The Community Foundation 2012-2013 Board of Directors

Karen Bilowith President & CEO

Dear friends: 2012 proved to be an excellent year for the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region. Our donors invested nearly $9 million into their communities through gifts to the Foundation, and together we were able to distribute nearly $4.5 million in grants to nonprofit organizations and in scholarships to local students. This is more than we have ever been able to grant before, and we are immensely grateful to the supporters who made this tremendous growth possible.

The Foundation is a vehicle for flexible, innovative and creative philanthropy. We work with donors to help them understand the areas of need in our community, and the most effective ways for them to have an impact in their areas of interest.

At the same time, the Community Foundation plays a critical role in helping local nonprofit organizations meet the increasingly complex needs facing our communities. Our staff, board of directors and committee volunteers constantly explore continuing and emerging community needs, as well as the ways in which local organizations are responding. Through our close involvement with local nonprofit organizations and private businesses, the Foundation is able to recommend partnerships, leadership training, operational guidance and additional funding resources, all to assist nonprofit organizations in achieving their missions.

By bringing together a diverse group of voices, including donors, private businesses, nonprofit organizations and other stakeholders, the Community Foundation is defining a new model for informed giving. The Foundation is proud to be a resource for nonprofit organizations that want to do more, and a vehicle for philanthropists who want to have a true, measurable impact.

We extend our deepest thanks to all of you: our board of directors, donors, committee volunteers, staff and our nonprofit and business partners. Together, we can continue to grow and make a difference today and far into the future.

Sincerely,

Program accreditation is the ultimate indication of quality for children’s programs. Accreditation provides after-school professionals with benchmarks of quality to guide program planning, implementation and evaluation.

The Capital District Child Care Council works to improve the quality of care offered to children in our community. Unfortunately, the Council is unable to offer all of our programmatic support, especially critically-important training and mentoring, for free to deserving child care centers. The Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region recognizes this need and has granted funds for technical assistance and professional development opportunities to a variety of programs over the past four years. The ultimate goal of this intensive technical assistance and professional development is for the programs to achieve Accreditation through AfterSchool Works! NY.

Accreditation fosters competent, caring and qualified child care staff. Accreditation can also guide families in making informed choices about after-school care for their children. The success rate of this model is high throughout New York State.

A team approach is the key to the success of the accreditation model and is supported by a trained Accreditation Coach that is approved by AfterSchool Works! NY. The coach and program staff observe the program and create an action plan which guides improvements needed to achieve accreditation. The time spent with the

coach allows staff to give input and feel invested in their work.

In 2013, the Community Foundation is funding two programs for Council Educators. Both programs have made changes including the addition of learning centers that support math and science and the introduction of a variety of cultural experiences.

The centers that have worked with an accreditation coach and applied for accreditation have been successful, including the three programs supported by the Community Foundation.

Since 2008, the Community Foundation has supported the Council’s quality improvement work at organizations including:

• Arbor Hill Community Center

• Capital District YMCA• North Albany Academy• Trinity AllianceThe Foundation has also supported the Council's educational workshops at child care centers throughout Montgomery County.

Generations of G

ivingSince the formation of the Standish Family Fund in 2003, the Standish family has overseen more than 300 grants to nonprofit organizations totaling nearly $2 million.

While this number alone is impressive, it is even more impressive to take a deeper look at how the Standishes make grant decisions: it’s a true family affair.

The Standish Family Fund, administered by the Community Foundation, was created in 2003 with an initial investment of stock from Albany International’s former board chair, J. Spencer Standish. Spencer, along with his son John and daughter Christine, made up the Community Foundation’s original Standish Family Fund advisory board. Christine was elected president at the first meeting and continues to serve in this role today. Since 2003, spouses and three members of the third generation have joined the board. “We work hard to include all family members and come to complete agreement on every grant,” said Christine Standish. “This is not an easy process, but through it, we have learned so much about each other, our community, and how best to work as a group. Our family bond has grown stronger, and our community has benefited from our work. It’s a win-win.”

The Standish Family Fund supports organizations as diverse as the Addictions Care Center of Albany, Habitat for Humanity, the Hudson Valley Community College Foundation, the Northeast Kidney Foundation and the Scotia-Glenville Children’s Museum. Whether through mini-grants of $600 for much-needed furniture for the Troy Area United Ministries or $100,000 for capital improvements for the YMCA Capital District, the Standish Family Fund has strategically invested in their community to make life better for countless children, adults and families.

In recent years, the third generation of Standishes has taken a more active role in grant-making. Starting in 2010, the Standish Family Fund began offering mini-grants of $1,000 or less for education programs (such as language arts, history and recreation) and youth-focused programming (after-school programs, recreation). The third generation, ranging in age from 10 years and up, evaluate grant submissions and recommend programs for funding. “G3—the third generation—is learning the needs in our community, how to work together and the effort it takes to run an organization well,” said Christine. “These are invaluable life lessons for everyone, regardless of age.”

“My brother and I were raised to support our community,” continued Christine. “It’s

our privilege and responsibility to pass that tradition of support on to our children. We are deeply grateful to the Community Foundation for making it easy for our family to pass on our philanthropic legacy to the next generation while investing in the communities we love so much.”

A Donor Story:Why We Support the Community Foundationby Lawrence and Marie Shore

The Capital Region is indeed a very exceptional area when one considers its history, the large presence of universities and colleges, the varied cultural offerings, and the nonprofit organizations serving the needs of the communities. We have benefited greatly from living in the area and having access to these resources.

In order to support local organizations, we established a donor advised fund with the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region. The Foundation was established in 1968 by (among others) C. Jordan Vail, a community leader, benefactor and friend.

The Community Foundation makes substantial contributions annually to many qualified nonprofits. We know the Foundation performs its fiduciary role to invest donor contributions with care, trust and responsibility.

When we make donations through the Community Foundation, we know from our years of experience with the Foundation that it processes donations promptly and provides immediate confirmation. The employees and Board are responsive and active in staying abreast of needs and trends in our region. It is a pleasure to do business with them and to be associated with an organization dedicated to preserving the Capital Region’s charitable assets and addressing its needs.

Since the creation of the Lawrence and Marie Shore Donor Advised Fund in 2002, the Fund has given more than $120,000 through 177 grants. The Lawrence and Marie Shore Donor Advised Fund has supported organizations such as the Albany Institute of History & Art, Albany Pro Musica, Opera Saratoga and WMHT Educational Telecommunications.

“We’re so pleased to work with Larry and Marie Shore,” said Karen Bilowith, President and CEO, the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region. “Their generosity is inspiring. Their commitment to informed, targeted charitable giving allows them to have a measurable impact for the organizations that mean the most to them.”

Page 9: 2012-2013 Report to the Community

The Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region and Union Graduate College (UGC) joined forces in 2012 to present the Nonprofit Leadership Development Institute, a program in which nonprofit leaders meet monthly to explore common issues, share ideas and develop organizational partnerships.

The creation of the Institute emerged during the development of UGC’s Robb Center for Principled Leadership. “We interviewed local philanthropists and leaders and asked them what kind of programming they thought was needed,” said Laura Schweitzer, PhD., president of Union Graduate College. “We heard clearly that there was a need for developing the management capacity of nonprofit leaders.”

Each year, the Nonprofit Leadership Development Institute brings together 20-30 leaders from a single industry. The 2013 Leadership Development Institute class comprised leaders from arts organizations including Empire State Youth Orchestras, the Linda—WAMC’s Performing Arts Studio, Proctors, the Museum of Innovation and Science (miSci), Capital Repertory Theatre and Troy Savings Bank Music Hall.

At their monthly classes, participants in the Nonprofit Leadership Development Institute are trained in topics including leadership development, project planning and management, organizational finances, team management and human resources. Participants also work on a capstone project, through which cross-agency teams evaluate their organizations and discuss areas of possible collaboration or partnership.

“This has been a true partnership with the Community Foundation,” continued Schweitzer. “Because of their relationships with nonprofits, the Foundation has been able to recommend participants, and help identify projects and goals.”

“Pulling professionals together in this way is very beneficial,” said participant Sara Torrey, Development and Marketing Specialist for the Empire State Youth Orchestras. “Larger organizations can help smaller organizations, smaller organizations can bring a new mindset to larger ones. The fact that it’s all done in the spirit of collaboration means that we’re able to get to know our compatriots in the industry and share concerns and successes. Because of this program, I’m having conversations now that I wouldn’t have had a year ago.”

Regional AffiliatesThe Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region proudly supports the work of the Bethlehem Community Foundation, founded in 2011, and the Niskayuna Community Foundation, founded in 1999. Both organizations enhance the strength and vitality of their communities through philanthropy and advocacy. The affiliates each operate largely independently, under the guidance of their boards of directors, but benefit from the Foundation’s administrative assistance and strategic guidance.

Education Enrichment Funds Investing in education benefits the entire Capital Region. Several communities, including Ballston Spa, Coxsackie-Athens, Greenville and North Colonie, support their school districts through funds administered by the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region. This partnership allows each community to raise tax-deductible donations, which are stewarded by the Foundation and then allocated to support projects supporting local students.

Private FoundationsA number of private foundations benefit from the flexibility, transparency and expertise of working with the Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region to allocate grants. Several foundations, such as the Bender Family Foundation and the John D. Picotte Family Foundation, contract with the Community Foundation for grantmaking guidance, knowledge of nonprofit organizations and administrative support. With this help, foundations are able to generously support their communities and causes without being slowed down by administrative details.

Community Impact GrantsThanks to the Community Foundation’s close involvement with our nonprofit community, we are able to respond to our community's changing needs through grants from our Community Impact Fund. This fund allows the Foundation to strategically allocate funds to nonprofit agencies and programs that have the greatest impact on our community.

Competitive GrantsThe Foundation welcomes applications from nonprofit organizations for a variety of targeted grant funds throughout the year. Applications are evaluated by volunteer committees composed of fund advisors or appointed community representatives.

Designated Funds/Agency EndowmentsA number of endowed funds, including agency endowments, are carefully invested by the Community Foundation, providing annual income to designated nonprofit organizations each year in perpetuity.

Donor Advised FundsDonors work with the Foundation to direct funds to agencies, communities or causes close to their hearts. The Foundation’s staff works with the donor to ensure grants are given to agencies that are fiscally responsible and compliant with all IRS regulations.

ScholarshipsEach year, the Community Foundation works with scholarship donors, businesses and educational institutions to help high school students, college students and professionals pursue their educational goals. This partnership with our donors allowed the Foundation to award nearly $325,000 in scholarships in 2012.

The Community Foundation works with donors and committees to award grants and scholarships year-round. The Foundation’s Board of Directors provides oversight and final approval on all allocations. Thanks to the support of a caring community of donors, the Community Foundation was able to award nearly $4.5 million in grants and scholarships in 2012—our most generous year yet!

Page 32: 2012-2013 Report to the Community

Our VisionThe Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region was founded in 1968 by a group of prominent local residents who shared a belief that by collectively investing our charitable resources, we could grow them over time to benefit our community far into the future.

Today, the Foundation has more than $58 million in assets, and is able to distribute nearly $4.5 million each year in scholarships to local students and grants and donations to nonprofit organizations.

As the needs of the greater Capital Region become more complex, the Foundation is proud of its role as a leader in responding to needs. Together with our Board of Directors and the support of our community, we look forward to working with donors, leaders and volunteers to respond to issues with flexibility, creativity and efficiency.

Our MissionThe Community Foundation for the Greater Capital Region strengthens our community by attracting charitable endowments both large and small, maximizing benefits to donors, making effective grants, and providing leadership to address community needs.
