Greetings,

Welcome to Cincinnati. We are happy to have you here to visit the Queen City.

Citiview Cincinnati serves as an excellent introduction to the many exciting activities and attractions that our great city has to offer.

Cincinnati is a city where you will find unparalleled arts, celebrated cultural institutions, and first-class entertainment options. We are proud to be the home of the two-time Tony Award winning Playhouse in the Park, one of the top five zoos in the coun-try, world class museums, a nationally recognized park system, and two professional sports teams.

You are visiting Cincinnati during one of the more dynamic periods in the city’s history. We are experiencing an urban renais-sance that rivals anything happening elsewhere in the country.

Last year, we redefined our skyline with the addition of the Great American Tower, our new tallest building. On the riverfront, we have opened the first phase of a new 18 acre, development between our two stadiums that combines retail, restaurants, and housing. In addition, we are redefining our riverfront with a new 45-acre park. North of Downtown, we are redeveloping, Over-the-Rhine, one of the largest historic districts in the nation, into a thriving and eclectic urban neighborhood, full of unique shopping and dining experiences.

You can also enjoy visiting the places which have made Cincinnati a destination for years. Take in a concert on Fountain Square, shop at Findlay Market, or spend the afternoon with the family at the Ballpark. And, of course, don’t forget to try our world famous Cincinnati-style chili.

This book is a showcase of all that Cincinnati has to offer. The attractions and hot spots that you learn about in these pages are what make Cincinnati a great place to visit.

Enjoy your stay and I hope you come back to visit soon.

In the mid-20th century, Newport became the premier gaming destination in the US and attracted some of the most famous crime figures and entertainers of the time including: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, “Lucky” Luciano and Al Capone.

Today, Newport is a popular family friendly destination and home to the impressive Newport Aquarium and Newport On The Levee. Helicopter, riverboat and walking tours all originate from Newport, as well.

Bier: A Cincinnati Tradition Continues

F or nearly 100 years,

leading up to Prohibi-

tion, beer was a lead-

ing export and the breweries

themselves were a major employer

of Cincinnati. Although Cincinnati

had previously been infamous for

being the center of pork produc-

tion in the US, beer eventually

took the lead in driving Cincinnati’s

economy. By 1890, Cincinnati was

the 3rd largest beer producer in

the country.

Several German breweries lo-

cated in Over The Rhine produced

this beer. Over The Rhine is a 360-

acre neighborhood located just

north of downtown Cincinnati. This

neighborhood was the landing

spot for most immigrants making

their way to Cincinnati, including

the Germans, who brought with

them a serious work ethic, a strong

cultural identity and a thirst for

bier. (traditional German spelling)

At one time Over The Rhine

was home to more than 15 brew-

eries. A few of these elaborate

structures still stand today. In fact,

some lagering tunnels and under-

ground storage facilities that ran

underground and connected many

buildings and facilities are still be-

ing rediscovered today.

The many saloons that oper-

ated during this period were

the nerve center of social life for

many of the residents of Over The

Rhine. They were also the target

of several temperance movements

and caused a considerable amount

of political unrest in the area.

Gerke Brewery Company, circa 1890

Louis Hudepohl, founder of Hudepohl Brewery.

The University of Cincinnati Architecture students at Meidel’s Beer Garden, 1910

With the onset of Prohibition

in 1919, the many breweries in

the region were shut down. A few

were able to reopen in 1933 but

changes in the marketplace made

it difficult for them to operate for

long. Many bigger operations such

as Anheuser-Busch and Miller had

changed the game.

A few Cincinnati beer names

you may recognize include: Hude-

pohl, Christian Moerlein, Burger,

Schoenlings and Little Kings. The

Christian Moerlein Brewing Com-

pany has now brought these Cincin-

nati beers and their rich brewing

tradition back to life. These beers

are even being brewed at updated

and restored facilities in their old

neighborhood, Over The Rhine.

H yde Park has long been a magnate community in Cincinnati for people from

many walks of life wanting to live, go to school, shop, eat and play amongst abundant green spaces, parks, shops, restaurants and turn-of-the-last century homes set amongst lush 100+ year old flora and fauna. At less than 5 miles from downtown Cincinnati, Hyde Park offers those who choose to live and visit here terrific proximity to the center-city as well as easy access to other destinations including the Greater Cincinnati airport, North-ern Kentucky and popular outlying suburbs. Think of Hyde Park as a picturesque one-of-a-kind “cityburb” and you’ve got the picture.

Idyllic Hyde Park Square is the heart of this community. The center of “The Square” (Erie Avenue between Edwards and Michigan) is defined by an island park in the middle of Erie Boulevard featuring lawns and land-scaped areas as well as historic Kilgore Fountain. Residents and visitors alike find this spot great for sitting on a bench to enjoy a Graeter’s ice cream cone, relaxing after a great breakfast at The Echo, communing with neighbors (and their happy hounds) or just taking in the sights. Surrounding the Square are over 100 specialty shops and boutiques, restaurants, art galleries, coffee shops, banks, salons, real estate agencies and all fashion of independent business and merchant dedicated to offer-ing one-of-a-kind merchandise and a unique patron experience.

Hyde Park Square also features many events that never cease to delight including the annual Hyde Park Art Show (celebrating its 46th year) that takes place the first Sunday

Cincinnati’s Crown Jewel: Hyde Park Square

in October (October 7, 2012 10:00-5:00). This is the largest juried show in the Midwest which features over 200 artists from around the area and across the country. The Hyde Park Farmers Market takes place every Sunday 9:30-1:30 June through October on Erie Avenue between Edwards Road & Michigan Avenue and May & Novem-ber at the US Bank parking lot/3424 Edwards Road. The annual Hyde Park Blast which features children’s and adult running races, a nationally ranked cycling race and a spectacular street party is June 30, 2012 from 8:00 a.m. to midnight. The annual Hyde Park Square Sidewalk Sale is August 23-26 and the annual Holiday Tree Lighting event with carriage rides, Santa arrival, carolers and more takes place the Friday after Thanksgiving (November 23, 2012).

Though many consider Hyde Park to be one of the most desirable, pres-tigious and safe neighborhoods to live in the city, it’s worth noting that there is a true diversity in Hyde Park hous-

ing ranging from multi-million-dollar river-view estates to mid-range family homes to high-rise full-service con-dominium buildings to starter homes as well as a wide variety of home and apartment rental opportunities. Hyde Park real estate enjoys resplendent architecture, price value stability and location, location, location! For more information visit www.digs-home.com

Hyde Park is also home to some of Cincinnati’s finest academically successful public and private schools in the region including The Summit Country Day School, St. Mary School, Kilgour School (a Cincinnati Public School with a rating of Academic Excellent with Distinction) and others. F indlay Market is Ohio’s oldest continuously oper-ated public market and

one of Cincinnati’s most cherished institutions. The historic market was built in 1852 and has been in continuous operation since 1855. The Market is located just blocks from downtown in Over The Rhine, a dense historic neigh-borhood rich in 19th century architecture.

Open Tuesday through Sunday, Findlay Market is a year round home to three dozen indoor merchants selling fresh meat, poultry, produce, flowers, cheese, deli and many types of ethnic foods. There are also a large number of retailers offering a wide variety of products includ-ing organic pet foods, a wine shop and a complete array of spices.

On Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays from April to November the Market also hosts a thriving farmers market, dozens of out-

door vendors, numerous street performers and many special events.

Many of the best and most well known chefs in Cincinnati purchase their fresh ingredients from the market. Visitors come to the Market for the sights, sounds and scents of an old-fashioned public market. The incredible variety of fresh foods, bargains and people watching are addi-tional reasons for visiting and for a quintessential urban shopping experience.

Art In The MarketYou will find many local arti-

sans selling everything from fine art and photographs, handmade craft goods, jewelry, handmade soaps, candles, woven baskets, pottery and more in the weekend market.

Step inside the center tower of the Market and you will find embedded in the floor, an 8ft. handmade mosaic, depicting the

The Findlay MarketMarket’s history in 50 year panels, metal sculpture on buildings, murals, a butterfly garden south of the market house and more that make the Market a rich, colorful place to visit time and again!

Findlay Market Opening Day Parade

The annual Findlay Market Opening Day Parade is organized by the Market’s merchants. This parade makes baseball’s Opening Day in Cincinnati very distinctive. The parade with its many par-ticipants includes floats, marching bands and many other entries of local interest is part of the reason Opening Day in Cincinnati is treated like a National Holiday. The 2012 parade will be held on April 5 prior to the Cincinnati Reds home opener against the Florida Marlins. For more informa-tion please visit: www.findlaymarketparade.comwww.findlaymarket.org

Come and spend the afternoon! Browse the market, have some breakfast, lunch or stay for both. Check out the incred-ible displays of the freshest seafood, meat, poultry, spices and dry goods in the country.

A true one stop shopping experience where you can put to-gether an incredibly fresh meal featuring your favorite meat and vegetables and top them off with the perfect seasonings.

A shopping experience - with the emphasis on experience - that is simply irreplaceable. The quality and value of the products available is unparalleled.

On Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays from April to No-vember the Market also hosts a thriving farmers market, doz-ens of outdoor vendors, numerous street performers, and lots of special events.
