Fellow Hornets,

My name is MONICA CORTEZ and I am running to be your ASI PRESIDENT. As the

My name is George Cordero and I am running for ASI President. I have been an active

member of ASI, serving as the Director of Social Sciences and Interdisciplinary Studies. As

Director, I was able to revamp the Practical Advocacy course and establish a sustainable SSIS

Joint Council. It has been an honor, as I have witnessed, first-hand, ASI’s inner-workings and

impacts on students' lives. Being part of ASI has showed me the importance of student

involvement and the true value of the students’ voice.

I am a fourth year student majoring in Government and Communication Studies. In the recent

years, I have become more active and have grown to appreciate everything that Sacramento State

has to offer. I will continue to represent students to the best of my abilities and STRIVE to

maintain ASI’s integral role in campus life.

If elected, my goal is to continue representing the student body through advocacy efforts and

supporting campus events that promote the growth of Sacramento State as a community. I plan

to introduce events that further engage students and maintain the efforts for alternate food

options through the Farmer’s Market.

Accountability is essential in any student board, and as your President, I plan to uphold the

great legacy and achievements of the past President’s before me. I plan to unite the ASI Board to

work towards strategic priorities that truly embody the student’s needs!

Stand. Vote. STRIVE!

The Executive Vice President (EVP) has a two-fold responsibility. The first responsibility is to

act as the Chair to the ASI Board of Directors. As the current Vice-Chair to the board, I have

gained a great understanding of how the EVP functions. This experience and understanding is

crucial – I ensure that with me as EVP, I will work along side the rest of the board and serve you,

the students, as effectively and efficiently as possible. The second responsibility is to represent

you, the students, and put actions to words. As a current ASI Director, I have never turned away

a student with an issue. I intend on continuing this practice to amplify our voices as students,

creating a stronger environment for higher education.

My experience as the Director of Natural Sciences and Mathematics has opened me up to the

complexities of issues that you and I STRIVE to deal with each day as CSU students. My tenure

has shown me how student actions and ASI Board actions can be drawn together most efficiently

to achieve what we need. My plans are simple, yet powerful: engage students in campus activity

so that we are represented and informed on topics that affect us all; connect students with the

proper resources and with each other to achieve our goals; enhance student life by amplifying

our voice and opinions.

Together we will STRIVE to succeed

Fellow Hornets,

I am GQ DLAMINI, and I am running to become your ASI EXECUTIVE VICE

PRESIDENT. Our most recent time as Hornets has proven challenging inside and outside the

classroom. However, the fact that we are still here is testament to our resilience and dedication.

During these times, we must band together in order to better our own futures.

Over the last three years, I have served and participated with numerous ASI departments, such

as the A-Team. I have also served within auxiliary organizations all over California serving

every position from representative to president, and I look forward to welcoming our incoming

students this summer as an Orientation Leader. Through these organizations I have learned

many structures and practices that I will utilize to strengthen our Student Government. I will be

sure to touch base with our current ASI committees and departments and LEAD their workings

to further benefit you. My priority will be to hold the ASI board accountable and accessible to

you, the students.

This year I envision an ASI that will relentlessly LEAD the engagement of every Hornet, fosters

the success of its students, and continues to meets your needs. As your Executive Vice

My name is Lauren Carpio and I am running for Vice President of Finance. I have held a variety

of coordinator positions for Samahang Pilipino and am the Finance Vice President for Alpha Phi

Omega for the second semester in a row. I’ve been an Accounting Assistant in the ASI Business

Office for nearly two years, where I’ve gained an incredible amount of accounting and finance

experience while working closely with the entire ASI Administrative staff. I have also served on

the DOC Committee as well as the ASI Finance & Budget Committee. Additionally, I have been

appointed vice chair on both committees, so I’ve already had the unique opportunity to begin

learning the VPF position.

Through these organizations and committees, I have seen first-hand so many students who want

to get involved and enhance their college experience, but are unsure how to. Thus, my first

priority is to engage more students in the variety of programs offered through ASI and the

university. I will hold more campus-wide promotional events to connect the campus with the

ASI Board of Directors. I will also continue promoting DOC funding to clubs by personally

keeping in contact with club officers. Finally, I will work to foster healthier lifestyles and

My name is Kyle Tanaka and I am running for Vice President of University Affairs. Since my

freshman year I have wanted to get involved with ASI. This is my third year at Sacramento

State, and during the time I have been involved in different clubs and organizations that have

help change and grow my abilities as a leader. Here is what you can expect out of me:

A candidate who is willing to stand up for student rights and beliefs

A candidate who has been impacted for three years by small class size and increased tuition

A candidate who will listen to student wants and needs in order to foster campus change

Lastly, not only a candidate, but also a student who wants change at Sacramento State

The biggest area of focus that I want to bring to ASI is a stronger push for student involvement.

Whether it is a more focused approach to clubs and organizations, or encouraging students to get

involved with student committees. The commitment to our students needs to be clear and

focused.

workings of the campus. I am an alumni of Chi Delta Sorority in which I held several leadership

positions including: fundraiser, public relations, recruitment, and philanthropy chair. Because I

understand that the decisions ASI makes will directly affect the student body, I will be sure to

represent the needs and concerns of graduate students. I am a passionate and competent young

woman who wants to affect change and take the graduate department in a progressive direction.

Director of Social Sciences & Interdisciplinary Studies

VOTE L.E.A.D.!

Hi! My name is Daniel Angulo and I am a candidate for the Director of Social Science and

Interdisciplinary Studies. I am a current senior majoring in Government with a concentration in

International Relations and a double minor in Marketing and Spanish. It is difficult to believe

how fast a college career can pass by and the personal growth one can acquire. My initial years

were spent working as a student assistant, and enjoying the crazy life of the Residence Halls--Go

Jenkins! I have spent the past three years working as an orientation leader and meeting hundreds

of new Hornets. Most recently, I returned from studying abroad in Granada, Spain for an

academic year, making it my life changing experience. I have also been part of the Educational

Opportunity Program, College Assistance Migrant Program, interned at the office of Assembly

member Dr. Richard Pan, and most currently a member of the American Marketing Association.

As a prospective Hornet graduate, I would finally like to run for ASI and represent Sac State

Students in a local and state level. As a Director, I will inform students on open classes during

registration, school and sports events, job openings, internships and other extracurricular

activities. My goal is to highlight our clubs, organizations, and services in order to motivate

students to get involved. I believe that civic engagement and networking are indispensible skills

a college student should gain. I want to make our campus logo “Leadership Begins Here” a true

statement for everyone.

Vote Daniel Angulo for Director of Social Science and Interdisciplinary Studies (SSIS)

Stand.Vote.STRIVE!

My name is Ricky Hurtado and I am running for Director of Social Sciences and

Interdisciplinary Studies. I’m a Government major and a third year at Sacramento State. I have

been involved in the Government Odyssey Mentoring program, Mujeres Ayudando la Raza, the

Vietnamese Student Association, and am a Founding Father of Pi Kappa Phi. Most importantly, I

have been able to have an internship with a former SSIS Director.

Those are some of the major things I’ve done on campus, and am ready to embark on

this adventure for YOU. In this position, I will represent and give a voice to the students in the

College of SSIS, and the university as a whole. As your director I will make sure you know

where your money goes to and will fight to lower fee increases.

If elected to office I will fight for YOU by lobbying. I will disseminate the ideals of the

Odyssey mentoring program to other departments within the College of SSIS in order for

students to maximize their education. I will be accessible to the students of SSIS to hear their

needs and work on their behalf. This will be done by going to the students, instead of the

students coming to me. Furthermore, I will establish and finalize a joint council so students of

SSIS have a better networking ability! Vote Ricky Hurtado for SSIS Director and together we

will strive to succeed. Si Se Puede!

UUOCI Board of Directors

(1 Candidate)

I am Darsey Varnedoe, and I am running for Director, University Union Operation of CSUS

Inc. Board of Directors. I have been actively involved in several University committees over the

past couple of years. I have been connected, not only with the campus community, but also with

the city community as a City Liaison with the Sacramento State City Ambassadors, a student

formed local advocacy group here on campus, and also as an active member of Lobby Corps., an

established state advocacy group on campus. Leadership is a key element in succeeding not only

in school, but also in life. I strongly believe in Sacramento State’s slogan of “Leadership begins

here.” I make it a priority to advocate on the behalf of my fellow Sacramento State peers. I am

aware of the importance of being actively involved in our campus community. My main goal

will be to immediately address the needs of the students and push an agenda that promotes

student involvement in the campus community. If elected I will make sure the University Union

Operation of CSUS Board of Directors know what the students want and what the students need

since this is the STUDENTS’ University Union. So please come out and VOTE on April 24th

turning it in by the deadline can be listed on the ballot. Each time students vote in favor of any
