12012 Annual Report

It is my privilege to be able to write this, my first introduction to the annual report as the Arvada Center’s new Executive Director – and although I can claim no credit for any of the wonderful work seen on our stages and in our galleries and classrooms in 2012, I am very proud of the work our staff, artists, and volunteers have accomplished.

I’d first like to acknowledge the considerable contributions of Clark Johnson, our Chief Operating Officer (COO), who agreed to serve as Interim Executive Director for what ended up being an entire year. Transitions such as this can be a destabilizing time for an organization, but the Arvada Center avoided this, thanks to Clark’s leadership. I’m pleased to say that Clark continues to serve as our COO, and I couldn’t be happier to have him in this key role; he has already proved himself invaluable to me as I “learn the ropes” of this complex organization.

In 2012, the Arvada Center continued to build upon a tradition of excellence, winning multiple awards and further expanding programming. Among the many wonderful initiatives of my predecessors are our partnerships with area non-profits, and these continued to expand last year as we collaborated with many fine local and regional arts organizations, including theater, music, and dance companies, and even with other civic organizations outside the arts arena.

Our educational programs grew last year as well, with the introduction of the Arvada Center Theater Academy Company. Designed for teens who aspire to acting careers, the Academy Company allows participants to spend an entire year working with the Center’s professional artists and craftspeople, culminating in a year-end production in our Black Box Theater.

2012 was also the year when we stepped up efforts to examine our organizational and governance structure. Working with the Kellogg Organization, we gained valuable insight into our many strengths as well as our challenges, and a Task Force was assembled to make recommendations to the Arvada City Council about possible changes that would strengthen the Center’s financial position and allow us to expand. While the Task Force’s work won’t be concluded until late in 2013, we’re excited about the process and I look forward to announcing future directions in next year’s Annual Report.

As we look to the future, there are many exciting possibilities to consider, as well as many institutional challenges. In my short time here, I have already received a number of worthy proposals for future programs in the arts and humanities – and while we can’t do everything, we will be looking for ways to build on our current offerings, in order to reach more members of the community, and to diversify our audience and patron base. I hope you’ll join us as we move into the future.

Our MissionThe mission of the Arvada Center for the Arts and Humanities is to inspire the residents of our region to live and learn creatively by experiencing the performing arts, visual arts, educational programs and historical exhibits.

Our Vision The Arvada Center offers its patrons the opportunity to develop an improved understanding of themselves and their environment through a direct experience with the arts.

Our HistoryThe Arvada Center began humbly as a place to preserve local history. However, thanks to forward-thinking citizens, a broader vision developed, and what was merely a heritage museum expanded to become a multidisciplinary facility that is now a model for arts centers across the nation. Dedicated on July 4, 1976, through a unique collaboration between citizens and government, the Arvada Center welcomed nearly 12,000 patrons its first year. It now ranks as the eighth-largest cultural attraction in metro Denver and is one of the leading employers of creative people in Colorado. Through its diversity of arts programming, continuous commitment to underserved communities, creative partnerships with other cultural organizations and nationally-recognized services for individuals with disabilities, the Arvada Center serves nearly 350,000 visitors annually. With more than half of its patrons coming from outside Arvada and surrounding Jefferson County, the Center’s influence now extends far beyond its name. Generously supported in part by over 2,500 individual and corporate donors, foundations, the Scientific & Cultural Facilities District and the City of Arvada, the award-winning Arvada Center celebrated its 36th season in 2012 dedicated to enriching, inspiring and educating all ages.

Putting on the Show

The Arvada Center knows how to “put on a show” like it has never been done before. The Center takes great pride in preserving the art of stagecraft so it can provide patrons with the very best in live theater. With steadfast devotion to artistic excellence, the Center mounted eight theatrical productions in 2012 in its 526-seat Main Stage and 226-seat Black Box Theaters, entertaining more than 70,000 theater enthusiasts from across the Front Range and beyond. Center productions star talent from Broadway to Hollywood and feature actors, designers, choreographers and crew who are the top in their fields from throughout Colorado. These highly-skilled artists and craftspeople design and build every aspect of Center productions, making Arvada Center Theater an exceptional and award-winning experience.

Main Stage theater renovation A $138,000 renovation of the Main Stage Theater during the summer of 2012 was the first major overhaul of the theater since 1999. The highlight of the project was the installation of 526 new seats, complete with cup holders, which replaced seats that were 36 years old and original to the Center when it opened in 1976. The new seats are more ergonomic, with backs that are four inches taller and padding that is also four inches thick - an inch more than the standard. Two new rows of seats were added as part of the project. Other improvements included new sound-absorbing wall panels, an expanded stage and a retooled sound booth.

arvada Center winS toP theater honor

The Arvada Center came away with the top honor at the seventh annual Colorado Theatre Guild Henry Awards, a local celebration of the theater community similar to the Tony Awards. Nominated for 25 awards, the Arvada Center won in four categories including the coveted Outstanding Season for a Theatre Company. The Center’s Artistic Director, Rod Lansberry, was delighted to receive the sought-after achievement award from the Guild. “This award recognizes everyone involved in all of our productions and the elements that made them a critical success - from the actors to the artistic and creative teams, box office, administrative staff and of course our audiences, whose loyal support allows us to continue to create the quality we strive for.” In 2012, Arvada Center Theater received 18 awards, including six Marlowe Awards for its production of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and three for The Importance of Being Earnest.

Partnering for PetS The Arvada Center was proud to partner with Foothills Animal Shelter for the casting of the two canine companions featured in its smash-hit summer production, Legally Blonde, The Musical. Instead of auditioning family pets for this production, the Center chose to use dogs from a local shelter. Happily, it did not take Foothills Animal Shelter long to find the perfect canines to fill the two iconic roles. With a haircut and a dye job, a stray two-year-old Chihuahua terrier mix became “Bruiser,” the loyal companion of the show’s lead character Elle Woods. Another shelter resident, a French bulldog named Pickles, landed the role of “Rufus,” the adored pooch of supporting character, Paulette the manicurist. The backstory of these two canines, along with the unique partnership between the Center and the Shelter led to many successful pet adoptions, including a very happy ending for the two canine leads. “Bruiser” ended up being adopted by the stage manager who fostered her throughout the production, and “Rufus” found a permanent home with a Foothills board member.

aCCeSSible theater The Arvada Center is dedicated to providing barrier-free access to the arts. This mission includes providing interpreted theater performances for children with hearing and visual challenges. Shadow-interpreting is a dynamic method where actors have a “shadow” that follows them, mirroring movements and translating dialogue into American Sign Language. By incorporating the interpreters into the play, children with hearing challenges are able to watch and enjoy the performance without dividing their attention between the actor and the interpreter, who is traditionally located to one side of the stage. Audio-described theater uses a closed-circuit system of microphones and headsets. Specially-trained personnel, who are often actors themselves, provide the narration. Their task is to create pictures with words, helping students with visual impairments to “see” the action on stage by listening to descriptions of action, costumes and scenery. In 2012, the Center’s wide range of accessibility services provided barrier-free access to the arts for 4,000 children and adults with disabilities.

artS day and outreaCh

For more than 30 years, the Arvada Center has been a community resource for arts education. As one of the few multidisciplinary cultural organizations in the region, the Arvada Center is uniquely suited for this important role. The Center’s educator-respected Arts Day program is a fun, hands-on, educational arts experience for preschool through high school students. Each customizable Arts Day field trip, in addition to a theater performance, includes an arts workshop and an arts discovery experience - gallery tour, history museum visit or actor-led theater tech talk. In 2012, nearly 40,000 students had their own “Arts Day,” including 8,000 low-income and disabled youth. The Center’s Outreach program offers an array of arts workshops and performances that inspire, entertain and most importantly educate students in their own classroom. In 2012, this program made a difference in the lives of nearly 9,200 children at 133 schools.

how i beCaMe a Pirate

In 2012, the Center’s acclaimed children’s theater wing found a bounty of buried treasure with its production of How I Became a Pirate, landing an audience of nearly 46,000. Based on the best-selling book by Melinda Long, the adventure-filled musical production told the story of young Jeremy Jacob, recruited for his exceptional digging and treasure-burying skills by Captain Braid Bread. Thinking the pirate life is for him, Jeremy sets sail with the Captain and a band of lovable pirates, but soon learns on the hilarious and character-building journey that the most important things in life cannot be found on any treasure map.

Launched in fall 2012, this multi-faceted program offers the opportunity for teens interested in acting careers to work alongside the Arvada Center’s award-winning directors, choreographers, actors, designers and technical staff to learn the entire art of theater. Auditions are held in the fall and Company actors perform in two productions, while deepening their skills and knowledge in the areas of character work, scene study, auditioning and production training. The Company debuted its first fully-staged work in spring 2013 with a production of Pippin.

With its wide array of offerings in the performing and visual arts, the Arvada Center provides inspiring,

art-based learning opportunities for patrons of all ages. Its 750 classes,

camps and academy programs served nearly 7,000 students in 2012.

Building on its wildly successful summer camp program, the Center

introduced spring break camps in 2012, offering its most popular programs and instructors in the

week-long session that included a children’s theater performance.

The Arvada Center’s Front Range Youth Symphony Orchestras (FRYS), feature three participant levels: Youth Symphony, Concert Strings Orchestra and Chamber Orchestra. The Center’s year-round training in orchestral music is offered as an enhancement to school music programs and all students are required to participate in their school’s instrumental music programs. Students audition each May, rehearse weekly and perform in three concerts annually on Center stages. The highlight each year is the annual spring Teacher Appreciation Concert where FRYS musicians pay tribute to their teachers with complimentary admission and a program of specially chosen music. FRYS enrollment for 2012 was up 22% over the previous year. Looking forward, FRYS plans to add a beginning string orchestra to accommodate younger students and those that are homeschooled.

In 2012, the Arvada Center offered academy training in ballet, jazz and modern dance, along with classes in tap and hip hop. As part of the professional-level training program the Arvada Center offers, academy students have the opportunity to dance in its Main Stage Theater several times a year in fully-staged concerts. The Academy’s performing company, Arvada Center Dance Theater, features the talents of dedicated students, ages 12-18, who audition annually for a panel of dance professionals in order to earn a position in the company. Arvada Center Dance Theater performs at the Arvada Center and in community outreach and fund-raising events.

SMart art

The artworks featured in Arvada Center galleries became a lot smarter in 2012. Beginning with its summer exhibition series FACES, PLACES AND SPACES, the Center began incorporating “augmented reality” technology in its galleries, making selected artworks more interactive and dynamic. “Smart Art” enhances the existing “Guide by Cell” audio tour by offering patrons the opportunity to connect with artists in new and interesting ways using their personal smart phones. For visitors with a long-time appreciation and understanding of art, “Smart Art” adds breadth and depth to their gallery visit. For visitors just beginning to experience and appreciate visual art, “Smart Art” is an easy, enjoyable and educational introduction to what Arvada Center galleries and exhibitions have to offer.

The Arvada Center continued to expand the scope and delivery of its gallery operations in 2012 through notable collaborations and partnerships, hosting a dozen exhibitions in its three distinctive gallery spaces. A complete list is below. It was an honor for Galleries at the Center to be included in two national art publications in 2012. The November 2012 issue of Sculpture, an international magazine dedicated to all forms of contemporary sculpture, featured Arvada Center galleries and its Robert Mangold retrospective. The art magazine, art ltd., which covers the contemporary art scene in Western and Midwestern states, published the article “Arvada Center Looks at WOMEN OF INFLUENCE in Colorado” in its November 2012 edition.

featured more than 50 works from 1955 to the present. Presented in the Center’s Main Gallery, in surrounding outdoor areas and on the grounds of the Arvada City Hall, the impressive exhibition represented all of Mangold’s four distinct artistic series: Anemotives, I-Beam, Tetrahedralhypersphere and PTTSAAES (Point Traveling Through Space At An Erratic Speed). Robert Mangold’s work can be seen not only across Denver, but also throughout the world, and now in Arvada. Based on the overwhelming success of the Mangold exhibition and the popularity of his work, the City of Arvada recently purchased a Mangold sculpture through its Art in Public Places program. The red Anemotive Kinetic 8/08 is currently on exhibit outside the Arvada Center until a permanent location is determined.

volunteerSThe Arvada Center is fortunate to have a dedicated labor force of volunteers who provide invaluable service in helping meet its diverse operational needs. In 2012, 266 volunteers contributed over 23,000 hours of support. On any given day, Arvada Center volunteers can be found ushering patrons to their theater seats, escorting school groups to arts workshops, leading gallery and museum tours, providing clerical support, preparing materials for education programs, assisting with various backstage needs and much more. In addition, the Arvada Center provides a fertile training ground for individuals interested in pursuing careers in the creative industries. Annually, the Center offers internships in everything from technical theater and exhibition design to development and marketing. The Center also provides teens with opportunities to gain work experience as summer camp interns and aides.
