It gives me great pleasure to introduce the ninth edition of the AyrshireGolf Association Yearbook in my second year as President of theAssociation.2011 was undoubtedly a busy and successful year for Ayrshire playersand Clubs and, once again, we had the satisfaction of seeing our finecourses recognised with the staging of national events. Prestwick andPrestwick St Nicholas proved testing venues for the Scottish Area TeamChampionships in May as gales lashed the Ayrshire coast for the wholeweekend. Although there was no Ayrshire success this time around, theScottish Amateur Championship, held at a sun kissed Western Gailes, was a huge success with the talented David Law claiming the title forthe second time. Wind was also a feature of the Scottish Senior’s OpenStrokeplay Championship at Irvine that saw the title head south of the

border despite a strong Ayrshire challenge.Looking forward, 2012 will again be an interesting and exciting time for Ayrshire golf with our topcourses hosting a number of major events. Top of the list is the Senior Open Championship, whichwill return to Turnberry in July, continuing the resort’s close links with the prestigious Championshipthat began with the inaugural staging in 1987. On the amateur circuit, the season will kick off in Junewith the Scottish Open Strokeplay Championship being hosted by Kilmarnock (Barassie). June willalso see the Amateur Championship return to Royal Troon, which will co-host with Glasgow Gailes. In July the Scottish Senior’s Matchplay Championship will head for West Kilbride with the HomeInternationals being held at Glasgow Gailes in August. An exciting summer will conclude with theDuke of York Young Champions event being held at Royal Troon in September.2011 was a hugely frustrating year for our County Teams. The senior squad kicked off the season bytaking the bronze medal in the Scottish Area Team Championship at a windswept Prestwick but acouple of narrow away defeats in the West of Scotland League meant another disappointingconclusion to that campaign. The youth squad produced some fine performances in their West Leaguechallenge but agonisingly lost out on tie difference for the title. Sadly, the greatest frustration wasfelt by the Under 18 squad who began their 2012 campaign by coming a close second to Lothians inthe Scottish Area Team Championship at Hayston and, despite being undefeated over the five matchseries, went on to suffer the heartache of losing out on the West League title on the last day. This year’s new format in the Ayrshire Summer Leagues proved highly successful with Troon Welbecktaking the Division 1 title, edging out holders Kilmarnock (Barassie) in a dramatic conclusion.Ballochmyle took the honours in Division 2 with Prestwick St Cuthbert and Prestwick St Nicholascoming out tops in Divisions 3 and 4 respectively. Girvan were the outstanding team in League 5 and, together with the other Champions, will play their golf in a higher league next season. 2011 alsosaw new Fourball Champions with the Kilbirnie duo of Barry O'Rourke and Robert Nairn defeating BertPayne & Kevin McCormack of Ardeer in the Final.

Ballochmyle won the Ayrshire Team Championship at Ballochmyle and went on to win the ScottishClub Championship at Falkirk Tryst for the first time. A superb individual effort from Craig Hamiltonbacked up by fine performances by Graeme Rowan and William Fleming sealed their victory andsecured a place in the European final in Antalya, Turkey. Moving on to individual performances, if 2010 was memorable for the achievements of TroonWelbeck’s Michael Stewart then 2011 was even more so. Michael kicked off his season with afantastic victory in the South African Amateur Championship only to be denied a famous doublewhen he narrowly lost out in the final of the British Amateur Championship at Hillside. Despite someniggling injury worries, Michael’s outstanding achievements over the last two seasons saw him securea place in the Walker Cup team to face an impressive American line up at Royal Aberdeen inSeptember. His performance throughout two, pressure packed, days was top class. Amid many memorablemoments, those who witnessed a quite brilliant pitch from the side of the 17th green to secure acrucial first day foursomes victory in the company of Tom Lewis, will not forget it in a hurry. Thatwin, in the top foursomes match on the first morning, set the tone for the GB&I side who went on torecord a 14 – 12 victory, their first since 2003. Michael, whose achievements have earned him the2011 Scottish Amateur Golfer of the Year award, has since moved into the professional ranks togetherwith Jamie Mackay and we wish them both the very best of luck for the future. At County level, Scott Brown (Turnberry) became the new Ayrshire Champion Of Champions after anarrow victory over defending champion Tommy McInally (Loudoun) and Jamie Mackay (KilmarnockBarassie) won the Ayrshire Strokeplay Championship for the first time, after a play off against MichaelSmyth (Royal Troon). Not to be outdone, Michael carried his good form into the Ayrshire MatchplayChampionship where he defeated Girvan’s Gary Bryden in the final. Further fine performancesthroughout an excellent season saw Michael deservedly secure the 2011 Doc Thom Ayrshire OrderOf Merit title.Ayrshire further extended its proud list of national champions in 2011 when Troon Welbeck’s DavidWilson became the Scottish Boy’s Champion after a quite remarkable comeback in the final againstLiam Johnston (Dumfries and County). David continued his fine form throughout the season andwon the Ayrshire Junior Order Of Merit and the McRobert Thistle Player of the Year award, earninghimself a deserved place in Scottish Boys Squad for 2012 together with Euan Walker (KilmarnockBarassie). On the international scene, Ayrshire was again well represented at all levels of the game. MichaelStewart’s contribution to the national team needs no further explanation and Kilmarnock (Barassie)’sJack McDonald continued his development at international level with another fine season in the Under18 Team. The Under 16 Team contained the ever-present Euan Walker who was joined by his clubmate Callum Gorrie, both of Kilmarnock (Barassie). David Wilson also joined Euan in the ScotlandSchools team, which faced England in September.

Page 6: 2012 Ayrshire Golf Association Yearbook

On the Senior front, ‘yours truly’ was selected for the Scotland Senior’s Team for the HomeInternationals at Woodhall Spa with my club mate Alex Glennie chosen for the ladies equivalent atTramore. Alasdair Berry of Irvine Ravenspark completed the line up by being selected for the Scotlandteam that contested the Disabled World Team Championship at Westerwood G.C. Alasdair was alsoselected for the United Kingdom side, which competed in the World Handigolf Championships inSweden. Congratulations to everyone.Off the golf course, I would also like to pass on my warmest congratulations to Iain Harvey(Kilmarnock Barassie) who in 2011 was elected Junior Vice President of the Scottish Golf Union (SGU)and subsequently confirmed as Vice President at the recent SGU AGM. Iain has served in variouscapacities at club and county level over the past 30 years and has been a member of the Ayrshire GolfAssociation Executive for over 20 years, serving as President from 1996 to 1998. Another off course issue, currently ongoing, is the proposed amalgamation between the SGU and theScottish Ladies Golf Association (SLGA). Although the SLGA voted to accept the proposals, the men’sAreas voted against and the process stalled. I’m pleased to say that a great deal of productive workhas been going on in an effort to find consensus amongst the Areas and I remain hopeful thatamalgamation can still go ahead at some point in the near future. Sadly, amongst much good news there is also some sad news and 2011 will be remembered for thepassing of two great men of Ayrshire golf, Jack Cannon and Innes McQueen. Both these gentlemenwill be sadly missed. In conclusion, I would like to say a huge thank you to my colleagues on the Executive for their hardwork and support throughout the last year. Their contribution, in support of myself and all golfersthroughout Ayrshire, has been outstanding. I would also like to take this opportunity to sincerelythank all of those Clubs who gave up their facilities to allow us to stage our Championships and Teammatches throughout the year. That support is also greatly appreciated.

John Nordbo took over the coaching and development portfolio in 2011 and thecoaching programme within the county has been further developed over the year. The club coaching grant scheme was continued in 2011 with a number of clubs withjunior members using the scheme to augment their own in club coachingarrangements. The change in emphasis to winter coaching was further developed in 2011, with themain development being the establishment of the Ayrshire Coaching Academy todevelop the county Under 18 squad further, on similar lines to the nationalprogramme.

John also serves as the Ayrshire Golf Association Child & Adult Protection Officer, a role he willcontinue in in 2012 as well as remaining in his coaching and player development post, with a fullreview of all aspects of the coaching programme being undertaken during the year.

Robert Wilson enjoyed a successful first season administering the youth team, finishing a close second in the West Of Scotland Youth League with only one defeatin five matches. Robert will continue as youth team manager in 2012, assisted byDougie Dempster and new Executive member Mike Hazlewood.

In a successful first season managing the boys team, Cliff Francisand John Duncan almost captured the West Of Scotland under 18title. Needing a win away from home to take the title from theirhosts, Dumbartonshire, the team fought to an agonising 4 – 4draw to narrowly lose out on the title. Added to a near miss in theScottish Boys Area Team Championship, the season was a case ofwhat might have been. John and Cliff will continue to administerthe boys team in 2012, with the assistance of John Nordbo andDougie Dempster, as they strive to build on the success of 2011.

Ricky Magee, assisted by Allan Muir, continued to administer theA Team in 2011. Despite some disappointing narrow defeats inthe West Of Scotland leagues, the team did enjoy success on thenational stage with third place in the Scottish Area TeamChampionships in May. Ricky will continue as A team manager in2012, with assistance from Allan Muir and new Executive memberJohn Rushbury.

Our thanks must also be recorded for the efforts of our coaching professionals, Graham Ross(Inverclyde), Richard Gordon (Ayr Belleisle) and David Fleming (Prestwick), who continue to worktogether in the development of the county coaching strategy.

A Past Captain of Troon Welbeck Golf Club, Innes was involved in the AyrshireGolf Association in a number of capacities, culminating in his term as CountyPresident from 1985 to 1987.

It was in the year that he took over as County President that Innes had thesatisfaction of seeing his younger son, Andrew, win the Scottish BoysChampionship on the final green at Dunbar when he defeated clubmate FraserMcCulloch in what still remains the only occassion in which two clubmates havemet in the final of the Scottish Boys since the championship began in 1935.

In recent years, Innes was able to follow the fortunes of another talented family member, his granddaughter Rachel, who won the Ayrshire Ladies County Championship for the first time in 2011 andhas recently embarked on a golf scholarship in the United States Of America.

Although he was no longer involved in golf administration, Innes retained a keen interest in all thatwas going on in Ayrshire golf until his untimely passing.

Jamie Mackay (Kilmarnock Barassie) won the Ayrshire Strokeplay Championship for the firsttime, after a marathon play off against Michael Smyth (Royal Troon), when the 2011championship took place at West Kilbride Golf Club on Sunday 24th April.A capacity field of 60 players contested the 36 hole event, with the cut being set at an alltime low of 1.9 of a handicap.Mackay, the 2005 Ayrshire Boys Champion, led the field from the off, posting the best scoreof the morning round with a three under par 68. 2010 Scottish Mid Amateur Champion Craig Hamilton (Ballochmyle) trailed by only oneshot at the halfway stage whilst four other players also posted morning scores under par to

trail the leader by two. After a 72 in the morning, Michael Smyth recorded one of the best rounds of the afternoon with a two under par69 to set the clubhouse target on 141, one under par, for 36 holes.Jamie Mackay was in the group following Smyth and, although he couldn't quite match his morning form, his twoover par score of 73 in the afternoon was enough to match the leading score. With no other challengers emerging, the winner of the title was to be decided by a four hole play off over the 1st,16th, 17th and 18th holes between Mackay and Smyth.Smyth took the early lead after Mackay three putted the opening play off hole for a bogey five, and despite bothplayers having opportunities, pars at the 16th and 17th saw the players move to the final tee with Smyth still oneahead.Mackay produced a superb drive to within a few yards of the green at the 18th, and although Smyth secured asolid par four, it was to Mackay's real credit that he chipped up and holed an excellent 10 feet putt for a birdiethree to take the play off into extra holes.Pars from both players at the first sudden death play off hole, saw the players return once more to the 18th holeto do battle for the county crown. At what was to prove the last hole of the contest, Mackay cut his tee shot right, leaving him a difficult approachto the green over a bunker whilst Smyth found a testing lie in the rough just off the right side of the fairway.Mackay hit his approach a little heavy and found a greenside bunker whilst Smyth, despite coming from testingrough, managed to reach the front of the green, leaving him a putt of around 30 feet for his birdie three.Mackay played a good bunker shot to around 10 feet past the hole, leaving him a chance of a par, and then watchedas Smyth's birdie effort pulled up 4 feet short of the hole. The destiny of the title lay with two putts and Mackay took the initiative, striking a firm putt which circled thehole before dropping into the cup for a superb par four from the bunker, under the circumstances. The spotlight fell on Smyth who faced a four foot putt for his par to take the match further. Despite hitting a goodputt which caught the hole, Smyth saw his ball agonisingly horseshoe round the hole and spin out, leaving himwith a closing bogey 5 and giving the title to his opponent Jamie Mackay.

Ballochmyle won the 2011 Ayrshire Club Champions titleover their home course on Sunday 3rd July.In glorious sunny weather, 60 of Ayrshire's best club golfers, representing 20 clubs, competed for the R.L. CrawfordTrophy, with the best two scratch scores from threecounting towards the team total.Playing in the early games, Ballochmyle set an impressivetotal for the other team to challenge. Craig Hamilton ledthe way with what was to prove the best individual score ofthe day, carding a 2 under par 68. Graeme Rowan added aone under par 69 with William Fleming adding a useful 70as the third score, which would be required in the event of a tie.Irvine Ravenspark and Maybole, on 144, got closest of the early starters to the Ballochmyle total, andwhen the Prestwick team, who won the title two years ago and went on to national success, came inthree short of the Ballochmyle score on 141, only Troon Welbeck of the remaining teams had arealistic chance of beating the hosts.Stephen Murray, needing a three under par 67 to add to Marc Smith's 69, was two under par on the11th tee but faltered a little on the inward half. Despite finishing with an impressive birdie four,Murray could only manage a one over par 71, which was enough to secure the runners up berth forthe Troon Welbeck side but ensured that the 2011 title would go to Ballochmyle.Ballochmyle went on to represent Ayrshire in the Scottish Club Championship final at Falkirk Trystin September and won, bringing the national title to Ayrshire for the second time in three years.

Harrington's outward half of

36, one over par, including six pars and a birdie three at the sixth. On the inward stretch, a run of sixsuccessive pars from the 11th contributed to an inward nine of 37, two over par.A total of 87 players contested the championship in 2011, an increase of almost a third on the entryin 2010, as the popularity of the event continues to grow.

17 year old Callum Beveridge of Troon Welbeck who won the Ayrshire BoysChampionship on Thursday 4th August at Prestwick St Nicholas after a play off withdefending champion and club mate Charlie Macneal.Despite testing weather conditions in the morning, there was some excellent scoring, with the outstanding morning rounds belonging to Beveridge and Macneal who bothnegotiated the course in four under par 65.Macneal was out in 33 in the morning, two under par, with birdies at the 3rd, 6th and8th and a bogey five at the difficult 7th hole and came back in two under, with birdiesat the 11th, 13th, 15th and 17th being offset with bogeys at the par three 12th and thepar four 16th.Birdies at the 4th and 9th with a bogey five at the 7th saw Beveridge out in one under

par 34, but with birdies at the 12th, 13th, 15th and 17th and a single bogey at the 14th on the way back, Beveridgematched the defending champion at the halfway stage. With the weather improving in the afternoon and the course in excellent condition, no less than five playersreturned second round scratch scores of level par or better, with the best being a two under par 67 from EuanWalker (Kilmarnock Barassie).Playing two matches in front of Macneal, Beveridge maintained his good form into his afternoon round with aone over par outward nine of 36 being followed by birdies at three of the first four holes on the inward half to setup a closing round of 68, one under par, and an overall total of 133.Despite double bogey sixes at the 1st and 4th in the afternoon, Macneal rallied with birdies at the 6th and 7th tosalvage a two over par total of 37 to the turn. In a flawless inward nine, Macneal had no worse than par and withbirdies at the 11th, 14th and 17th he came home in a superb score of 31 for a scratch 68 and a tie for the leadwith Beveridge.Although there was some notable scoring from some of the remaining competitors, none could seriously challengethe leading scores of Macneal and Beveridge and the championship was decided by the first play off since 2002.With the three hole play off being contested over the first, second and sixteenth holes, the 342 yard, par four, firsthole saw both players safely in the fairway from the tee. Playing first, Beveridge found the green whilst Macnealmissed the target to the left. Whilst Macneal could only manage a bogey five, missing his five foot par attempt,Beveridge holed his 20 foot birdie put to take a two stroke advantage.A brave par putt from eight feet at the second play-off hole maintained Beveridge’s two stroke advantage as theplayers made their way to the sixteenth tee, a difficult 379 yard par four.Whilst Macneal maintained the pressure, hitting an excellent tee shot and setting up a birdie opportunity fromtwenty feet with his approach, Beveridge found a difficult lie in the rough from the tee. Despite the lie, Beveridgeplayed a confident and well executed approach safely to the centre of the green, just outside Macneal's ball.Putting first, Beveridge saw his birdie effort hit the hole and spin out to a couple of inches past the cup for acertain par four. Unable to influence the result at this stage, Macneal completed the formalities by two puttingfor a par four, and a one over par total for the play off holes, before graciously extending warm congratulationsto his successor as Boys Champion, Callum Beveridge.

Scott Brown (Turnberry) won the Ayrshire Champion of Champions Trophy for the first time,on Friday 12th August, beating the defending champion Tommy McInally (Loudoun) at the thirdextra hole of an epic final at Royal Troon.48 players started out at the start of the season in a bid to win the 2011 Champion ofChampions title.Beating his Ayrshire team mate, Brown prevented McInally from completing his second hat trickof wins in the event. Playing from the championship tees which stretched the course to nearly7200 yards, it was Brown who took the early lead with a birdie three at the second hole, but overthe following four holes errors by Brown and steady par golf from McInally saw the defending

champion establish a three hole lead.

Callum Beveridge (Troon Welbeck) became the 2011 Ayrshire Boys MatchplayChampion on Thursday 11th August, when he defeated the defending champion andclub mate David Wilson by 2 & 1 in the final at Prestwick Golf Club.Having won the Ayrshire Boys Championship just one week previously, Beveridgebecame only the third player to win both the strokeplay and matchplay titles in thesame year, after Hugh McKibbin in 1990 and Scott Brown in 2008, whilst also denyingDavid Wilson the unique achievement of three successive titles.Having endured terrible weather conditions in the semi finals on Wednesday, theplayers faced better, if not ideal, conditions in the final with periodic light rain

throughout the match.Wilson took the lead at the third with a birdie four, only to see the match squared again at the fourth when hecould only manage a bogey five.A par three at the Himalayas hole was enough for Wilson to restore his lead but Beveridge levelled the match againat the eighth when Wilson double bogeyed. Beveridge then took the lead for the first time with a par four at theninth hole.A concession at the twelfth hole by Beveridge saw the match all square again but Beveridge restored his lead witha par at the difficult thirteenth and maintained the slim advantage through the fourteenth.Entering Prestwick’s famous closing loop of four holes, which is celebrated as one of the finest closing run of holesin matchplay golf, Beveridge looked likely to extend his lead at the fifteenth but was thwarted when Wilson holeda tricky five foot downhill putt for par to half the hole.Whilst Wilson scrambled a par four at the short sixteenth, Beveridge's tee shot pulled up justshort of the green and he putted up to within a few inches of the hole for a conceded birdiethree to leave him dormie two in the match. At the 391 yard par four Alps hole, the penultimate hole of the course, both players found idealposition from the tee, and both played good second shots which found the putting surfacewithin 20 feet of the hole.Putting first, Wilson's effort for birdie just failed to drop and Beveridge was left with the taskof two putting for the championship. His birdie putt ran just past the hole but finished closeenough to bring a concession from David Wilson and give Callum Beveridge the title with a 2& 1 victory.

Brown won the seventh hole with par to reduce the deficit but McInally restored his three hole advantage with abirdie two at the next hole and maintained his leading margin to the turn.As the players turned for home, McInally began to struggle from the tee and Brown took advantage, winning theeleventh and twelfth with pars and the fourteenth with a birdie to square the match.Brown took the lead for the first time since the second hole when McInally found trouble at the fifteenth and ahalf in par threes at the seventeenth left Brown one up with only the final hole to play, as rain began for the firsttime in the match. At the final hole, with the rain making playing conditions increasingly unpleasant, Brown saw his drive find thebunker on the left that cost Greg Norman the 1989 Open Championship, whilst McInally was safely on the fairway.McInally found the putting surface with his approach but Brown was unable to do so and a three putt compoundedhis error, bringing a concession of the hole and taking the final to extra holes.A half in par fours at the opening two sudden death play off holes brought the players back to the eighteenth teeto continue the battle for the title, as rain made playing conditions increasingly difficult. Both players found rough from the tee but McInally found a very poor lie and could only advance the ball a fewyards with his second shot, whilst Brown found sand for the third time in four holes as his approach drifted intoa greenside bunker. McInally’s approach finished just through the green and he chipped up to within a few feet in four. Under extremepressure, Brown played a superb bunker shot which came to rest just a few feet from the hole and he holed hisputt for a par four to take the title from McInally at the 21st hole of the final. In the semi finals, held at Royal Troon the week previously, Scott Brown beat Ewan McKinnon (Corrie) by 6 & 5whilst Tommy McInally beat Adam Sweeney (Largs Routenburn) by 5 & 4.

43 clubs took part in the 2011 Ayrshire Fourball Championship. Barry O’Rourke and Robert Nairn (Kilbirnie Place) defeated Jim Mitchell & Ian Fisher(Ballochmyle), at Ballochmyle, in the semi final by 2 & 1 to book their place in the final.Kevin McCormack & Bert Payne (Ardeer) won through to the final by beating theirvisitors, Iain & David McDonald (Largs) by 2 & 1 in the other semi final. In a closely contested final at West Kilbride on Sunday 2nd October, it was the KilbirniePlace duo of O'Rourke and Nairn who became the 2011 Ayrshire Fourball Champions, defeating Payne & McCormack of Ardeer at the second extra hole.Despite testing conditions with a strong breeze, the Kilbirnie duo came roaring out of

the traps, with birdies at the opening three holes giving them a three hole lead. The Ardeer pair had proved themselves as doughty fighters in previous rounds and the final proved to be nodifferent when they took the fourth, fifth and seventh holes to square the match.Showing their fighting qualities, O’Rourke and Nairn stemmed the tide, taking the eighth hole to give them aslender lead as the players turned for home. The Kilbirnie team started the inward half as they had started the match, winning the tenth and eleventh holesto restore their three hole advantage and although Payne and McCormack reduced the deficit to two at thefifteenth, Kilbirnie maintained a two hole lead with two to play.Things looked ominous for Ardeer at the seventeenth but McCormack holed a 12 foot birdie effort from off thegreen for a birdie to win the hole and take the match to the last.At the closing hole, both Ardeer players found the green, but with testingthirty foot putts for birdies whilst O’Rourke of Kilbirnie missed the greento the right. Kilbirnie’s Robert Nairn was in the best position after twoshots, lying 18 feet to the right of the hole. With a shot at the final hole, Bert Payne saw his attempt for a nett eaglejust miss the hole and his birdie was conceded. Despite a good effortwhich just edged past, Nairn’s unsuccessful birdie effort saw the matchfinish all square and the players moved to extra holes.

The Scratch (Summer) League, first competed for in 2003, was played under a revised formatin 2011.For the first time, clubs were grouped in league sections, depending on their performances inthe competition over the preceding three seasons, and unlike previous years where sectionwinners progressed to knockout stages, each league section became its own competitionwith promotion and relegation between leagues at the end of the season. Matches were stillplayed on a home and away basis. The new format of the competition attracted increased interest with a record number of 28

clubs entering the leagues although Beith ultimately withdrew from League Division 2 before the competitionbegan and Annanhill withdrew from the same division shortly after the start of the campaign. In Division 1 defending champions Kilmarnock (Barassie), who won the last title under the previous format in2010, topped the division for much of the season. Troon Welbeck however made a late charge, winning their finaltwo games, leaving Kilmarnock (Barassie) needing to avoid defeat in their final home match against Loudoun totake a second successive title, however Loudoun snatched a 3.5 – 2.5 win in the final match to deny Kilmarnock(Barassie) and give the Division 1 title to Troon Welbeck. At the foot of the table, Ayr Belleisle were relegated to Division two for 2012.DIVISION 1 Played For Against PointsTroon Welbeck 10 35 25 26Kilmarnock Barassie 10 31.5 28.5 26Loudoun 10 32 28 24Irvine 10 35 25 20Irvine Ravenspark 10 26 34 16Ayr Belleisle 10 20.5 39.5 8

In Division 2, Ballochmyle dominated the competition, storming to the title ahead of Ardeer, whilst Kilbirnie Placewere relegated to Division 3

With no relegation from Division 3 due to the early withdrawals, Prestwick St Cuthbert came out on top of aclosely fought competition.

A final match win by 3.5 – 2.5 at Moorpark for Prestwick St Nicholas gave them the Division 4 trophy at theexpense of Turnberry. Again, due to withdrawals from division 3, there was no relegation from Division 4 in 2011.

The players halved the first sudden death hole in par fours. At the second play-off hole, the twentieth of the match, both Kilbirnie players found rough from the tee, but a wonderful recovery shot by Barry O’Rourke, to ensure at leasta par four, coupled with both Ardeer players missing the green with their approach shots, led to a concession of thehole to give Barry O’Rourke and Robert Nairn of Kilbirnie Place the 2011 Ayrshire Fourball crown.

The 2011 Ayrshire Order of Merit for the Doc Thom Salver included 14 local, national andinternational counting events, and Michael Smyth (Royal Troon) took the honours for thefirst time, with one event to spare, after a second place finish in the Welbeck LinksChampionship in late August.Michael's efforts to take part in the penultimate counting event to secure sufficient pointsto win the order of merit were noteworthy to say the least. On Saturday 27th August Michael and his family travelled back from a trip to the PGA inAtlanta, USA, finally arriving home in Prestwick at 5.00 p.m. that night. Shrugging off anyjet lag, Michael was up early the next morning and led the Welbeck Links after the firstround by two strokes. Although he understandably faded in the second round, his runner upspot behind the winner Stephen Murray (Troon Welbeck) was good enough to put him out

of reach of his nearest challengers for the Doc Thom Ayrshire Order Of merit before the completion of the theArrol Cup at Prestwick St Nicholas, the final qualifying event of the season.Ayrshire Strokeplay Champion Jamie Mackay (Kilmarnock Barassie) was runner up whilst Stephen Murray (TroonWelbeck) took third place.

Ayrshire’s other national title winners in 2011 were the three man team of Craig Hamilton,Graeme Rowan and William Fleming who, as Ayrshire Club Champions, triumphed in theScottish Club Championship finals at Falkirk Tryst in September. Led by former ScottishMid Amateur Champion Hamilton, who recorded scores of 65 and 66 for a superb personal9 under par total, Ballochmyle took the national title by a four stroke margin to becomethe second Ayrshire club in three years to win the trophy. Ballochmyle later representedScotland in the European Club Cup in Turkey in October.

Having provided at least one male national champion each year since 2007, the Ayrshire record was maintainedin 2011 with a pair of national title being brought to Ayrshire during the season.

The season had hardly begun when David Wilson (Troon Welbeck), one of fourteen entrantsfrom the county, triumphed in the Scottish Boys Championship at Dunbar in the mostnotable comeback ever recorded in the history of the event.Playing Liam Johnston (Dumfries & County) in the 36 hole final, Wilson was 8 down after15 holes and 7 behind with 14 holes remaining. In an epic reversal of fortunes, the Welbeckplayer recovered to be two down with two to play and completed an astounding win bytaking the title at the second extra hole.Wilson’s win completed a Scottish Boys treble for his home club after previous wins byMichael Stewart (2008) and Andrew McQueen (1985).Fellow Ayrshire players Euan Walker and Jack McDonald also performed well in the

championship, reaching the last 32.In an outstanding season, Wilson was rewarded at the end of the year with international selection for ScottishSchools as well as the SGU under 16 team, both against England, and inclusion in the Scotland Boys squad for 2012.

Michael Stewart (Troon Welbeck) remained the outstanding men’s amateur golfer, not justin Ayrshire but in Scotland, in 2011. Stewart started the season in great style, winning theSouth African Amateur Championship in March, beating fellow Scot Paul Shields by 5 & 4in the final. In June, Stewart came close to an unprecedented double when he reached the final of theAmateur Championship at Hillside, only to lose out by 3 & 2 in the final to AustralianBryden McPherson.Having been selected to represent Scotland in the European Nations Cup in Sotogrande, theEuropean Men’s Team Championship in Portugal and the Home Internationals in Ireland,Stewart capped his amateur career in September when he became the ninth player fromAyrshire, and the first since Gordon Sherry in 1995, to be selected for the Walker Cup team

when the biannual match was played at Royal Aberdeen. Stewart made a significant contribution to the 14 – 12win achieved by the Great Britain & Ireland side.Named as Scottish Men’s Amateur Golfer of the Year in October, Stewart has since moved to the professional ranksand the best wishes of The Association are extended to Stewart as he pursues the next stage in his golfing career. In addition to Michael Stewart, a number of other Ayrshire golfers enjoyed selection for Scotland teams at variouslevels.

Alasdair Berry (Irvine Ravenspark) retained his place in the Scotland team for the Disabled WorldTeam Championship at Westerwood in July and the World Team Handigolf Championship inSweden in September.

After a season which saw him finish runner up in the South Of Scotland Seniors Open and reachthe quarter finals of the Scottish Seniors Matchplay Championship, Ayrshire President DavidMiller (Kilmarnock Barassie) finished third in the Scottish Seniors Order Of merit and wasrewarded in September with his first Scotland Seniors cap, gaining a place in the team for theSeniors Home Internationals at Woodhall Spa.In the Scottish Amateur Championship at Western Gailes in July, 39 players from Ayrshirestarted out in their bid for the national title and seven players battled through to the last 32.Only one player progressed further however, Scott Brown (Turnberry) bowing out in the last 16to a 3 & 1 defeat by Scotland Internationalist James Byrne.

In national team events, Ayrshire fared well in 2011, improving on the good performances recorded 12 monthsearlier.

The Scottish Area Team Championship were held at Prestwick and Prestwick StNicholas in May and, following their fourth place finish in 2010, Ayrshire againtook one of the four semi finals places after the strokeplay qualifying. In the semi finals, the Ayrshire team of John Haggarty, Jack McDonald, JamieMackay, Gary Bryden, Euan Brown and Michael Smyth lost out to a strong NorthEast team, the defending champions, by 4.5 – 0.5 whilst Fife took the other semifinal by beating Lothians 4 – 1.In a repeat of the bronze medal play off match of 2010, Ayrshire gained revengeover Lothians with Jack McDonald sinking a birdie putt on the last green to seal a 3 – 2 win and give Ayrshire thebronze medals. In the final, Fife won the championship for the first time with a 1.5 – 3.5 win over North east.

The Ayrshire Boys team went one better in the Scottish Boys Area TeamChampionship at Hayston in June when the Troon Welbeck pair of David Wilsonand Charlie Macneal teamed up with Kilmarnock Barassie’s Jack McDonald andEuan Walker to take the silver medals, two shots adrift of winners Lothians.Ayrshire also enjoyed success in ladies golf during 2011 at a number of levels.
