The mission of the Urban League movement is to enable African Americans to secure economic self-reliance, parity, power and civil rights.

The Urban League employs a five point strategy, tailored to local needs, in order to implement the mission of our movement.

» EDUCATION AND YOUTH EMPOWERMENT: Ensuring that all of our children are well educated and prepared for economic self-reli-ance in the 21st century through college scholarships, early child-hood literacy, Head Start and after care programs.

» ECONOMIC EMPOWERMENT: Empowering all people in attaining economic self-sufficiency through job training, good jobs, home-ownership, entrepreneurship and wealth accumulation.

» HEALTH AND QUALITY OF LIFE EMPOWERMENT: Working to build healthy and safe communities to eliminate health disparities through prevention, healthy eating, fitness, as well as ensuring access and complete access to affordable healthcare for all people.

» CIVIC ENGAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP EMPOWERMENT: Empowering all people to take an active role in determining the direction, qual-ity of life, public policy and leadership in their communities by full participation as citizens and voters, as well as through active community service and leadership development.

» CIVIL RIGHTS AND RACIAL JUSTICE EMPOWERMENT: Promoting and ensuring our civil rights by actively working to eradicate all bar-riers to equal participation in the all aspects of American society, whether political, economic, social, educational or cultural.

June 2012 Welcome back to Orlando! We extend warm greetings to treasured old friends and welcome the new supporters who are joining us to celebrate the 43th anniversary of the National Urban League’s Black Executive Exchange Program (BEEP). This program, with its rich history, is proud to return to Florida this year for our annual conference with the theme “Leadership Development=Empowered for Employment.” The conference agenda is filled with sessions that will help all of us to refine our skills as leaders and to continue to drive the possibilities of success for the next generation of employed professionals. Thank you to UPS, Unilever, and Johnson & Johnson for taking the lead to sponsor our gathering, and the 2012 BEEP Leadership Conference Planning Committee for diligently working together to put together three days of compelling, inspiring and relevant content. BEEP continues to be about leadership. And that’s all thanks to you, our supporters, who are the backbone of the program. You are the fulfillment of the BEEP mission -- promoting excellence and preparing our young people to engage in an incredibly challenging, decidedly challenging and evolving workplace. So now, as we gather to celebrate BEEP’s rich history, we look forward to the program’s future, and a future of empowered, prepared leadership. Enjoy the conference! Sincerely, Sonya Holt Chair BEEP Executive Advisory Council Herman L. Lessard, Jr. Senior Vice President, Affiliate Services National Urban League

June  2012    Welcome  to  BEEP  –  a  national  portal  to  success  for  aspiring  students  and  emerging  business  leaders.    Whether  it’s  your  first  BEEP  Conference  or  more  than  you  can  remember,  we  thank  you  for  your  presence  and  commitment  to  this  cause.      As  co-‐chairs  of  the  2012  BEEP  Leadership  Conference,  we  are  excited  about  the  opportunities  that  lie  ahead  for  everyone  here  in  Orlando.    Thanks  to  the  hard  work  of  many  who  have  made  this  conference  possible,  the  stage  is  set  for  participants  to  learn,  network  and  explore  opportunities  for  success.    Now  in  its  43rd  year,  BEEP  continues  its  legacy  as  the  longest-‐running  direct  services  program  of  the  National  Urban  League.    Since  its  inception,  more  than  one  million  students  at  Historically  Black  Colleges  and  Universities  (HBCUs)  have  benefited  from  the  advice,  counsel  and  interaction  with  “BEEPERS”  –  executives  who  represent  a  broad  spectrum  across  Corporate  America.        The  BEEP  Conference  stands  as  a  testament  to  the  concept  of  connecting  and  collaborating.    It  provides  a  perfect  setting  for  students,  faculty,  sponsors  and  BEEPERS  to  learn  new  skills,  forge  lasting  relationships,  and  build  networks  that  can  make  a  positive  impact  on  society.    We  encourage  each  of  you  to  become  fully  engaged  in  the  activities  over  the  next  few  days  to  maximize  your  experience.    Of  course  this  conference  could  not  be  possible  without  the  generous  support  of  our  sponsors,  and  we  tip  our  hats  to  those  in  the  leadership  category  –  Johnson  &  Johnson,  Southwest  Airlines,  Unilever,  and  UPS.        Enjoy  your  time  in  Orlando  and  thank  you  for  all  that  you  do  for  BEEP!    Sincerely,        Robert  Johnson         Alonzo  Byrd        MCDONALDS ENTERPRISE RENT-A-CAR 2012  Conference  Co-‐Chair     2012  Conference  Co-‐Chair

GREETINGS FROM BEEP CENTRAL

June  2012    Dear  BEEP  Family:    To   maintain   anything   consistently   for   43   years   is   an   accomplishment.   To   make   the   type   of  impact  that  BEEP  has  made  over  that  exact  time  period  –  consistently  making  a  difference  in  the  lives  of  the  more  than  1  million  students  who  have  been  reached  on  84  Historically  Black  College  and  University  campuses  by  more  than  2,000  visiting  professors  who  serve  as  mentors   is  more  than  an  accomplishment.  It’s  staggering.  It’s  a  legacy.        This   year,   we   will   commemorate   our   legacy   during   the   43rd   Annual   BEEP   Leadership  Conference,  taking  place  June  6  -‐  9  at  the  Buena  Vista  Palace  Hotel  and  Spa  in  Orlando  Florida.  The  theme  for  this  year’s  summit  is,  “Leadership  Development  -‐  Empowered  for  Employment.”  Over  the  two  and  a  half  days,  we  plan  to  pay  homage  to  the  successes  of  legacies  already  built  and   acknowledge   the   evolutionary   challenges   that   face   our   next   generation   of   leaders   who  forge  to  build  new  ones.    We’re  happy  to  be  back  in  Orlando,  Florida,  one  of  the  cities  of  BEEP’s  origin  and  the  home  state  of  several  of  the  HBCU  partners  who  have  long  been  committed  to  and  embracing  of  the  goals  of   BEEP.     Both   campus   and   business   partners   are   invaluable   partners   in   all   that   we   do.   The  support  of  all  of  our  partners  has  shown  to  be  increasingly  important  because  of  the  jobs  crisis  this   country   is   facing.     We   are   grateful   to   our   long-‐time   partners   like   UPS,   Enterprise   and  McDonalds.    We  are  also  optimistic  that  our  burgeoning  partnerships  with  companies   like  CVS  Caremark;  Boston  Scientific;  Darden,  Hilton  and  Johnson  &  Johnson  will  increase  the  availability  of  BEEPers  for  our  upcoming  fall  semester  and  the  building  of  new  legacies.    At  this  year’s  conference,  returning  for  a  third  year  is  the  highly  successful  Leadership:  BEEP,  a  two-‐day  activity  enriched  institute  that  will  help  students  evaluate  themselves  as  they  develop  their  leadership  skills.    Other  highlights  of  this  year’s  conference  include  the  13th  Annual  Jerome  E.   Bartow   Golf   Tournament,   sponsored   by   UPS,   along   with   various   workshops   and   plenary  sessions  that  focus  squarely  on  leadership  and  empowered  employment.      We   are   thankful   that   you   are   joining   us   during   what   promises   to   be   our   most   powerful,  conference  to-‐date.    As  today’s  and  tomorrow’s  leaders,  we  know  you’ll  be  there  in  full  force  to  both  celebrate  BEEP’s  legacy  and  take  the  steps  necessary  to  leave  new  ones.  As  you  all  show  us  each  day  -‐-‐  and  especially  this  year  -‐-‐  it’s  what  leaders  do.      Yours  in  Leadership,  Tracy,  Carolyn,  Danielle,  Lauren  and  Kim  BEEP  Central

ing to millions of new golfers through structured Player Development programs.

Golf is one of the most powerful business development and career advancing

tools, yet many college students and working professionals alike fail to recognize

the value. Golf in the business and professional world can help to level the play-

ing field, advance one’s career, develop new business, maintain existing business,

create lasting relationships, and strengthen existing relationships.

All of these can dramatically improve a students’ outlook on the bottom line.

Facilitated by PGA Professional Anthony G. Stepney, the seminar will show

students how to use golf as a tool for success including navigate a business golf

outing, the tools for looking the part, how to govern ones’ self on and around a

golf course, and what to expect from others. The students will learn how to deal

with the “embarrassment factor”, enjoy the day, and feel included without being

» Marcia Johnson-Blanco, Co-director, Voting Rights Project Lawyers’

Committee for Civil Rights Under Law

Description: The National Urban League’s 2012 “State of Black America” report

took a sharp and decisive turn in this very important election year with a head-

line to “Occupy the Vote.” According to National Urban League President and

CEO, Marc H. Morial, African- Americans must not only become aware of what

he and others are calling a national assault on voting rights and arm themselves

with the information needed to ensure they’re not turned away from the polls,

they’ve also got to use their vote to help determine what kind of future they’re

going to have.

This panel session will provide participants with a tailored perspective on how

specifically this year’s election is about everything in their futures and how

the NUL’s 8-point education and employment plan is critical to building an

“Empowered for Employment” future.

» Demetria Sloan, District Manager at Eisai, Inc.

Description: In an ever changing business world where the boundaries seem

to be blurred and news reports abound of the latest arrest of someone involved

in fraudulent fiscal activity, the importance of ethics must be top of mind.

Employees are asked to “be creative” and move things forward when none of the

known tried and true methods or rules seem to apply.

Participants in this session will be broken down in to groups of 10 (groups to be

comprised of students and executives) and exposed to interactive role play and

case studies which will challenge them to make effective decisions and then

» Robert Johnson, Managing Counsel, McDonald’s Corporation and

BEEP Executive Advisory Council Member

Description: Have you ever heard of or been invited to a speed dating event? If

you have you’ll understand the concept of speed networking.

At a speed dating event you get to meet a lot of people in a very short space of

time and the idea is that first impressions count. If you hit it off with someone

and feel that you have things in common, then you can meet up again later and

take more time to build a relationship.

Speed networking at this BEEP conference is the business equivalent of just

that. Participants will be placed in small groups (5-7 students/group) and

given a set period of time (5 to 7 minutes) to make initial contact with busi-

ness executives; just enough time to exchange basic information and make an

intriguing first impression.

Where: Buena Vista Palace Hotel and Spa (Great Hall East)

SPEAKER: Linda Clemmons, CEO, Sisterpreneur Inc.

Description: Over 50% of our communication is non-verbal. In our primitive

history prior to the spoken word we communicated with gestures, grunts and

sounds. The way you walk, sit and stand reveals more than you think. Deception

and inconsistencies can be detected through body language as well as hidden

messages. The focus of this session is to make you more aware of your own non-

verbal cues and signals while learning how to communicate more powerfully and

effectively to get the results and reactions you want.

BEEP 2012 ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The National Urban League’s Black Executive Exchange Program is grateful to all of our investors for their invaluable financial support of the 43rd Anniversary BEEP Leadership Conference, “Leadership Development = Empowered for Employment” with a very special thank you to our Leadership Sponsors – Johnson and Johnson, Unilever and UPS.

We extend our deepest thanks and appreciation to the BEEP Executive Advisory Council for their steadfast commitment, devotion, time, energy, inspiration and for being part of the solu-tion. A standing ovation for our Conference Co-Chairs, Alonzo Byrd, Enterprise Holdings and Robert Johnson, McDonald’s, and the conference planning committee, for their hard work and leadership.

Special thanks are extended to our speakers, presiders, moderators and facilitators who trav-eled across the country to share their invaluable insights, knowledge and experience with our conferees. Applause, applause for our host affiliate, the Central Florida Urban League, their President and CEO, Allie Braswell and his team – Shellie-Ann Minnis, Anthony Stepney and Leonard Spencer, without whom, this conference would not be a success.

And a resounding thanks to Visit Orlando Convention and Visitors Bureau’s Collette Johnson, Jennifer Targhetta and Michelle Molz, and the Buena Vista Palace Hotel and Spa staff, espe-cially John Durkee, Sofia Morris and Robert Feigel for making our staff and attendees feel welcomed.

It is because of the efforts of others that we are able to celebrate our 43rd anniversary and to that end, we salute our President and CEO, Marc H. Morial and Herman Lessard, Senior Vice President, Affiliate Services for their leadership and National Urban League colleagues for their ongoing support, Chanelle Hardy, Wanda Jackson, Nicole Lazarre, Dennis Serrette, Paul Wycisk, Michael Thompson, Donna Stewart, Michelle Smith, Amber Jaymes, Lynn Law, Renee Jenkins, Yeymi Hoffman, Maria McFarlane, Kenyatta Skyles, Lillian Coakley, Dorothy Millines, Isiah Hall, Everton Patrick Burke, Dale Johnson, Zuhirah Khaldun, Colin Allum, Fred Evans, Sharon Harris, Jacqueline Hamilton, Belinda Samuels, and our BEEP Intern Rebekah Severe.

Yours in the Movement,

BEEP CENTRALTracy Boleware, Carolyn Ellison, Danielle Cornwall, Kim Weaver & Lauren Lamin

ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP

The Jerry Bartow Scholarship Fund was established in June 1997 by ITT Hartford Insurance Company in recognition of Dr. Bartow’s service to ITT, his long-standing commit-ment to the development of the Black Executive Exchange Program and the National Urban League. Undergraduate students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities who have a minimum 3.0 GPA out of 4.0 are eligible to apply for the scholarship. The scholarship fund is maintained through personal and corporate contributions as well as the Jerome E. Bartow Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament, organized annually by UPS.

A $5,000 scholarship is awarded to three (3) deserving stu-dents of BEEP participating HBCUs.

Awardees must be classified as a sophomore, junior or senior at the time the scholarship commences.

Awardees must be available to receive the award during the Black Executive Exchange Program’s Annual Leadership Conference which is typically held in June. Travel and hotel arrangements will be provided by BEEP.

The logistics of providing opportunities. Throughout its history, The UPS Foundation has helped students access higher education to achieve their dreams and build strong futures for themselves.
