IN LOVING MEMORY OF

JAKE GRECCOONCE A PIRATE,

ALWAYS A PIRATE

Last season, the men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams teamed up in support of Jake ‘The Hero” Grecco, a 7-year-old boy from Phillipsburg, New Jersey, who was diagnosed with Gliomatosis Cerebri, a malignant brain tumor. The Pirates wore grey caps all season long in recognition of his fight and paid him a surprise visit at school. Jake inspired everyone him with his strength and bravery, imparting those qualities onto his new friends in blue and white. Although he ultimately lost his battle, he lives on in the minds and hearts of all those who were lucky enough to get to know him.

SEASON PREVIEW

2012 SETON HALL WOMEN’S SWIM & DIVE MEDIA GUIDE

During its first 12 seasons under the stewardship of head coach Ron Farina, the Seton Hall swimming & diving program has established a standard of excellence both in and out of the pool.

With Farina at the helm, the Pirates have set new school records in 36 different events, seven of which were re-written last year. SHU has also captured four individual BIG EAST championships during his tenure. Former swimmer Kevin Webster (’11) took home three of those titles, capping his career by earning BIG EAST Most Outstanding Swimmer honors in 2011.

In the classroom, the Pirate program is among the nation’s elite as both the men’s and women’s squads earned their 12th consecutive CSCAA Team Scholar All-America Awards in 2011-12, with the men’s team posting the 12th highest overall GPA among all qualifying schools. Between the two teams, the program also produced 32 BIG EAST Academic All-Stars a year ago, pushing the program’s total to 264 under Farina’s guidance.

“I think we have been able to find a nice balance here,” said Farina. “Being in the upper-tier of the conference and right there with some of the best programs in America is something we are very proud of. We have proven that we can compete at a high level and perform in the classroom at the same time.”

When it comes to competition, a seasoned core of accomplished veterans coupled with the arrival of one of the largest and deepest recruiting classes in program history has the Pirates poised to continue the tradition of success in 2012-13. Coming off a year in which SHU sent 17 members of the women’s team to the conference championship meet, Farina believes his team has the potential to take a large step forward in the upcoming season.

“Last year we graduated a strong group of contributors,” continued Farina. “That group had a lot of success here and contributed to a couple school records but we have been able to offset those losses by bringing in the largest recruiting class in program history.”

The incoming class features 10 student-athletes who come to South Orange with experience in a number of different disciplines.

Canadian imports Rae Congdon (Ottawa, Ontario) and Leah Mayer (London, Ontario) are expected to solidify the team’s freestyle efforts as will Isabelle Alario (Hermosa Beach, Calif.). A high school All-American as a senior, Cora Meehan (Noblesville, Ind.) will team with senior Andrea Shuba (Pittsburgh, Pa.) to give the Pirates a formidable 1-2 punch in backstroke events.

Megan Mallon (Glen Mills, Pa.) will make an impact in breaststroke while Katie Adams (Linwood, N.J.), Alexa Santis (Ijamsville, Md.) (Back/Free), Gabi Levine (Garwood, N.J.), Kelly Miller (State College, Pa.) (Butterfly/Back) and will each provide depth in a number of different strokes.

Long Island native Gabby Signorelli (Massapequa, N.Y.) joins the squad after setting several diving records at Massapequa High School.

“The girls that we have brought in have instantly made us better,” lauded Farina. “Not only have BIG EAST cuts but they have the abil-ity to score for us as well. With them, they are already far along enough in their development that now it is more about fine-tuning and keeping them focused.”

Aside from the addition of a promising class, the women’s squad boasts a multitude of returning competitors whose names are littered throughout the school record books. One notable returnee is Andrea Shuba, one of the most heralded swimmers in program history. Shuba holds both individual backstroke records (100 and 200-yard) and was a part of two of the fastest relay teams SHU has ever

Shuba is joined by fellow seniors Marielle O’Connor (Allentown, Pa.), Brenna O’Keefe (New Hyde, N.Y.) and Alie Zelenky (Mechan-icsburg, Pa.) as the team’s most veteran members. All four seniors have placed their name on the school record board at least once, and head into their final seasons looking to improve on those marks.

“We have a great group of seniors this year,” said Farina. “All four have them have been important contributors who have improved tremendously throughout their time here. Andrea has been fantastic over her first three seasons. Marielle has worked really hard and had some nice drops in her times and Alie has put herself in a position to do the same. Both of them, as well as Brenna have already been a part of record-setting relay teams and I think they could break those times this year. Brenna also just missed out in scoring in the mile at BIG EAST last year so I think our seniors can accomplish big things for us this year.”

A loaded junior class features five student-athletes who will factor prominently into the Pirates’ success this season. Multiple record holders Kerrie Kolackovsky (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and Jane Ehret (Florida, N.Y.) headline the group. Kolackovsky and Ehret represented Seton Hall at last year’s USA Winter Nationals and look to continue their progression in their third year of competi-tion. As underclassmen, they wasted no time in placing their stamp on the program. Kolackovsky has set the standard in the 1,650-yard freestyle as well as the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke events while Ehret holds the fastest 400-yard individual medley time in school history. The two also teamed as part of the record-setting 800-yard freestyle relay team as freshmen.

”Kerrie and Jane are poised to take the next step this year,” said Farina. “We might put Kerrie in the IM a little more this year because she is so talented in each stroke, so maybe we’ll find some-thing there. Jane is someone who has been a consistent performer for us and I don’t expect that to change.”

Kate Dwyer (Freehold, N.J.) and Kelly Markwell (Old Bridge, N.J.) form the other half of a potent quartet of third-year swimmers for The Hall. Both Dwyer and Markwell built upon solid freshman campaigns by breaking multiple personal records as sophomores. Head-ing into year three in blue and white, Farina feels that the two are on the cusp of emerging as forces within the conference.

“I have been very pleased with how Kate and Kelly have come along in their first two years,” Farina stated. “I know Kate’s going to give me everything she has every time I pencil her in. Kelly was on three record-setting relay teams for us at the conference last year and just missed out on making the top-16 in the 100-fly. We are a very dangerous team when they are on their games.”

Rounding out the junior class is Katie Riley (Newburgh, N.Y.), a standout from the diving board for the Pirates over the last two sea-sons. Riley made her second straight trip to the BIG EAST Championships, last season, competing in the one-meter, three-meter and platform events. From the one-meter distance, Riley placed 18th in the preliminary round, narrowly missing out on advancing to the final round.

“Katie’s a big part of what we do as a team,” said Farina. “In dual meets, she scores some vital points from us. I think she is definitely going to be a factor at this year’s BIG EAST Championship after just falling outside the cut for the final last year. I think Katie and Gabby [Signorelli] complement each other very nicely and together they are a very capable duo.”

Riley, Shuba, O’Connor and O’Keefe will serve as team captains for 2012-13.

Sarah Dougherty (Waterford, N.Y.) and Megan Mostoller (Cheshire, Conn.) comprise the Pirates’ sophomore contingent. A pair of BIG EAST Championship qualifiers from a year ago, both Dougherty and Mostoller played integral roles for SHU in dual meets as fresh-men, swimming to a number of top-five individual finishes.

“I expect Sarah and Megan to continue improving,” Farina said. “They are a year more seasoned and with that experience under their belts, I think they will elevate their performance this year.”

“I think we have a nice mix of talented upperclassmen and some freshmen who already to contribute immediately,” continued Farina. “I think we are going to surprise some people with how deep our team is. We don’t just have depth, we have quality depth at every position. I think we could have at least eight individual scorers at the BIG EAST Championship from this group.”

SEASON PREVIEW

A challenging schedule stands between the Pirates and the 2013 BIG EAST Championships, featuring showdowns with some familiar foes as well as conference rivals. The team will also swim in two in-season invitational-style events.

Last season, the SHU women registered a 6-5 record in dual meet competition.

The 2012-13 slate kicks off on Tuesday, Oct. 16 when SHU hosts a head-to-head matchup with Montclair State. Other home dates include Providence (Sat, Nov. 3) and Marist on Saturday, Jan. 26, a meet that will serve as Senior Day for the Pirates.

SHU will travel to take on Rider (Oct. 18), Iona (Oct. 30), Saint Peter’s (Nov. 9) in one-on-one matchups prior to their winter training trip to Puerto Rico. BIG EAST adversaries Villanova (Jan. 15) and Connecticut (Jan. 19) await the Pirates in head-to-head competition after the break.

The schedule also includes a trip to Baltimore, Md. to swim against Drexel, Lafayette and hosts Loyola (MD) in a quad meet (Oct. 27). The Pirates will also take part in the Patriot Invitational (Nov. 15-17) and the Bucknell Invitational (Feb. 2) before closing the regular season with a tri-meet against Georgetown and Rutgers on Saturday, Feb. 9 in Piscataway.

“We changed up our schedule a little bit this year,” said Farina. “It’s always a good meet when we swim against Rider and it serves as a barometer for us early in the season. We host Providence in our BIG EAST opener, a meet that we are very much looking forward to. The Patriot is a great event for us because it gives us a chance to rest the kids and give them a chance to hit some cuts in some different events. We’ll head to Puerto Rico in the winter and continue our training. In the second half of the year, we’ll really need to be on our game to beat teams like UConn, Villanova and Marist. UConn is a meet that gives the kids a good feel for what to expect at the conference championships, but we go up against a number of BIG EAST teams during that stretch which should be a good test for us.”

Helping Farina guide the Pirates through the demanding schedule will be a pair of second-year assistants in Kara Lennon (’98) and diving coach P.J. Hughes (’10).

Lennon and Hughes both previously competed for the Pirates and each joined the coaching staff prior to the 2011-12 season.

“I think Kara and PJ both took a lot away from their first year,” said Farina. “They both competed here but it is different being on the other side. Now, they know what the competition is like and they know what they are up against. On the recruiting trail, they both worked extremely hard and their time and effort really paid off. They have learned a lot since coming on. As a staff, we continue to grow and I think that is a big part of moving forward as a program.”

Another former Pirate, Andrew Le Blanc (’06), also returns to the program for his second season as volunteer assistant coach.

Following the regular season, SHU will head to the Midwest for the conference championships. The 2013 BIG EAST Championships will be held at the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind. on Feb. 27-Mar. 2. The Pirates will be looking to improve on last season’s 10th place team finish.

“the BIG EAST meet is a week or so later than it usually is, giving us some extra time to prepare and focus,” Farina stated. “IUPUI is a very prestigious pool; it’s sort of like playing in the coliseum in Los Angeles. It’s also a very fast pool and serves as a great venue for a championship meet.”

“This year we are looking for that second swim at BIG EAST,” continued Farina. “Qualifying is nice, but if we’re in a relay we want to set a record and in individual races, we’re looking to score. I know this team has the ability to get those things done for us.”

Ron Farina enters his 13th season as head coach of the Seton Hall men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams and is coming off one of the most successful seasons of his tenure. Last year Seton Hall saw more than 85 percent of its swimmers qualify for BIG EAST Championship competition. The women re-wrote five school records while the men broke two, and posted a 9-2 dual meet record.

Each program also took home a 12th consecutive CSCAA Team Scholar All-America Award, with the men ranking 12th in the entire nation in team GPA. The Pirates also produced 32 BIG EAST Academic All-Stars, pushing its total to 264 under Farina’s guidance.

In 2010-11, senior Kevin Webster became the first student-athlete in program history to compete at the NCAA Championships. Farina also coached the men’s team to a sixth-place showing at the BIG EAST Championship, the highest in program history, while the women’s team came in ninth, its best finish since 2005.

Webster also became the first swimmer in school history to be named Most Outstanding Male Swimmer at the BIG EAST Championships after winning the 400-yard individual med-ley and 200-yard backstroke conference titles.

Webster is not the only Pirate to capture a BIG EAST title under Farina as Jack Leavitt (2005,100-Backstroke) also accomplished the feat.

winter training trip 2011-12pirates in

The training trip is an important part of our season. In the grind of the winter, it is a nice change of pace to get somewhere sunny as we continue to work towards the championship season. Our team gets to bond and enjoy the surroundings, but at the same time they are working towards elevating their performance.

Page 40: 2012-13 Seton Hall Women's Swimming and Diving Media Guide

Fellow Pirates,

Hello from Washington D.C.!

Summer has begun and I have already started my internship at the International Law Institute, which has taken me to our nation’s capital.

Over my past three years at Seton Hall my interest in international development and law has increased from exposure in several of my classes. I found many developing countries encounter issues because they are deficient in processes such as drafting of laws and the designing of their economic and government policies.

At this time in my academic career, I eventually want to be involved in public policy development in emerging economies. This can involve legal, economic, and social ele-ments.

I want to pursue this area of expertise because I am intrigued by why certain efforts and policies effectively promote good and efficient governance through the rule of law and why some end up failing.

During the first week of my internship there was a lot of training, which wasn’t very surprising because I have to learn the technical aspects of the organization in order to move forward. One of the most important things I have learned so far is how to navigate through their databases containing over 40,000 contacts!

I have also already been exposed to the structure of their materials for the seminars they conduct. Currently, they are running a seminar on Contract Administration. I’ve been able to sit in a few classes over the first week and I feel as if the seminar offers information that is a great supplement to what you learn in a college class. I will have the opportunity to sit in some other classes as well and I am especially looking forward to the seminar on Legislative Drafting. I feel it will allow me to expand my knowledge in international law and learn some of the specifics regarding how laws are drafted.

In the office, I have begun to work directly with my advisor, Gerhard, in a marketing process called Open Internet Marketing. I am focusing in finding contacts in emerging and middle income countries in South East Asia. These contacts can be other organizations, ministries, corporations, or people, as long as they work within the general area of capital markets. There are two other forms of marketing database building they use, Past Participants and a program called DEVEX, but I like my focus the most because it requires more creativity in finding contacts.

Initially, I was shocked at how small the main staff of the organization is. I’ve worked with the three Program Administrators very closely and talked with the Executive Di-rector on a personal level. When asked if expansion was on the horizon, Executive Director Kim Phan responded that they want to ensure that their work meets the highest standards, and a small organization ensures that it happens.

I was also shocked at the outreach and scope that a smaller organization like the ILI has. In the first seminar they were running when I arrived, about half of the partici-pants were from Kenya, along with others from Uganda, Ghana, Armenia, and Papua New Guinea.

The ILI also has an extensive teaching staff with over 400 members. These people are mostly lawyers at well-known firms, with some other distinguished members who work at the World Bank, US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, the Export-Import Bank, the U. S. Federal Reserve, and the Office of Federal Procurement Policy.

It is interesting that these people keep coming back to volunteer their time to teach these seminars because they truly believe in in ILI’s mission. I think the ILI’s small, yet focused approach to educating people from developing and emerging economies has proven to be an effective one and I am excited to be a part of it.

Overall, from my experience as an intern at an independent, non-profit organization I hope to expand my knowledge in what steps can be taken to improve the perfor-mance of government agencies and public accountability in the government. I also hope to gain professional experience from working with experts within the field and insight into how a research and educational institution like the International Law Institute functions on a daily basis.

Well, that’s all for now, see you soon!

Go Pirates!

Andrea

AN EFFORT SPEARHEADED BY ASSISTANT COACH KARA LENNON, SETON HALL SWIMMING & DIVING HAS TEAMED WITH

THE MAKE A SPLASH FOUNDATION FOR THE UPCOMING YEAR

Below is a recap of Lennon’s visit to a Make A Splash Foundation event this summer.

The Seton Hall University Department of Athletics and swimming & diving program showed their support for local Olympian Cullen Jones at a pep rally held Sunday, July 29, at the Cullen Jones Aquatic Center in Irvington, N.J.

Jones, who grew up in Irvington before attending North Carolina State University, won a gold medal in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and has already added a silver medal in the same event at the 2012 London games. The Irvington Municipal Pool was renamed in his honor in 2008.

Seton Hall University Professor of Organic Chemistry John Sowa, Ph.D., became involved with the Cullen Jones Aquatic Center several months ago by volunteering through the Make a Splash Foundation, a swimming lesson and safety program sponsored by the USA Swimming Foundation. As it turns, Jones is program’s chief athletic representative and also happens to be from Irvington.

Sowa worked with a number of officials from the Township of Irvington, including Mayor Wayne Smith, to coordinate a pep rally supporting Jones as he goes for gold at the London Olympics.

Sowa also met with Seton Hall assistant men’s and women’s swimming coach Kara Lennon, about representing the Pirates at the event, which she attended along with Seton Hall Coordinator of Student-Athlete Development and Special Projects, Melanie Calderwood.

“I have to thank Kara and Melanie for all of the help that they gave and all of their enthusiasm,” Sowa said. “It was great to have some friends from Seton Hall there. The pep rally did a great job of cheering on Cullen Jones and also bringing attention to the Irvington Aquatic swimming program, encouraging more kids to take swim lessons.”

The pep rally got underway around 1 p.m., coinciding with Jones’ silver-medal swim in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay. After games and giveaways, which included Seton Hall gear highlighting the Pirates’ swim program, there was a series of swim races branded, “Who is going to be the next Cullen Jones?”

Kids swam distances ranging from 12.5 yards to 50 yards, and there was also a celebrity race and relay. In the celebrity race, former 200-meter butterfly world-record holder Craig Beardsley, a resident of Chatham, N.J., competed against Lennon in a 50-yard freestyle race, with the Seton Hall coach coming away with the win.

After all of the festivities the group recorded a cheer for Jones and everyone signed a banner to ship to him in London, as he competes later this week in the 100-meter freestyle.

“I think the kids really enjoyed it, we did some nice giveaways with Seton Hall t-shirts and bags and the kids like having something close to home to cheer for,” Lennon said.

“This is one of the most important things that we can do as adults and parents and that is help Cullen Jones keep this momentum going to make it a part of our lives and encourage the safety behind it,” Lennon added. “That is really what it is about, not training superstars but teaching life-saving skills. I think this drive he is making is incredible and it is making a difference.”

Combine a student-discounted New Jersey transit ticket, with 30 minutes train-time, and you’re at Penn Statiion in Midtown Manhattan. From there, train, bus or walk to the neighborhood of your choice. Time Square’s Theater District: plays and musicals. Upper Fifth Avenue, dubbed Museum Mile; venerable institutions like the Metropolitan and the Guggenheim. Head Downtown and check out the financial district including the New York Stock Exchange. Besides the cultural and entertainment opportunities New York’s burrough of Manhattan provides, many students take advantage of internships with museums, nonprofit and government agencies, law and accounting firms, television and print media - the list goes on and on.

The Hall’s campus expands dramatically when you include the surrounding areas. Hop the train to the next town west, Maplewood, for a slice of pizza, or two stops and you are in Millburn with great sushi restaurants or just a few more and your are in Summit where you can do shopping at clothing stores like Benetton or Roots, Inc. PATRICK

LYONSDirector of Athletics and Recreational Services

Patrick G. Lyons was named Director of Athletics and Recreational Services at Seton Hall University on February 22, 2011.

Since his arrival, Lyons has been dedicated in his efforts to implement his vision for Seton Hall’s athletics and recreation department by introducing a number of initiatives designed to enhance the college experience for Seton Hall’s 14 NCAA Division I athletics programs and the student body as a whole.

In Lyons’ first full year as Director of Athletics, the Pirate Blue Athletic Fund, Seton Hall’s athletic fundraising vehicle, experienced the most successful year of its history, receiving record contributions to fund critical initiatives to help make the Pirates competitive in the BIG EAST conference and at a national level.

When Lyons arrived at Seton Hall, he established improvements and upgrades to the Pirates’ athletic and recreation facilities as a primary goal. Thanks in large part to contributions to Pirate Blue and a commitment from the University to make athletics and recreation a priority for the student-body, Seton Hall has already begun a large number of those enhancements. A new student fitness center is scheduled to be completed by summer 2013 and plans are in place to add a new scoreboard to Owen T. Carroll Field, revamp the student-athlete training room facility and create additional space for Academic Support Services. The men’s basketball locker room and women’s basketball coaching suite were each renovated during the 2011-12 season.

The Pirates have also experienced a number of on field successes since Lyons came to Seton Hall. The men’s basketball team finished the 2011-12 season with a 21-13 overall mark, matching the program’s highest win total since the 2003-04 season and advancing to the second round of the National Invitational Tournament. The baseball team captured the BIG EAST Championship at the conclusion of the 2011 season, the third in program history and first since 2001. The women’s soccer, volleyball and baseball programs all qualified for BIG EAST Championship competition during the 2011-12 season, with the women’s soccer program posting its most successful campaign since 1999.

Lyons has instituted a number of new events to help honor both its current and former student-athletes. In addition to the annual SAAC Student-Athlete Awards Banquet, Seton Hall held its first Senior Awards Banquet as a way to recognize its graduating seniors. He also refined the 2012 SHU Athletics Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony by hosting it in conjunction with a golf tournament at the Fairmount Country Club in Chatham, N.J.

Seton Hall’s student-athletes have exhibited success in a number of ways off the court as well, through community service initiatives and achievement in the classroom. The Pirates’ community outreach programs demonstrated outstanding involvement from every varsity program during the 2011-12 academic year, as Seton Hall’s student-athletes participated in an array of activities to benefit the community. Seton Hall also hosted

its First Annual Student-Athlete Leadership Forum, providing its student-athletes with a chance to learn from and meet speakers from across the sports landscape.

Lyons arrived at Seton Hall after spending seven years as Iona College’s Director of Athletics, establishing its department as one of the top programs in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. He was the chief administrator for the Gaels’ 21 NCAA Division I athletics programs.

Lyons’ student-athlete centered vision was incorporated into several initiatives at Iona. Working closely with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Lyons emphasized a community service element for all of Iona’s 400+ student-athletes and also displayed a deep commitment to student-athlete development and academic standards through additional support services and facilities in both the compliance and academic services offices.

Under Lyons, the Iona athletics department saw unprecedented growth and success both on and off the fields of play. Lyons also made his mark at Iona in fundraising and improvements made to athletics facilities. The Iona Gaels Capital Improvements Fund was created by Lyons as the first capital fundraising effort in the department’s history.

Before elevating to Director of Athletics at Iona, Lyons was the Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs. In that role, he was responsible for all revenue generation by the athletics department with primary oversight of the department’s fundraising arm - The Goal Club. Prior to that role, Lyons served as Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance.

As a coach, Lyons led the Iona golf team to its most successful four-year span. At the helm of the Gaels from 1998-02, he directed the squad to three MAAC Championships and earned a berth in the NCAA Golf Championship in each of his three full seasons.

A native of Providence, R.I., Lyons was a two-sport standout in hockey and golf. One of the most prolific scorers in school history, Lyons tallied 80 goals and 90 assists during his 86-game career and led all of NCAA Division I hockey in goals per game during the 1995-96 season. He captained the golf team during his junior and senior seasons and in 1996, received the Joseph O’Connell award, given annually to Iona’s most outstanding student-athlete.

In 1999, Lyons earned his master’s degree in teaching from Iona and earned an MBA from the Hagan School of Business in 2004. Lyons has also served as an adjunct professor in both the Biology department at Iona and the Sports Business Management program at Manhattanville College.

Lyons is married to the former Rachel Cintolo, who is a member of the faculty at Rutgers University.

The 2012-13 academic year is the 34th in the history of The BIG EAST Conference as the unique consortium marches on competing at the highest level with integrity and sportsmanship.

The BIG EAST has gone through membership changes since its birth and continues to make strides in improving the quality and depth of the storied league.

The BIG EAST Conference has been always been driven by lofty goals. The outstanding performances of the student-athletes at BIG EAST schools are evidence of the league’s proud tradition of success. The league has always been able to boast that many of its best students are also its best athletes. The 2011-12 year was no different.

In the athletic arena, BIG EAST student-athletes again enjoyed success on the national stage. The Georgetown women’s cross country team captured its first NCAA Championship. The win by the Hoyas marked the third-straight year a BIG EAST team has won the women’s cross country championship, with Villanova winning the past two. The Louisville men’s basketball team advanced to the Final Four in New Orleans. Connecticut field hockey reached the NCAA semifinals, as did the Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team. The Irish women’s basketball team and Syracuse women’s lacrosse team each reached the NCAA finals. USF softball reached the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla., for the first time in program history.

The BIG EAST placed two teams in the NCAA Women’s Final Four for the third time in the last four years as Connecticut joined Notre Dame in Denver, with the Fighting Irish advancing to the national title game for the second-straight year.

BIG EAST student-athletes won five NCAA championships. Sheila Reid won her second-straight NCAA Women’s Cross Country title. Syracuse hurdler Jarret Eaton won the 60-meter hurdle championship in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship. Notre Dame won the distance medley relay at the same championship. Georgetown’s Emily Infeld won the 3,000-meter run. Carlos Almeida of Louisville won the 200-yard breaststroke at the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships.

BIG EAST football maintained its national profile as a competitively balanced group. Three BIG EAST teams won bowl games, while the BIG EAST representative in the Bowl Championship Series won its bowl game for the fourth time in the last seven years- a streak that includes wins against the ACC, Big 12 and SEC champions.

The BIG EAST became the nation’s largest Division I-A conference in 2005-06 when five new members began competing – the University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, the University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida.

BIG EAST institutions reside in 18 of the nation’s top 50 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Cincinnati and Milwaukee. With its newest members, BIG EAST markets contain more than one-fourth of all television households in the U.S. The BIG EAST will welcome UCF, Houston, Memphis, SMU and Temple in all sports in 2013-14. Temple football will join the league in 2012, with Boise State and San Diego State joining the following year and Navy in 2015.

Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 32 national championships in six different sports and 137 student-athletes have won individual national titles through 2011-12.

BIG EAST basketball squads have captured 11 titles in the last 13 years. In 2003-04, Connecticut became the first school in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball titles in the same season. In ’02-03, the BIG EAST became the first conference in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s titles in the same year when the Syracuse men and the Connecticut women captured their respective national championships. The BIG EAST placed three men’s basketball teams in the Final Four in 1985, the only time this has occurred in NCAA history.

Proactive movement has been a signature strategy for the conference that was born in 1979. The BIG EAST continually turns challenges into opportunities to become stronger. The conference currently crowns champions in 24 sports.

The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeting of athletic directors from Providence College, St. John’s, Georgetown and Syracuse universities. Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College completed the original seven school alliance.

While the membership has both increased and changed, the focus of the BIG EAST has not wavered. The conference reflects a tradition of broad based programs, led by administrators and coaches who place a constant emphasis on academic integrity. Its student athletes own significantly high graduation rates and their record of scholastic achievement notably show a balance between intercollegiate athletics and academics.

Any successful organization has had the good fortune to have outstanding leadership. The BIG EAST primarily was the brainchild of Dave Gavitt, who was the conference’s first Commissioner. Michael Tranghese, the league’s first full-time employee, and for 11 years the associate to Gavitt, became Commissioner in 1990. In his first year, he administered the formation of The BIG EAST Football Conference. John Marinatto was the third commissioner of the BIG EAST, serving from 2009-2012, after seven years as the conference’s senior associate commissioner.

The league has long been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion and publicity, particularly regarding television. Those efforts have resulted in unparalleled visibility for BIG EAST student athletes. The conference has enjoyed longstanding relationships with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC.

BIG EAST men’s basketball games are regular sellouts at campus and major public arenas, including the annual men’s BIG EAST Championship in Madison Square Garden. The women’s basketball championship has led all conferences in attendance for the past nine years. Attendance figures also are significant in soccer and baseball.

The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Providence where the conference administers to more than 5,500 student-athletes.
