East Central head footballcoach Tim Behlmer has onething to say about the trendyspread offenses that rely onspeedandfinessetomovethefootballthesedays.

Our signature always has been physi-cal football, said the fifth-year Trojans boss, 34-11 in his two stints at the head of the program, including last years 9-2 conference championship season.

It really benefits us now that so many teams have gone to the spread. Theyre not very comfortable when the come up against a power football team like ours. Its a very difficult situation for them. Thats the way we like it. Until they roll me out to pasture, thats the kind of foot-ball team were going to be.

That information should set well with the legions of Trojan fans out there, whove grown accustomed to Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference titles (20 and counting), sectional championships (15 all told) and consecutive winning seasons (22) when the leaves turn around St. Leon.

We always expect to have good sea-sons at East Central, continued Be-hlmer, a member of the consolidations first graduating class in 1974 and former UC defensive end. Our practices are very physical and we work at it year-round. We didnt get this way by taking the easy way out.

According to the Indiana Football Di-gest, which again ranks the Trojans as the No. 4 team in Class 4A in its 2012 preseason poll right where they left off last season East Central returns five starters each on offense and defense from

the team that put up 354 points, while al-lowing 124, a year ago.

While those figures may be accurate, so many players on ECs roster of 100-plus saw significant varsity action that few can actually be termed rookies.

For instance, offensive line returnees Trevor Meyer (61, 255, Sr.), at guard; Jon Tumlin (61, 270, Sr.), at tackle; and Sam Weber (61, 235, Sr.), the other tackle, will be joined by center Tim Berke-meier (60, 240, Sr.) and newcom-er Dylan Davis (510, 250, Sr.) at guard. Berke-meier has seen plenty of playing time at defensive end, where hell double again, for the past two years.

Incumbent tight end Nick Bill-man (61, 215, Sr.) will be joined by All-State linebacker Payton Stone-field (60, 188, Sr.), who also could line up at wideout in some situations along-side senior playmaker Evan Fette (62, 185), the teams top receiver with 28 catches for 510 yards and eight TD last year.

Back for what shapes up as another banner year is senior tailback Tyler Dou-thit (60, 165), who earned All-State and league co-MVP honors after racking up 1,317 rush yards for a 6.7 average per carry and 15 touchdowns in 2011. Senior fullbacks Eric Wolfzorn (58, 200) and Greg Bonomini (511, 180) both saw ac-tion as point-of-attack blockers.

Its not like East Central doesnt have

offensive balance, either. Senior quar-terback Seth Federle, a wiry 511, 155-pound two-year veteran, completed 71 of 136 passes for 1,129 yards, 15 touch-downs and nine interceptions last season. At press time, he and classmate Tom Schroer (59, 162) still were battling for the starting job.

Were going to play a lot of people, said Behlmer, citing another trait of East

Central football. All our kids are competing hard, and a lot of them are so close. Theyve been work-ing their tails off. They deserve the chance.

ECs array of offensive weap-onry is equalled, if not slightly surpassed, by repeaters on what should be yet another formidable Trojan defense.

All-State inside backer and county co-MVP Stonefield, also ECs excellent long-snapper and

    a four-year starter, amassed a school record 227 defensive

points last fall, breaking Brad Steinmetzs career

record with 100 solo stops. Hes also clos-

ing in on Bill Wades career defensive

    points mark (539 from 1 9 9 1 - 9 4 ) , with 401.5

entreing this season.Multi-talented Fette, the rangy outside

backer with great anticipation and field vision, tallied 142.5 defensive points at outside backer in 2011. Back at the other outside linebacker spot is speedy, ag-gressive third-year man Brian Struewing (59, 165), a hard hitter and standout wrestler.

    East Centrals five-man rotation on

the defensive front all return plenty of varsity experience. Tackles Nic Smith (61, 220, Sr.) and Zach Streng (511, 255, Sr.) will be flanked by ends Chance Schuh (60, 201, Sr.), Berkemeier and Chad Cullen (62, 210), in some com-bination.

Secondary will feature a trio of first-year senior starters, all of whom saw the field on Friday nights at times last year. They are cornerbacks Isaac Gorman (59, 155) and Mitchell Baker (60, 145), with safety Brian Frondorf (510, 165).

Newcomers who could boost the regu-lars include juniors T.J. Hamer (510, 156) and Ryan Ferguson (59, 165), at inside backer, and sophomore Hunt-er Kammer (60, 136) at corner. But the best of them could be junior Cade Knueven (59, 160), whos pushing for

Friday night,Aug.24,marksthebeginningofKentMcCulloughssecondseasonasheadcoachoftheHarrisonWildcats,butwiththenewSouthwestOhioConferencestartingthisyear McCullough believes its almost like the firstyearalloveragain.

Last year I watched a lot of film to study the tenden-cies of the coaches we were going up against, said Mc-Cullough. Im going to have to study more film again this year with all the new teams and coaches.

Five of the 10 teams from last years schedule are back this year, but three of those schoolsOak Hills, Edgewood, and Talawandahave new coaches. One of those new coaches is Talawandas J.D. Vonderheide, who served as offensive coordinator for Harrison last season. Vonderheide and McCullough were college teammates at Miami University.

McCullough is looking forward to the new league, particularly the rebirth of the Ross rivalry, but admits that the first three games of the seasonnon-conference opponents East Central, Oak Hills and Kingsare ex-tremely important for Harbin ratings.

I hope to learn from the mistakes of last year, said McCullough. We dont want to start off 0-3 again.

Those three games are particularly important because with seven conference games this year instead of five, it means that half the league opponents will lose a game in the final seven weeks of the season. Picking up Har-bin points will be vital against schools that fellow SOC members dont play.

To do that, the Harrison defensethe unit that ap-pears to be the strength of the team for nowneeds to come out strong. The defensive line, in particular, is a strong unit thanks to the return of defensive ends Tru-man Gutapfel and Jon Schneider.

Truman is a man among boys right now, said Mc-Cullough. In our scrimmage with Withrow, Trotwood and Fairfield he whipped everyone. Hes in great shape and could go a full [48 minutes], but were not going to take that chance.

Gutapfel and Schneider are set to rotate series as right tackle on offense, but Schneider sprained a knee liga-ment in the first scrimmage and McCullough planned to hold him out of the final scrimmage against Loveland last Friday for precaution.

Ben Kling and John Sittason will rotate at nose tackle similar to what Schneider and Gutapfel will do on of-fense. Those two also will start fulltime on the offensive line.

They are both big guys who can take up some space, said McCullough.

There remains a battle for the two inside linebacker positions among four players: Byron Vaught, Izzy Campbell, Cody Kinsel, and David Sittason.

The battle for the two outside linebacker spots in-cludes David Saunders, Lucas Gerhardt, and Ryan Sizemore.

The secondary has more experience. Tim Barton returns as strong safety, a position he held most of last season after an injury to Alex Gill. He will play along-side free safety Zach Wormald.

Wormald has really stepped up, said McCullough. Hes got size and can cover a lot of ground.

Luke Bowman and A.J. Glinesoffensive starterscould rotate into the secondary positions as well.

Cornerbacks will be Josh Gober and Justin Conners. Gober was a starter last year and Conners might have

been had he not suffered an early-season injury. Angelo Scarloto and Tyler Manning are also in the cornerback mix.

The most important decision of the preseason has yet to be made as of press time. The quarterback battle rages on between senior Mitchell Thomas and sophomore Jake Weber.

We wont make the decision until before the East Central game, said McCullough. W e have the maturity of a senior and the athleticism of a sophomore.

Mitchell is a quick decision maker, said McCullough.

Thomas saw some backup duty last season and served as the junior varsity starter, which means he has more ex-perience than Weber.

Weber provides an extra element, said Mc-Cullough. When a play breaks down hes able to make something hap-pen.

McCullough promises there wont be any shuf-fling of quarterbacks. Who-ever wins the job will keep it.

We need stability there, said McCullough. We also want each kid to get a fair opportunity.

Two players returning from injuries last season will give the Cats options at running back: Ryan Long and Conners. Long tore an ACL last season, but the knee has healed and Mc-Cullough said, Ryans one of the hardest-working kids Ive ever coached. The knee is not an issue. Hes back to the Ryan of last year.

Long gives the team a runner up the middle and av-eraged four yards on 80 carries. Conners is the speed back.

Justin gives us some more speed, said McCullough. He can get by people in space.

Sophomore Sterling Noes has a back injury, but he could push for some carries.

Hes one of the fastest players on the team, said McCullough. Were expecting big things from him.

There will not be a traditional fullback this season. Luke Bowman will operate out of the H-back positiona cross between a fullback and a tight end.

Well move Luke around a lot in different forma-tions, said McCullough.

Glines is the teams leading returning receiver. He caught 34 passes for 413 yards and four touchdowns last season opposite all-state wide receiver Kyle Nowlin.

A.J.s betting better, said McCullough. We need to get the ball to him a lot.

Three players are looking to play opposite Glines this season: Mitch Hoffman, Chase Peasley, and Kinsel.

All three of them have stepped up so far, said Mc-

Cullough. The offensive line could be another strength of this

years team. Kling has moved over from guard to center this year.

Hell be the leader, said McCullough.Left tackle will be manned by either John Sittason or Casey Boyle. Brennan Hiatt,

Chris Schneider, and Ethan Roell are in a three-way battle for the two guard posi-tions. Gutapfel and Jon Schneider are

set to rotate at the right tackle posi-tion.

Nowlins graduation left mul-tiple holes on special teams.

Soccer players Conner McCurley and Alex Ramey are battling for the placekicking job. Glines will be the punter. The holder will be either Thom-as or Weber.

    Hoffman or Wormald will

    be the long s n a p p e r

    for punts. Kling will

    snap for extra points

and field goals. The Cats open the season on

Friday night against East Central. The Trojans got a week head start

on the Cats; they opened Fri-day, Aug. 16, at home against

    Richmond.

The 2011 season, Lawrence-burgfootballsfirstunderheadcoachRyanKniggaandanewspread offense, started withplentyofpromise.

Tigers opened 2-0, with an emotional win over South Dearborn and another at Taylor (Ohio). But they fizzled to a 5-6 finish, haunted, again, by crippling injuries to key personnel.

Obviously, last year was a learning experience, said Knigga, the 1996 LHS graduate and former In-diana State captain. We were trying to implement a new system and change the culture. We were very disappoint-ed in some aspects last year, and w e v e b e e n working hard to c h a n g e t h a t . W e h a d great workouts through the winter, spring and summer. Our kids are starting to turn the cor-ner. They know whats expected now.

Graduating only nine seniors, Lawrenceburg will miss two particularly in QB Evan Van Strien, whose 1,277 air yards and 16 touchdowns marked the second best passing season in Tiger history, and all-conference and all-re-gion TE/DE Jake Ren-nekamp (23 catches, 434 yards, six TD, 47 tackles, 8.5 sacks), named Indiana De-fensive Lineman of the Year by

the Anthony Munoz Foundation, as well as team MVP.

With a surprising 20 seniors returning, LHS thinks it has the speed, skill and depth to replace those two key perform-ers. What the Tigers need, when they kick off the 2012 campaign Friday night at South Dearborn, is more defensive stopping ability.

Last years numbers were, frankly, ugly on the defensive side. Although Lawrenceburg jacked up its point pro-

duction to 27.1 per game, averaging 298 yards gained per contest, Tiger

defenders surrendered a whop-ping 35.8 points and 394 yards every time out.

Although the teams lone Eastern Indiana Athletic Con-ference win in 2011 was that

memorable 69-68 over-time TD bonanza in

Neary Stadiums pit, it served as a clear cry for any kind of de-fensive help.

    Second-year LHS defen-

    sive coordinator Derrick Barnes,

the former Oregon Ducks and NFL

linebacker, and staff went to work immediately after last season to shore up that

    glaring weakness.Weve simplified our

defensive schemes in order to just let people play, Knigga said. Weve also commit-ted several players to play defense only. We may not be able to completely go two-platoon. But if we can stick with 5-6 guys playing just one way, wed like to

    do that.Primary defenders

wholl be relied upon as run-stuffers up

    front include

D-linemen Dillon Buckingham (64, 255, Sr.), Josh Logsdon (57, 240, Sr.) and Matt Kirk (62, 225, So.), along with ends Jesse Hennies (64, 185, Jr.), Bobby Weber (61, 250, Sr.), Gary Friend (63, 180, Jr.) and move-in Justin Carlisle (61, 180, Sr.).

Inside linebackers Robert Feichtner (61, 185), K.C. Hedger (59, 175) and Sam Zielinski (511, 170), all seniors, will be on the spot this fall, along with outside backers Conner Bowell (57, 155, Sr.) and Ricky Anderson (58, 154, So.), a move-in from South Dearborn.

Defensive secondary will be young, with first-year senior Grant Ricketts (58, 125), juniors Riley Lansing (59, 150) and Nico Jessee (57, 146) and sophomores Konnor Jackson (57, 135), Jordan Kauffman (58, 125) or Mitch Martin (53, 120).

Lawrenceburgs offensive weapons are well-known, starting with explosive, re-lentless senior runningback Chad Ban-schbach (1,474 all-purpose yards, 15

time both at linebacker and run-ningback.

Solid special teams play has been an East Central hallmark. Nothing is expected to change there. Although the Trojans listed just one placekicker, junior Brett Mahoney, on their preseason ros-ter, Behlmer acknowledged that three new candidates came out just last week. EC hit the jackpot last year in a similar-type situa-tion with move-in Ethan McCoy (42-44 extra points, 6-7 field goals, 60 points).

Stonefield or Douthit should handle the punting.

ECs deep coaching staff, an-other key to successful conti-nuity, has lost Tom Harris and Buster Combs, but retains veter-ans Scott Schwarz, Jody Bentley. Justin Roden, Rob Combs, Ken Bates, Scott Hall, Nick Apos-tol, Tyler Hall, Dave Fox, Ken

Dorsey and Dan Foster. As it frequently does, East

Centrals first three non-confer-ence games concerns Behlmer again this year.

Richmond (Fridays opening opponent, 4-6 last year) has a new coach (Matt Holeva) who was successful and Centerville, he said. Harrison has two Divi-sion I kids and they always play us tough. Then were at (Cincin-nati) Sycamore for the first time. Theyre a good, solid program that made the playoffs against Moeller last year.

Behlmer concluded: Were used to winning at least 9-10 games every year and that sets the bar high. But we wouldnt have it any other way. We have people who are playmakers. But weve got to be smart throw-ing the football. Our seniors are pretty stong up front on both sides of the ball. But weve got to execute and get after people. If we dont beat ourselves, we should be OK.

TD), whose boatload of postseason honors included Indiana Offensive Player of the Year by TriStateFootball.com, as well as confer-ence and county MVP.

Electric as a runner can be on the field, its all more amazing considering the 59, 170-pound athlete accomplished that in eight games, due to a second-straight season clouded by injuries. Actually, it was more like six games, with separate injuries taking Banschbach out early vs. Taylor and East Central.

People will notice that Chad is much bigger and stronger this year, Knigga said. He seems like hes faster, too. Hes on a mission this year and hell also be a big se-nior leader for us.

In an effort to keep their chief scoring threats healthy, Tigers are projecting their three key skill players Banschbach and senior wide receivers Robbie Jackson (60, 160) and Morgan Baker (60, 150) to play offense only to start the season. Baker caught 27 balls for 394 yards and six TD last fall.

Senior Jake Rohrer (61, 160) could work into the mix, too, with Lawrenceburg essentially dropping the tight end position in favor of more wideouts.

Triggerman for the run-first LHS spread attack will be sophomore quarterback Sam Fette (511, 155), a capable athlete who stepped up on short notice to start and win in place of an injured Van Strien in week two last year.

Sam proved he can throw the ball in the second half of that Taylor game, Knigga noted. But weve told him we just need him to manage the game for us at this point.

He doesnt have to win it every time out, as long as we dont lose it with turnovers.

Lawrenceburgs offensive line should be as stout as it has in years behind returning veterans Weber and Logsdon at tackles, Hennies at center and guards Alex Orndoff (66, 275, Jr.) and Andrew Kort (61, 240, Sr.).

Tiger special teams should be more of a weapon than ever, with senior kicker Jake Newman concentrating on football only this fall, while Bowell retains punting duties. Kick returns by the speedy LHS skill guys are an obvious threat.

Off-season coaching staff shuffling moved Mike Manford to offensive coordinator, in place of new athletics director Joe Vogel-gesang, with former EC and Butler QB T.J. Brown taking over runningbacks and Justin Moore the wide receivers. Former SD aide Mike Lanning will help with defensive line.

We have some great skill players and were expecting them to have exceptional years, Knigga said. Across, the board, we have all the pieces to the puzzle. Our num-bers are good (nearly 80 from grades 9-12). Its up to us to put the puzzle together and win.

One constant concern in Lawrenceburg football remains. We have to stay healthy and try to develop some depth at the same time, Knigga said. We went into the Milan game last year without six starters and we played South Dearborn for the second time without seven. Were saying that the next man up had better be ready.

This season also marks the last time LHS will play East Central for the foreseeable fu-ture, with new EIAC members Connersville and Rushville filling open schedule spots in 2013.

figure into the rotation at a down tackle, along with senior Evan Hurr (60, 265), perhaps the strongest Knight with a 350-pound bench press and 500 in squats, injured most of last year.

Outside linebacker depth could include sopho-more Chad Terrill (510, 157), a move-in from Cincinnati Elder, who has been a real surprise in the preseason.

Steuer is projected to star at Loudens old safety spot, with big shoes to fill, indeed. Rutzel, although inexperienced, is another pos-sibility for the centerfield po-sition.

After the luxury of having one dependable kicker/punter for the last three years in Kyle Kelly, South Dearborn will turn to either sophomore Tanner Anderson (55, 141) or junior Chandler Hoskins (53, 121), both soccer players, at one or both special teams positions. Conety is a reliable long-snapper, with Miller expected to handle kick and punt returns.

We have a lot of guys of very similar ability on defense, Lows noted. Well try and keep the freshest guys in there at first.

South Dearborn was set to return most of its coaching staff in 2012, before assistant Brad Stoneking was promoted to interim administra-tive assistant to principal Jason Cheek within the last three weeks.

Longtime staffer Andy (Stump) Seaver takes over as defensive coordinator, with 16th year staffer Chris Nobbe the special teams boss. Lows will continue to serve as his own offensive co-ordinator. Also back are Ryan Walston (varsity line, jayvee offense), Donnie Klayer (varsity assistant, freshman head coach), Corey Lehn (linebackers, freshmen) and volunteer assistant

    Tony Hummel.With what happened last

year, I really felt that the kids wanted our success to con-tinue, said Lows.Thats an-other reason I wanted to stick with it. The kids understand

what it takes to be successful, to get the schemes down early and continue to get better every week.

The attitude has been tremendous so far. The commitment of the kids and leadership shown by our seniors have been great. I havent really had to say much in a lot of practices because they already know what to do. Were a lot farther at this point in the season than weve been before.

At 7-3 with a second-placeconference finish a year ago,SouthDearborn football con-tinued to climb the ladder inits fourthyearunderheadcoachEricLows.

Expected to step down from his grid-iron post in the off-season, due to time demands of his new job as elementary school principal, Lows actually did so. Only to return in March when all in-volved saw it to be in the best interests of the school and the program.

The question remains: Can Knights football recapture the momentum it built in four previous years under Coach Lows (20-21 overall) following that brief spell in limbo?

Im real excited to be back working with the kids, said Lows, who wasnt re-ally gone at all. We had to get things up and running again pretty quickly in April, but we got it knocked out fairly fast. Its gone real well, to be honest. Its not like I was coming into a situation where I wasnt familiar.

The 1994 SDHS graduate and former Ball State captain added: We want to get this program to the point where we dont have to rebuild so much every so many years. We graduated a group that had played a lot of football last year. But we have good numbers back, with 55 on our roster which is actually more than last year. Weve got a great big freshman class of 18-20 kids coming in. We look for things to continue to improve.

On paper, South Dearborn returns six starters each on the offensive and de-fensive sides of the football. But key performers from last year are missing on both counts, which leaves both situations under the shadow of doubt.

Missed the most will be SDs defen-sive anchor at inside linebacker, confer-ence MVP, team leader and the third Indiana All-State selection in Knights history, Garrett Saunders (112 tackles, 14 for loss, five sacks, five forced fumbles)

now at BSU.Saunders offensive counterpart, run-

ningback Jesse Adams, will be equally hard to replace after racking up 1,389 rush yards, 12 touchdowns. And dont forget safety and wideout Cameron Louden, who left as SDs career inter-ceptions leader (14).

Knights have busied themselves trying to cobble together some kind of ground attack, based around top returnees Josh Faller (six passing TD, two rushing) and robust fullback A.J. Hummel (313 rush yards, three TD), both seniors. Look for Hummel to shift to tailback on occasion, in addition to his inside linebacker duties.

It will help that three proven offensive line starters are back up front in center Dustin Conety (62, 209 pounds), a third-year regular; plus guards Trey Grubbs (511, 212) and Daniel Waldon (510, 208). All are senior second-year veterans.

Classmate Adam Bailey (510, 181), indispensible two-way starter at wide re-ceiver and defensive back, has big shoes to fill in Loudens old spots. But the three-sport main-stay has the athleti-cism and experience. Another SD three-sport mainstay, se-nior Austin Miller (60, 181) returns at wideout after getting a taste of varsity ac-tion last year.

To boost the run-ning game, South Dearborn is consid-ering more playing time for senior QB Clayton Hensley (510, 150), a bit better passer

than Faller a strong leader and competi-tor who may be shifted to tailback in some sets.

The ground game is almost certain to get a boost from tough-guy junior Brad Bruner (60, 197), wholl double at in-side backer, where he charted 83 tackles (nine for loss) as a full-timer last year. Newcomer Zach Steuer (59, 168), a sophomore in the same mold and the 2011 jayvee offensive MVP, will get

some looks, along with ju-nior Josh Proctor (59,

    182).For pure explosive-

ness, Knights could turn to shifty sopho-more runner Paxton

    McGhee (510, 145), a move-in from Cole-rain who has i m p r e s s e d the coaching staff. Hes moved up on

the list every week, said Coach

    Lows.Filling the gaps at

offensive tackle and tight end will be of equal importance. All-county defensive end Ben May (64, 227),

a senior, should be a key cog at one tackle, with classmate Darrell

Walker (59, 198) and sophomore Dalton

Cisco (60, 212), vying for the other

    spot.A slew of

    n e w c o m e r s may see ac-tion at tight end, where

Saunders was a devastating blocker with good hands. Junior Aus-tin Jefferson (63, 204) has the size and athletic

background, but seniors Jared Whita-ker (60, 178) and Trent Schoster (60, 174) should see time in two-TE sets.

Knights would like to find playing time for two more skill players in 63, 175-pound senior first-year man Seth Rutzel, at wideout, and former backup QB Trent Moorhead (60, 167), a junior who has added size and speed to go with a considerable football IQ.

Defensively, South Dearborn will rely heavily on a cadre of two-way players until some depth develops.

May, at end, along with the rotation of Conety, Grubbs and Waldon will fill three-fourths of the front line positions, with Bruner and Hummel slotted at in-side linebackers and Miller at an outside backer spot. Bailey and Faller are the most experienced returnees in the sec-ondary, both pegged to return at corner-back.

New guys who will help on defense include the trio of Cisco, Whitaker and Jefferson at the other end spot.

Junior Colt Powell (59, 251) could
