Proclaiming God's Word towardsNational Transformation
(Based on Jonah 3:1-10 and Matthew 5:13-16)
Like “Jonah in the belly of the fish”—this is how I imagine thePhilippines in the present moment of our history as a nation. Beingthe only predominantly Christian nation in Asia (aside from EastTimor) we too have been called to proclaim God’s Word to the restof Asia, the way Jonah had been asked to preach God’s Word toNineveh. But very much like the reluctant prophet who runs away,we end up in the belly of the fish. We have as it were allowed cor-ruption and social injustice to swallow us and drag our nation intothe depths of moral decay. Now—in the belly of the fish—is the op-portune time for a collective soul searching; it is the right moment torespond to God’s call to mission if we want to get out of the bowelsof the monster that has swallowed us and see the light of day again.
From the shores of Batanes in the north to the mountain rangesof the Cordillera and Sierra Madre, down to the islands of Panayand the hills of Bohol, all the way to the blue waters of Tawi-tawi andJolo, our mandate is to let God’s Word ring out as Good News andbring about social change in our country. This is a tall order indeed, and like the prophets of old who recoiled in fear and trepidation dueto their awareness of their own sinfulness and inadequacy, we toomust realize pretty soon that it is God Himself who will do this. It isabout Him, not us. All He asks of us is to cooperate with Him, to lendHim our voice and serve as His mouthpiece, so that, by reading theScripture and proclaiming it vigorously, God’s powerful Word will beheard and will bring about genuine conversion.
To know what it means to prophesy as Jonah did, i.e., to speakon God’s behalf and to bring about moral renewal in our country, perhaps we can follow the words of exhortation contained in the an-cient rite of ordination of deacons: “Receive the Word of God whoseherald you now are. Believe what you read; teach what you be-lieve, and practice what you teach.” While it is important to makecopies of the Bible available to every Filipino home so that we getthem to read it, we must insist that it is not enough to justread! We must put faith in what we read—as God’s Word for us inthe here and now. As recommended by Verbum Domini, a prayer-ful group reading of the Bible (lectio divina) can be the most potentway of building basic ecclesial communities. This can happen only ifour reading allows us to grow consciously in faith together like cellsand tissues in the body of Christ. And then again, it is not enoughto just believe; we must teach what we believe! The task ofproclaiming the Gospel is not a monopoly of the ordained andthe religious; the laity too must actively do their part in work ofevangelization. Finally, if we truly want to be credible witnessesto the Word, we must practice what we teach! Otherwise, we be-come like the proverbial “house built on sand” which fell when “therains came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beatagainst that house.” (Mt. 7:24-27)
Christian life is discipleship in mission. We cannot be a Churchturned in only on ourselves and preoccupied only with our Churchyaffairs. The final message of the Synod that gave birth to Verbum
Domini concludes with “the roads of the Word: Mission”. We are aChurch in mission, consciously reaching out to the modern worldand witnessing to Christ, our Lord and Savior. His mandate to us isclear: “You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of theworld.” (Mt. 5:13-16)

May They Be OneBible Campaign
“Father…May they be one...
just as you and I are one.” John 17:21-22
May They Be One, our biggest Bible advo-cacy, began as a dream for 5 million Biblesfor poor families in the Philippines. The dreamis becoming a reality. Since the project waslaunched in September 2008, May They Be One(MTBO) Bible Campaign has also become asymbol of unity and cooperation among theEpiscopal Commission for the Biblical Apos-tolate of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of thePhilippines (ECBA-CBCP), the Philippine BibleSociety (PBS), other Christian churches and layorganizations involved in Bible ministry andapostolate.
There has been a growing demand for MTBOBibles from Catholic parishes throughout the Phil-ippines. Statistics to note:
82 of the 86 Dioceses have embraced theproject and ordered MTBO Bibles and pro-vided Bible formation/study programmesfor those who received Bibles.
1,200 Parishes have become involved withdistribution and formation activities.
203,528 MTBO Bibles in 8 different lan-guages were distributed in 2010.
At least 300,000 will be distributed in2011.
Number of prayer partners and supporters, here and abroad is steadily increasing.
The next stage of the campaign, the Hand-written Unity Bible Project, designed tofoster greater interest in God’s Word andraise funds for MTBO Bibles was launchedin January 2011.

How wonderful it is, how pleasant, for God’speople to live together in harmony!
Psalm 133:1
I pray that they may all be one.Father! May they be in us,
just as you are in me and I am in you.May they be one,
so that the world will believethat you sent me.
John 17:21
We have many parts in the one body, and allthese parts have different functions. In the
same way, though we are many, we are onebody in union with Christ, and we are all joined
to each other as different parts of one body.Romans 12:4-5
