Blue Raiders in February MT posted a 5-3 mark this season in February. Dating back to Peterson’s first season, the Middle Tennessee baseball team holds a 66-64-2 record in games played in the month of Febru-ary. In home meetings, the mark improves to 36-23. The Blue Raiders are 29-41-2 on the road.

Middle Tennessee on March 9, 10 and 11 Since 1988, the Blue Raiders hold a 10-8 record on March 9, including a 6-4 mark within the friendly confines of Reese Smith Jr. Field. Middle Tennessee has won three in a row on the date, including a 9-4 victory at Kentucky last season. On March 10, the Blue Raiders boast of an 8-6 record with four wins in six chances at home. Prior to an 8-6 loss to Tennes-see in 2010, MT had won three home games in a row on the date. MT also holds a winning record on March 11 with six wins to five losses, and a 5-2 mark at home. Sunday will mark the first time the Blue Raiders have played on the date since an 8-3 home victory over Lipscomb in 2009.

Pitching key early With the exception of the Kansas game, Middle Tennessee has held every opponent to four runs or less, compiling a Sun Belt-best 2.54 team ERA. Since joining the Sun Belt in 2001, the lowest team ERA for a season came in 2001, when the Dewon Brazelton-led Blue Raiders averaged posted 3.55 earned runs per nine innings.

Sisco leads charge on the mound After a standout prep and juco career, Jonathan Sisco has turned into the Blue Raiders’ most consistent starter through the first month of the season. The junior mowed down the first 11 hitters he faced in his career, and he hasn’t led up as the Murfreesboro native is tops in the Sun Belt in both opponent batting average (.113) and runs allowed (3). He is top five eight separate pitching categories, including the third best ERA in the league at 1.35

Middle Tennessee vs. Ball State Under the direction of Steve Peterson, the Blue Raiders are 1-1 vs. the Cardinals, and this season marks just the second series that Middle Tennessee has met with the Mid-American Conference foe in school history. The Cardinals and Blue Raiders last played at the start of the 2005 season. After Chase Eakes put together a career 3-for-4 day with a home run to lead MT to an 11-2 victory in the season opener, BSU responded with a 7-4 decision. The rubber game was canceled due to inclement weather. MT is 11-4 against foes from the Mid-American Conference under Steve Peterson, with all 15 games taking place in Murfreesboro. The Blue Raiders swept Ohio earlier this season and have won eight of the last nine against the league, dating back to the 2008 season.

Blue Raiders knock off Vols It was a night to remember earlier last week in Knoxville, as Middle Tennessee accomplished something they hadn’t done since 1994, beat Tennessee on the road. The Blue Raiders rode strong pitching and clutch hitting to pick up a 5-4 decision in 10 innings for their fourth win in a row. After coming back from an early deficit to take a 4-2 lead, the previously un-beaten Vols picked up a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth to bring things even at 4-4. Johnny Thomas led off the 10th frame with a double, and Ryan Stephens, who was less than two years old the last time MT won in Knoxville, singled to center to hand the Blue Raiders the lead. Daniel Palo struck out the side to seal the deal in the bottom half of the frame.

Adkins named SBC Pitcher of the Week After tossing a complete game shutout against Ohio on February 24, junior Hunter Adkins became the first Sun Belt honoree of the season for the Blue Raiders, taking home his second career Pitcher of the Week award. The junior was the only MT player to receive the recognition last year, earning it after throwing eight score-less frames against Troy last May.

More on that shutout... Adkins is one of just two Blue Raiders on the roster toss a complete game shut-out, joining Matthew Drake, who pitched a rain-shortened five inning one-hitter at Memphis last season. Adkins is the first to throw nine scoreless in a game since both Chad Edwards and Kenneth Roberts accomplished the feat towards in May of the 2010 season. Edwards shutout Louisiana in the SBC Tournament and Roberts closed down former Sun Belt member New Orleans. Both games were played at Reese Smith Jr. Field. Adkins had come close to a complete game shutout on a couple occasions last season. Against then-18th-ranked Troy, the righthander threw eight scoreless to help MT to a 1-0 victory, and in the last series of the season against Western Ken-tucky, he allowed just one run while picking up a complete game victory thanks to a walk-off grand slam by former Blue Raider Will Skinner.

Frebis and Sisco dominate in early showings Johnathan Frebis opened some eyes on against Saint Louis. Making his collegiate debut, Frebis pitched five scoreless innings before walking off the mound with a 1-0 lead. Dating back to 2001, MT’s first year in the Sun Belt, Frebis is the only player to pitch at least five frames without allowing a run in his first career appearance. Frebis’ individual glory was short-lived however as junior Jonathan Sisco bettered the outing just a few days later in his own collegiate debut at Lipscomb, also going five innings without allowing a run. The Murfreesboro native struck out five and retired the first 11 batters he faced in order. Sisco also left the mound with a 1-0 lead, but MT ultimately fell to the Bisons 3-1.

Seeing double The Middle Tennessee infield has been adept at turning dou-ble plays over the years, leading the conference in the statistic in each of the past three seasons. After helping the Blue Raiders turn 64 double plays in 2011, MT returns regular starters from a year ago in second baseman Johnny Thomas, shortstop Ryan Ford and third baseman Hank LaRue. This season, Middle Tennessee has turned 13 double plays through 13 games, ranking first in the SBC

Gunning for state supremacy The Blue Raiders will play 12 games vs. in-state foes this sea-son. This is not new territory for MT as the school has played at least 12 games vs. Tennessee foes each year under the direction of head coach Steve Peterson. This season, MT is 1-2 vs. state foes with a win against Tennessee last week. Since Peterson took control of the program in 1988, MT holds an overall 248-162-1 mark vs. colleges in Tennessee and a 133-64 record in Murfreesboro. The Blue Raiders hold ster-ling 19-0 and 6-0 marks against Tennessee State and Trevecca, respectively. The Blue Raiders have posted the most victories against former conference rivals Austin Peay (44) and Tennes-see Tech (41).

Hank LaRue and Justin Guidry named to All-Preseason Team, Blue Raiders picked eighth For the third time in school history, multiple Middle Tennes-see players were selected to the All-Sun Belt Preseason Team. Hank LaRue, earned Second Team honors last season, and became the first Blue Raider sophomore since Bryce Brentz to place on the preseason squad. Senior Justin Guidry, a former All-SBC First Team selection, was tabbed to the preseason team as well. As a team, the Blue Raiders were picked to finish eighth in the Sun Belt preseason coaches poll. The last time the Blue Raiders were picked eighth was 2009, which saw MT post a 44-18 season en route to a Sun Belt Championship. The Blue and White also had two preseason honorees in 2009 in then-sophomore Brentz and then-senior Nathan Hines.

Middle Tennessee in extra innings With a 10th inning win over Tennessee last week, Middle Tennessee moved to a perfect 2-0 record this season in extra innings games. The 3-2 victory over Saint Louis marked the first extra innings victory since a 21-20 win over Lipscomb in 2010. The last time MT won consecutive extra inning games came in 2009 with victories at Belmont and against Arkansas State.

Blue Raiders in doubleheaders Middle Tennessee is 206-112 all-time in doubleheaders since Steve Peterson took control of the program in 1988. The most twinbill victories for a Blue Raider team is 20, set back in the 2000 season, and the best win percentage came in 1990, when the Blue and White ran up an 11-1 mark.

No place like home Middle Tennessee will play 32 games at Reese Smith Jr. Field this year after playing 29 at home last season. The record for home wins was set in 2009 after posting a 27-4 record. Since Peterson took over in 1988, the Blue Raiders hold an overall re-cord of 426-245 in home contests in Murfreesboro. This season, Middle Tennessee is 6-2.

Local flavor The 2011 Blue Raiders boast of three players from Murfrees-boro, and a remarkable 26 of the 34 players hail from the state of Tennessee. Of the the Murfreesboro athletes, two hail from Riverdale HS (Ryan Stephens, Johnathan Frebis) and one is from Blackman HS (Jonathan Sisco).

MIDDLE TENNESSEE BASEBALL

There are many words to describe Steve Peterson’s role as Middle Tennessee’s highly successful baseball coach since 1988. Coach, fundraiser, teacher, recruiter, and architect are just a few, but if you are looking for one word to describe the Blue Raiders’ longtime skipper, try “winner.”

Peterson begins his 25th season as the school’s all-time win-ningest coach, with 760 victories and a stockpile of conference championships and NCAA Tournament berths to his credit, demonstrating the consistency with which the driven captain has guided the club.

Peterson’s drive for excellence has resulted in consistent suc-cess and has made Middle Tennessee a model program. The veteran coach has led Middle Tennessee to 11 regular-season conference championships, nine conference tournament titles, and nine NCAA Regional berths including two at-large selections in the past seven years. Peterson guided the Blue Raiders to seven consecutive championships – either regular-season or tournament – during one stretch, proving Middle Tennessee doesn’t rebuild, it reloads. Peterson, who enters the 2012 season with a sterling 760-609-3 mark, has produced 15 seasons with 30 or more wins, including a school-record 44 victories in 2009. He also has four campaigns of at least 40 wins, including 2009’s 44-18 record.

Consistent success during Peterson’s tenure is a testament to his ability to recruit and develop talent, and the proof was never more evident than in 2001 – the Blue Raiders’ first season in the Sun Belt Conference after years of success in the Ohio Valley.

Asked how the move into the Sun Belt, rated one of the na-tion’s top five baseball leagues at the time and consistently a

top 10 conference, would change his re-cruiting philosophy, Pe-terson quickly respond-ed “Not at all.” The 2001 Blue Raiders shared the Sun Belt championship with South Alabama af-ter their first year in the high-profile league, and the chief contributors were many of the same players who led Middle Tennessee to the 2000 OVC championship.

The move to a higher-rated conference certainly helped Middle Tennessee’s status. In their first five years in the Sun Belt, Peterson’s teams won two regular-season championships and a tournament champi-onship and earned three NCAA Regional berths including two at-large selections for the first time in school history.

The 2001 squad earned national acclaim for its pitching and hitting and the season concluded with pitcher Dewon Brazel-ton being selected as the No. 3 overall pick of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in the Major League Baseball First-Year Amateur Player Draft. Brazelton was one of six players from the team to earn a spot on a professional baseball roster that season.

A program cannot enjoy consistent success without quality players and Peterson, a three-time Coach of the Year, has not only made a habit of making sure Middle Tennessee has its share of quality performers but he’s also won by signing top prep players and developing them at the college level. He has coached a Sun Belt Player of the Year and six OVC Players of the Year, a Sun Belt Pitcher of the Year and an OVC Pitcher of the Year, two First-Team All-Americans, five Third-Team All-Americans, four Freshman All-Americans, and 43 first-team All-Conference performers.

Players who have honed their skills under Peterson also have had outstanding success continuing their careers at the pro-fessional level. Professional baseball has seen 56 former Peter-son performers earning the chance to play at the game’s high-est level, with four making their way to the Major Leagues.

Peterson’s recruits have established most of the offensive records held at Middle Tennessee and seven players he has developed have hit .400 or better in a season. He has also coached the school’s single-season and career home run record holders. His 2009 squad established the all-time record for batting average with .340.

Peterson’s players have been solid on the field at the collegiate level and have continued their careers professionally, and a large majority have taken skills and fundamentals learned at Middle Tennessee and are earning a living as coaches at vari-ous levels. Thirty-one former Blue Raiders are currently coach-ing at the high school, college, or professional levels.

Peterson’s peers have recognized his achievements and con-tributions to the game by bestowing several honors on him. He was named the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association College Coach of the Year in 1992, 2000 and 2009. Peterson received his first ABCA Region Coach of the Year honor in 2009 after guiding the Blue Raiders in their record breaking season. He was also inducted into the Rutherford County Old Timers Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003. In 2007, Peterson was inducted into the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the Huntsville-Madison County (AL) Athletic Hall of Fame in April of 2009. In the fall of 2010, Peterson was inducted into the Blue Raider Hall of Fame by Middle Tennessee State University.

Fellow coaches have named Peterson Coach of the Year on three occasions – twice in the Ohio Valley and again in 2004, his first such honor in the Sun Belt. Peterson’s outgoing and personable style has made him a hit with fans, boosters, play-ers, and recruits alike. Baseball enthusiasts throughout the Middle Tennessee community clearly appreciate his hard-nosed and aggressive style of coaching, and fans continue to flock to Reese Smith Field at a record pace.

The Blue Raiders established a single-game attendance record in 2001 at Reese Smith Field with a crowd of 2,733 against South Alabama. The team went on to set the single-season

attendance mark that year with 26,218 coming through the gates. The 2001 squad saw 15 crowds of 1,000 or more during the season. Those numbers were surpassed in 2004 when the team set a single-game attendance record of 3,020 against Vanderbilt and set a new single-season attendance mark of 30,319, ranking 46th nationally. Fifteen contests drew more than 1,000 patrons during the record-setting campaign.

Not only has Peterson been a winner on the field but he’s also been a successful fundraiser during his career. Events such as the annual Chuck Taylor Golf Tournament, the Groundhog Day Luncheon, and the Grand Slam Fish Fry in the fall have become mainstays on calendars of Blue Raider baseball sup-porters across middle Tennessee and have raised thousands of dollars for the improvement of Blue Raider baseball.

Peterson spearheaded the efforts to pay for the construction of the Stephen B. Smith Clubhouse and Indoor Training Facil-ity, which opened its doors in 1998. One look inside the facility shows the time and effort spent toward this endeavor. It has become known as one of the finest collegiate clubhouses and training facilities in the country.

Reese Smith Jr. Field has also benefited from Peterson’s fundraising abilities. He has helped transform the park into a fan-friendly area by leading efforts to expand the seating area, add an information center just inside the gate, and improve restroom and concession facilities.

Peterson guided efforts during the summer of 2001 to enlarge the dugouts at Reese Smith Field. He also spearheaded a capital campaign to do significant remodeling of the conces-sion stand, improve and expand restroom facilities, and added a modern press box to accommodate radio, television, and print media. While Peterson has spent 23 seasons leading the Middle Tennessee baseball program, his tenure with the program is much longer. He took two separate tours with the Blue Raiders as an assistant coach under John Stanford before becoming the team’s head coach. During 1976-78 and 1985-87, he helped the Blue Raiders win two OVC titles and four Southern Division crowns.

During the interim, Peterson served as head coach at Roane State Community College in Harriman, Tenn. During his tenure from 1979 to 1984, Peterson’s teams won a Tennessee state title in 1981, and he was twice named TJCAA Coach of the Year (1981, ’84). While at Roane State, Peterson put together a sparkling record of 153-96 for a .614 winning percentage.

A native of Huntsville, Ala., Peterson stood out as a catcher under the legendary Rudy Abbott at Jacksonville State. He earned his bachelor’s from Jacksonville State in 1973 and later earned a master’s from Middle Tennessee in 1977.

Peterson is married to the former Rita Albert and the couple has three children, Jill, Jenny, and John, and four grandchil-dren. Away from the diamond, Peterson enjoys fishing for smallmouth bass.
