The term “student-athlete” signifies something extraordinary on the campus of Bucknell University.

Being a Bison means that you have the rare blend of physical skills along with the drive and passion needed to succeed at the highest level of collegiate athletics.

Being a Bison also means that you are a scholar first and foremost. You be-lieve that values associated with Division I athletics, such as time management, leadership, teamwork and grace under pressure, are but a part of a well-rounded college experience.

At Bucknell, our students, faculty and staff pride themselves as national leaders in upholding the scholar-athlete ideal that balances a challenging academic program with the demands of successful Division I athletics.

Being a Bison means that you have pledged to be a student-athlete in the purest sense. In doing so, you will be rewarded for a lifetime.

“... the pursuit of athletics in college need not interfere with a fellow’s studies, and if you give a boy a well-developed body his brain will get the benefit of it.”

— Christy Mathewson, in his book Won in the Ninth, written in 1910

Not only is Brendan Burgdorf an All-Patriot League

and All-Mid-Atlantic performer on the field, he is

also an NSCAA Scholar All-American majoring in

physics.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICSSETTING THE STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE

Bucknell takes great pride in its commitment to excellence on and off the playing fields. From Presidents’ Cups to Academic All-Americans to gradua-tion rates that are ranked annually in the national top-10, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class when it comes to upholding the scholar-athlete ideal.

• According to federal data released by the NCAA each fall, Bucknell’s student-athlete graduation rate annually ranks in the top 10 among all Division I institutions. Bucknell has led the nation in graduation rates twice, and in the most recent survey in the fall of 2011, Bucknell ranked No. 4 in the nation.

• Bucknell has claimed a league-high 127 Patriot League Scholar-Ath-letes of the Year since the league’s inception as an all-sports conference in 1990-91.

• A total of 392 Bison appeared on the Patriot League Academic Hon-or Roll in 2011-12 after recording a GPA of 3.2 or better during their sport’s competition season. Among all BU student-athletes, 266 made the Dean’s List with GPAs of 3.5 or better in the spring 2012 semester.

• In addition to the 121 Capital One Academic All-Americans produced since 1970, Bucknell has also claimed 329 Academic All-District honor-ees over the same span, including 15 in 2011-12.

• Bucknell has earned 91 Patriot League championships in 22 years in the league. In addition, Bucknell has had 113 conference players of the year, 99 PL coaches of the year and a whopping 533 individual league champions from sports such as cross country, track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and golf.

• 24 of Bucknell’s 27 varsity squads posted team GPAs of 3.0 or better in the spring of 2012.

• Bucknell has captured the Patriot League Presidents’ Cup, signifying the league’s all-sports champion, 17 times in the 22-year history of the affiliation, including 13 of the last 15 years.

• Bucknell ranks FIFTH in the nation (to Nebraska, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford) in total number of Capital One Academic All-Amer-ica selections with 121.

• A major element in ensuring Bucknell’s commitment to athletics excel-lence is the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics & Recreation Center, which opened fully in 2003. One of the finest collegiate athletics facilities of its kind, the center includes the 4,000-seat Sojka Pavilion, the Olym-pic class Kinney Natatorium, the Krebs Family Fitness Center and the Berger Family Weight Room. A Hall of Fame area, a display of Bucknell’s Medal of Honor recipients, a new Academic All-America wall, a sports medicine suite, modern offices for coaches and staff, and locker room and classroom space are also included in the facility’s layout.

BUCKNELL BISON ATHLETICSA NATIONAL MODEL IN PROMOTING THE SCHOLAR-ATHLETE IDEAL

Bucknell Athletics is first and foremost a student-centered organization, one that strives to be a national leader when it comes to operating by a true scholar-athlete model. At Bucknell, student-athletes’ academic programs are their first priority, and providing a competitive Division I athletics program only advances the mission, values and residential learning goals of the university. To that end, the Department of Athletics and Recreation proactively seeks ways to assist student-athletes in their daily academic pursuits. Below are just some of the student-athlete support programs currently in place.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE: The faculty athletics representative (FAR) is a member of the faculty or administrative staff who is designated to represent Bucknell in its relationships with the NCAA and the Patriot League. Bucknell’s FAR is Mitch Chernin, Professor of Biology. The FAR can enhance the student-athlete experience by pro-moting a balance between academics, athletics and the social lives of student-athletes, which affords them opportunities to enjoy the full range of collegiate experiences available to students generally.

SIDELINE COACH PROGRAM: This program is a truly unique initiative in Division I college athletics, and it involves the invitation of a member of the faculty, administration, staff or community by one of Bucknell’s 27 varsity teams. The participant has the opportunity to discuss the overall program with the respective coaching staff, including practice preparation and strategy for the upcoming contest. The sideline coach attends a practice session and an actual intercollegiate competition, where he/she is intro-duced to the team and gains rarely seen insight into the relationships that exist between player-coach and player-player. The purpose of the Sideline Coaches Program is to foster a better understanding by the faculty and administration of the roles played by coaches and athletes in the university’s competitive intercollegiate athletic arena.

ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT CENTER: In the Fall of 2005, the Department of Athletics opened a study/computer lab for student-athletes on the concourse level of Sojka Pavilion. The center is outfitted with computers, a laser printer, four television monitors and a projection unit with computer, VCR and DVD player. Additionally, the study lab can be used as a meeting place for group projects, tutorial area or just a secluded and quiet study space before or after practice.

LAPTOP PROGRAM: The Department of Athletics owns a number of laptop computers that may be signed out by student-athletes for use on away trips.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE (SAAC): Representatives from each varsity team comprise the SAAC, which is designed to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare, and fostering a positive student-athlete image. The Committee is an invaluable resource for pro-moting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes; promoting communication between athletics and campus-wide administration; providing feedback and insight, as well as soliciting responses into department issues and proposed NCAA legislation; building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams; organizing community service projects and efforts; creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees; serving as a collective voice of campus student-athletes; and disseminating information to the student-athlete body.

BUCKNELL BISON LEADERSHIP ACADEMY: In 2011-12, the Department of Athletics launched the Bucknell Bison Leadership Academy. As part of a Patriot League-wide leadership initiative, this program is designed to help student-athletes learn how to be effective leaders on and off the playing fields. The Leadership Academy features pro-gramming and instruction that bridge theory, development and real experiences in an interactive learning environment. Through this endeavor, team leaders can enhance their impact on their teammates’ and their program’s performance immediately and for years to come.

Bucknell Athletics Facilities

Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium: The home of Bison soccer.

The Bucknell University Department of Ath-letics and Recreation prides itself on setting the standard of excellence when it comes to success both on the playing fields and in the classroom. With 17 Patriot League Presidents’ Cups in 22 years, national leadership in graduation rates, 121 Aca-demic All-Americans in 42 years and 127 Patriot League Scholar-Athletes in 22 years, Bucknell is clearly at the head of the class in terms of uphold-ing the scholar-athlete model.

The addition of the Kenneth G. Langone Athletics and Recreation Center, one of the finest collegiate athletics and recreation venues of its kind, ensures the continuation of that success.

Celebrating its 10th birthday in 2012-13, the facility has enhanced each of Bucknell’s 27 varsity programs and has greatly expanded the scope of its growing intramural and recreational sports offerings. A visually appealing structure located along Moore Avenue on the “downhill” side of campus, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center was designed to reach out to all members of the campus community, including the student body, varsity student-athletes, faculty, staff and alumni.

Three primary venues lie within the facility: the Arthur D. Kinney Jr. Na-tatorium, the 4,000-seat Gary A. Sojka Pavilion and the Krebs Family Fitness Center. Other features include a new location for the Bucknell Athletics Hall of Fame, a display of Bucknell’s Congressional Medal of Honor recipients, a brand new display highlighting Bucknell’s all-time Academic All-Americans, a sports medicine and athletic training suite, classrooms, modern offices for coaches and staff and increased locker room space for varsity and recreational athletes.

The facility is named in honor of Ken Langone, a 1957 Bucknell gradu-ate who, along with his wife Elaine, pledged $11 million toward the center’s construction. Langone was a member of the university Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1996.

One of the special qualities of the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center is the manner in which it supplements the pre-existing facilities. The construction surrounds Gerhard Fieldhouse and historic Davis Gymnasium, which has been restored as a competition venue for the Bison wrestling and volleyball teams, as well as intramural, recreation and other varsity practice activities.

As Bucknell continues to strive toward its mission of setting the standard of excellence in college athletics, the Langone Athletics and Recreation Center becomes the centerpiece in an already impressive cache of athletics facilities that includes the 13,100-seat Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium and its new FieldTurf and 8-lane track surface; the scenic Bucknell Golf Club and brand new indoor instructional golf center; the newly refurbished Depew Field (baseball) and Becker Field (softball); and Emmitt Field and Graham Field at Holmes Stadium, the new portion of the West Fields project that includes covered grandstand seats, ticket and concession areas, team rooms, a train-ing room and a press box area for soccer, field hockey and women’s lacrosse.

After leading the 2009 Bison to perhaps the greatest year in program history, Brendan Nash, guided the team to a Patriot League championship repeat — and a third conference title in five years — in 2010. Now Nash re-turns for his 14th season as head coach and 17th season as a member of the Bucknell men’s soccer program, and he is looking to get the Bison back to that championship level in 2012.

Nash was appointed the program’s 13th head coach in 1999 after serving as the assistant coach for three seasons. Nash, who owns the highest win-ning percentage (.545) in program history and is second on the wins list with 123, has been successful throughout his tenure at Bucknell. The squad has finished at least .500 in the competitive Patriot League in seven of the last nine seasons under his direction, and in three of the last six years the team has captured Patriot League championships, with NCAA Tournament first-round wins following two of those titles.

In 2006, the Bison won their first Patriot League Tournament title and ad-vanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament thanks to an overtime goal that gave it a 1-0 first-round victory at George Mason.

In 2009, Bucknell set program records for wins (17) and shutouts (12) in a season, captured the Patriot League regular-season title, defeated Lafay-ette and American to win the PL Tournament on its home field, and blanked Princeton 1-0 in the NCAA Tournament. As an encore, the 2010 Bison won the Patriot League crown as the No. 4 seed, knocking off host Colgate and American in the tournament. A 1-0 overtime loss to homestanding Penn ended the team’s run of NCAA first-round success.

Bucknell’s success under Nash has not been limited to the championship seasons. In 2008, Bucknell played No. 10 Ohio State to a 1-1 tie and then defeated Penn State 2-0 to claim the team title at the Nittany Lion Classic in September. It was Bucknell’s first win over Penn State since 1975. The Bison repeated the feat with a come-from-behind 2-1 win over No. 15 Penn State last season in State College.

In 2002, Nash led the Bison to a then-school-record 13 wins. The next year they won 11 for a two-year win total of 24, which was a school record until the 2008-09 teams combined for 25.

On its way to the 11 wins in 2003, Bucknell went undefeated in Patriot League play to claim its second Patriot League regular-season title and first since 1990. Highlighting the campaign was a 1-0 win over second-ranked Maryland, the highest-ranked team Bucknell has defeated in its history. As a result of the successful season, Nash was named Patriot League Coach of the Year for the second time and NSCAA Mid-Atlantic Coach of Year for the first time. He would earn those honors again in 2009.

During the record-breaking 2002 campaign, Bucknell posted a 13-5-1 re-cord. The team also showed off its defensive skills, tying the previous Bison standard for shutouts in a year with 10. The team posted its second win over a nationally ranked program under Nash’s tutelage, defeating No. 18 Pitts-burgh on a penalty kick.

In his first year at the helm of the Orange and Blue, Nash coached his team to the first winning season in six years, posting a 9-7-1 mark in 1999. He followed that impressive debut with a 9-10-2 season in 2000, taking his team to the Patriot League playoffs for the first time in seven years. As a result, Nash was tabbed the Patriot League Coach of the Year.

Nash helped 2010 graduate Conor O’Brien become Bucknell’s first All-

American in 33 years as well as a finalist for the Hermann Trophy, given to the national player of the year. Two of his players, O’Brien and Michael Look-ingland ‘05, have gone on to play professional soccer after graduating from Bucknell, with O’Brien currently playing for a superleague team in Denmark.

Along with on-field success, Nash’s teams have excelled in the classroom. He has coached five Academic All-Americans: 2001 graduate Ryan Weber, 2005 graduate Jonathan Hemmert, who earned the prestigious award twice, Chris Hennings in 2008 and Patrick Selwood in 2009. Additionally, the Bison have earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award every year since 1997.

A 1994 graduate of Trenton State College (now College of New Jersey) with a degree in communications, Nash was hired by Bucknell after acting as assistant coach at his alma mater for three seasons.

While playing for the Lions, Nash appeared in the NCAA Division III na-tional championship in 1991. His senior year concluded by being named the recipient of the John Heslin Award (leadership, commitment and sportsman-ship). During his last two seasons as an assistant for the Trenton State squad, Nash helped post a 34-6-5 record for the school, including a 19-2-2 mark in 1994. The Blue and Gold finished third in the nation in Division III that season. Prior to attending TSC, Nash was a member of the men’s soccer team at Long-wood College. As a sophomore, he was named First Team All-Conference as well as the Defensive Player of the Year in the conference.

Nash is currently the Director of the Bison Soccer Camps and has also worked numerous other summer camps around the country. He has been in-strumental in organizing several youth clinics throughout the Susquehanna Valley. He holds the USSF “B” license and the National Soccer Coaches As-sociation of America Advanced National Diploma. In addition, Nash is the Patriot League representative on the Division I Men’s Soccer College Coaches Committee, and is a member the NSCAA All-America Committee.

Nash hails from Neptune, N.J., and attended high school at Christian Brothers Academy, which is renowned for its perennial soccer talent. In ad-dition to his bachelor’s degree, he received his master’s degree from the Col-lege of New Jersey for Sports Administration in 1997.

Both of Nash’s brothers, Jamie and Brian, coach soccer in New Jersey. Ja-mie is the head coach at Boonton High School, while Brian coaches the boys’ junior varsity soccer team at Marlboro High School.

A native of Lock Haven, Pa., Long gradu-ated from his hometown school with a bach-elor of science degree in secondary education and social studies, with a minor in coaching. As a student-athlete on the men’s soccer team

from 2003-06, he was a two-time First Team All-PSAC selection and a two-time All-Northeast Region selection, making first team in 2005 and second team in 2006. A two-year team captain, Long won the team’s Player of the Year Award as a junior and Coaches’ Award as a senior, was a three-time PSAC Scholar-Athlete, and was a Third Team Academic All-American during his se-nior campaign.

During the 2005 spring semester, he studied at Hope University in Liver-pool, England. Long also played on the Lock Haven men’s basketball team in 2006-07.

While completing his coursework at Lock Haven, Long served as a stu-dent assistant coach with the Eagles in 2007-08. He then moved on to East Stroudsburg as a graduate assistant coach as he completed his master’s de-gree in sports management with a 4.0 grade-point average in August 2009. Last fall, he remained at ESU as an assistant coach, helping the Warriors to an 11-win season.

Long has been very active in the summer camp and club soccer scene as a coach, camp counselor and tournament director. Prior to his arrival at Buck-nell, he was an assistant coach with the Central Pennsylvania ODP in 2008, and in 2009 was the player development system director for the Pocono Area Shooting Stars F.C. In the last year he has helped organize the Bison Soccer Camp and the North Union United Summer Camp.

Former Bucknell assistant coach and long-time Lewisburg boys soccer coach Pete El-lis returned to the Bison sidelines in 2007 as a volunteer assistant coach and is now in his sixth year in that role.

After prowling the Bucknell sidelines as an assistant from 1984-87, Ellis moved just down the road to Lewisburg Area High School, where he became a health and physical edu-cation teacher, a post he still holds, and boys soccer coach. In his 19 years at the helm of the Green Dragons, Ellis compiled a sparkling 261-

125-37 record, including 23-3-0 in his final season in 2006. A two-time Pennsylvania Soccer Coaches Association State Coach of the

Year and a four-time Susquehanna Valley Conference Coach of the Year, El-lis led Lewisburg to unprecedented success over his final decade. The team won three Susquehanna Valley Conference titles, was a District IV finalist seven times, advanced to the PIAA playoffs eight times and won the 2000 Class A state championship during that span.

A resident of Lewisburg, Ellis relinquished his coaching duties with Lew-isburg to spend more time with his family and afford him the opportunity to watch his daughter, Roz, play field hockey at Iowa.

The strength and conditioning pro-gram at Bucknell received a major boost in 2003 with the completion of the sparkling 15,000-square-foot Krebs Family Fitness Cen-ter and Berger Family Weight Room, as well as the hiring of Jerry Shreck as the program’s first full-time strength & conditioning coordinator.

A 1996 graduate of East Stroudsburg with a degree in movement studies and exercise science, Shreck is charged with implementing detailed daily strength and conditioning rou-tines for each of Bucknell’s athletic programs.

The general philosophy of the Bison strength program is year-round pe-riodization with a high-intensity base, supplemented with functional and sport-specific training. Training programs for most teams employ explosion techniques with power bands and plyometrics.

The ultimate goal of the strength and conditioning program is the pre-vention of injuries and training athletes to their peak physical condition.

A native of nearby Montgomery, Pa., Shreck had served as the athletic trainer for the Bucknell men’s basketball team for three seasons prior to his appointment as strength and conditioning coordinator. He is a member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the National Coun-cil of Strength and Fitness.

MATT HANEY Volunteer Assistant Coach

York ‘03 • First Season

Matt Haney is in his first season with the Bucknell men’s soccer staff, where he works with the Bison goalkeepers. From 2000-03 and 2009-11, Haney was the lead assistant coach and goalkeeper coach at York College. He also served as interim head coach there in 2001.

Haney was a collegiate goalkeeper himself at both Wilkes and Bloomsburg. At Wilkes he helped his team set school records for wins (16) and shutouts (13) in 1991, and a year later the Colonels won the MAC Northeast Division. Haney was Team MVP at Bloomsburg in 1994.

During his first coaching stint at York, Haney completed his bachelor of science degree in elementary education, and he earned a master’s degree at Saint Francis University in 2009. Haney served as an assistant coach with the Red Flash while working on his gradu-ate studies. From 2003-05, Haney was head boys’ soccer coach at nearby Millville Area High School. He has also coached the Elite and Premier U17 teams with the FC York Soccer Club, and among his extensive camp experi-ence he has coached at the Bucknell Bison Soccer Camp since 2008.

SEASON OUTLOOK

The veterans on the Bucknell men’s soccer team have experienced both ends of the emotional spec-trum so far in their collegiate careers. The Bison cap-tured back-to-back Patriot League championships in 2009 and 2010, and the current seniors were part of a team that won an NCAA Tournament first-round game at Princeton in 2009. Last year, however, despite some bright moments in non-league play, Bucknell slipped to 2-5-0 in the Patriot League and missed out on the postseason. Now this returning group is using that as motivation to get back to the top of the table in 2012.

Brendan Nash is back for his 13th season as head coach, and he is intrigued to see how his team responds this fall. The Bison did take a significant graduation hit, losing five starters from last year’s squad, but that is off-set by a very promising freshman class that appears will contribute at least two opening-day starters as well as a number of other key reserves.

Bucknell’s biggest losses come in the defensive half, including the goalkeeper tandem of Tommy Caso and Marc Hartmann along with starting backs Andrew Powell and Nader Sawtarie. All-Patriot League mid-fielder Luke Joyner and versatile midfielder Ryan Sap-pington were also four-year contributors. Despite the losses, Nash is left with a talented and notably multi-dimensional group that he believes will be able to find results in a number of different ways.

“Preseason and the early part of the schedule is go-ing to be all about finding the right combinations that we are going to need to be successful in Patriot League play,” said Nash, whose 123 career victories rank No. 2 all-time at Bucknell. “We are certainly not going to sac-rifice winning our non-league games, but we need to identify what kind of team we want to be. And I see that as more of a strength than a problem, because it means that we can utilize different formations and different combinations, adjusting to whatever we want to do or what our opponent is trying to do.”

On paper, losing two senior goalkeepers who have accounted for about 98 percent of the team’s minutes over the last four years seems problematic. But one look at the stable of young keepers in camp this fall should allay those fears. Freshman Mike Lansing is the probable opening-day starter. An imposing presence at 6’4” with a long wingspan, Lansing has displayed tre-mendous confidence and composure for a freshman, to go along with tremendous athleticism. He was out-standing in a 0-0 exhibition draw against a very good Monmouth team. Fellow 6’4” rookie Clarke Fox has also looked strong this preseason, as has last year’s Georgia 4A Player of the Year Vaughn Moore. Junior Orman Kim-

brough is the veteran of the unit, with 2:06 of field time in his career so far.

“It has been great having four keepers on the team, the most in my tenure here,” said Nash. “Mike Lansing has a chance to be a special player. He is very mature and has not been afraid to take charge. He easily passed our fitness test, running a 4.4 40-yard dash. Clarke, Vaughn and Orman give us great depth, and it has been a great training environment with them and our new goalkeeper coach Matt Haney. It has been much tough-er to score in training, which is helping our whole team. And having Matt here is really a psychological benefit to our keepers. They can go to him for technical advice, watch video and really gain a better understanding for the position. It’s been a big enhancement to the pro-gram.”

Nash acknowledges that the Bison must be better defensively than last season, when the team conceded 11 goals in seven Patriot League matches. By contrast, in the 2009 championship season, Bucknell allowed less than a goal per game for the entire season and set a school record with 12 shutouts.

Powell and Sawtarie were both strong and fast in the heart of the back four last season, and Nash has done some reshuffling in the back heading into 2012. First Team All-Patriot League defender Mayowa Alli moves from the left side to one of the center back posi-tions. Alli is one of the biggest two-way threats in the Patriot League. Last season he started every game at left back and still managed to lead the team and rank second in the league in scoring with seven goals. A ter-ror on set pieces due to his tremendous leaping abil-ity, Alli, won two Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week awards last season, in addition to one weekly de-fensive honor. Eight of his 10 career goals have come off his head. The 2010 Patriot League Rookie of the Year also has a tremendous throw-in, and he will still be uti-lized in that capacity.

Sophomore Brian Ward started every game last season in a holding defensive midfield position, and this year he moves to left back. Senior co-captain Col-lin Costello brings a physical presence to the center back position. Costello had not seen much field time until late last season, but he was impressive in five ap-pearances, including two starts. The right back position is still open for competition as the season draws near. Senior Jermaine Jarrett is the most experienced of the candidates, having been a starter since his freshman campaign. Freshman Connor Willings has drawn good early reviews from the coaching staff, and Nash says that he might even have a stronger throw than Alli. Sophomore John Miller is also battling for that position, while sophomores Mark Leibensperger and Rafael En-riquez-Hesles and freshman Mark Kramarchuk provide solid depth.

“How well the back four defends will define how successful our season ends up,” Nash predicted. “We have a lot of confidence in our goalkeepers, even though we are young there, but we need to make sure we are a lot tighter in the back. We are not afraid to give up shots, but we need to make sure they are low-per-centage shots.”

The midfield presents the biggest puzzle for the coaching staff, not because of a lack of talent, but be-cause so many of the Bison midfielders are versatile enough to play on the left, right or center. Nash an-ticipates using multiple combinations and formations early in the season to see what works best.

There is very little question about senior co-cap-tain Brendan Burgdorf, who was named to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List for the second straight year. The former Patriot League Offensive Player of the Year enters his final campaign with 17 goals and 10 assists in his career, although only two of those goals came in 2011 as he was forced to spend more time playing far-ther away from the opponent’s goal. Nash hopes to be able to get Burgdorf forward much more frequently this

year to utilize his size and speed. Much of that depends on the play of junior Josh

Butzke and freshman Chris Thorsheim in the center of the field. Butzke will likely slide into Ward’s former holding midfield spot, while Thorsheim will patrol the center mid position. Thorsheim has drawn some early comparisons to former Bison all-star and current pro Conor O’Brien, and Nash says that he has shown very good chemistry linking up with Burgdorf during the preseason.

Seniors Vinny Cinotti and CK Kumah, junior Joe Meyer and sophomore Jonathan Grad are the most experienced candidates for the two wing positions. Kumah has 61 career appearances and has scored some big goals for the Bison in his career. Cinotti can also play outside back, and he brings instant energy when he steps on the pitch. Meyer has started 16 matches among his 36 career appearances, and last year he picked up three assists on re-starts, all finished by Alli. Grad won a Patriot League Rookie of the Week Award last season after picking up a goal and an assist in a 3-2 win over Navy. Freshman Mark Figgie is also battling for playing time.

Senior co-captain Josh Plump is going to be count-ed on for goal-scoring up top. Plump is a speed-burner with 10 career goals, and he will certainly be a target this year. Hard-working sophomore Pat Plourde gives the Bison a size presence at 6’1”, 205 pounds. Sopho-more Conor Keeley is a smart player who is adept at finding pockets in the defense. Freshman Jesse Klug is a pure finisher who came out of the Seattle Sounders’ Academy program. Klug was set back by an illness early in camp, but by the end of preseason Nash was raving about his ability to put the ball in the net. The majority of Bucknell’s goals came from set pieces last year, and this group is determined to finish better from the run of play.

“We are very deep up top,” said Nash. “We can play guys to meet our opponents’ weaknesses. Depth is go-ing to be very important all over the field. We want to keep the intensity high for 90 minutes. Our theme is ‘work.’ We play a very competitive schedule and we have the talent to get back to where we want to be, but talent is nothing without hard work.”

HISTORY

Craig Reynolds: Craig Reynolds arrived in Lewisburg in 1967 and would go on to spend 38 years as a coach and administrator at Bucknell. He coached the Bison men’s soccer, tennis and track and field teams during that time. His 238-212-36 soccer record makes him the winningest coach in program history. His best stretch came from 1974-76, when his teams posted three straight 10-win seasons and went to the NCAA Tournament each year.

Dick Roush (‘51): Roush earned three varsity letters each in baseball and soccer, and he was considered one of Bucknell’s best multi-sport athletes in his era. He was a fullback in soccer and captained the team his senior year. In 1948 he helped lead the squad to a Middle Atlantic Conference title. Entered the Hall of Fame in 2012.

Bruce Strasburg (’75): A four-year letterwinner, Strasburg was selected to the All-Middle Atlantic Conference team in 1973 and 1974 and led the Bison in scoring three of his four years. Entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 1998.

Gary Toubman (’76): A team captain as a senior, Toubman was a four-year letterman and two-time All-East Coast Conference selection. He was a defensive catalyst on teams that three times set or tied the school record for shutouts and made back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances. Entered the Hall of Fame with the Class of 2004.

2009

The Bison men’s soccer team has captured three of the last six Patriot League championships, winning titles in 2006, 2009 and 2010. Bucknell became only the fourth team in Patriot League history to repeat as champion, and the Bison are just the second PL team to win three titles in a five-year span.

In the 2006 Patriot League Tournament, fourth-seeded Bucknell won twice in penalty kicks. Buoyed by red-hot goalkeeper Joey Kuterbach, the Bison defeated 14th-ranked Lehigh in the semifinals and Lafayette in the championship. Bucknell was the No. 1 seed in 2009, and playing at Em-mitt Field knocked off Lafayette (on Conor O’Brien’s overtime goal) and American. In 2010 the Bison again won as the No. 4 seed, this time picking off Colgate and American without conceding a goal.

Bucknell advanced to the NCAA Tournament after each of those Patriot League championships, and in 2006 and 2009 the Bison won first-round games, beating George Mason and Princeton, respectively. The George Mason win was Bucknell’s first NCAA victory since 1974.

Bucknell University alumni ranked No. 4 among liberal arts college graduates and among the highest for all colleges and universities in a 2011 PayScale College Salary Report released this summer. The annual survey, which launched in 2008, assesses median starting and mid-career salaries among graduates of top U.S. liberal arts colleges. This year, alumni from 1,003 schools participated.

In this year’s report, Bucknell alumni had a median starting salary of $52,600 and a median mid-career salary of $108,000. The salary report also ranked Bucknell as 14th among all “top U.S. colleges,” including Ivy League and state universities, for mid-career earning potential.

Bucknell alumni historically have had high job placement rates in their first year after graduation. Nine months after graduation, for instance, 84 percent of the members of the Class of 2010 were either employed or enrolled in graduate or professional school, according to Bucknell’s Career Development Center. A small percentage opted to travel, volunteer or do a combination of both.

National ReputationA number of recent reports have served to underscore Bucknell’s

national reputation: • In 2007, The Washington Monthly ranked Bucknell No. 7 among the

best liberal arts colleges in the country when it comes to fostering research and promoting an ethic of service and social mobility.

• In 2010, the Peace Corps listed Bucknell at No. 6 on its top 25 list of small colleges and universities producing Peace Corps Volunteers.

• In February 2010, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine rated Buck-nell as the 11th best value in private liberal arts colleges.

The 2007 game between Bucknell and Lehigh and the 2009 contest be-tween the Bison and Lafayette were televised on Fox Soccer Channel. There were the first na-tional television broadcasts to originate from Bucknell’s Emmitt Field at Holmes Stadium. The Bison won both games, topping Lehigh 3-1 in 2007 and Lafayette 1-0 in 2009.
