Harrisonburg and Rockingham County are set in the Great Appalachian Valley, nestled between the Alleghany and

Blue Ridge Mountains. Our area offers a wealth of outdoor recreation, cultural attractions, Civil War history, luxurious

accommodations, and a thriving downtown.

Trendy, locally-owned restaurants, museums, and art galleries connect historic downtown Harrisonburg to James Madison

University, creating one of Virginia’s first designated Arts & Cultural Districts. This 10-block walk passes by the Virginia Quilt Museum, Explore More Discovery Museum, Harrisonburg Farmers Market, Oasis Fine Art & Craft, Valley Turnpike Museum,

and parts of two National Historic Districts.

In Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, and the surrounding areas, there are eight designated National Historic Districts:

Harrisonburg Downtown and Harrisonburg Old Town Historic Districts, Port Republic, Bridgewater, Dayton, Massanetta Springs,

Singers Glen, and the Skyline Drive Historic Districts. These designated areas are hot spots for self-guided walking tours.

Uptown is filled with national favorites so whatever you came for, you’ll leave with that and more! If you’re looking for an

eco-friendly vacation, you’ll find it in Harrisonburg. Our city was the first in Virginia to offer guests access to an electric car

charge! Many city roads are open to bicyclists to cruise along with motorists. You’re invited to make the Hardesty-Higgins

House Visitor Center your first stop on a trip to remember. Our travel specialists are standing by to help you navigate your

Harrisonburg vacation.

is leading the way in green

transportation. Some city

streets have markings known

as “sharrows” - indicating

that the lane is used for

both bicyclists and motorists

to share. Harrisonburg was

honored by the League of American Bicyclists and named a Bronze Award Level Bicycle Friendly

Community. The city was also recognized as a Bronze Level Ride Center by the International

Mountain Bicycling Association. Multiple levels of road and mountain bicycling trails are

supported by a variety of local and regional businesses offering quality products and services.

Check out Rocktown Trails at Hillandale Park, which offers three different levels of trails to appeal

Commemorating the Sesquicentennial of the American Civil War Harrisonburg, Rockingham County, and the

Shenandoah Valley played significant roles

during the American Civil War. Harrisonburg

was at the crossroads of two major highways:

the Valley Turnpike (modern-day Rt. 11) and

the Rockingham Turnpike (modern-day Rt. 33).

The city was also located about 25 miles north

of a huge Confederate rail and supply center in

Staunton. At the time, Rockingham County was

one of the most prosperous agricultural counties in the nation. The region including Harrisonburg and Rockingham County was

known as the “The Breadbasket of the Confederacy” resulting in a prime location for the struggle between Union and Confederate

forces. Make Stonewall Jackson’s Valley Campaign your personal history getaway with thirty trail sites within a 20 mile radius. Some

trail sites include the Turner Ashby Monument, Court Square & Springhouse, The Coaling, and Woodbine Cemetery. Civil War trail

sites include two battles fought in the Shenandoah Valley-Cross Keys & Port Republic. See where General Turner Ashby lost his life,

where a hospital housed wounded soldiers, and where General Nathanial Banks led the Union in the burning of the Shenandoah

Valley. Pick up your copy of the new “Battles on the Home Front” driving tour map and brochure at the Hardesty-Higgins House

Visitor Center. Begin in “historic downtown” and take the journey of a lifetime in an afternoon.

Places to Stay Harrisonburg and Rockingham County make

a perfect week long vacation or comfortable stop-over for family travel or

group tours. Check out our countless hotels, refurbished historic homes, and

Inn, locally owned and operated for seventy five years, offers decks with a view, outdoor swimming pool and a complete country

breakfast buffet. You can also take in the splendor of our area at Courtyard by Marriott, located just blocks from James Madison

University and featuring a 24-hour snack market. We also offer camping, cabins and pet-friendly accommodations. Watch our
