2012 - 2013 VIRTUES CALENDAR
Artwork obtained from the Institute for Catholic Education
“Preach the gospel always, if necessary use words.” ~ St. Francis of Assisi.
Welcome back to the 2012-2013 school year. I hope you had a relaxing and enjoyable summer and feel refreshed and ready for a new school year.
We are pleased to provide you with our Character Education Calendar which outlines our virtues of deep caring and activities to support our faith journey in partnership between home, parish, and our school communities.
Our goal in the area of Catholicity continues to undertake initiatives that sustain and grow the life and strength of Catholic education. The faith formation that takes place in the Catholic school is designed to support and complement that which takes place in the context of the child’s family.
We believe that through our partnership with our parents, parish priests, and staff within the Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board, we will provide our students with a Catholic faith filled learning opportunity. Our Character Education Calendar provides opportunities to support students as they develop their skills in the area of the Catholic Graduate Expectations. As outlined in the CGE’s, the Ontario Catholic school graduate is a discerning believer; an effective communicator; a reflective, creative, holistic thinker; a life long learner; a collaborative contributor; a caring family member, and a responsible citizen.
The prayers, activities and reflections shared throughout our Character Education Calendar support our belief that: “In being Christ-centered in all that we do, ensuring that Catholic values and teachings are woven through every dimension of the students’ learning experience, giving particular focus to social justice and living a faith-filled life,” our students will reflect a truly Catholic Culture of Caring.

SEPTEMBER 2012
Dear God,
You are truly great, and have created all things out of love and goodness. In this new school year, help me to always honour myself as Your beloved child ~ one who loves and respects others, as You love and respect me. Teach me to live in the Spirit of Jesus who showed respect and reverence for all.
Amen.
As beloved children, we reverence God who gives us life, and respect ourselves and others as unique persons, created in God’s image. We also care for the environment as God’s gift to us.

What does it feel like, sound and look like when you reverence God with your whole being? How can we make our classroom rules show that having reverence for God is important to us?
As a class, list challenging situations which can cause you to respond disrespectfully. In groups, role play respectful and courteous ways of responding that will lead to growth.
As a class, finalize your classroom rules which will helpyoupracticeJ.O.Y.

At meal time this weekend, pray a prayer of thanksgiving for the gifts which each member of your family brings to you.
Create a family manners jar. When someone uses manners to be courteous, add a token to the jar. When it is full, celebrate with a family reward.
Think of how you want to grow as a person this year. What new skills and habits do you want to learn? List these on a “Growth Pledge” and place it in your class in a
“time capsule” to be re-visited at the end of the year.
Praise and thank God by celebrating with God’s family at Sunday Mass.
Write a prayer of thanks telling God that you appreciate the gifts and abilities He has given you.
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.
… Love your neighbour as you love yourself.”
Matthew 22:37-39

DECEMBER 2012
Dear God,
Like the people of old during that first Advent season, I place my hope in You, knowing that You are with me always – yesterday, today, tomorrow, and forever! When I feel sad or discouraged, remind me of Your faithful love and guide me to use wisely the gifts that You have given me to overcome the challenges of life. Through my words and actions, help me to be a source of hope for others who struggle. Teach me to live in the Spirit of Jesus, whose birth fulfilled the hopes of all people.
Amen.
Hope is having a joyful trust in the future, even when we are experiencing difficulty in the present time. Knowing God’s love for us, leads us to look forward with confidence to the day when we will live forever with God in Heaven.

JANUARY 2013
Dear God,
In winter time when nature seems to sleep and the world awaits the new life of spring, I am reminded of Your patient love which always waits for my response. Help me to learn the lessons of winter: to be patient with people who bother me, and wait my turn without complaining, accepting that Your timing may be different than mine. Teach me to live in the Spirit of Jesus Your Son, who with patient acceptance, carried out Your mission in the world.
Amen.
Patience is quiet hope and trust that everything will turn out well, even when it is now difficult. To be patient is to be like God who never gives up calling us to love Him, and walk in His way.

Dear God,
I praise You for showing me what is right and wrong through the example and teachings of Jesus, and the Church. Form my conscience in the truth, so that I can make choices that are loving and good, even when it is hard. Give me courage to stand up for what I believe, and work for justice in all circumstances. Help me to walk in the Spirit of Your Son, who always lived life with integrity.
Amen

Dear God,
I thank You for creating us as a human family, to communicate honestly and sincerely with one another. Teach me to honour my relationships by always acting in a sincere trustworthy manner, and help me to always tell the truth kindly, tactfully, and respectfully. As I admit my faults and mistakes, may I also compassionately accept the failings of others, realizing that all of us are on a journey of growth. Help me to walk in the Spirit of Jesus, the Way, the TRUTH, and the life.
Amen.

With a partner share a time that you did practice honesty, and a time when you did not, and tell how it felt.
Write a note saying something positive about another student. Share it with the class and present it to the classmate.
Write a letter to yourself committing to do something positive over the summer. Place it in an envelope with your home address written on it. Teacher mails it back to you in the summer time.
Open your time capsule from September and reflect on your growth pledge. What new skills and habits did you acquire?
Discuss with your family what honesty is and is not. Point out, for example, that being honest doesn’t mean telling someone you think he/she is ugly. Kindness goes along with honesty.
Make a plan to stay in touch with friends over the summer.
Pray the Our Father, line by line and discuss how God is an “Abba” (daddy) to us.
At your family meeting, share a mistake that you have recently made and how it has helped you to grow.

Stop for a moment and ask yourself. “What do I want my child’s and my relationship to be?” If you want to be close to your children, there are ways to create a strong bond.
Are you spending time each day talking? Do you do fun things together? Do you pray together? If you do these three things with your child, a solid bond will develop between you, no matter the age of your child.
Our children are richer when we let them know that we, even as adults, want to grow, too, and that we hope to keep growing all our lives.

Good communication is the essential ingredient in all healthy relationships. If we want to know our children and make them feel important, we need to listen to them attentively.
Children who hear that they are loved in many different ways are likely to find their own ways to say it to the people they love – all through their lives.
One of the most essential ways of saying I love you is by careful listening – listening with “the ear of the heart”.
Even people who care deeply about each other can agree to disagree about some things.

We all make mistakes and mistakes are opportunities to learn. Teach your child the 3 R’s of recovery after they make a mistake. Recognize their mistake, Reconcile and say they are sorry, and Resolve by focusing on solutions instead of laying blame.
Yourchildrenbecomewhatthey observe. Each action and word spoken sends a message to your children. Are you sending the message you want your child to receive?

The internet can be a great resource to children but it can also be fraught with danger. Monitor the use of the internet in your home. Place your computer in a high traffic area, using programs to control access to unwanted sites.
Undertake household chores together. Sharing chores as a family will create a family bond and develop a sense of responsibility in your children.
As you and your children begin preparing for school, take some time to sit with your child and plan for success. Ask them what their goal for the upcoming school year is and then help them to put together an action plan.
