Dear Friends and Supporters,

Please allow me to put something in perspective about the collective nature of the citizens of Northeast Florida. Yes, it’s going to include some numbers. And yes, I’m going to tell you that we are a special place to live because there is a very important quality that unites us, despite our sometimes noisy and irritating differences. According to the Corporation for National and Community Service in their 2012 study,

Volunteering and Civic Life in America, 64.3 million people in the U. S. volunteered during the preceding year in a formal organization and for all kinds of reasons. That’s a 26.6% rate of volunteering for us as a nation. The snapshot of Florida isn’t quite as rosy, and the number falls to 22.9%, putting our fair state in 45th place. But wait, there’s more—and it’s the good news! Jacksonville’s rate is 32.2%, significantly ahead of our sister cities: Tampa’s rate is 26.6%, ranking them 30th of the 51 largest metropolitan statistical areas in the study; Orlando’s rate is 19.3%, putting them in 48th place; and Miami’s rate is 16.3%, ranking them 51st. Drum roll please—Jacksonville’s rate of 32.2% places us in 5th place, up from 22nd place in 2011, which was significantly up from 33rd place in 2010. Are we special? You decide. We’ve already made up our minds here at HandsOn Jacksonville!

So the next time you get upset at an elected official who doesn’t share your opinion, or the next time you hear about an organization that supports beliefs with which you disagree, or the next time you get into a dispute with your neighbor about trimming the hedge, I want you to remember this: At the core we are a community of people that want to do good, that want to help others, that want to reach higher and contribute more. A commitment to service is a quality that unites us and that can build bridges of understanding among us, even when we vehemently disagree with the other on some other matter. In spite of our differences, we can make a difference in our community when we work together. And we have. Take another look at our numbers. And thank you for taking a look at our annual report and sharing with others the good work that this agency accomplishes by helping so many people follow through on their fundamental urge to do good and make a difference!

HandsOn Jacksonville’s Youth Service Leadership Council convenes each year to address some of our community’s greatest needs and organize volunteer projects to make an impact for Global Youth Service Day. The 2012 council conducted five major projects including a HandsOn for Hope Family Fun Fest for children and families fighting cancer, a Youth Against Texting and Driving educational campaign, a project to fight hunger and two envirornmental projects.

Volunteers Mean Business

Military Engagement

Disaster Preparedness

We mobilized 132 corporate volunteers who gave 1,313 hours of service, infusing $41,054 of

value into our community!

We mobilized 549 volunteers who gave 2,032 hours of service,

providing 2,586 individuals assistance.

HandsOn Jacksonville offers fee-for-service solutions to businesses seeking to promote a positive community presence, meet corporate social responsibility goals and mobilize employee volunteers to give back to the community. We work with businesses to assess their needs, and coordinate with our nonprofit partners to design and manage volunteer projects to meet their goals and achieve maximum impact in our community. 2012 Corporate Employee Partners were Fidelity Investments, Nestle and JetBlue.

In 2012, HandsOn Jacksonville was a pilot site for the Community Blueprint Network, a national initiative aimed at better coordinating existing services between organizations in an effort to more effectively serve the mili-tary community. A large part of the Community Blueprint focuses on viewing our military veterans, active duty service members, and their families as community assets and engaging them in meaningful volunteer experi-ences while simultaneously creating more volunteer opportunities that serve the military community. The goal of this initiative is to increase the quality of life for individuals connected to the military while creating stronger ties with the community as a whole.

In the event of a major disaster, volunteers do come running to help. What they do and how they are utilized has tremendous impact on how quickly and effectively the community recovers. HandsOn Jacksonville has developed and tested a plan to effectively manage volunteers who are unaffiliated with local response organizations, and in the event of disaster will activate a Volunteer Reception Center to help ensure the skills and talents of volunteers are matched to areas of critical need. In addition, HandsOn Jacksonville works to prepare local families for potential disaster.

We trained 10 adults to present our disaster preparedness program to

youth-serving organizations. We distributed disaster kits and information to

400 kids to bring home to their families.

A Visit fromSt. Nicholas

Magical Holiday Visit

On the first Friday morning in December, thousands of children in select elementary schools arrive to find their hallways covered in gold tinsel. As they enter their classrooms, curiosity turns to excitement! At each desk is a back sack filled with books and toys. For many children, these are the first books they will be able to call their own, and for some, these will be the only gifts they receive during the holiday season. Volunteers visit each classroom to read the story that celebrates the life of Nicholas, a boy based on a European tradition that celebrates anonymous giving. The highlight of the day is when a real-life St. Nicholas visits the students, presenting them with kindness coins. This literacy-promotion program is taken to schools where 70% or more of the children are on a free or subsidized lunch plan.

Blueprint for Leadership is Northeast Florida’s premier training program to equip culturally diverse community leaders to serve on nonprofit boards of directors.

Blueprint for Leadership offers five full-day training sessions involving leadership topics, class discussion and group exercises. These classes are held one day each month, January through May.

In June, the cohort creates and executes its own volunteer project and celebrates its success at a graduation ceremony. Following graduation, each participant is given the opportunity to experience an effective nonprofit board in action through a one-year internship.

The Hope FundThe Hope Fund is a collaborative effort between HandsOn Jacksonville, The University of North Florida and The Florida Times-Union. Participating nonprofit agencies provide information on circumstances and special needs of selected clients, and UNF journalism students write articles about them and their particular situations that run as front-page features in The Florida Times-Union between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Florida Times-Union offers editorial commentary telling readers how they can support The Hope Fund with contributions. Funds donated are divided among participating organizations that purchase goods and services to meet basic needs.

We raised $100,969 for 38 of our Nonprofit Partner agencies to distribute to their clients in need.

Of 614 donors, 349 chose to remain anonymous.

In April, during National Volunteer Week, Florida Volunteer Month and Jacksonville Volunteer Appreciation Month, HandsOn Jacksonville selects members of the community who do exemplary volunteer work to honor and tell their stories. This fun and inspiring evening begins with a beautifully produced video presentation telling the stories of the amazing work volunteers are doing in our community. It continues with a lively party including food from some of the best local restaurants, live music, silent auction and the opportunity to personally meet the people who are selflessly touching our community for GOOD!
