PARK UNIVERSITY

Park University calls Parkville, Mo., and the Greater Kansas City area home, offering stu-dents the features of both small-town life and the flashing lights of a big city. With a population of more than 4,000, Parkville allows students the small-town lifestyle

and tightly knit community often times associated with small college athletics and the NAIA. Originally a trading post on the Missouri River, Parkville grew as Kansas City boomed in the late 1800s, which included the founding of Park University. Both the University and the city get their names from Col. George S. Park, who played a key role in the early development of the area. Today, Parkville’s historic downtown district, coupled with new shopping areas to the north and east, gives Park University students multiple entertainment opportunities within the area. Parkville sits within the Northland area of metropolitan Kansas City, which encompasses 15 counties, nine of which are in Missouri and six across the state line in Kansas. The North-land is locally referred to as “north of the river.” Contained wholly within Missouri, it encom-passes portions of Platte and Clay counties, including the northern half of Kansas City, Mo., and the cities of Parkville, Gladstone, Liberty and North Kansas City. Kansas City is situated at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers, often referred to as Kaw Point, straddling the border between the two states. The Kansas City Metropolitan Statistical Area, anchored by Kansas City, Mo., is the 29th largest in the United States, with an estimated population just over 2 million. A tradition-rich city known for its barbecue and storied sports history, Kansas City is currently home to Major League Baseball’s Kansas City Royals, the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League, Major League Soccer’s Sporting Kansas City and the Kansas Speed-way, which hosts multiple NASCAR and IRL events throughout the year, including two Sprint Cup Series event in the spring and fall. Kansas City is also home to the Kansas City T-Bones independent league baseball franchise and the Kansas City Explorers of World TeamTennis. The Sprint Center and the Power & Light District in the downtown area is one of the region’s top entertainment areas. The Sprint Center also houses the College Basketball Expe-rience, which includes the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame. A few blocks away sits historic Municipal Auditorium, home to the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. In 2010, Park University made its third appearance in five seasons, and its fifth overall, in the national tournament. Additionally, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics moved its offices downtown in the summer of 2007. Kansas City is also known for its historic shopping districts, including Westport and the Country Club Plaza, which is one of the world’s largest outdoor shopping areas designed for motor-vehicle traffic. Commonly referred to as “The Plaza,” it is home to one of the nation’s largest holiday light displays between Thanksgiving and January. In the Northland, Zona Rosa has become a popular shopping district, while Leawood Town Center and The Legends at Village West in Kansas City, Kan., keep shoppers occupied in Kansas.

Best Value, Nationwide Park continues to increase access to higher education by offering the quality under-graduate and graduate degrees students desire at locations, times and delivery formats that best serve their needs. In 2010, the University was ranked as the No. 1 value among private colleges and universities by Parents & Colleges, an online resource for parents of college-bound students. According to Parents & Colleges, institutions included on this list offer a diversity of de-grees, have affordable tuitions and/or offer generous financial aid, and report the highest SAT or ACT scores for the incoming class. Park was cited as offering “both proximity to big-city excitement and the safe, relaxed atmosphere of a small town… the student body represents 50 states and 100 countries, and the school prides itself on its diversity and global outlook. Tuition for full-time undergraduates is a fraction of other private institutions, and average class size and student-to-faculty ratio are low.”Founded Founded in 1875 in Parkville, Mo., Park University has developed into a comprehensive, independent institution that is a national leader in higher education. In 2000, Park achieved university status and now serves more than 24,000 students annually at 40 campus centers in 21 states and online.

Serving an ethnically diverse student population and non-traditional adult learners has, for many years, been central to Park’s educational mission. Even in its first year, Park Universi-ty enrolled women students as well as men, something that was unusual at the time; and two of the original 17 students were Native Americans. Park was also an early integrator when it welcomed African-American students to live in Park’s residence halls in the 1950s.Present Providing such access has developed considerable diversity among the student popula-tion, with more than 650 international students from 110 countries, and a 42 percent student representation from racial, ethnic and cultural groups typically underrepresented in colleges and universities. The University has repeatedly been recognized as one of the top 100 Ameri-can colleges/universities in the nation graduating Hispanic, African-American and American-Indian students. In addition, extracurricular activities and championship-caliber athletic pro-grams complement Park’s outstanding scholastic programs. Park offers numerous degree programs online, and it maintains a long-standing rela-tionship with the U.S. military for which it has been recognized as one of the largest pro-viders of online undergraduate education to military learners worldwide. Park has received international recognition by Military Advanced Education magazine as one of its “Top 20 Mil-itary-Friendly Colleges and Universities,” citing Park’s “innovative academic degree programs steeped in excellence.”

PARK UNIVERSITYPark University director of athletics Claude English begins his 17th full year and his 18th season as the University’s AD in 2012-13, starting his tenure as athletics director in January of 1996. In his

nearly 17-year term, English has guided Park through a steady athletics program improvement, including enhancing facilities and providing student-athletes with a first-rate experience at Park. In 2011-12, English had chief oversight in Park’s newest addition to its list of facilities when the Track & Field Complex opened as a train-ing ground for the track and cross country teams. The six-lane, compe-tition-ready track sits adjacent to the 1,500-seat Julian Field, which is also undergoing seating renovations in 2012-13, and the Park Univer-sity Softball Complex, which will feature an upgraded sound system in the upcoming year. English’s tenure has also included the opening of Comfort Field, home to the Park University baseball program, an agreement with The National Golf Club of Kansas City, which gives the women’s golf pro-gram one of the finest practice and competition facilities in the Mid-west, and Breckon Sports Center, home to the Park University men’s and women’s volleyball programs, in addition to administrative offices. In 2010, English was honored for his service as an athletics ad-ministrator by being inducted into the McLendon Minority Athletics Administrators Hall of Fame, representing the NAIA in a group of sev-en individuals honored by the John McLendon Minority Scholarship Foundation, which supports the McLendon Minority Postgraduate Scholarship fund. Later in 2010-11, English was honored by a second hall of fame in his home town, earning a spot in the Chattahoochee Valley Sports Hall of Fame in Columbus, Ga. English began his affiliation with Park University in the 1992-93 men’s basketball season, beginning a 15-year coaching run with the Pirates that saw a trip to the NAIA Fab Four in 1998 and 182 coach-ing wins, making English the Pirates’ winningest coach. He owns 227 total wins, which includes a three-year head coaching stint at his alma mater, the University of Rhode Island, an NCAA Division I school in the Atlantic 10 Conference. He was the A-10 coach of the year in 1981-82, and in 1997-98, after guiding Park to a 27-8 overall mark, the win-ningest season in a Park history that dates back to 1961-62, he was honored with the Charles A. Krigel Award for outstanding sportsman-ship. His team was also honored that season, earning the Dr. James Naismith-Emil S. Liston Sportsmanship Award. In his playing career, English was a two-year standout at Christian College in Dallas, Texas, before finishing his collegiate career at Rhode Island. After college, English was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers and played one NBA season, 1970-71, before finishing his basketball career with the Hartford Capitals of the Eastern Basketball Association. He was a three-year captain for the Capitals and helped the team to an Eastern Association title in 1973-74. As director of athletics at Park, the Pirates have captured 53 con-ference championships, and in each of his previous 16 seasons as ath-letics director, at least one Park program has represented the Pirates in NAIA postseason play. He has also watched 98 student-athletes earn All-America honors, and 200 student-athletes have been named Dak-tronics-NAIA Scholar-Athletes, the highest academic honor bestowed upon a student-athlete by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. In 2008-09, Park’s department of athletics carried an overall grade point average better than 3.0 and the school earned a record seven NAIA scholar team designations. In his most recent year as AD, Eng-lish’s department posted four scholar teams, which carry a 3.0 GPA or better as a team through the academic year.

Kline owns a 124-90 record at Park and is 264-174 over 14 seasons as a head coach, spending his first seven seasons as a head coach at his alma mater, Indiana Tech. In 2009-10, the Pirates overcame an 0-4 start to go 23-10, beat-ing Georgetown (Ky.) in the first round of the NAIA tournament during Herschel Rodgers’ Third-Team All-America season. Kline coached one of Park’s most decorated All-Americans between 2006 and 2009, as Jon Meriweather collected four different All-America designations, and in 2006-07, All-American Brandon Voorhees helped lead Kline’s team to the 2007 NAIA tournament, marking Park’s first trip to the event since 1998. In 2003-04, Kline earned the first of three career coach-of-the-year awards, claiming Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Coach of the Year, and in 2006-07, he was the Independent Region Coach of the Year after beating Mountain State to secure the 2007 bid at Municipal Auditorium. PARK UNIVERSITY

2012-13 OUTLOOK

Jason Kline knew his eighth season at the helm of the Park University men’s basketball program would be a recruiting battle to find the pieces that would return the Pirates to the top half of the American Midwest Conference.

Seven seniors departed, including an All-American, from the 2011-12 team. Many coaches would become deer-in-headlights, but Kline, who has a knack for filling roles with experience, met the challenge with 13 new faces that all bring one constant to the table. Defense. Defense will have to be this team’s trademark, bringing back just 98 total points from 2011-12 from seniors Michael Anorue and Devin Barnes. “Our best teams have been ones that turned defense into offense, and just holding opponents to low scoring numbers isn’t enough. We have to be able to turn teams over and we have to rebound on every possession.” Kline’s most recent national-tournament team rode that recipe all the way to Municipal Auditorium, averaging 12 steals while holding opponents to 63 points per game, qualifying for the postseason despite averaging just 71 points on the offensive end. That kind of high-pressure, smothering defense will need to reappear, according to Kline, if the Pirates want to put together another season like 2010-11. “We have to become a great defensive and rebounding team,” Kline said. “We might tend to overthink things early on, and our defense is going to have to dictate games. We have the size and athleticism to be good, but there’s a learning curve. It makes the nonconference schedule critical because we’ll need to be ready to find another gear in January.” Park will be a bigger team in 2012-13 than it was in 2011-12, featuring 6-foot-11 John Kotsanos, from Thessaloniki, Greece, and Torr Woodhouse, from Cambridge, New Zealand, a 6-foot-8 junior-college transfer from Southeast Community College. And the upgrade in size won’t be limited to the frontcourt. The Pirates are expected to start 6-foot-5 point guard Nigel Van Oostrum, a transfer from NCAA Division II Franklin Pierce, who averaged 6.3 points last season. Woodhouse was a force on the glass for Southeast, which produced former Pirates Cooper Bayiha and Goldeng Deng. He averaged six rebounds and eight points last year for the Nebraska-based school. His Southeast CC teammate Venton Wilder will also join the team for his junior season after averaging 13 points and five rebounds at South-east last season. Kline is also looking for an extra spark out of one of his most highly touted and anticipated freshmen in his career at Park, Xavielle Brown, who averaged 20.7 points and 10.3 rebounds per game at Wayne High School in Kline’s home town, Fort Wayne, Ind., earning his way to first-team all-state and first-team all-conference honors. “It will be an interesting mix, because we have talent and maturity, but we put a lot in early and there a lot of wrinkles in what we do, so it’s hard to pick it all up at once,” Kline said. “But as we get into the season, the guys will become more comfortable with our system and it’ll allow us to be an even more active team defensively.” Traditionally, the backcourt is responsible for setting the team’s defensive tone, and two Dallas-area newcomers will step in right away to bolster the Pirates’ defensive athleticism. Josh Lewis averaged 11 points in high school and eight per game at Ranger Junior College as a freshman, beginning his sophomore season with the Pirates in 2012-13. He’s joined by fellow Texan Noel Surles, who may be the Pirates’ most athletic defender early on. Two Illinois transfers, Melvin Rowe and Jarvis Griffin, bring a combined 24 points per game from Waubonsee Community College from their sophomore seasons in Illinois, and Kyle Enloe, Park’s most local newcomer, from Parkville, returns to his home town for his final two seasons of college basketball after playing two years at MCC-Penn Valley south of the river. Transfer guards Canaan Fairley (North Central Missouri College) and Marcus Johnson (UMKC) will further deepen the backcourt bench, along with Barnes, a returner who played half a season for the Pirates in 2011-12 in limited minutes. Kline doesn’t normally single out players, but he is quick to recognize Anorue’s efforts to glue together unfamiliar puzzle pieces early on. At 6-foot-7, Anorue made nine starts and played in 26 games for the Pirates a year ago, averaging 15.5 minutes and 3.5 points per game. “I can’t say enough about what Mike did to bring the guys together from the first day, and really even before that when they were all signed,” Kline said. “He knows this is his senior year and he wanted to make it special. For a guy that didn’t see the starting five as much as he might have liked last year, he’s really stepped up early on this year.” The Pirates begin the season in Olathe, Kan., at the MNU Tipoff Classic against Central Methodist (Friday, 4 p.m.) and MidAmerica Nazarene (Saturday, 5 p.m.). Last sea-son, the Pirates beat the same two teams on the way to a 3-1 start. The home portion of the schedule begins Monday, Nov. 5, when the Pirates host Midland University at 7 p.m. The Pirates’ entire home slate will be carried on the Pirate Sports Network at www.parkathletics.com, beginning Monday when the Pirate Sports Network will team with KHUB radio, 1340 AM, Fremont, Neb., for live video and live audio when the Pirates host Midland at 7 p.m. Pirate Radio, 90.5 FM, KGSP, will serve as a weeknight-only affiliate for select games on the Pirate Sports Network, and in all games in the American Midwest Conference portion of the 2012-13 season will be broadcast. All road games except the Feb. 2 game at Columbia College will be audio-only, and all home games, as well as the game at Columbia, will feature a live-video broadcast.

PARK UNIVERSITY

Park University is a fourth-year mem-ber in the American Midwest Confer-ence, joining in the 2009-10 school

year, rejoining the league after nine years of membership in the MCAC and as an NAIA Independent in basketball. Park previously held membership in the AMC from 1993 to 2000, exiting the league following the spring semester in 2000. Park is one of 10 AMC member insti-tutions, joining Benedictine University at Springfield, Columbia College, Hannibal-LaGrange University, Harris-Stowe State University, Missouri Baptist University, Ste-phens College, William Woods University and Williams Baptist College as returning members. New in 2012-13, Lyon College joins the American Midwest Conference. The AMC sponsors championships in 13 different sports: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s track and field, and volley-ball. The purpose of the American Mid-west Conference is to promote the posi-tive ideals and objectives of athletics, to provide an organization of colleges and universities with similar foundations to engage in athletic contests on an equal basis, to serve as a forum to formulate and solve common problems, to enhance and preserve athletics in their true perspective and to promote athletics in an academic environment. The American Midwest Con-ference also compiles a Presidents Cup, where schools earn points for conference finishes in all sports. William Woods cap-tured the 2011-12 President’s Cup. Park finished second in the standings.

Kenneth Cooper enters his third season as head coach of the Park Uni-versity women’s basketball team after improving his squad’s record for the second straight season in 2011-12. He led the Pirates to a 19-8

overall record and 8-6 AMC mark for a fourth-place regular season finish. In two seasons, Cooper has accumulated a record of 37-19 and a win-ning percentage of .661, which is the highest of any coach in the 32 year history of the program. The Pirates began the 2011-12 campaign with one of the program’s best starts posting a 10-1 record at the holiday break. Park advanced to the semifinals of the AMC Tournament for the second straight season, but lost to No. 1 Columbia 83-67. Vivian Holcomb earned First-Team All-Conference honors for the sec-ond straight season and Brianna Beridon made the Honorable Mention All-Conference team for the second consecutive year. Both were members of Cooper’s first recruiting class at Park. In his first season as head coach, 2010-11, Cooper led the Pirates to the third most wins in a season in program history posting an 18-11 overall record and 9-7 AMC mark finishing the AMC regular season in fourth place. Park increased its win total by 13 during Cooper’s first season after going 5-25 in 2009-10, marking the second greatest turnaround in NAIA Division I Women’s basketball, one win shy from California Baptist’s 14 wins. Cooper had two players earn postseason honors as Vivian Holcomb was the only freshman named to the 2010-11 AMC First-Team All-Confer-ence squad and Brianna Beridon was named AMC Honorable Mention All-Conference. Cooper spent three years as the assistant coach and recruiting coordi-nator at NCAA Division I Mercer University in Macon, Ga., from 2007-2010, and was instrumental in assisting head coach Janell Jones reinvigorate the Bears’ program. Along with his duties as assistant coach at Mercer, Cooper excelled as the recruiting coordinator for the Bears. In three seasons, student-athletes recruited by Cooper earned a First-Team All A-Sun award, three Second-Team all-conference honors, an A-Sun Defensive Player of the Year, eight A-Sun Player of the Week awards, and 18 academic all-conference selections. Prior to joining the Bears, Cooper spent three seasons as an assistant with Seminole State College, helping the team reach the Bi-State Confer-ence Tournament each year during his tenure. Seminole State also finished third at the 2007 NJCAA Region II Tournament. The Belles’ compiled a 51-40 (.560) record during his three-year stint as assistant coach. Also serving as recruiting coordinator for Seminole, Cooper brought in and coached six all-conference nominees, three First-Team all-region performers, a regional Player of the Year and a Second-Team All-NJCAA member. Cooper played collegiately at the University of Montevallo in Monte-vallo, Ala. After redshirting his freshman year, he helped the Falcons win a Gulf South Conference Tournament title during his senior season when he served as team captain. Montevallo also reached the NCAA Division II South Regional finals as the Falcons finished with a 23-10 record in 2004. Cooper received the University of Montevallo Sportsmanship Award in 2004. A native of Fayetteville, Ga., Cooper starred at Fayette County High School before his collegiate playing career at Montevallo. At Fayette Coun-ty, he served as team captain his junior and senior seasons while earning four varsity letters. Cooper graduated from Montevallo in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology. Cooper and his wife Erin, reside in Kansas City, Mo.

2012-13 OUTLOOK

The 2012-13 Park University women’s basketball team will feature a lot of new faces but one thing is sure to remain a constant and that is the team’s focus on the defensive side of the ball. Head coach Kenneth Cooper begins his third year at the helm of the Pirates with a team featuring four returning players and eight new-

comers. Cooper aims to mold the team with his strong defensive mindset as Park tries to top last season’s 19-8 record, which marked the second-most wins in school history behind only a 22-win season in 2003-04. The 37 wins in Cooper’s first two seasons are the most in any two-year span in the program’s 32-year history. The Pirates finished 2011-12 with a record of 8-6 in the American Midwest Conference earning the No. 4 seed in the AMC Tournament before falling to the No. 1 seed Columbia College in the semifinals. Last year’s squad ended the season with the NAIA’s eighth-best scoring de-fense allowing only 54.2 points per game and that is something Park looks to improve even more this year. “I am a defensive-minded coach,” said Cooper. “It is going to take some time to get the team to build the chemistry and relationships they need to play the shut-down defense I want played. We still have to work some of the kinks out of having so many new players. The offense will come, but the defense always needs to be there, and if we are playing our defense we will get easy baskets.” Brianna Beridon, last season’s second leading scorer will be asked to carry the offensive load for the Pirates as she returns for her senior season after earning a 2011-12 AMC Honorable Mention All-Conference selection. The Chino Hills, Calif., native scored an average of 10.7 points per game and added two assists and two steals per game. “Bri can play both the point guard and shooting guard spots,” added Cooper. “We are looking for her to do some scoring from both the inside and the outside. Also returning is a pair of seniors that will be asked to provide a scoring punch from the outside in Joanna Matthews (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) and Carla McKinney (Desoto, Texas). Matthews averaged nearly five points and three rebounds per game despite missing time due to an injury meanwhile McKinney earned the starting nod in 25 of Park’s 27 games. “Joanna was hurt a bit last season, but she is an outside threat so we are looking for her to step up in that capacity. She is also a great on-ball defender,” stated Cooper. “Carla is our floor gen- eral. She distributes the ball, gets people in the right position, and gets us talking on defense. She was a defensive presence for us last year and we need her leadership a lot this season.” Providing depth at both ends of the floor is a pair of transfers with junior Taylor Lloyd (Brook-lyn, N.Y.) and sophomore Jordan Brown (St. Louis, Mo.). Each adds a stalwart presence on the defensive end and will likely matchup with the top scoring threats from the opposition. “Taylor is a great lock-down defender and will probably cover our opponent’s best scorer. She is also great at creating her own shot and can knock them down from the outside which will add some scoring depth,” said Cooper. “Jordan is another great on-ball defender by using her aggressiveness. She can also get to the free throw line and that’s one thing we are looking for this season.” Logging the tough minutes in the post for the Pirates will be junior transfer Jessica Madsen (Duchesne, Utah) and sophomore Kelcie Schiele (Kansas City, Mo.). “Jessica is great 15-foot shooter. She is a very aggressive player and adds that physical pres- ence in the post for the team. She will do all the dirty work we need to get done and pull down rebounds. Kelcie is playing really well right now and competing for minutes at the post spot,” said Cooper Versatility is another key point for the coaching staff to see in the newcomers and that is shown with the players’ ability to use their athleticism and length at both ends of the court. Three additions to the program this season will do exactly that as junior transfer Tiarra Dew- berry (Edmond, Okla.) along with freshmen Imani Joseph (Lakewood, Calif.) and Christy Saldana (Perris, Calif.) “Tiarra can shoot and get to the basket using her raw athleticism. She will help us a lot on the boards while providing some scoring,” added Cooper. “Imani is a great driver and can get to the basket using her athletic ability. She is also long and athletic on the defensive end. Christy has a great mid-range game and is always ready to shoot. She comes off screens exceptionally well and can get to the basket. She knows how to use her length to guard people as well.” Cooper also has two players entering the fold that are currently out of commission with injuries but he expects both transfer students Ashleigh Downs (Kansas City, Kan.) and Amanda Laurenceau (Lincoln, Neb.) to provide quality minutes once they return healthy. “Ashleigh is a hard-nosed guard and a true competitor. She’s physical and can score down low. We are anx- ious to get her back from some knee injuries,” stated Cooper. “Amanda is a great passer but can step out and hit from three-point range. We look for her to spread the defense out with her inside-out game.” The schedule for Park features games with four teams currently ranked in the NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball Coaches’ Preseason Top 25 Poll along with two other teams receiving votes. The Pirates open at home before a stretch of five November road games until a marquee matchup with No. 10 and defending NAIA National Champion Oklahoma City Nov. 17 at Breckon Sports Center. The 18-game AMC regular season gets underway with the start of the New Year as Missouri Baptist makes the trip to Parkville Jan. 3. “We put emphasis on every game no matter if it is non-conference or an AMC game. I am looking to compete and win every game we step on the court. That’s just a mindset we expect here at Park,” said Cooper.
