ac-celeration. Triple Triangle frames quickly gained global notoriety not only for their responsiveness, but also for their legendary durability. Notoriety quickly succumbed to iconic status when, shortly after its introduction, a Triple Tri-angle frame became the first – and only – bike in the world to win a mountain bike world championship…in both X/C and Downhill disciplines. Featuring shorter chainstays and a wider, stiffer rear-triangle than a conventional hard-tail frame, Triple Triangle frames better resist lateral flex, ensuring that the rear wheel tracks predictably regardless of the punishment issued by either the terrain or the rider.


INDePeNDeNTDrIVeTraINless is More. If 40 years of bike building has taught us anything, it s this; complex bikes only guarantee one thing – they’re more likely to fail…right when you need them the most. Hence GT’s suspension philosophy; More-often-than-not, the simplest solution…is the best solution. The reason why most suspension platforms are so complex is because the force generated by the drivetrain (or the rider ped-aling) has some effect of the suspension, and vice-versa. Because these platforms have to account for this relationship, they’re ultimately forced to make a compromise between pedaling efficiency and suspension performance. Sound simple? It’s not. Arriving at a compromise isn’t easy to do. Make a system too active or plush, and the energy generated by pedaling will be robbed by the suspension. Make a system less active, and riders will wonder why you put suspension on the bike in the first place. What’s worse, the better these systems get at balancing these two attributes, the more complicated they become. Even if a system strikes an optimum balance, and works incredibly well (which a lot of them do), the additional linkages, shock-tunes, and pivots required result in more maintenance, more moving parts, more potential headaches…and more oppor-tunities for things to go wrong.Instead of developing a complicated system that made for fewer trade-offs between pedaling efficiency and suspension performance, we decided opted for a simple solution that eliminated the relationship between the two. The only system of its kind, GT’s Independent Drivetrain™ allows the suspension to function independently of the drivetrain, and the drivetrain to function independently of the suspension. The benefits? Because the system doesn’t have to strike a balance between pedaling efficiency and suspension performance, it doesn’t have to make compromises in either area. Because it’s an inherently simple design, it’s easier to set-up, ride, maintain, and trust. Sometimes…less really is more.


F.o.C.Don’t believe the Hype. A lot of the other bike brands employ carbon because of its impressive strength-to-weight characteristics. We can’t fault them for that. After all, Carbon can usually yield a pretty durable, über-lightweight frame. Our motivations with the material however, have always been slightly different. When we first started working with carbon nearly 20 years ago, we weren’t excited so much by its svelte nature as we were by the degree to which we could customize it. Although great for a lot of cycling applications, the characteristics of Alloy materials can be difficult to change, particularly if the change in question is small. Carbon, on the other hand, can easily be manipulated, enabling builders to achieve the exact strength and stiffness characteristics they want across every square nanometer of the frame. Even better, these changes often don’t require additional materials, mean-ing that a bike can get stiffer and stronger without a weight penalty. Bottom line: where our competition leveraged these advantages to build a lighter frame, we leveraged these advantages to build frames which had the exact riding characteristics necessary to earn the trust of riders across the globe.

Our proprietary methodology for Carbon frame fabrication, GT’s Force Optimized Construction reflects our com-mitment to this ideal. Using our own Finite Element Analysis software, we’re able to more closely examine the forces affecting a frame than many of our competitors. With this information, we’re able to see (and make) changes at an incredibly granular level, ensuring that our frames maintain the exact characteristics we want, and that riders have come to expect from us; characteristics which allow them to quit worrying about something which should be a given (like whether it will break), and focus more of their attention on what’s really important – their riding.


CHaSSIS TUNe1 + 1 + 1 = 4. No, we’re not bad at math. Yes, a bike can be greater than the sum of its parts. Just like the car guys, we use a combination of materials, fabrication techniques, proprietary technology, and geometries to tune our bikes, & to give them a specific ‘attitude’. The difference is that you won’t find our bikes sporting pointless gimmicks like a cheap-ass looking bat-wing and Chock-full-o’-nuts muffler on a ‘94 Geo Prism. This optimization across these four principal aspects of frame design is the what makes GT bikes truly unique, and the is the reason why for the past 40 years, we’ve been able to deliver on our promise to make bikes riders can trust to not only perform on the World Cup stage, but also to hold-up to the demands of the type of riding they face on an everyday basis.


SPeeD MeTal. IT’S NoTJUST For SCaNDINaVIaNS aNYMore. Materials. It’s really tough to get great-riding, lightweight bikes that hold-up to just about anything you can throw at them. It’s tougher still to build your namesake around this philosophy instead of just a few models in your line. And when you’re forced to use off-the-shelf materials to do so, the task becomes downright impossible.

Although our riders have long been known for achieving the impossible, we’d like to uphold our reputation as the brand which builds bikes which impossibly achieve. That’s why GT engineers use proprietary alloy and composite materials when designing GT frames. By specifying the exact criteria they need their alloy and composite materials to meet, GT engineers can develop frames which will meet the standard for durability we first set nearly 40 years ago.


CarboN MaTerIalS /Just like coffee makers use different blends of beans in order to achieve different flavors, GT uses different blends of Car-bon to achieve distinct riding characteristics, and to optimize our frames around a particular riding style.

XM blend: Used exclusively on the Fury, GT’s XM Carbon blend features a blend of intermediate modulus carbon with an exceptionally high strain-to-failure ratio. Although more flexible than a stiffer, more responsive Hi-Mod blend, this blend is a lot less fragile, and can bend appreciably before reaching its break point. To top it off, we incorporated GT’s proprietary Rockblock™ technology into the fibers on the underside of the down-tube. Made from the same bal-listic-grade Kevlar fiber that helps protect law-enforcement and military personnel all over the world, Rockblock™ helps ensure that the rocks and debris which are sprayed up from the front tire don’t cause damage to the bike’s downtube.

aMblend: Used exclusively on the Force, GT’s Am Carbon blend starts with an XM blend before being substantially lightened with the strategic replacement of intermediate modulus carbon with stiffer, snappier hi-modulus fibers in areas of the bike insulated from impact by GT’s Independent Drivetrain™ Suspension System. The result yields a frame which is durable enough to withstand grueling Enduro races like Mountain of Hell or the Freeraid Classic, which is still light enough to be used for an everyday trail bike.

Speed blend: In developing the NEW Zaskar and Zaskar 100, we’ve finally developed a hi-modulus Carbon Fiber Blend worthy of the bike’s namesake. Featuring a higher percentage of hi-modulus carbon, GT’s SPEEDBlend yields an exceptionally stiff and light frame, without the brittle characteristics typically associated with similar constructions. Our secret? The interspersion of intermediate modulus fiber in impact-prone areas, along with an F.O.C. informed layup. The result? A Hi-Mod carbon blend durable enough to be used on the Zaskar while still being light enough to be used on the GTr Team Road Frame.

alloY MaTerIalS /Changing the shape of an alloy isn’t exactly easy – at a minimum, you need alloy materials that’ll readily take the shape you want it to. That’s why GT has partnered with some of the world’s leading alloy and composite manufacturers to develop materials which are more easily manipulated into the shapes we want, and which, once set, don’t degrade or lose those shapes over time.

Xm Metal: Aggressive riding styles demand stiff, responsive materials that can direct power from the pedal to the wheel (or from the wheel to the shock), without being brittle. Xm Metal was designed exclusively for this purpose. Our most durable blend of alloy, XM Metal is also optimized for use in Monocoque construction applications - the alloy fabrica-tion technique we use to create complex frame shapes which make the frame or tube exponentially stronger.

am Metal: Similar in concept to Xm Metal, Am Metal is optimized for use in Hydroformed tubes. Because the process of hydroforming is different than that of monocoque, Am alloy blends are lighter than their more aggressive brethren, and maintain slightly more damp riding characteristics, making them a great choice for both shorter-travel dual suspen-sion bikes and un-sprung hard-tails.

Speed Metal: Strong enough for the Zaskar; light enough for a GTr, GT’s Speed Metal is arguably the highest per-forming (and most versatile) alloy composition GT’s ever used. Specially formulated to allow for exceptionally precise hydroforming techniques, Speed Metal allows for the creation and use exceptionally thin tube walls without any compro-mise in strength, unwanted flex, or impact resistance over our Am Metal or a traditional 6061 or 7000 grade alloy.

6061: The industry standard in alloy tube construction, many of our competitors start with this material where we move on to our own. After all, just because you don’t have a fortune to spend doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t be afforded a great ride.


CHaSSIS TUNe / FabrICaTIoNMore isn’t better. Making a bike stronger doesn’t always mean that you’ve got to use more material. It does mean that you’ve got to use stronger materials, and be smarter about how you use them. Tube shapes, diameters, and surface planes go a long way in making a stronger, more reliable frame. Unfortunately, a lot of bike builders pick a tube shape that fits their construction capabilities instead of picking a fabrication technique that yields the best tube shape for the bike (and ultimately, the rider). Not trying to call anyone out - it is what it is. Rather than restricting ourselves to a fixed set of shapes, GT employs fabrication techniques which enable us to optimize the shapes of our tubes and frames according to the riding style (and resulting stresses) for which they’ll be used. The result? Incred-ibly durable frames which don’t incur a weight penalty to be so.


CarboN FabrICaTIoNS /The cool thing about carbon? Its properties can be changed in targeted places. The downside of Carbon? In order to capitalize on its advantages, you’ve really got to have one hell of a dialed-in fabrication process. Said even more plainly – a Carbon frame is only as good as the years of experience you’ve got in developing it. Fortunately, GT began experi-menting with composites before most contemporary bike companies even existed. Our 20 year legacy of composite construction is manifested in our proprietary methodology of carbon fabrication – Force Optimized Construction.

GT employs FoC to build bikes according to one of three different fabrication techniques:

FoC Xm: Xm FOC optimizes our Xm Blend of Carbon to withstand the abuse of the UCI World Cup DH circuit. Instead of aligning grains in a purely minimalist fashion, Xm construction uses more layers of less aggressive grain di-rection to achieve a super stiff, super durable frame, which is both better insulated against impacts and which escapes the brittleness typically associated with super-stiff carbon frames.

FoC am: GT’s FOC Am fabrication uses less carbon with a more aggressive directional grain than its Xm breth-eren in order to achieve an equally stiff and responsive ride, in a lighter-weight package. Don’t let the weight fool you, though. Even though the Force Carbon, with 150mm of rear-wheel travel, is lighter than a bulk of the industry’s 120mm (or even some 100mm) bikes, it’s still strong enough to handle a good whipping.

FoC Ultra: Striking the optimum balance between strength, stiffness, and weight, FOC Ultra takes a minimalist approach to Carbon fabrication, using the fewest layers of hi-modulus Carbon possible to achieve a stiff, reliable, responsive ride. Don’t let the approach scare you – not only is FOC Ultra light enough to be used in peloton-ready machines like the GTr Carbon Team, but also it’s the fabrication process which X/C MTB Pros Céderic and Cécile Ravanel trust to deliver them 2012 Olympic berths in London.

alloY FabrICaTIoNS /Unlike carbon, alloys require a complex process to get more material where you need it. Luckily, we’ve had a little experience working with these materials, too.

Monocoque: Monocoque frames are built by taking two alloy sheets, manipulating them across multiple dimensions into ‘halves’ of a frame, and then welding them together to achieve the strongest, stiffest alloy frame possible. Because it affords the opportunity to make super complex tube shapes, and doesn’t use welds across areas of the frame that are prone to stress, Monocoque fabrication yields an incredibly strong, stiff frame structure ideally suited for the rigors of high-speed gravity riding.

Hydroformed: Instead of making frameset tubes stronger by adding more material, Hydroformed tubes undergo a process where a traditionally shaped tube or part is manipulated to direct metal away from high-stress areas of the tube, and towards areas which need to be re-enforced or strengthened. The result? A lightweight, lively responsive frame or tube that’s still strong enough to be worthy of the GT moniker.

butted: Like Hydroformed tubes, Butted tubes are traditionally-shaped tubes which - like Hydroformed tubes – fea-ture a thicker, stronger wall towards the ends of the tube (where the bike endures greater stress loads), and a thinner, lighter wall towards the middle of the tube. Butted tubes can be used as an economical alternative to Hydroforming, or can be Hydroformed for even greater weight savings.


CHaSSIS TUNe / DUrabIlITYDisposable Heroes. Not bikes. There’s a reason why the Zaskar is the only bike to win both a DH and X/C world championship title. There’s a reason why the Fury was the only full-carbon bike in competition at the Red Bull Rampage. There’s a reason why Andrew Cho was able to log a million vertical miles this past season…on one Carbon fiber bike. Where others look at where they can stream-line weight off of the bike, we constantly look for and address potential areas of weakness, and develop technologies we can incorporate to improve the longevity of our bikes, ensuring that riders can rely upon them to help them earn their wings.


CHaSSIS TUNe / DUrabIlITYTriple Triangle: GT was founded on the principle that real riders are looking for a high-performance ride that’ll hold up to the demands of everyday riding. These riders know that proven, tried, and true technologies will prevail over some flavor-of-the-month, weight-saving short-cut which could potentially weaken the bike. The Triple Trian-gle™ Frame is the physical manifestation of our commitment to these riders, and to this philosophy. Originally devel-oped to extend the frame life, stiffen the rear triangle and thus create a faster, more responsive ride, Triple Triangle™ has transcended its role as just another tech story, and become an iconic symbol of who we are, and what we stand for.

Forged elements and Pivots: Imagine you could take an alloy bike part, and manipulate it at a molecular level so that like wood, it had a directional grain to it. Sounds impressive, doesn’t it? Now imagine that you could not only do this, but that you could ensure that the directional grain is aligned in a specific manner which makes the part in ques-tion much stronger than an untreated part…and you’ve got a sense as to how GT crafts all of the components used in key stress areas of the frame.

We’ll be honest – GT isn’t the only company to use forged parts. That said, we are the only brand we know of to Forge (or optimize with FOC) every single linkage and pivot on all of our dual-suspension bikes. We don’t stop there. In keeping with our philosophy that riders need to be able to not only rely on our most expensive bikes, but on every bike at every pricepoint, we also forge other areas of the frame that are prone to constant abuse or stress, like head-tubes, bottom brackets, and dropouts. Some brands may think such details are superfluous. That’s cool…but GT certainly isn’t one of them.

Gusseted HT’s: Forging, material selection, and fabrication selection can do a lot to bombproof a frame. But when you’re trying to out-do Tyler by becoming only the second rider to ever land a triple-tailwhip on an MTB, beat EC at an Enduro race like the Mountain of Hell, or even win a National Master’s DH title (you’ll have to take down Halvy, GT’s BMX Product Manager)…well… sometimes a little extra metal…goes a long way. That’s why on select bikes, GT features Head-Tube and/or Down-Tube gussets, giving riders who embrace the Earn Your Wings Philosophy on a different level than most of us a little extra security.


CHaSSIS TUNe / HeaD TUbeS & GeoMeTrIeSrothnotHagar. Putting a bunch of great musicians together doesn’t guarantee that you’ll get a great band. Case-in-point: Van Hagar. Critical as the materials and technologies used in the construction of a frameset are, they need to be developed in concert with the key element which most affect a bikes steering and handling characteristics – its geometry. Great bands need both artists and chemistry; great movies need both actors and a script, and great bikes need on-point construction techniques and geometries.

In order to enhance each bikes intended handling characteristics, GT carefully selects the proprietary materials and fabrication techniques best suited for each bike’s geometry, and then pairs it with a headtube diameter which best meets the needs of the rider the bike was designed for. The result? A package that’s perfectly optimized for its intended riding style.

MICkHaNNaHWith a moniker like Sik Mick, one might expect a persona rife with attitude and a sense of entitlement. With Mick, nothing could be further from the truth. Mick’s raw, powerful, foot-out, flat-out riding style has earned him a reputation for being the one rider on the UCI circuit who can be regularly be relied upon to attempt what few others would even regard as possible. Content to let his riding do the talking, Mick’s quiet, un-assuming demeanor has earned both the respect of the riders on the circuit, and thedistinction of being the unofficial captain of the GT UCI World Cup Team.


MarCbeaUMoNTFew athletes have the skill, fitness, and reflexes to win a World-Cup Downhill event. Fewer still are also fit enough to hang with some of the World’s best Cross Country riders. Potentially three would seriously con-template running the same bike for both. Only one would actually do so...and demolish half the field in the process. A living contradiction-in-terms, Marc "Slugger" Beaumont is dedicated not only to his craft…bust also to having as much fun along the way as humanly possible.

leGeNDS.ICoNS.HeroeS.VIllaINS.A collective of riders who’ve re-defined how we compete, communicate, chronicle, and commune, the GT Wingmen are recognized across the globe as those who’ve helped push the envelope of what’s possible on two wheels.


HaNSreYDefine. Re-Define. Repeat. Outside of a blood-test, it’s lately been challenging to find positive things cyclists have done to help both grow and create awareness for their sport. With Hans, the challenge isn’t finding things he’s done to help grow the sport…but rather the things he hasn’t. Hans first gained notori-ety in the late 80’s with his trials riding antics, like the infamous ‘car-hop’ maneuver, in which he jumped over his buddy’s car…in rush-hour traffic…on the 405 freeway. After that…well…he never really stopped gaining notoriety. Having won trials world-champion titles in the 90’s, Hans’ career as a cyclist didn’t stop when he stopped competing – it started.

Whether by winning multiple world championships, pioneering the freeride movement, helping define international trail standards, founding a charity which has successfully developed a cycling infrastructure in the most remote, poverty-stricken regions of the World, or having his legendary biking adventures to some of the world’s most exotic locales chronicled by every outdoor, adventure, travel, or cycling publication imaginable, Hans continues to define (and re-define) what it means to earn Your Wings.


erICCarTerClassy. Between his national and world championship titles, his activities as a brand ambassador, and his ability to earn the respect of nearly every cyclist he meets, E.C.’s done a lot to earn both his wings and his place as a wingman. Our personal favorite though is when "Captain Underpants" protested the UCI’s last-minute decision to cancel a World Cup 4X event by banditing the proposed course in nothing but his skivvies. Stay Classy, eC.


TYlerMCCaUlTMC = WTF. Generally speaking, if you can pull off an aerial maneuver on a bike that leaves everyone watching wondering what the hell you just did, then you stand a pretty good shot at making the Wingmen team. If you can take the same maneuver, and make it look effortless, stylized, and smooth, your chances improve further-still. If you can accomplish all of the above, be the first person to land a triple-tail-whip on a 26" bike, and survive a round of free Genepie at Les Deux Alps’s legendary Windsor Pub…well, then you’ve pretty much got your membership into the Wingmen program locked up…even if you are a San Francisco Giants fan. Need proof? Look no further than Tyler, who antics on two wheels both amaze and befuddle, and who’s choice in professional sports franchises can best be described as…well…terrible.


DaVeWaTSoNShaming spandex since 2003. Wingmen don’t issue statements; their riding is a statement enough. Whether by jumping over the Peloton at the 2003 Tour de France, or founding Sombrio, the industry’s first apparel brand dedicated to making cycling apparel that doesn’t leave riders feeling like they’re wearing jellyfish pajamas, or gallivanting with Hans on his adventure trips.


aNDreWCHoDomo arigato, Mr. Choboto. A unique species, the Chobot is a cross-pollination of a mountain-biker, amateur documentary film-maker, gravity-coach, and fun-hog. Classified by the balance of the Wingmen as a friendly, amicable creature, the Chobot is most readily found in its natural habitat of the North-Shore of Vancouver, but has been proven to adapt well to most any environment where there’s quality dirt, copious volumes of free alcoholic beverages, and at any party and/or festivals where elaborate, creative costume designs are the norm.


Co-FaCTorYProforms aren’t much help when you’re trying to chase UCI points without leaving the continent.
