DESCRIPTION

The Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals is a 501(c)(3) non-profit charity that works with more than 150 partner rescue groups and no-kill shelters to offer important programs and services to save the lives of NYC’s homeless animals. Receiving no government funding, we are supported by donations from foundations, corporations, and individuals. As we mark our tenth anniversary in 2013, we are committed to transforming New York City into a no-kill community by 2015: where no dogs or cats of reasonable health and temperament will be killed merely because they do not have homes. www.AnimalAllianceNYC.org

This year we celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Mayor’s Alliance, and the

eighth year in our ten-year strategic plan to transform New York City

into a no-kill community. We continued to drive down euthanasia at Animal

Care & Control of New York City (AC&C), while intake at AC&C continued to

decline. In 2012, intake and euthanasia reached historic lows, and for the first time

in AC&C’s history, euthanasia fell well below 10,000, to 8,252.

Since 2003, through our robust community

collaboration among 100-plus Maddie’s Pet

Partners (MPPs) and AC&C, we have saved

237,000 lives. New York City now has the

lowest euthanasia per capita for any major

U.S. city. In just ten years, we have altered the

paradigm from one out of three lives saved in

2003 to over three out of every four lives saved

in 2012 by the community collaboration.

Our decade of success is the result of

the steadfast efforts of all of our Alliance

Participating Organizations (APOs), which now

number 150, that work diligently to provide

care for NYC’s homeless animals and place

them with responsible adopters.

So much of this work is performed by

volunteers, to whom we, and the animals,

are eternally grateful. Our success would

not have been possible were it not for the

substantial financial support provided by

Maddie’s Fund®, and the ongoing commitment

of funds and resources by the ASPCA, one of

our founding members.

Our ability to sustain and build those

programs that have the greatest impact in

saving lives relies upon the generosity and commitment of caring individuals and

businesses that recognize the importance of our mission and value the results we

have achieved. Some of our supporters donate regularly to specific programs,

such as our Wheels of Hope transport program, our PVF Medical & Boarding

Fund, or our NYC Feral Cat Initiative. Others give generously to support our overall

efforts, relying upon us to put their valued gift to use where it is most needed.

Today, ten years into our journey, we are heartened and humbled by the

progress we have made with the help of our supporters. We invite you to join us in

our journey and share with us the unqualified satisfaction that can only come from

saving a precious life.

Alliance President Jane Hoffman co-founded the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals in 2003, with the goal of ending the killing of healthy and treatable animals in NYC shelters.

Vision Establish New York City as a community where no dog or cat of reasonable health and temperament is killed merely because he or she does not have a home.

mission In cooperation with the City of New York, the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals seeks to establish partnerships with nonprofit animal organizations to develop creative solutions to deal with issues of animal care and control. Through our multi-year program, we will help these animal advocacy groups reach their highest potential to effectively place and spay/neuter New York City’s dogs and cats.

Since 2003, the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals

has served as a crucial link between New York

City’s rescue community and NYC government. Our

role as a liaison between Animal Care & Control of NYC

(AC&C), the non-profit that contracts with the City to

manage its animal control function, and the more than

150 rescue groups and shelters that strive daily to find

homes for our community’s homeless animals, has been

instrumental in creating a cohesive infrastructure for

lifesaving. This involves transferring thousands of dogs

and cats from AC&C, via its New Hope Department, to

more than 200 New Hope partner rescue organizations

that find homes for them. It also involves raising public

awareness about the thousands of animals available

for adoption, and providing a mechanism, through

events, media outreach, and advertising, to facilitate pet

adoptions on a large scale in New York City.

In 2012, euthanasia fell to 8,252, marking the first time in AC&C’s history that fewer than 9,000 cats and dogs were euthanized.

Major drivers of the reduced euthanasia rate include vigorous community spay/neuter efforts and transfers to AC&C’s adoption partners.

Adoption EventsLarge, multi-group adoption events like Adoptapalooza, Whiskers in Wonderland, and Broadway Barks offer adopters a convenient way to meet hundreds of dogs, cats, and rabbits awaiting new homes.

Rescue Group and Shelter SupportFrom animal transport and adoption events to specialized training and grants, the Alliance provides the tools to help rescue organizations excel and save more lives.

Wheels of HopeSince 2005, more than 56,000 animals have journeyed toward a new future in our Wheels of Hope transport vehicles.

Medical & Boarding FundThis Alliance-administered program, created by Bernadette Peters and Mary Tyler Moore in 2003, provides medical treatment and boarding for sick and injured animals awaiting adoption.

Disaster ReliefIn times of crisis, as during Hurricanes Irene and Sandy, the Alliance—a member of the Animal Planning Task Force of NYC’s Office of Emergency Management—stepped up with emergency animal transport, co-sheltering support, volunteers, and leadership, and helped to save countless lives.

Awareness BuildingHarnessing the power of traditional and social media, public relations, advertising, and website and print communications, the Alliance uses every avenue possible to promote pet adoption and responsible pet ownership.

For a decade, the Alliance has remained focused on its vision: to create a community

where no healthy or treatable dog or cat is killed merely because he or she does not

have a home. From the start, we knew our vision was attainable, and we recognized

that progress would be incremental. Our journey, as illustrated below, remains a work in

progress. We thank our partners and supporters for the work they have done, and for the

progress we all share.

the years, more groups joined our ranks, and today, more than 150 organizations

participate in the Alliance. Each and every one of these organizations has as its primary

goal to save the lives of the animals that come into their care and to find each one the best

home possible. By combining our resources, overcoming our differences, and working

together in the true spirit of community collaboration, together we have saved close to a

Petco FoundationThe Petco Foundation is a longtime supporter of pet adoption and a strong advocate for bringing adoptable animals to

the people. Hundreds of adoption

groups across the country, including many Alliance Participating Organizations in and around New York City, routinely show their adoptable animals at Petco locations. In 2007, the Petco Foundation donated a new transport vehicle to our Wheels of Hope program, and in 2011, made a generous donation of a new mobile adoption van to the Alliance to help increase pet adoptions in New York City. The Foundation also has provided grant funding for Alliance large adoption events, including Adoptapalooza, and training efforts.

alex and ani + energyAlex and Ani is a company that believes deeply in the power of positive energy. It has made it its mission to share the

benefits of positive energy through the unique beauty and symbolism of its products,

designed by Carolyn Rafaelian and made in the USA. Sales of Alex and Ani’s exclusive Charity by Design Paw Prints expandable bangle, created exclusively to benefit the Alliance and introduced in 2011, continue to generate important funding that supports our life-saving programs.
