At the Capital District YMCA, we strengthen community through our efforts involving youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. To manage our performance and communicate our case for philanthropic support from donors and partners, we developed a strategic plan and Association goals.

We recognize that our success is a direct result of the efforts of the thousands of dedicated volunteers and individuals who are part of our organization. Our greatest strength comes when we work together to help others.

Guided by our mission to help those in every community we serve, the Capital District YMCA has defined these goals:

• Position the Y as the region’s premier charitable organization focused on strengthening community.

• Develop the Y as the region’s charity of choice.

• Become the region’s destination for diverse, inclusive, high-quality staff, volunteers and major donors who passionately support our mission, vision and guiding principles.

• Develop and meet best practices with all programs that address the needs of teens, families and seniors.

• Promote the Activate America program as supporting healthy lifestyles and creating healthy communities.

• Strengthen our presence in under-served communities through capital investments and expanded services.

We nurture the potential in every child.

The values and skills children learn early on are vital building blocks for their future.

Because of the Y, young people from across the Capital District and beyond are more engaged in their families and their communities.

At the Y, children and youth learn positive behaviors, explore their unique talents and interests, and are given opportunities to realize their potential.

As a result, Y kids are more confident and engaged.

Apartments in Troy. So Tina, the Troy Housing Authority,

and the Y teamed up with the Northwestern Mutual Financial

Network and were awarded a Play Everyday Outside grant to energize their community.

“The results were amazing!” explained Tina.

With the Y’s help, empty fields came alive with activity. A population that knew very little about nutrition and exercise is now energized and looking for healthy options. “When the Y first came, they promised the kids snacks. Our kids and parents looked around and asked where the snacks were. You explained that the fruit and water are the snacks. Now when the kids come, they go right to the fruit and are excited to try new, healthy foods.”

The Y is strengthening the Griswold Heights community for everyone.

We work to help improve the health and well-being of our members.

Being healthy involves much more than being physically active. It’s about maintaining a balanced spirit, mind and body. The Y is a place where you can work toward that balance by challenging yourself to learn a new skill or hobby, by fostering connections with friends through lifelong learning programs and by bringing your loved ones closer together through our family-centered activities.

We Are FAMilY“We lined up with little fan fare. No one corralling us into heats. We all just casually walked up to the line and as it would be, I was at the front of the line. It wasn’t intended,” explained JoDee Kenney, recalling the moments immediately before her attempt to complete her first 5K.

For the previous 10 weeks, JoDee had been training with the YMCA’s Couch to 5K group. Now, alongside her groupmates at the starting line, JoDee jumped around as Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family” played over the loudspeaker.

“I could feel my heart racing before we even started,” she recalled. “Why did this run mean so much to me?

It was an effort to squash years of fear, and overcome the mean girl in my brain who is constantly sabotaging my efforts.”

As the race progressed, JoDee was encouraged at several locations on the course by her family’s supportive cheers and signs. When the going got really tough, her trainer, Sarah, ran beside her, offering an encouraging voice to assure JoDee: “You’ve got this!”

JoDee was overcome with emotion as she crossed the finish line, looking up and seeing her children and husband glowing with pride, hugs at the ready. JoDee’s years of fear have been replaced by her accomplishment. “I ran a 5K!”

We give back to our community by actively supporting our neighbors.

We know that when we work as one, we move people and communities forward. That’s why we’re committed to providing support to our neighbors and opportunities for kids, adults and families to give, join, volunteer, and advocate for the Y.

Doing gooD, one FAMilY At A tiMePregnant with her daughter Gia, Fawn knew that the softball-sized tumor the doctors had discovered in her son Jacob’s brain would undoubtedly change their lives forever.

Since that discovery, the doctor’s visits haven’t stopped. With so much of the focus on Jacob, Gia (now 3) often has to ‘fend for herself’.

“That’s the beauty of Circle of Champs,” explained Fawn. “It’s not just for the child who’s sick, it’s really to provide the whole family with positive, relaxed activities.”

Circle of Champs is a Capital District YMCA program that provides support

and activities to families with a child who is battling a life-threatening illness. The program helps by giving families a support network beyond the hospital and doctor’s office.

With the Y’s help, Fawn is able to be “an independent single mother who can take care of my family without feeling like my children are missing out on ‘normal’ activities.”
