Sara Doell is currently in her third year as the head coach of Seton Hall’s women’s golf program. She was named the fi rst head coach in the new program’s history on March 26, 2010.

In her second year at the helm of the Pirates, the program took a major step forward. For the 2011-12 academic year, Seton Hall’s team stroke average per round was 313.15, an improvement of more than 27 strokes over its 2010-11 average. The Pirates were an average of 67.80 strokes over par per tournament last year, compared to 161.50 in their inaugural campaign. Furthermore, after just one top-10 fi nish in tournaments with fi elds larger than 10 teams in their fi rst year, the Pirates had eight top-10 fi nishes in 2011-12, and their only other two tournaments had eight-team fi elds, of which they fi nished in second and fourth place respectively.

In only the 15th tournament since the program’s inception, Doell’s hard work paid off when the Pirates took home their fi rst tournament team championship, an impressive 32-stroke victory at the Homewood Suites Siena Invitational.

Last year also provided Doell’s fi rst individual tournament champion when Hannah Basalone earned a playoff victory at the Lehigh University Invitational. Basalone also became the fi rst Seton Hall women’s golfer to be named to the All-BIG EAST Team.

Doell came to Seton Hall with a wealth of golf knowledge, having spent the prior four and a half years as an assistant coach at her alma mater, Penn State. Before her work as an assistant coach with the Nittany Lions, Doell spent more than four years as an assistant golf professional at Ballantyne Country Club in Charlotte, North Carolina. She was the professional liaison for the women’s golf league and the lead instructor of the junior golf program. Doell graduated from Penn State University in 2000 with a degree in Media Studies, focusing on the portrayals of women in sports media. On scholarship from 1996-2000, Doell left a lasting impression on the Nittany Lion golf program as she had more than 10 top-10 fi nishes. Not only does Doell currently hold the Penn State record for the lowest 54-hole score (215), she was team captain for the Lions from 1999-2000. That same year, Doell won the Women’s Golf Academic and Athletic Achievement award, the Mary Kennedy-Zierke award and the Penn State Spiritus Lionus Academic Leadership Award. The Kennedy-Zierke award is given annually to the student-athlete who provides outstanding leadership and dedication as a varsity golfer.

In 1998, she was the New York State Amateur Champion. Doell also became the Women’s Rochester District Amateur Champion in both 1997 and 2000. She carded her fi rst hole-in-one on March 28th, 2005 at Waterford Golf Club in Rock Hill, S.C.

With competitive playing, teaching and coaching experience, Doell has developed a coaching style that matches her core values. “I value hard work, balance, mindfulness and positive energy. I believe that my role as a coach is to integrate those values into my coaching. It is important to give each individual athlete the tools she needs to improve her skills and approach to the game. Practices will be designed to help each player work on her individual needs while helping the team as a whole. We will focus on short game, course management and target awareness. I also stress the importance of staying with the process instead of being so focused on outcome. I am a strong believer in positive energy and how it directly correlates to success. I can guarantee you one thing - the team will have fun in the process!” Doell is a Class A Teaching Member of the LPGA. She currently lives in Brooklyn, N.Y.

DEBBYMURPHYASSISTANT COACH • THIRD SEASON

Debby Murphy has been a teaching professional for 27 years, and currently holds that postition at Trump National Golf Club. In 1998, she founded the Webster Golf Camp while serving as the teaching professional at Webster Golf Club, before developing The Academy at Webster Golf Club in 2002.

In 2001, Murphy was named the LPGA Teaching and Club Professional of the Year while earning the Phyllis Meekins Junior Development Award in the same year. She was also named a Top 50 Teacher by Golf Digest’s Golf For Women Magazine in 2001.

As a player, Murphy has competed in tournaments on the Future’s Tour, Australian LPGA, PGA of America and LPGA.

“I am both honored and excited to have the chance to add Debby Murphy as a volunteer assistant coach to the Seton Hall women’s golf program,” said Doell. “Debby was my swing instructor and coach from the time I was ten years old through my college golf career. She has had a very positive impact on me both as a player and a teacher. Debby has always been a strong ambassador for the game of golf and I look forward to working alongside her. I know that she will be very infl uential in helping to develop the individuals on this team both on and off the course.”

The Seton Hall women’s golf team sails into its third year since the program’s inception with a new outlook. In year one, the Pirates struggled mightily as a young, new pro-gram. Year two saw signifi cant improvement, their fi rst team and individual title, and a fostering reputation as a team on the rise. Now, Seton Hall is being viewed a legiti-mate title contender every time it takes the course.

Head Coach Sara Doell has witnessed the team’s dramat-ic turnaround fi rst hand and likes the program’s chances this year and beyond.

“I truly believe that we have the experience, the talent and the drive to compete at an even higher level than last season,” Doell said. “We have all fi ve starters from last year’s squad returning… add two talented freshmen to the mix, and a year of experience to our returning players, and that is a recipe for success.”

Recruiting has been a boon for Doell since starting the program in 2010. After starting primarily the same fi ve women during the program’s inaugural season, all three of Doell’s 2011 recruits were immediately inserted into the starting lineup last year and played every tournament for the Pirates. Although only time will tell how the 2012 re-cruiting class will perform, both new members will crack the starting lineup for the Pirates season-opening tourna-ment at Bucknell.

One of the newcomers, Megan Tenhundfeld (Loveland, Ohio), has been excelling at Ursuline Academy of Cincin-nati and has four top-10 fi nishes in the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) and Plantations Junior Golf Tour (PJGT) events during the 2011 season.

“Megan played great this past summer with three Top-3 fi nishes, including a win at a Golfweek Junior Tour event in Oxford, Ohio,” Doell said. “Megan’s junior golf experience and success has prepared her to make the transition to col-lege golf. “She certainly has the potential to be an integral part of the team’s success this year. I really enjoyed getting to know her in the recruiting process and look forward to having her on campus this fall.”

Seton Hall’s other freshman will also likely make an im-mediate splash. Karlie Zabrosky (Erie, Pa.) qualifi ed for the Pennsylvania High School State Championships the last three years and was named District 10 Golfer of the Year for a third consecutive time in 2012.

“Last summer, I saw Karlie compete at a PGA Callaway series event in State College, Pa.,” Doell said. “Ironically, I was there to watch McKenzie compete and they hap-pened to be paired together. I was very impressed with how far Karlie hit the ball and how she handled herself on the course. After speaking with her parents and having her on campus, I knew that she was a great fi t for our pro-gram. She has made a few adjustments this past summer in her swing that will only help her game. I am excited to see how Karlie’s career unfolds as a Pirate.”

As a team however, the Pirates will only go as far as their battle-tested veterans take them. The undisputed leader of the group is Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.), who has led the team in stroke average each of the last two seasons, and last fall, became the fi rst Seton Hall women’s golfer to win a tournament individual title. Her summer success at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship may fore-shadow what could be a dominant junior year.

“Over the past two years, Hannah has laid the founda-tion for this women’s golf program by setting a strong, positive example both on the golf course and in the class-room,” Doell said. “She works hard, makes great decisions, and has had tremendous success… doing so with great humility. Hannah has written and re-written the record books for this young program and I know she will continue to do so this year.”

Providing an impressive one-two punch at the top of the Pirates order is fellow junior Christina Cantũ (Houston, Texas). Cantũ has ranked second, only to Basalone, on the team each of the last two years in stroke average, and just last year, logged three, top-10 fi nishes.


“When Christina is healthy, she is certainly a force to be reckoned with,” Doell said. “She proved that last spring when she led the team in three of our fi ve events. She is a competitor and has an extreme amount of self-confi dence that has helped her get through some tough injuries the past two years.”

Seton Hall’s trio of sophomores started every tournament for the Pirates last year and will be expected to steady the lineup once again in 2012-13. The performance of Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.), Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) and McK-enzie Cutter (Waldorf, Md.) was one of the main reasons why the Pirates took such an emphatic step forward last year.

Kruse notched her fi rst top-fi ve fi nish with a career-best 6-over par, 75-75-150, to tie for third place at the Lehigh Invitational, the highest fi nish by a freshman at the time in program history. “Ali was a very consistent competitor for us averaging 80 in her freshman year,” Doell said. “With an added year of experience and a strong summer, I know she can be an integral part of this year’s success.”

McClure also recorded one top-10 fi nish, a seventh place tie at the Homewood Suites Siena Invitational. Her score helped lead the Pirates to their fi rst-ever team champion-ship. “Erin is the type of player that brings more to the team than just good golf scores,” Doell said. “While Erin was a very consistent and strong player for us last year, she was also a huge part of helping with team morale and cohesiveness.”

The third of the sophomore trio was arguably the most successful of the group in 2011-12. McKenzie Cutter ranked third on the team in top-10 fi nishes (two) as well as fall (78.23), spring (80.75) and overall (79.44) stroke average. Her second place fi nish at the Homewood Suites Siena Invi-tational paced Seton Hall to its fi rst-ever tournament team victory. Unfortunately, a nagging back injury may keep her limited this fall.

“McKenzie has spent most of the summer rehabbing her back and taking care of her physical self,” Doell said. “Al-though she was not able to play much golf this summer, she has an incredible amount of confi dence and is very strong. I know she will use that to spring back from this injury.”

Pushing the back of the Pirates’ lineup and ensuring that the regular starters don’t get too comfortable in their posi-tion will be juniors Stacie Ballou (Staten Island, N.Y.), Saman-tha Massei (Allen, Texas) and Haley Van Es (Granger, Ind.). Massei and Van Es are well-experienced veterans as they started every tournament for the Pirates during the team’s inaugural year and enjoyed spot starts as sophomores. Bal-lou has made great strides in her game and continues to practice hard in anticipation of an opportunity.

“Although Sam only competed in a handful of events last season, she certainly made great strides in her golf game,” Doell said. Her swing has improved tremendously since she fi rst stepped onto campus two years ago. Last fall, Haley came back from a strong summer and made the starting line-up in our fi rst event. That performance shows her tal-ent and ability to be a strong competitor for this team. Sta-cie is the type of player that every coach loves to have on the squad. She is a hard worker, a strong student and has a strong passion for the game of golf.”

LEWISBURG, PA. - Despite adverse weather conditions the Seton Hall women’s golf team placed

third in the 15-team fi eld at the Bucknell Invitational, its best team fi nish in the program’s young

history and its fi rst top-fi ve showing. Seton Hall was paced by sophomore Hannah Basalone

(Brea, Calif.), tied for seventh place among all individual golfers with a 15-over-par, 75-76-74-

225. Her performance is the third top-10 fi nish of her career. As a team, Seton Hall was consistent

throughout fi ring a 77-over-par, 306-307-304-917, to fi nish 11 strokes behind the team cham-

pion, Bucknell, and 10 strokes behind second place fi nisher and BIG EAST foe, Rutgers.

NEW HAVEN, CONN. - Despite a signifi cantly more challenging tournament, the Seton Hall wom-

en’s golf team put together its second straight strong performance to begin the 2011 fall season.

The Pirates fi nished in eighth place in the 16-team fi eld at the Yale Women’s Intercollegiate, with

a 79-over-par, 318-311-314-943. Seton Hall fi nished 49 strokes behind the team champion, Har-

vard, but was only eight shots away from fi nishing in the top-5.

PRINCETON, N.J. - Sophomore Christina Cantú (Houston, Texas) fi red a third round 74 to pace

the Seton Hall women’s golf team to a seventh place fi nish at the highly-competitive Princeton

Women’s Invitational. Collectively, the Pirates fi nished with a 69-over-par, 310-310-313-933, 27

strokes behind the team champion, Harvard. Most signifi cantly however, was the fact that they

bested their only other BIG EAST competition, Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights placed ninth, seven

strokes behind Seton Hall. The performance marks Seton Hall’s third top-10 team fi nish in three

tournaments this fall. The Pirates had only one top-10 fi nish in tournaments with fi elds larger

than 10 teams in all of last year.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Sophomore Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.) fi nished at 9-over-par to guide the

Seton Hall women’s golf team to a fourth place team fi nish at the Rutgers Women’s Invitational.

The fi nish is the Pirates’ fourth straight top-10. Collectively, Seton Hall fi nished at 9-over-par with

a 315-322-637, just 21 strokes behind the team champion, Boston College. BIG EAST competitors

Rutgers and St. John’s fi nished just ahead of the Pirates in second and third place respectively.

Basalone led the Pirates with a 9-over-par, 315-322-637, to tie for fourth place among 98 indi-

vidual competitors, the highest fi nish in her collegiate career. Basalone fi nished just three strokes

behind the individual champion, Kortnie Maxoutopouli of Rutgers.

BETHLEHEM, PA. - Sophomore Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.) edged Brown’s Stephanie Hsieh in a

playoff to win the Lehigh Invitational, the fi rst-ever individual victory in the history of the Seton

Hall women’s golf program. As a team, the Pirates fi nished second, their best-ever fi nish. Basa-

lone fi red a 3-over-par, 73-74-147, to tie Hsieh. In the fi rst hole of the playoff , in front of a large

crowd which included the Seton Hall men’s golf team, she edged her competitor with a birdie

compared to Hsieh’s par. A celebration ensued which included a “Gatorade bath” by her fellow Se-

ton Hall student-athletes. A “bath” similar to the one received by Seton Hall men’s golfer Brandon

Park earlier in the day, who also won the Lehigh Invitational individual crown. Basalone’s victory

comes one tournament after her previous best fi nish. Last week, she tied for fourth at the Rutgers

Invitational. Collectively, the Pirates fi red a 35-over-par, 305-306-611, to fi nish four strokes be-

hind Brown for the team title. It took a tremendous performance by Brown to unseat the Pirates,

who were the leaders in the clubhouse following round one. The Bears fi red a 298 on Sunday.

BETHLEHEM, PA. - Playing in only the 15th tournament since the program’s inception, the Seton

Hall women’s golf team won its fi rst-ever team title. The Pirates won the Homewood Suites Siena

Invitational by an impressive 32 strokes over second place Indianapolis on Saturday. Collectively,

Seton Hall fi red a 22-over-par, 310, in the event’s fi nal round and fi nishes with a 39-over-par,

305-310-615. Indianapolis fi nished at 71-over-par, while Rutgers, the Pirates’ only BIG EAST

competition, fi nished in third at 72-over-par. Freshman McKenzie Cutter (Waldorf, Md.) logged

her highest career fi nish, placing second out of 49 individual golfers with a 6-over-par, 75-75-

150, for the highest fi nish in school history for a freshman.

CRYSTAL RIVER, FLA. - Sophomore Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.) fi red a 1-under-par, 71, in the

third and fi nal round of the University of Cincinnati Spring Invitational to guide the Seton Hall

women’s golf team to a ninth place tie among a fi eld of 19 teams. Basalone’s 71 is the lowest

round for a Seton Hall competitor at the three-day event and enabled her to climb from a 64th

place tie following round one to a 29th place fi nish. She completed play with a 16-over-par,

81-80-71-232. Collectively, the Pirates rebounded nicely in round three from a disappointing

round two. Seton Hall shot 11 strokes better in the third round with a 21-over-par, 309. For

the tournament, the team was 72-over-par, with a 307-320-309-936, 58 strokes behind team

champion, Florida International.

BEALLSVILLE, MD. - The Seton Hall women’s golf team shot a 31-over-par, 319, in the fi nal round

of the 2012 Hoya Women’s Invitational to fi nish in ninth place overall at The Members Club at

Four Streams on Tuesday, April 3, in Beallsville, Md. Sophomore Christina Cantύ (Houston, Texas)

fi red the low round of the tournament for Seton Hall on the fi nal day of competition, posting a

one-over-par 73 to lead the Pirates and fi nish in a tie for 16th place individually with a three-

round tally of 241. She moved up 23 spots in the third round, entering the day in a tie for 39th

place. Seton Hall’s third-round performance was its lowest of the tournament, improving on the

fi rst-round total of 324 by fi ve strokes, while shaving 16 strokes off the second-round score of 335.

SUFFERN, N.Y. - Sophomore Christina Cantú (Houston, Texas) fi red a four-over-par, 76, to lead the

Seton Hall women’s golf team to a fourth place fi nish at the 2012 Columbia Roar-ee Invitational,

Saturday. Cantu had a strong tournament for the Pirates, fi nish in a sixth place tie among 75 in-

dividual golfers. The Texas native completed play with a 7-over-par, 75-76-151. Collectively, the

Pirates shot a 29-over-par, 317, in round two and fi nished 29 strokes behind the team champion,

Harvard. Seton Hall completed play with a 53-over-par, 312-317-629, for the two-round event.

The Pirates fi nished sandwiched between two other BIG EAST schools. St. John’s completed play

four strokes ahead of Seton Hall at 49-over-par, while Rutgers fi nished seven strokes behind the

Pirates.

REUNION, Fla. – USF captured the 2012 BIG EAST Women’s Golf Championship following the fi nal round of play at The Watson Course at Reunion Resort & Club in Reunion, Fla. The Bulls fi nished with a three round to-tal of 910 to beat second-place Notre Dame by one shot. The Bulls earned their fi rst BIG EAST team title by scoring a 306 in the fi nal round. The Bulls were led by sophomore Christina Miller, who shot a fi nal round one over-par 73. She fi nished in third place individually with an eight over-par 224. Three other Bulls placed in the top-10. Senior Kelli Pry fi nished in a tie for sixth shooting a fi nal round 76 and fi nishing the tournament with a score of 228. Junior Shena Yang fi nished tied for eighth place with a total of 229 while junior Amy West fi nished alone in 10th place with a score of 230. Notre Dame Freshman Ashley Armstrong won the in-dividual title after defeating Louisville freshman Emily Haas on the third playoff hole. Both players posted to-tals of 223 and fi nished the tournament seven-over par. Both players bogeyed the 18th in the fi rst hole of the playoff . They played the hole again and both registered pars. Armstrong birdied the hole the third time around to secure the victory. This is the second consecutive year that a freshman has captured the individual title. Notre Dame fi nished one shot behind USF and earned a second place fi nish with a three day total of 911. Senior Becca Huff er fi red a fi nal round 74 and fi nished in fi fth place with a 226 total. Sophomore Kristina Nhim fi nished tied for sixth place with a 228 total. Louisville fi nished the championship in third place after a fi nal round score of 295. The Cardi-nals posted a 918 team total for the tournament. Louisville freshman Katie Petrino shot a fi nal round 71 for a one under-par round. She was the only player in the championship to post a round under par. She fi nished alone in fourth place with a score of 225. Seton Hall fi nished in fourth place after shooting a 312 on day three for a total of 943. Rutgers fi nished in fi fth place after shooting a 321 for a 956 total. Freshman Kortnie Maxoutopoulis fi nished tied for eighth place with a 229. St. John’s placed sixth with a 960 three-round total. Cincinnati fi nished in seventh place with a score of 962 while Georgetown fi nished in eight-place with a 967 total.

Highlighted by fast, fi rm and wide rolling fairways, a

variety of strategically placed bunkers and large greens,

the 7,257 yard, par 72 Watson Course, a Signature Design

by Tom Watson, is as much about strategy as it is about

length. Demanding a well thought out approach from

every player regardless of skill level, this course puts

a premium on a solid short game with spacious green

complexes where club selection can vary from putter to

lob wedge to three-wood.

2012 BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP


SETON HALL FINISHES FOURTHBASALONE 11th; CANTU 13th

ORLANDO, FLA. - The Seton Hall women’s golf team counted four,

6-over-par, 78, scores in the third and fi nal round of the 2012

BIG EAST Championship as the Pirates fi nished fourth among the

eight-team fi eld in the conference’s marquee event.

Collectively, the Pirates saved their best round for last as they

shot a 24-over-par, 312, in round three. Seton Hall fi nished 33

strokes behind the team champion, USF, which edged Notre

Dame by one stroke to win the team title.

The fourth place fi nish is a monumental step in the right direc-

tion for the Pirates, who fi nished in last place at the BIG EAST

Championship a year ago. In 2011, Seton Hall fi nished 172

strokes over par and 69 strokes behind seventh place Cincinnati.

This season, the Pirates fi nished just 79 strokes over par and 13

strokes in front of fi fth place Rutgers.

“I’m so incredibly proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish

this year,” said Head Coach Sara Doell. Our stroke averages came

way down, our Golfstat ranking improved and we won our fi rst

tournament. Now, to place in the top half of the BIG EAST leader

board in only our second year of existence is really a testament

to our progress.”

Sophomore Hannah Basalone (Brea, Calif.) fi nished her second

BIG EAST Championship at 15-over-par, with a 74-79-78-231,

and placed 11th overall. Basalone fi nished eight strokes behind

Ashley Armstrong of Notre Dame and Emily Haas of Louisville.

Basalone’s performance is a vast improvement from a sickness

marred 2011 event when she tied for 26th place.

“Once again, Hannah set the pace for us,” Doell said. “She has

been such an important part of our success this year and she was

simply fantastic in this tournament.”

No one was more consistent throughout the three-round event

than sophomore Christina Cantu (Houston, Texas). Cantu fi red

a trio of 78’s to place 13th overall at 18-over-par with a 78-78-

78-234.

Freshman Ali Kruse (Overland Park, Kan.) did a fi ne job of re-

bounding from a very rough fi rst round. After fi ring a fi rst round

85, she responded with a 79 in round two and a 78 in round

three to fi nish the tournament in a 24th place tie with a 26-over-

par, 85-79-78-242. Teammate Erin McClure (Tucson, Ariz.) also

tied for 24th with a 26-over-par, 78-81-83-242. Mckenzie Cutter

(Waldorf, Md.) also rebounded in the fi nal round after struggles

in the fi rst and second rounds. Her third round 78 contributed

to the team score. Cutter fi nished at 31-over-par with an 84-

85-78-247.

“I think our freshmen showed signifi cant growth throughout

this three-day event,” Doell said. “It shows a lot of poise and

mental toughness for freshmen like Ali and Mckenzie to shoot

a higher score early in the tournament and respond with a 78 in

round three. Up and down our lineup, I really couldn’t be hap-

pier with our performance.”

Combine a student-discounted New Jersey transit ticket, with 30 minutes train-time, and you’re at Penn Statiion in Midtown Manhattan. From there, train, bus or walk to the neighborhood of your choice. Time Square’s Theater District: plays and musicals. Upper Fifth Avenue, dubbed Museum Mile; venerable institutions like the Metropolitan and the Guggenheim. Head Downtown and check out the fi nancial district including the New York Stock Exchange. Besides the cultural and entertainment opportunities New York’s burrough of Manhattan provides, many students take advantage of internships with museums, nonprofi t and government agencies, law and accounting fi rms, television and print media - the list goes on and on.

The Hall’s campus expands dramatically when you include the surrounding areas. UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT, SETON HALL UNIVERSITY

Gabriel Esteban, Ph.D., was appointed Interim President of Seton Hall University in July 2010. Since 2007, Dr. Esteban served as Provost and Chief Academic Officer at Seton Hall University. As Provost, he oversaw eight colleges and schools, University Libraries, and Enrollment Services.

Dr. Esteban led the Strategic Planning initiative, collaborated with faculty and academic leaders on enhancing and adding undergraduate and graduate programs, establishing academic priorities, and strengthening the centrality of academics at SHU. Since 2009, Dr. Esteban has also been responsible for Enrollment Services and is leading the change in Enrollment Management Strategy. Dr. Esteban was previously Provost (2003-2007), Dean of the College of Business and Tenured Professor of Marketing at the University of Central Arkansas (2001-2003). He served as Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs at Arkansas Tech University (1996-2001) and was an Assistant Professor at the University of Houston-Victoria. Dr. Esteban was also a full-time instructor at the College of Business Administration of the University of the Philippines.

Dr. Esteban is active in various national, regional, and community groups and served on a national task force that designed a Voluntary System of Accountability (VSA) for universities and colleges. He is also involved in Leadership Education for Asian-Pacifics (LEAP) as a mentor and faculty member. Dr. Esteban served as team chair and consultant evaluator for the largest regional accrediting body, the Higher Learning Commission and also served as a member of their Accreditation Review Council. At the local level, Dr. Esteban was past chair of the boards of the Conway Chamber of Commerce and the Women’s Shelter of Central Arkansas. And served on the board of the Faulkner County Habitat for Humanity He is currently a member of the Board of the Asian-Pacific Americans in Higher Education (APAHE), and the South Orange Performing Arts Center.

Dr. Esteban has published papers in refereed journals and proceedings, and presented papers at national, international and regional conferences such as TIMS/ORSA, American Psychological Association, Western Decision Sciences Conference, and the International Trade and Finance Association.

Dr. Esteban received a Ph.D. in Administration from the Graduate School of Management at the University of California at Irvine in 1993 and a Master of Science in Japanese Business Studies from Chaminade University in Honolulu in 1986. He earned a Master of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from the University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City. Dr. Esteban received specialized training in Leading Transformation and Change at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, and he completed the Japan Management Program at the Japan-America Institute for Management Science in Honolulu. He also has private sector work experience in the Philippines and in Japan.

PATRICK

Director of Athletics and Recreational Services

Patrick G. Lyons was named Director of Athletics and Recreational Services at Seton Hall University on February 22, 2011.

Since his arrival, Lyons has been dedicated in his efforts to implement his vision for Seton Hall’s athletics and recreation department by introducing a number of initiatives designed to enhance the college experience for Seton Hall’s 14 NCAA Division I athletics programs and the student body as a whole.

In Lyons’ first full year as Director of Athletics, the Pirate Blue Athletic Fund, Seton Hall’s athletic fundraising vehicle, experienced the most successful year of its history, receiving record contributions to fund critical initiatives to help make the Pirates competitive in the BIG EAST conference and at a national level.

When Lyons arrived at Seton Hall, he established improvements and upgrades to the Pirates’ athletic and recreation facilities as a primary goal. Thanks in large part to contributions to Pirate Blue and a commitment from the University to make athletics and recreation a priority for the student-body, Seton Hall has already begun a large number of those enhancements. A new student fitness center is scheduled to be completed by summer 2013 and plans are in place to add a new scoreboard to Owen T. Carroll Field, revamp the student-athlete training room facility and create additional space for Academic Support Services. The men’s basketball locker room and women’s basketball coaching suite were each renovated during the 2011-12 season.

The Pirates have also experienced a number of on field successes since Lyons came to Seton Hall. The men’s basketball team finished the 2011-12 season with a 21-13 overall mark, matching the program’s highest win total since the 2003-04 season and advancing to the second round of the National Invitational Tournament. The baseball team captured the BIG EAST Championship at the conclusion of the 2011 season, the third in program history and first since 2001. The women’s soccer, volleyball and baseball programs all qualified for BIG EAST Championship competition during the 2011-12 season, with the women’s soccer program posting its most successful campaign since 1999.

Lyons has instituted a number of new events to help honor both its current and former student-athletes. In addition to the annual SAAC Student-Athlete Awards Banquet, Seton Hall held its first Senior Awards Banquet as a way to recognize its graduating seniors. He also refined the 2012 SHU Athletics Hall of Fame Enshrinement Ceremony by hosting it in conjunction with a golf tournament at the Fairmount Country Club in Chatham, N.J.

Seton Hall’s student-athletes have exhibited success in a number of ways off the court as well, through community service initiatives and achievement in the classroom. The Pirates’ community outreach programs demonstrated outstanding involvement from every varsity program during the 2011-12 academic year, as Seton Hall’s student-athletes participated in an array of activities to benefit the community. Seton Hall also hosted

its First Annual Student-Athlete Leadership Forum, providing its student-athletes with a chance to learn from and meet speakers from across the sports landscape.

Lyons arrived at Seton Hall after spending seven years as Iona College’s Director of Athletics, establishing its department as one of the top programs in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. He was the chief administrator for the Gaels’ 21 NCAA Division I athletics programs.

Lyons’ student-athlete centered vision was incorporated into several initiatives at Iona. Working closely with the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Lyons emphasized a community service element for all of Iona’s 400+ student-athletes and also displayed a deep commitment to student-athlete development and academic standards through additional support services and facilities in both the compliance and academic services offices.

Under Lyons, the Iona athletics department saw unprecedented growth and success both on and off the fields of play. Lyons also made his mark at Iona in fundraising and improvements made to athletics facilities. The Iona Gaels Capital Improvements Fund was created by Lyons as the first capital fundraising effort in the department’s history.

Before elevating to Director of Athletics at Iona, Lyons was the Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs. In that role, he was responsible for all revenue generation by the athletics department with primary oversight of the department’s fundraising arm - The Goal Club. Prior to that role, Lyons served as Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance.

As a coach, Lyons led the Iona golf team to its most successful four-year span. At the helm of the Gaels from 1998-02, he directed the squad to three MAAC Championships and earned a berth in the NCAA Golf Championship in each of his three full seasons.

A native of Providence, R.I., Lyons was a two-sport standout in hockey and golf. One of the most prolific scorers in school history, Lyons tallied 80 goals and 90 assists during his 86-game career and led all of NCAA Division I hockey in goals per game during the 1995-96 season. He captained the golf team during his junior and senior seasons and in 1996, received the Joseph O’Connell award, given annually to Iona’s most outstanding student-athlete.

In 1999, Lyons earned his master’s degree in teaching from Iona and earned an MBA from the Hagan School of Business in 2004. Lyons has also served as an adjunct professor in both the Biology department at Iona and the Sports Business Management program at Manhattanville College.

Lyons is married to the former Rachel Cintolo, who is a member of the faculty at Rutgers University.

Intercollegiate athletics is a rewarding extracurricular activity that can add a special dimension to student life. At Seton Hall, all student-athletes participate in the academic counseling program. Director of Academic Support Services for student-athletes, Matt Geibel, and his staff help ensure that student-athletes successfully balance their commitments to academics and athletics.

Geibel, Associate Director Amanda DiDonato, Academic Advisor Ryan Westman and two graduate assistant, Marissa Muoio and Zachary Romash provide support along with learning consultants and numerous tutors.

They monitor classroom performance by maintaining contact with faculty, monitoring study halls, facilitating advisement and overseeing compliance with university and NCAA academic regulations. The office of Academic Support also coordinates all institutional, regional and national award recognition.

Life Skills MissionTo provide life skills support in the areas of academics, athletics, personal development, career development and community service through the distribution of NCAA, BIG EAST Conference and Seton Hall resources. Seton Hall University’s Life Skills program will provide on-going educational opportunities to student-athletes to further develop these areas and make our student-athletes into successful leaders of the future.

Athletics ExcellenceSeton Hall is committed to excellence in all areas and strives to provide its programs with the resources to succeed on the field of competition. The Department of Athletics will seek out top professionals to serve as coaches, athletic trainers, and strength and conditioning specialists who can impart expert knowledge and direction to the student-athletes.

Academic ExcellenceSeton Hall provides a comprehensive academic support program for its Student-Athletes. Specifically, the Office of Academic Support Services for Student Athletes provides tutoring, review sessions, study groups and writing development for Seton Hall student-athletes, as well as regular interaction with faculty.

Career DevelopmentSeton Hall provides a comprehensive career development program for its student-athletes in conjunction with The Career Center at Seton Hall University. Components of the program range from resume writing and interviewing techniques, to the graduate school application processes, seminars from business leaders within the Seton Hall community and education on post-graduate scholarship opportunities.

Personal DevelopmentSeton Hall provides several seminars on different personal topics throughout the year. Workshops vary from sports nutrition to hazing prevention, drug and alcohol awareness, and business etiquette.

The primary objective of the Seton Hall sports medicine staff is to provide the highest quality of evidenced based health care to the University’s student-athletes. In so doing we strive to limit risk and exposure to injury mechanisms, provide immediate response to all medical needs of the student-athlete and rehabilitate any and all injuries suffered by the student-athlete.

The three main goals of the Seton Hall University sports medicine staff are that all student-athletes are safe and free of injury, all student-athletes achieve their maximum athletic potential, and all Seton Hall University Athletic teams achieve BIG EAST Conference success.

Seton Hall student-athletes enjoy a 2,500-square foot varsity weight room, which opened in the fall of 1997. The facility offers versatile, multi-purpose and comprehensive upper and lower body strength training equipment. Among the features of the facility are an Olympic lifting area and cardiovascular equipment such as Stairmasters, treadmills, bicycles and a versaclimber. The room offers free weights, target-loaded machines and circuit training stations. Khyl Farrison, Angelo Gingerelli & Nanna Rivers work with each team to provide expert coaching and guidance.

The 2012-13 academic year is the 34th in the history of The BIG EAST Conference as the unique consortium marches on competing at the highest level with integrity and sportsmanship.

The BIG EAST has gone through membership changes since its birth and continues to make strides in improving the quality and depth of the storied league.

The BIG EAST Conference has been always been driven by lofty goals. The outstanding performances of the student-athletes at BIG EAST schools are evidence of the league’s proud tradition of success. The league has always been able to boast that many of its best students are also its best athletes. The 2011-12 year was no different.

In the athletic arena, BIG EAST student-athletes again enjoyed success on the national stage. The Georgetown women’s cross country team captured its fi rst NCAA Championship. The win by the Hoyas marked the third-straight year a BIG EAST team has won the women’s cross country championship, with Villanova winning the past two. The Louisville men’s basketball team advanced to the Final Four in New Orleans. Connecticut fi eld hockey reached the NCAA semifi nals, as did the Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team. The Irish women’s basketball team and Syracuse women’s lacrosse team each reached the NCAA fi nals. USF softball reached the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla., for the fi rst time in program history.

The BIG EAST placed two teams in the NCAA Women’s Final Four for the third time in the last four years as Connecticut joined Notre Dame in Denver, with the Fighting Irish advancing to the national title game for the second-straight year.

BIG EAST student-athletes won fi ve NCAA championships. Sheila Reid won her second-straight NCAA Women’s Cross Country title. Syracuse hurdler Jarret Eaton won the 60-meter hurdle championship in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship. Notre Dame won the distance medley relay at the same championship. Georgetown’s Emily Infeld won the 3,000-meter run. Carlos Almeida of Louisville won the 200-yard breaststroke at the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships.

BIG EAST football maintained its national profi le as a competitively balanced group. Three BIG EAST teams won bowl games, while the BIG EAST representative in the Bowl Championship Series won its bowl game for the fourth time in the last seven years- a streak that includes wins against the ACC, Big 12 and SEC champions.

The BIG EAST became the nation’s largest Division I-A conference in 2005-06 when fi ve new members began competing – the University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, the University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida.

BIG EAST institutions reside in 18 of the nation’s top 50 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Cincinnati and Milwaukee. With its newest members, BIG EAST markets contain more than one-fourth of all television households in the U.S. The BIG EAST will welcome UCF, Houston, Memphis, SMU and Temple in all sports in 2013-14. Temple football will join the league in 2012, with Boise State and San Diego State joining the following year and Navy in 2015.

Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 32 national championships in six different sports and 137 student-athletes have won individual national titles through 2011-12.

BIG EAST basketball squads have captured 11 titles in the last 13 years. In 2003-04, Connecticut became the fi rst school in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball titles in the same season. In ’02-03, the BIG EAST became the fi rst conference in NCAA history to win the men’s and women’s titles in the same year when the Syracuse men and the Connecticut women captured their respective national championships. The BIG EAST placed three men’s basketball teams in the Final Four in 1985, the only time this has occurred in NCAA history.

Proactive movement has been a signature strategy for the conference that was born in 1979. The BIG EAST continually turns challenges into opportunities to become stronger. The conference currently crowns champions in 24 sports.

The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeting of athletic directors from Providence College, St. John’s, Georgetown and Syracuse universities. Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College completed the original seven school alliance.

While the membership has both increased and changed, the focus of the BIG EAST has not wavered. The conference refl ects a tradition of broad based programs, led by administrators and coaches who place a constant emphasis on academic integrity. Its student athletes own signifi cantly high graduation rates and their record of scholastic achievement notably show a balance between intercollegiate athletics and academics.

Any successful organization has had the good fortune to have outstanding leadership. The BIG EAST primarily was the brainchild of Dave Gavitt, who was the conference’s fi rst Commissioner. Michael Tranghese, the league’s fi rst full-time employee, and for 11 years the associate to Gavitt, became Commissioner in 1990. In his fi rst year, he administered the formation of The BIG EAST Football Conference. John Marinatto was the third commissioner of the BIG EAST, serving from 2009-2012, after seven years as the conference’s senior associate commissioner.

The league has long been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion and publicity, particularly regarding television. Those efforts have resulted in unparalleled visibility for BIG EAST student athletes. The conference has enjoyed longstanding relationships with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC.

BIG EAST men’s basketball games are regular sellouts at campus and major public arenas, including the annual men’s BIG EAST Championship in Madison Square Garden. The women’s basketball championship has led all conferences in attendance for the past nine years. Attendance fi gures also are signifi cant in soccer and baseball.

The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Providence where the conference administers to more than 5,500 student-athletes.

PIRATE BLUE ATHLETIC FUNDRecognizing Seton Hall University’s long and distinguished athletic history, the Pirate Blue Athletic Fund was founded in 1985 by Pirate legend Richie Regan ’53 as the University’s athletic fund-raising vehicle.

Through annual contributions, Pirate Blue enables the University to fund critical initiatives such as recruiting, travel, equipment, facilities, and academic advising. The funds raised through Pirate Blue are essential in allowing Seton Hall to remain competitive in the BIG EAST Conference.
