2012-13

One of the advantages of starting a swimming and diving program at the University of Idaho was the school’s swimming facilities received instant upgrades.

Since the program was reinstated in 2004, the university has spent nearly $2.2 million renovating the University of Idaho Swim and Dive Center.

The Center features two 25-yard pools. A four-lane shallow pool on the west end serves as an ideal warm-up pool and is used for community swimming lessons and university swimming courses.

An eight-lane all-deep water pool is directly to the side of the shallow one. The pool is all deep water and sits below the seating gallery.

The pool is the team’s primary practice and competition pool and accommodates both swimming and diving events at home meets.

In addition to the pool complex, the Vandals have a dryland training center for their divers and their locker room has been completely remodeled.

The Center’s air and water fi ltration systems received massive upgrades prior to the team’s fi rst season. The starting blocks were replaced during that renovation and in 2008, two diving boards were added to accommodate the team’s new diving program.

The locker rooms were renovated in 2009.The Vandals aren’t the only ones to enjoy the Center’s recent

upgrades.The pool accomm-odates 1,200 users a week, including

university students and employees and Moscow community members.

When Mark Sowa was hired as the University of Idaho swim coach in 2011, he commended the athletic department for revitalizing the program, which had beend dormant for 22 years when it

was reinstated in 2004. He’s doing his part to continue that upward progress. At the 2012-13 Western Athletic Con-

ference meet, Sowa’s team had its best fi nish (a fourth) with three individuals – coming away with four individual titles. Not only did Paige Hunt earn the Diver of the Year award but she won the 3-meter event. Rachel Millet, just a sophomore, captured the 200 IM

and 200 freestyle races, while freshman Jamie Sterbis was the winner of the 200 fl y.All told in 2012-13, the Vandals broke 12 school records – six

individual, three relays, and all three diving disciplines. They wound up No. 25 in the mid-major poll at season’s end.

In Sowa’s fi rst year as a Vandal, the team also broke 12 school records, won three meets and were ranked as high as

25th in the country among mid-major programs. They claimed seventh place in the University of Houston Cougar Classic and were named to the Scholar All America Team by the College

Swimming Coaches Association of America. In addition, Millet won three WAC Swimmer of the Week awards and diver Paige Hunt won two WAC Diver of the Week awards. Idaho is not the fi rst program time Sowa guided to immediate succes at a college program. Sowa led the Wagner program to many milestones in his three seasons as the head coach. Sowa's swimmers set 23 school records, two conference records, earned 12 All-NEC honors and the program's fi rst NEC Swimmer of the Year award. Sowa also coached the program's fi rst NCAA provisional qualifi er. Wagner owned a combined 15-15 overall record and went 10-4 in the Northeast Conference under Sowa, fi nishing in the top three in the NEC Championship meet all three seasons, including a second-place fi nish in 2008-09. Sowa's student-athletes excelled outside of the pool as well, as his swimmers combined for 37 NEC All-Academic honors in his three years.Before taking over at Wagner, Sowa spent the previous 10 years building his coaching resume. From 2007-08 he was the assistant men's swim coach at Harvard University. Before that he was the coach at the Barracuda Swim Club in Nassau, Bahamas from 2005-07 where he won the Bahamas National Swimming Championship. Sowa was the assistant then interim head coach at Maryland from 2004-05 after stints as an assistant at Richmond and Brown University from 1999-2004. Sowa graduated from The American University with his bachelor's degree in History and Philosophy before earning his mas-ter's degree from Brown in American History.

Oates is a 2011 graduate of Oakland University where she not only excelled in athletics but academics.

At Idaho, she made an immediate impact. Junior Paige Hunt was chosen the Western Ath-letic Conference Diver of the Year for the 2012-13 season. Hunt continually rewrote the Idaho diving record book and won the WAC 3-meter event. But Hunt isn’t Oates only success. The younger divers have blossomed under her guidance and are con-sistently improving and scoring for the Vandals.

Oates was a two-time honorable mention academic All-American and qualifi ed for zone competition four times in both the 1- and 3-meter events. She also was recognized on the 2010 Summit's League's Commissioner's List of Academic Excellence and was a 2010 Summit League Distinguished Scholar.

She comes to Idaho from Ohio Northern University, where she served as the recruiting coordinator.

"For four years Chelsea was the face of Oakland diving," head coach Mark Sowa said. "She was a fi erce competitor and a four-time NCAA qualifi er. She is bringing that success as an athlete here to Moscow and we couldn't be happier.

"Chelsea knows what it takes to make the jump to the national level which is what we are committed to here with Vandals diving. Her enthusiasm for the sport is contagious and I am confi dent that we just hired the perfect coach for the job."

Cameron brings a high level of coaching experience to Idaho after spending last season as a volunteer assistant at the University of Michigan and several years as a club swim coach in the area.

“We are thrilled to have Scott join the Vandal family,” Sowa said. “He has been exposed to a very high level of swimming the last three years in Ann Arbor and has worked with two of the most respected coaches in our sport.”

As an assistant at Michigan, Cameron was part of a top-25 women’s swim and dive program. He worked with the backstroke group and built a sprint training program for the Wolverines. He has also worked with the Club Wolverine Elite swim team since 2009, as well as Nike Swim Camps in the area. He spent one season as a student assistant coach at Grand Valley State Uni-versity, where he was a varsity swimmer for three seasons from 2005-08.

Cameron coached 21 athletes who competed at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials and multiple Olympians, as well as several senior national qualifi ers and one NCAA qualifi er with Club Wolverine Elite and the University of Michigan.

Cameron’s experience includes on-deck coaching, technique and stroke development, video analysis, dry-land conditioning and the implementation of training programs. In addition to work with collegiate and senior swimmers, Cameron has also coached and overseen youth swimming camps.

Cameron is a 2009 graduate of Grand Valley State with a bachelor’s degree in Movement Science with an emphasis on coach-ing. He is pursuing a master’s degree in Business Administration.

2012-13

This season will go down as one of the best in program history as the Idaho Swimming and Diving team wraps up the 2012-13 season and looks ahead to 2013-14.

“I’m very proud of the progress we made this year,” Idaho coach Mark Sowa said. “I think it was arguably the best season in Idaho swimming and diving his-tory, at least in the WAC.

“We made signifi cant progress. We went from seventh place last year (at the WAC Championship meet) to fourth place this year and we increased our point total by over 100 points.”

This season was one of many fi rsts for the Idaho team. The Vandals won three events at the WAC Championships, Paige Hunt was Diver of the Year in the WAC, and they had two NCAA B cut times – all of which are fi rsts for the pro-gram.

“Last year they realized that they can compete at a very high level and this year they went in knowing not only can they compete at a high level but they also can win things,” Sowa said.

This year, the Vandals broke 12 school records making a total of 25 broken re-cords over the last two years. Also, they fi nished the season ranked 25th in the www.CollegeSwimming.com mid-major poll.

“I think people are noticing what we’re doing,” Sowa said. “We’re not done yet. We have a lot more goals as a program but this was a four-year plan and we’ve made some signifi cant progress. We’re happy with that.

“We took a couple weeks to pat ourselves on the back for a job well done but now we’ve turned the page and we’re going to get better this spring.”

Sowa saw signifi cant progress this year in the team’s confi dence, which he says has been a major factor in its recent success.

“It’s confi dence in how they train; confi dence with a new coaching staff, and it’s confi dence in knowing each player has each other’s back,” Sowa said. “I think we make a mistake thinking it’s an individual sport. We talk about the team a lot and helping each other out in good times and in bad. I think they’ve started to fi gure that stuff out.”

During the offseason, Sowa and the team are looking to improve even more and Sowa says that they’re well on their way to do so.

“If we aren’t trying to get better we’re getting worse,” Sowa said. “The neat part about this time of year is they have to decide to be at the pool; there’s only so much we can ask of them. They have made the decision to really embrace the full schedule and training hard this spring. I think they’re doing a great job.”

There’s more ahead for the Vandals – even before they take on the 2013-14 season.

“This summer, Rachel Millet and Jamie Sterbis will be representing Idaho in the U.S. Open,” Sowa said. “We’re looking forward to it.”
