Welcome to the fi rst

English Valleys Community Guide

Welcome to the fi rst ever English Valleys Community Guide.

The English Valleys covers two counties and includes fi ve towns. These towns are: North English and Millersburg in Iowa County and Web-ster, South English and Kinross in Keokuk County. The communities of the English Valleys vary in popula-tion from 73 to 1,041 in each town.

The area gets its name from the English Valleys River, which fl ows past these towns. This area also de-fi nes the boundaries of the English Valleys School District, which in-cludes part of Deep River, as well.

Did you know there are more than 100 businesses in the English Val-

leys? That was just one of the many things I learned while putting this community guide together. Inside, you will fi nd a business directory, descriptions of each town, clubs and organizations to join in the English Valleys, details on English Valleys Schools, and places for recreation.

All photos used in this guide, including background shots, are scenes from the English Valleys.

This guide is intended to be an ac-curate representation of the English Valleys as of its publication in the fall of 2012. All information provided has been independently verifi ed and is correct, to the best of our knowl-edge. However, should you fi nd a mis-take, please let us know so we can

correct it for our next guide. As this is our fi rst community

guide for this area, it is also possible we may have missed something. We welcome your corrections, additions and suggestions for our next guide by calling (319) 668-1240 or emailing [email protected].

This guide is written and pro-duced by Marengo Publishing Cor-poration/Williamsburg Journal Tri-bune.

We hope you enjoy our fi rst Eng-lish Valleys Community Guide and take time to explore this wonderful area!

Millersburg

Platted in 1852, Millersburg is the second oldest town in Iowa County. Its

namesake comes from Reu-ben Miller, the man who laid out the town.

Millersburg is located in Iowa County, eight miles northwest of North English, and has a population of 159 people. This town has a variety of small businesses, as well as a library, city park and community center.

Community events are held throughout the year here, courtesy of the Mill-ersburg Betterment Com-mittee.

One of this community’s most unique feature is the log chain that encircles the town park. Six years after the town was founded, it was decided the town needed a chain around the park for residents and visitors to hitch their horses. A log chain was purchased from Marengo and it still en-circles the town park to this day. Millersburg is believed to be the only town in Iowa with a log chain around its town square.

Millersburg is also the only town in Iowa County to feature “Our Iowa” maga-zine’s Burma-Shave like signs. You’ll see these signs if you head south into town on H Avenue. They’re on the west side of the road and
