Notre Dame’s ASCE Student Chapter has gotten the year off to a great start with events, meetings, and organizing member participation for the Great Lakes Conference next semester. This year we have 73 dues paying members, which is over four times the number we had last year. The club concession stand was before the Stanford game on October 13, 2012. Despite the rainy weather the concession stand was a huge success for ASCE, as was the game for Notre Dame! We managed to raise over $2,500 for the club that Saturday, coming in as the largest grossing concession stand of the weekend. We’ve also organized a tour of the new MBA building and meetings for concrete canoe and steel bridge have been underway since the semester started.

Read on for more details about what we have been up to.

Stayer Job Site Tour

1

At the start of the semester ASCE was able to organize a tour for all club members of the new MBA building being constructed at the end of DeBartolo Quad. This building, the Stayer Center for Executive Education, will be the new location of the Mendoza College of Business Executive Education department. The building will stand three stories tall and take up 54,000 square feet. The tour took place on Tuesday September 4th prior to the first general meeting.

One of the project managers gave the club an initial introduction to the jobs site outside the building before the club was led into the lobby where we were able to view the large rec room on the first floor, which would be used as a multipurpose room for various functions.

After viewing some of the first floor the tour continued down to the basement, where we were able to see the mechanical room and other construction processes, such as incorrect pipe placement. It was pointed out how important attention to detail on a construction site is.

We continued the tour up to the second and third floors, where we saw classrooms and breakout rooms that would be used by the Executive MBA students and program administrators. On the third floor we also were able to view where the executive offices would be located. A main feature of these offices is the gorgeous views of Main Building and the Stadium as the building was designed for the windows to frame these classic Notre Dame landmarks.

The tour ended with a final walk through the lobby of the building and some more information on the architectural woodwork and other project pieces that would be installed as the construction progressed.

The tour was a great way for the civil engineering undergraduate student body to experience a jobsite and hear about logistical issues concerning construction. Thanks go to Skanska Project managers Ryan Odell, Clay Stull, and Mark Kirschman, as well as Notre Dame’s Director of Construction, Douglas Schlagel, and Victor Saavedra from the Notre Dame Architecture office for helping to organize this tour for the club. The project’s anticipated completion is in February of 2013.

Last year ASCE’s student chapter finished 7th overall in the Great Lakes conference, the steel bridge coming in 4th and the concrete canoe coming in 8th. This year the club plans to pick up momentum and go even further in the spring of 2013. Members have already started getting ready for the competitions that we will be competing in at the conference. Both the steel bridge and concrete canoe teams are getting started on design, aiming to excel against the competition at the conference.

The steel bridge group started meeting at the very beginning of the year and they’re very excited about the design this year. “We’re working hard to build off of the momentum from last year’s 4th place,” steel bridge officer, senior Maggie Kakenmaster, had said about how design is going. They finalized the bridge shape and design at the end of the fall semester and will work on the fabrication of the bridge in the spring.

The concrete canoe team is also geared up to meet its goals by the end of the semester. They are getting closer to finalizing their concrete mix and should have the ultimate mix shortly. According to concrete canoe mix designer, senior Nick Sikorski, the goal is to have the mix complete so that the spring semester can place more focus on the design of the hull and rowing practices.

The conference competitions include the concrete canoe, steel bridge, an environmental competition, the technical paper, a geotechnical competition, a materials competition and a quiz bowl competition. The club is very excited and has high expectations this year for our overall performance in the conference.

EPA Campus RainWorks Challenge

The team of Will Connors, Eily Andruszkiewicz, Amanda Schockling, Matt Matasci, Claire Sieradzki and Emily Palmer recently completed their submission for the EPA Campus RainWorks Challenge on behalf of the Notre Dame Chapter of ASCE! The team was led by Dr. Nerenberg and was assisted by Chip Farrell.

The project asked college teams to “create an innovative green infrastructure design for a site on their campus showing how managing stormwater at its source can benefit the campus community and the environment.” The Notre Dame team’s plan was to design retrofits for some, if not all, of the parking areas on campus by introducing bioretention basins to efficiency remove pollutants and containments from stormwater management. The design also called for community rain gardens on the perimeters of campus residence halls.

Thanks to all the team members on a great submission! The team will find out the results of the competition in April!
