    Changes This Year

    A suite of major changes have been made to increase emphasis on CORE chemistry mastery

    Lectures:

    IIIA compulsory lectures exam schedule: 3 courses to be examined in May (see later); Personal developmentweek at mid point in Autumn term (cf. Reading week)

    IIIB elective lectures: 6 courses to be selected

    Labs:

    New 4 week programmes running in either Autumn or Spring term depending on when your project isscheduled

    Fewer, re-designed and longer experiments and new assessment procedurese.g. Pico-spin NMR

    Increased credit weighting (5 ECTS/lab)

    Coursework:

    Deadline/workload planner

    Plagiarism awareness workshops beforeChristmas Timing of literature report brought forward in year: titles allocated 9th Nov, reports submitted 18th Feb, and

    decreased credit weighting (5 ECTS)

    Increased scope and credit weighting to oral exam (3 ECTS)

    There is an annual SOLE lecturer prize (Prof Alan Armstrong 2011-12 recipient).

    EXAM FEEDBACK

    Provisional IIIA exam grades will be posted to Blackboard ASAP.

    Markers of all questions will write a paragraph summarising performance on their question. These will be

    collated & posted on Blackboard with the results and a histogram showing the overall performance of thecohort on that paper (not individual questions).

    Purpose?

    To encourage mastery of core concepts the compulsory course to date (i.e. I, II, and IIIA) As practice at thinking synoptically and expressing yourself

    As practice to help if called for a degree viva at the end of the year by the external examiners

    Scope?

    All core chemistry (i.e. NOT ancillaries)
