Renown architect Louis H.
Sullivan was absolute in
his belief that there should be
continuity between structures and
their environment.
It was that philosophy that led
to the design of the Merchants
National Bank building in Grinnell,
one of eight such Jewel-Box bank
buildings constructed between 1908
and 1920.
Sullivan is considered the “Father
of the American Skyscraper,” the
genius who single-handedly worked
to forge a uniquely American
architectural style and, in turn,
became the spiritual leader of the
Prairie School design that was made
famous by Frank Lloyd Wright, a
protege of Sullivan.
Sullivan designed the building in
late 1913, with construction taking
place during a 10-month period
in 1914 at a cost of $60,000. The
grand opening was held on Jan. 1,
1915, and one newspaper reporter
wrote, “The new Merchants Bank
building is not a mere building. It
is a creation. It was realized fi rst in
the mind of Louis H. Sullivan. Mr.
Sullivan dreamed the building. The
building is his dream come true.”
Located at the corner of Fourth
and Broad streets, the Merchants
National Bank building draws
thousands of visitors to Grinnell
each year. The building has been
home to the Grinnell Chamber of
Commerce since 1999.

Josiah Bushnell Grinnell, a native of Vermont, was the person to whom Horace Greeley gave his
famous advice, “Go West, young man, go West.” Grinnell took that advice and in 1854 founded
the city that now bears his name. A leader in
state government, Grinnell in 1857 chaired the
legislative committee that planned Iowa’s system of
public education from the elementary through the
university level. A foe of slavery, he gave shelter
in 1859 to the fiery abolitionist John Brown after
Brown’s anti-slavery raids in Kansas and Missouri.
J.B. Grinnell also made his community a stop on
the Underground Railroad, with about 1,000 freed
slaves passing through the town in the years before
the Civil War. After a devastating tornado struck
Grinnell in 1882, and again after fire destroyed
much of the business district in 1889, the founder
led the rebuilding efforts that resulted in a renewed
community.
The city is the home of Grinnell College, a private
coeducational liberal arts institution founded as Iowa
College in Davenport in 1846. The college, which
moved to Grinnell in 1859, was the first institution
west of the Mississippi River to grant a bachelor’s
degree.
Grinnell has many excellent examples of 19th
century residential, commercial, and institutional
architecture, with several structures listed on the
National Register of Historic Places. The city’s most
notable building is the Grinnell Sullivan Bank (See
photos on this page) now owned by Wells Fargo,
originally the Merchants National Bank of Grinnell.
See related story on preceding page.
Note: The above are excerpts from a statement written by the late William A. Deminoff, former Secretary of Grinnell College, for a plaque erected at the Grinnell Rest Area on Interstate 80 by the State Historical Society of Iowa and the Iowa Department of Transportation.

Grinnell is recognized as a safe, progressive and metropolitan
city by many organizations. Accolades include: #1 city in the nation
to live in or relocate to; #3 coolest small town in America; one
of America’s most walkable communities; a walker’s paradise;
the coolest small town in the Midwest; one of America’s prettiest
painted places; and one of the 100 best small towns in America.
Grinnell is located on Interstate 80 in East Central Iowa and
has a population of 9,200 people, an increase of nearly 4% since
the last census. Grinnell is the region’s population and business
magnet, with an increase in population of 18% during business
hours. Grinnell retains all the charm that has made this historic
city famous, yet is within minutes of major metropolitan areas.
With I-35 and Des Moines only 45 minutes from Grinnell along
I-80, all of the major metropolitan areas of the Midwest are easily
accessible. In fact, more than 1.3 million people live within 70
miles of Grinnell.
Grinnell is a dynamic, thriving community of hard-working
residents employed by a diverse range of business: Grinnell Regional
Medical Center, H-W Brand, ASI Modulex Signs, Engineered
Plastic Components, Miraco, Ashing Machine and Tool Company,
Manatt’s, Pulmuone Wildwood Natural Foods, ImageFirst Signs,
Rock Creek Athletics, McGill AirFlow Corporation, R.C. Industry,
Monsanto, Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company, The Donaldson
Company, Jeld-Wen Windows & Doors and VanWyk Freight
Lines.
Rooted in its agricultural heritage, Grinnell is surrounded
by productive farm operations that contribute to the city’s
economic progress. Diverse livestock and grain operations provide
opportunities for emerging alternative crops and added value
initiatives and Grinnell enjoys a strong local food movement.
The City is home to Grinnell College, one of the country’s
premier liberal arts institutions. “U.S. News & World Reports”
annually rates the college as one of the top colleges in the nation.
The diverse student population of about 1,600 historically comes
from nearly every state and many foreign countries.
The commitment to quality education and lifelong learning
spans the entire educational system in Grinnell. Pre-K – 2nd
elementary schools, a 3-4 elementary school, a 5-8 middle school
and a 9-12 high school meet the education needs of the city. Iowa
schools rank highly in quality of education, and Grinnell is regularly
rated highly within the state. High school students have access to
advanced placement and honors classes, and have the opportunity
to extend their learning through partnerships with Grinnell College
and Iowa Valley Community College. The educational program
at Grinnell Middle School is designed around a philosophy that
includes a family-centered concept at 5th grade, an advisor-advisee
program and a comprehensive exploratory program. Elementary
schools feature favorable class sizes with extra educational
support through Title I Reading Programs and a Reading Recovery
Program. Grinnell-Newburg Community Schools also offer
programs for students with special needs, including an Extending
Learning Program for talented and gifted students and special
at-risk programs at both Grinnell Middle School and Grinnell High
School, as well as a comprehensive special education program.
In addition, for those students who prefer an alternative setting
for high school, New Horizons Alternative School is located in
the community center. An accredited and non-denominational
Christian school is also located in Grinnell, serving students K-8.
Excellence in health care is provided through is the 81-bed
Grinnell Regional Medical Center and its 50-plus staff physicians.
GRMC has an excellent balance of primary care physicians,
specialists and state of the art equipment and technology. Area
retirement communities and facilities for the elderly include
Mayfl ower Community, Friendship Manor, St. Francis Manor and
Windsor Manor – these extend the range and quality of health care
and provide extended care and quality supervised living.
Grinnell offers a wide variety of restaurants and many
recreational areas. Ahrens-Paschall Memorial park is more than
100 acres with a 20,000 sq ft family center, playgrounds, trails,
ball diamonds and a multipurpose gym. A nine-hole private golf
course with pool and clubhouse restaurant is located within the
city limits and a public 18-hole course is just a few minutes west
of the city. The new Grinnell Mutual Family Aquatic Center has
two water slides, a lazy river, pool, splash zone and more. Parks
include Central Park, complete with gazebo and the city’s many
neighborhood parks offer residents of all ages a chance to sit back
and enjoy the good life.
Grinnell is a community that embraces her past. J.B Grinnell,
Hallie Flanagan Davis, Harry Hopkins, Billy Robinson and
Robert Noyce are but a few renowned fi gures who helped shape
Grinnell and whose lives were impacted by this unique city.
Their contributions to Grinnell are documented and preserved in
Grinnell’s new Drake Library, the Grinnell Historical Museum and
the Grinnell College Archives.
The tree-lined residential areas of Grinnell abound with prime
examples of historic Midwestern craftsmanship, ranging from Arts
and Crafts and Prairie School through stately Queen Annes and
Victorians.
The city’s spiritual needs are served by 25 churches and an
active ministerial organization. Along with area service clubs
and organizations, these bring people together through volunteer
and mentoring opportunities to strengthen the quality of life for
everyone in the community.

GRINNELL REGIONAL MEDICAL CENTER
Hometown HealthcareG
rinnell Regional
Medical Center enjoys
the exclusivity of
being a nationally rated, top
rural medical center, based on
quality, safety, and effi ciency. A
resident medical staff of more
than 50 active practitioners
brings continued growth to
the services provided. Our
physicians and staff make it
possible for area residents to
stay close to home and take
advantage of expertise that is
otherwise located hours away.
As a nonprofi t organization,
GRMC spends revenues from
patient services on improved
patient care and the organization.
Quality, hometown medical
care is the only incentive for
providing our services. The
medical center and departments
are not beholden to shareholders
or other outside, profi t-driven
stakeholders or owners.
Two areas where this is
most important and apparent
are hospice and home health
services.
Grinnell Regional Hospice
was established in 1981 by a
group of volunteers who saw
the need in their community
to provide their neighbors
and loved ones with quality
end-of-life care. Today hospice
in Grinnell has evolved into an
offi cial department of Grinnell
Regional Medical Center and
continues to offer excellent
hometown care. An important
feature of Grinnell Regional
Hospice is the personal and
compassionate involvement of
specially-trained community
volunteers.
Affi rming the dignity
and worth of life, Grinnell
Regional Hospice provides
services to people who have a
life expectancy of six months
or less. Hospice services are
provided at home, in nursing
homes and/or in the hospital.
The hospice team includes a
medical director, nurses, social
workers, home health aides, a
chaplain, pharmacists, dietitians,
massage therapists, volunteers
and others professionals who
work to ensure quality of life at
the end of life.
Home is where the heart
is. Grinnell Regional Home
Care provides care for people
who need assistance while
recovering at home. Staff
understand the importance of
recovering from an illness,
injury, or debilitating condition
in the comforts of home. It’s
easier than ever with the wide
range of services, technology,
and most important, the caring
professional staff of Grinnell
Regional Home Care. The care
provided is supervised by your
physician. Nurses, home health
aides, medical social services,
and other rehabilitation
therapists are able to come into
your home and help ensure that
your needs are met.
Grinnell Regional Hospice
and home care referrals may
be made by your physician,
yourself, a relative, friend,
hospital staff, or a community
agency.
For more information or
to request Grinnell Regional
Medical Center’s Hospice and
Home Health services call

Grinnell College: A Unique Community The city of Grinnell has been home to
Grinnell College since 1858. The people
of Grinnell have developed a unique
community, with 150 year of experience as
a place dedicated to higher education.
Grinnell College enrolls about 1,600
undergraduate students from every U.S.
state, the District of Columbia, and more
than 50 countries. The College attracts
students who value personal achievement,
collaboration, intellectual interaction, and
community. Thoughtful analysis, strong
communication skills, and independent
thinking are fundamental to a Grinnell
education. Grinnell seeks inquisitive
students interested in making an impact on
the college community and the world.
The College’s primary mission is
to provide students with a broad, deep,
life-enhancing education that emphasizes
professional success, personal growth, and
social responsibility. Grinnell College offers
an exceptional, rigorous, comprehensive,
and opportunity-rich educational experience
fi lled with one-on-one interactions with
faculty, alumni, and staff.
Opportunities for Community Many programs and offi ces reinforce
the College’s deep commitment to the
community of Grinnell. College events offer
Grinnell residents cultural, intellectual,
and entertainment opportunities rare for
a community of this size. The Faulconer
Gallery, Bucksbaum Center for the Arts, and
Gale Observatory draw visitors from around
the region. The Offi ce of Community
Enhancement and the Community Services
Center testify to the College’s role as
economic partner and citizen in Grinnell.
The Center for Prairie Studies refl ects
appreciation for the surroundings, while
the Center for International Studies and
the Rosenfi eld Program in Public Affairs,

If you’re tired of impersonal pharmacy service, long lines and never seeing the same pharmacist behind the counter, you should consider switching to your local Medicap Pharmacy® store.
The Medicap Pharmacy® store focus is pharmacy, quality health care products, and services. Plus, they offer periodic health care screenings. They offer easy access to the pharmacist, prompt, friendly personalized service, and because most stores are locally owned, you’ll see the same familiar face behind the counter. When you’re ready to transfer your prescriptions, don’t worry, just stop in, they’ll make it easy!.
Now, that’s a healthy dose of reality.
My Reality...“I worried about transferring my prescriptions.”

Christmas Share making smiles By J.O. [email protected]
The Poweshiek County Christmas Share program has been making
Christmas brighter for area families for more than 20 years. Pam Montgomery, volunteer and chair of the 2011 Christmas Share, said the outreach provided gifts to 220 families representing 653 people. The gifts are donated by local church-es, organizations, businesses and in-dividuals who sponsor the families. In conjunction with Christmas Share, Goodfellows provides a com-plete Christmas dinner for each fam-ily, as well as enough food to carry them into the new year. “It’s amazing what people do,” Montgomery said of the two out-reaches. “It’s a great way of touching 653 people in a small way.” Families receiving the gifts and food are required to sign up for the outreach in the fall. Families are identifi ed only by a number.
“Sponsors purchase gifts which are suggested on the sign up sheets, wrap them and deliver them (to a central location) so they can be dis-tributed to families,” Montgomery said. All the sorting, packing, last min-ute wrapping and distribution takes place in Grinnell. The gifts and food will be distributed to area families in mid-December. Vo l u n t e e r s come from Grinnell College, Grinnell High School and from all across the Grinnell community. Christmas Share is sponsored by Second Mile and has been providing Christmas gifts to area families since 1991. Goodfellows is a volunteer-based program that was founded in 1913 by Adah Hopkins. Goodfellows is sponsored by the Focht-Tennant Post 53 of the American Legion Aux-
iliary. “Our (Goodfellows) sole purpose is to provide food over the holidays for people who are disadvantaged,” said Montgomery. “We don’t ask or solicit funds from any individual (or company), but we always have money
to buy for every family.” Sign up for the 2012 Christmas Share is Nov. 5-10 at the First Pres-byterian Church, 1025 5th Ave., Grin-nell. For more information, contact Montgomery at 641- 990-0404.

Goodfellows is an organization that was stared by Adah Hopkins (Harry Hopkins sister), in 1913. As she wrote, Adah had a burden for the people that were disad-
vantaged, needy and hurting. "She developed this organization to raise funds to purchase food packages for needy people," noted Pam Montgomery. "These gifts were then delivered to disad-vantaged families just before the holidays." When Adah left Grinnell, the program was turned over to O. Dale Smith until he was unable to continue. Midge Bailey assumed the coordinator’s role until she could not continue and then Jerry Slebiska picked up the responsibilities. When Jerry passed away, Shirley Sears became the organizer. Pam Montgomery took over the responsibility this year. "The Goodfellows have cared enough to carry this program forward for 97 years and it is still going strong," Montgomery said. "I have a great admiration for each and every one of them for having put forth great efforts and contributions to help those in need, which I think truly embraces the spirit of the program when it was started 97 years ago." In the past few years, Goodfellows have opted to give grocery cards to recipients, but this year, the organization will be distributing food. "As we continue to receive donations, we are confi dent that we will provide food packages to every family that signed up this year," Montgomery said.
