s the presidents of the two institutions of higher education

that have established one of the most effective working relationships in the nation, we want to speak with one voice to affirm the continuation of the partnership between Florida

Atlantic University (FAU) and Broward College (BC).

While FAU will vacate its two buildings in downtown Fort Lauderdale over the course of the coming year, none of the academic programs based at that location will be discontinued. Instead, they will be moved to other FAU locations, and the 569 degree-seeking students enrolled in them will be assisted by advisors to stay on track toward graduation.

BC’s downtown Fort Lauderdale center is currently serving more than 3,000 students and training thousands more through the college’s continuing education and workforce training center. Additionally, both FAU and BC are

focused on the rapid development of online programs that offer special benefits to students in mid-career by facilitating accessibility to degree programs.

In Davie, FAU and BC stand at the heart of the South Florida Educational Center, where they occupy adjoining campuses and offer students the opportunity to move seamlessly from lower-division to upper-division work in more than 40 degree programs in fields that include business, education, nursing, social work and criminal justice. Together, the two campuses are now serving about 27,000 students.

The bottom line is that the FAU-BC partnership is as strong as ever. The mission of our long-standing partnership goal remains the same: to offer a wide variety of higher educa-tional opportunities to Broward students, who will take their skills into the workplace for the betterment of our entire community.

Please consider Florida Atlantic University in your planned giving.

With more than 36 years in the field of workforce development, it may be hard to believe that Workforce One Employment Solutions’ President/CEO Mason Jackson was once an aspiring experimental psychologist.

It was 1970 and Jackson had just graduated from FAU cum laude with a bachelor's degree in

psychology, when he learned he had been drafted to serve in the U.S. Army as part of the Vietnam War effort. In order to earn a master’s degree at FAU, as he had planned, he requested that his service be deferred, though that would mean a longer tour of duty.

At the time, instead of semester-long terms, FAU was on a quarter system. Jackson was able to finish in five quarters, graduating in 1971 with a master’s degree in experimental psychology, the sole graduate student from the College of Science at his ceremony.

From there, he went on to serve in Washington, D.C., as a member of the Army’s Presidential Honor Guard before requesting reassignment to the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, where he worked in experimental psychology for two and a half years and published three research articles.

“My education at FAU was very extensive and thorough. The foundation I received allowed me to be a contributing author on research. I was also given responsibilities more advanced than my degree would have indicated, given my level of knowledge. I owe it all to the small classes and extensive contact with the professors, which doesn’t happen at larger schools. I was not a number or just another student at FAU. The faculty cared about my learning and my career. While no longer in that field, the scientific and statistical methods I learned served me well in my subsequent career and life in general.”

Jackson decided to change careers from psychology to workforce development while pursuing a doctorate at the University of Maryland, just after leaving the Army.

“I felt that I was more problem-oriented and solution-oriented. At Workforce One, we strive to get people jobs. Helping families, the economy and the community by assisting employers in finding the talent they need to expand and grow their businesses seemed like a great mission and a meaningful way to spend your life.”

Jackson has led Workforce One Employment Solutions for 25 years. He is certified by the National Association of Workforce Development Professionals as a Certified Workforce Development Professional. He is also the past chair of the Greater Fort Lauder-dale Alliance’s Governor Council and Past President of the Florida Workforce Development Association and was recently named the 2012 Florida Economic Development Council Toni Jennings Workforce Development Professional of the Year.

Outside of the office, Jackson enjoys spending time with his family, boating and scuba diving. He is also a fourth degree black belt and instructor in Tae Kwon Do, and competed internationally for nearly 10 years.

The Broward Seaside Burrow, a chapter of the FAU National Alumni Association, recently presented the Seventh Annual Shindig at the Davie campus. This upscale western-themed fundraiser celebrated a commitment to higher education while recognizing the “Wave Makers” who have shown exceptional dedication to the University and its Broward campuses.

“Wave Maker” honorees for 2012 were AutoNation, as the corporate partner; the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance, as the community partner; and Sheriff Al Lamberti ‘81, as the Outstanding Alumnus. Additionally, the Ginny Miller “Pearl of Broward” award was presented to Marsha Levy ’77, ’83 for her leadership, advocacy and support of the University. The prestigious award was designed and donated by seven-time sponsor, P.J. Rossi Jewelers, and is named for Broward community leader and FAU supporter Virginia “Ginny” Miller, the first recipient of the award.

Honorary Chair Howard Schnellenberger and event co-chairs Kathy Molinet ’95, ’04 and Sharon Ragoonan ’01 were delighted to spearhead the event, which raised money to support student scholarships, as well as alumni initiatives at FAU. To date, the event has funded more than 200 scholarships for FAU Broward students.

Known for its casual atmosphere and sumptuous menu, the Shindig has been a sellout since its inception. This success is due in large part to the sponsors and more than 225 top business and community leaders, alumni and friends of the University who attend each year.

Sponsors included Alan & Marsha Levy, AutoNation, Broward College, Broward Health, Dirt Pros, Generation Debt Free, the Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance, the James B. Pirtle Construction Company, the Molinet Family and Paladin Global Partners.
