It all began in the fall of 2008, when Jessica’s big sister carried her off the school bus, piggy back. Jessica was in pain, and they thought she had pulled a muscle in herback while playing volleyball. It was the beginning of a long journey thatstretched this family to the limits, but has eventually made them a closer unitthan they could have imagined.
Jessica’s pain continued that fall. She didn’t gain weight and wasn’t herself. Doctors testedand tested, but they couldn’t pinpoint her problem; Jessica kept getting worse. By March,2009, she was in crisis. That’s when her dad called MD Anderson Cancer Center. Within a few minutes, he was talking to Dr. Dennis Hughes, a specialist in Ewing’s Sarcoma. Dr. Hughes said, “Get her here as fast as you can!” A very long ten-hour ambulance ride from Mobile, Alabama delivered Jessica and her parents to MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital in Houston, Texas. Dr. Hughes was waiting for them in the lobby at 2:00 a.m. on a Sunday morning. He went right to work!
Ewing’s Sarcoma is a cancer of the bone and soft tissue. Jessica’s treatment wasn’t quick oreasy, but she has been clear of cancer since the summer of 2011. During her treatment shebegan going to art classes and discovered that she is an artist. Proof of that? She has fivedesigns in the Holiday 2012 Collection: Adore Him, Holly Boot, Popcorn Tree, RudyReindeer and Wood Dove.
Now back home, she is enjoying all the things that a teenager who is 16 should do! She loves her friends—especially Rachel and Kennedy—as they eat out, go to the movies, shopand decorate their nails. Cross-country running and soccer are also part of her activities now.But it’s that big sister that is so important. Stephanie chose to go to college in their homecity and to live at home so that she and Jessica can stay connected. She recently textedphotos of prom shoes to Jessica because shecouldn’t decide which pair to buy. Jessicawas happy to make thatdecision for her! As afamily, they are happyto be back together!

Riley is one amazing kid! He is 6 years old and in first grade this year. That soundspretty ordinary. What’s amazing about Riley is his joyful attitude and the way hehas adapted to a difficult treatment for cancer. When he was two years old, Rileywas diagnosed with a rare plexiform fibrohistiocytic tumor in his left arm andshoulder. Both arm and shoulder were amputated in 2008. His mother, Rachel, says there were no other treatments. The cancer was gone. No radiation. No chemotherapy.
The first thing Riley asked for when he awoke from surgery was his monster trucktoys. His mother dug them out of a bag. Riley took the toys from his mother byholding them with his feet and putting them on his chest to play. At that moment, she knew Riley would adapt and be okay.
His amazing adaptation to life continues, especially in his favorite sport, baseball.Riley made the T-Ball All Star Team last summer in Pearland, Texas because he is adept at batting with one arm, catching and throwing. When hecatches a ball, he tosses it up in the air, drops his black suedeRawlings glove on the ground, catches the ball again and thenthrows it! All of this done in the blink of an eye. He wasinvited to throw out the opening pitch at a Houston Astrosgame in mid-September. Last winter, he went on theRehabilitation Ski Trip funded by the Children’s Art Project. He adapted to that sport quickly, too, skiing the difficult bluetrails before he left.
Riley’s free time is spent participating in educationalactivities (Mom Rachel is a third grade teacher) where he also excels in reading and art. Bear Bear, his favorite stuffed animal, is Riley’s frequentcompanion, but Bear Bear does not enjoy hot dogs, mac & cheese or little tomatoes as much as Rileydoes. His parents will always be there for Riley. “We will support him in anything hewants to do,” she says. “We arejust glad to help the Children’sArt Project and MD AndersonChildren’s Cancer Hospitalbecause it saved our son’s life.”We will be watching, Riley. We know you can do anythingyou set your mind to!

The Teddy Bear Clinic is a roleplaying experience for young
cancer patients, planned by theChild Life team. Patients and
siblings are given a teddy bear totake around to interactive stationsrepresenting different departments
in the hospital. Patients playthe role of doctors and providetreatment to the teddy bears.
This activity helps the children to better understand their
treatment and also allows staff to interact with patients
away from the usual clinicalexperiences.

Richard is one cool dude, and he has all the credentials to prove it! His battle withcancer began when he was 9 years old. Treatment for rhabdomyosarcoma, a cancerof the tissue, was successful. During his time as a patient, four pieces of his artworkwere chosen by the Children’s Art Project and printed as cards (see World Peacepage 28). Then we lost track of Richard.
Where was he? After graduating from high school, Richard enrolled at TheUniversity of Texas at Austin, majoring in engineering. Richard soon decidedengineering wasn’t for him. In 2004, he quietly enlisted in the U. S. Army before telling his family what he was doing. The Army trained him as a licensed vocational nurse and then deployed him to a CSH,or Combat Support Hospital, in Iraq. Being a medic inthe Army is not easy duty. Medics are targets, becausethey save other soldiers. They are taught to fight andsave themselves and then others. After four hard yearsin the Army, Richard decided to finish his collegedegree and become a registered nurse. With thatdegree in hand he returned to MD Anderson where heis now a clinical nurse, giving back to others with cancer.
Richard’s interests are wide and deep. He engaged CAP’s favorite photographer, Kevin McGowan, in a technicaldiscussion of cameras, lenses andlighting, because photography is one of his passions. He loves to playUltimate Frisbee, a no-contact sportthat is rigorous and fun, one of thereasons he is so fit. Somewhere in oneof those games he met his girlfriend, another special interest! He plays ping pong with a vengeance, using acustom-made paddle that he craftedhimself. And Richard has not left thechildren of MD Anderson behind. He loved the art classes and Camp Star Trails when he was a patient, so Richard decided to return to camp and serve as a volunteercounselor. The combination of all these skills and interests, plus his concern for others, makes Richard not only cool, but an admirable, caring and successful man.

In 2003, when Kierra was 8 years old, she fell off a seesaw and broke her arm. Her parents felt guilty that they had built the playground in their backyard untildoctors told them that she had a cancerous tumor on her arm. The tumor was the reason for the break. Had she not fallen, the osteosarcoma would have goneundiagnosed and her long-term outcome might have been much different. Doctorsat MD Anderson Children’s Cancer Hospital moved a bone from Kierra’s leg toreplace the bone in her arm. Follow-up treatment was not easy, but Kierra’s greatfamily walked every step with her. The family dog, Cameron, knew Kierra was sickbefore the family and doctors did. The little Bichon Frise would not leave Kierra’sside and continues watching over her throughout treatment.
The Kierra—or Kiki—of today is a whirlwind of activity! A sophomore in highschool this year, Kierra was named the High School Studentof the Year last spring in her Aldine, Texas school. Thehonor was due to her great grades and involvement in so many activities: Student Council, Girls’ Club, choir, Legacy Foreign Language Club and more. Herfavorite subjects are spelling and biology. Kierra alsolikes to volunteer, reading to children in day carecenters and helping out in nursing homes. Laquitoand Gregory, Kierra’s parents, believe that theirdaughter’s diagnosis provided her with a deeperunderstanding of life and a maturity beyond her 16 years.
Kierra loves the camps funded by theChildren’s Art Project: Camp Star Trails and now Camp A.O.K for Anderson’sOlder Kids. Her sister, Sierra, who is off to college this fall, joined Kierra at these camps. She also loves the art classes. Kierra’s art is detailed, distinctive and always tells a story, because she also likes to write. Herexperiences at MD Anderson Children’sCancer Hospital have influenced her in many ways. Kierra’s dad says, “When shecompletes treatment, she will land back at MD Anderson as a pediatrician.” Thatcommitment to others facing cancer alsoreflects the generous attitude of her parents, who have given Kierra a solid foundation toclimb any mountain or ford any stream.
