Grand Valley State competes inthe Great Lakes Intercollegiate Ath-letic Conference (GLIAC) and NCAADivision II. The GLIAC consists oftwelve colleges and universities lo-cated in Michigan and Ohio. The GLIAC was founded in 1972.During the two years previous to theGLIAC’s founding, several attemptswere made to create a new NCAACollege Division conference. In1971, the Great Lakes Athletic Con-ference was formed, but plans forthe new conference were put onhold and several of the participatingschools subsequently withdrewtheir support. The idea for a new conference didnot die, however, and since 1972-73the GLIAC has been a leader in theadvancement and promotion of in-tercollegiate athletics for men andwomen. Grand Valley was a charter mem-ber of the GLIAC, joining Lake Supe-rior State, Northwood and SaginawValley State to form the conferencein 1972. Since then, the GLIAC hasexpanded throughout the GreatLakes Region adding Walsh and Mal-one in 2012. The GLIAC crowns champions in atotal of 19 sports. In addition towomen’s soccer, the GLIAC decidestitles in baseball, men’s and women’sbasketball, men’s and women’s crosscountry, men’s and women’s golf, men’s soccer, softball, men’s andwomen’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis, men’sand women’s indoor and outdoortrack, wrestling and volleyball. Be-ginning in 2012-13, the GLIAC willalso sponsor women’s lacrosse. The GLIAC awards the President’sCup every year for excellence in allGLIAC sponsored sports. The Lakershave won this cup for 11 consecu-tive years: 1998-1999, 1999-2000,2000-2001, 2001-2002, 2002-2003,2003-04, 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07,2007-08, 2008-09, 2010-11 and2011-12.

The Laker soccer program claimed the top prize for the sec-ond straight season at the end of 2010. The national cham-pionships came just 14 seasons after the program first tookthe field in 1996. In the last 15 years, GVSU has quickly pro-gressed from a brand new program, to a GLIAC contender,to a playoff caliber team and now a national powerhouse. The back-to-back national titles tell stories of amazing sea-sons, but it also marks the culmination of hard work anddedication of every player and coach who helped the pro-gram reach the next level.

From the outside, GVSU looked like it would have troublereplacing All-American players Irie Dennis and Natalja Stan-ski, but the roster was already filled with underclassmenready to take their spots. The Lakers continue to reload

with talent and won their seventh straight GLIAC Championship, but just missed winning itsthird National Title.

COACHING

The women’s soccer program has been under the leadership of Dave DiIanni since 2003. As the headcoach he has led the team to nine consecutive NCAA playoff appearances, which is even more im-pressive considering he lead the program to it’s first-ever appearance in his first year. DiIanni hasbrought the program to new heights since his arrival. The first playoff appearance, the first GLIACchampionship, the first undefeated season, the first Final Four, and the first national championshiphave all come during his tenure.

DiIanni has also tutored 16 All-Americans and a pair of NSCAA Player of the Year honorees in his nineseasons. In 2006 and 2010, he was named the NSCAA National Coach of the Year and he has been theRegional Coach of the Year two times. DiIanni is also the coach of the 92 ODP age group and is a USSF-B licensed coach. Entering the 2012 season, DiIanni has a career record of 177-16-14 (.890) with hiswinning percentage ranking second among active Division II coaches.

Erica Demers has spent the last seven years as the top assistant coach for the soccer team and wasnamed associate head coach in December 2011. In that time, the Lakers have seen their six best goaltotals by scoring 75 or more goals in each season, with a high of 92 in 2010. In 2010 the Lakersoutscored opponents by a total of 92-5, with four players recording 20 or more points. EXPERIENCE

GVSU is committed to offering its student-athletes an opportunity to participate in some of the bestexperiences of their lives, while competing in intercollegiate athletics, as well as attending one of thefastest rising universities in the state.

In 2008, the Lakers prepared for their upcoming season practicing against top-notch competition inEurope through the preseason. In 2009, the team kicked off the season with two games in Tampa, Fla.This would bookend the season as the playoffs would take them through Denver, Colo. and back toTampa where they hoisted the trophy to finish the undefeated season. The 2010 season saw the Lakershost three postseason games before traveling to Louisville, Ky. to claim the program’s second NCAAChampionship trophy. In 2011, GVSU won back-to-back shootouts to advance to its third straight tripto the Final Four

One of the main attributes of a Division II program is to offer “Life in the Balance” to students. GVSUtakes pride in offering academic balance along with athletic success. Student-athletes in the soccerprogram experience the best of every aspect of the college experience and a quality education is noexception. The soccer team has a cumulative GPA of just over 3.1, with 20 members of the team aver-aging over a 3.0.

When you combine the outstanding academic reputation of the school with the program’s winningtradition, it’s easy to see why GVSU is promoted as a “Grand” experience.

The Lakers celebrate advancing to its thirdstraight national championship game.

The soccer play-ers also took part in GVSU’s Family Fun Day,hosting activities for the children of the campus’faculty and staff. In the fall of 2009, GVSU hosted two clinics for soccer teams from the GrandRapids Special Olympics and those teams were able to showcase their talents during halftimeof one of the games.

HOMEFIELD

The GVSU Soccer Field is located on-campus in Allendale. The home field for the Lakers saw one ofthe biggest college soccer matches in West Michigan when the No. 3 Lakers defeated the No. 1 TampaSpartans in the first game of the 2008 season. In 2009, the Lakers added a brand new scoreboard be-hind the south end of the field and completed a locker room under the press box. GVSU now has extralocker rooms, new restrooms and a permanent concession stand at the brand new South Complex.

The Lakers hold a strong advantage over their opponentswhen playing at home. The Lakers had a home unbeatenstreak of 43 games that spanned from 2005-08. In 2009, theLakers began another home streak as they were declaredthe victors after every home contest through the 2010 sea-son. GVSU hasn’t lost a regular season home game sinceSept. 4, 2005. The Lakers boast an astonishing 94-4-3 recordat home under coach Dave DiIanni.

Having such a strong regular season home record helps theLakers keep their games in Allendale once the postseason begins. The GVSU soccer field has been hostto at least one NCAA playoff game in each of the past seven years. When the season is on the line, theLakers are often able to play at home in front of friends and family.
