At the conclusion of this weekend we will have attended 70 Christmas at Luther performances in the past 14 years. Surely there is no greater presidential privilege. Just as Jesus’s birth is a gift of pure joy to be received each year, each of these performances has been a treasure. Christmas at Lu-ther affirms our mission as a college of the church and it reminds us of what makes us most grateful: our students. We are adoptive grandparents who are immensely proud!

We hope these young men and women realize what a tremen-dous gift it is to be able to create beauty and, through sacred song, to connect listeners intimately to God. Music at Luther College reveals a wonderful synergy on campus: we seek to teach, guide, and inspire our students, and they in turn enrich and inspire us.

We give thanks for many things as we transition from Luther at the end of this academic year, especially for the marvelous way God’s faithful love is expressed in community. We rejoice that you are part of the Luther College community and we wish you a Christmas season of joyful renewal.

Soli Deo Gloria!

Gloria in excelsis Deo.

Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong? What the gladsome tidings beWhich inspire your heav’nly song?

Come to Bethlehem and seeHim whose birth the angels sing;Come, adore on bended kneeChrist the Lord, the newborn King.

See him in the manger laid,Whom the choirs of angels praise;Mary, Joseph, lend your aid,While our hearts in love we raise.

and sing.

Once in royal David’s CityStood a lowly cattle shed Where a mother laid her Baby In a manger for His bed; Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child.

He came down to earth from heaven, Who is God and Lord of all, And His shelter was a stable,

And His cradle was a stall; With the poor, and meek, and lowly, Lived on earth our Saviour holy.

And our eyes at last shall see Him, Through His own redeeming love. For that Child so dear and gentle Is our Lord in heav’n above; And He leads His children on To the place where He is gone.

Not in that poor lowly stable,With the oxen standing by.We shall see him, but in heaven,Set on God’s right hand on high; There his children gather round,Bright like stars, with glory crowned.

On Christmas night all Christians sing,To hear the news the angels bring,News of great joy, news of great mirth,News of our merciful King’s birth.

Then why should we on earth be so sad,

Since our Redeemer made us glad? When from our sin he set us free,All for to gain our liberty?

When sin departs before his grace,Then life and health come in its place,Angels and people with joy may sing,All for to see the newborn King.

All out of darkness we have light,Which made the angels sing this night:“Glory to God and peace to all,Now and forevermore. Amen.”

deep.Nowell, Nowell, Nowell,Born is the King of Israel.

Come, ye poor, no pomp of stationRobes the Child your hearts adore:He, the Lord of all salvation,Shares your want, is weak and poor:Oxen, round about behold them;Rafters naked, cold and bare,See the shepherds, God has told themThat the Prince of Life lies there.

Come, ye children, blithe and merry,This one Child your model make;Christmas holly, leaf and berry,All be praised for his dear sake;Come, ye gentle hearts, and tender,Come, ye spirits, keen and bold; All in all your homage render,Weak and mighty, young and old.High above a star is shining,And the Wisemen haste from far:

Come, glad hearts, and spirits pining:For you all has ris’n the star.Let us bring our poor oblations,Thanks and love and faith and praise:Come, ye people, come, ye nations,All in all draw nigh to gaze.

Now to the Lord sing praises,All you within this place,And with true love and brotherhoodEach other now embrace; This holy tide of ChristmasAll others doth deface.O tidings of comfort and joy.

To God with love this Christmas Day;In Bethlehem upon that mornThere was a blessed Messiah born.

The night before that happy tide,The noble Virgin and her guideWere long time seeking up and downTo find a lodging in the town. But mark how all things came to pass:From every door repelled alas!As long foretold, their refuge allWas but an humble ox’s stall.

Near Bethlehem shepherds keepTheir flocks of lambs and feeding

sheep; To whom God’s angels did appear,Which put the shepherds in great fear. “Prepare and go,” the angels said,“To Bethlehem be not afraid; For there you’ll find, this happy morn,A princely babe, sweet Jesus born.Near Bethlehem, sweet Jesus born.”

With thankful heart and joyful mind,The shepherds went the babe to find,And as God’s angel had foretold,They did our Savior Christ behold.Within a manger he was laid,And by his side the Virgin maid,Attending on the Lord of Life,Who came on earth to end all strife.

Music at Luther (http://music.luther.edu)The Luther campus is alive with the sounds of six choirs, three bands, three orchestras, and two jazz bands. Nearly 1,000 student musicians participate in our large ensembles, faculty-coached chamber groups, private lessons, and master classes. More than 300 students pursue the rigorous Luther music major, studying music theory, ear training, history, music education, composition, church music, and performance. It all adds up to one of the largest collegiate music programs in the world!

Martin Luther—our namesake—believed music to be “one of the most magnificent and delightful presents God has given us.” For more than 130 years, Luther students have been sharing this marvelous gift with audiences across the country and around the globe.

Luther College (www.luther.edu)Founded in 1861 by Norwegian immigrants, Luther College provides its 2,500 students with a classic liberal arts education.

Luther offers more than 60 majors and preprofessional and certificate programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree. The college’s strong academic program includes internships, professional semesters, and extensive study-abroad opportunities. Dedicated and talented faculty help Luther students develop solid research, writing, and critical-thinking skills, while the close-knit community imbues its members with an environmental and service ethos.

The Phi Beta Kappa college is bolstered by its Lutheran foundation, celebrated for its vibrant music and arts tradition, and enriched by its strong athletic program.
