North Dakota State University is a shining ex-ample of a successful student-focused, land-grant, research institution. With 80,000 living alumni, NDSU commands a powerful niche in higher education and the rest of the nation is noticing its accomplishments.

The Carnegie Commission on Higher Educa-tion named NDSU to the elite “Research University/Very High Research” category, which represents the 108 most successful private and public universities in the United States. The classification is convinc-ing recognition of NDSU’s position as a national research institution.

“We have a strong sense of community and campus pride at NDSU. We are dedicated to the land-grant mission of quality education, leading research and outstanding service,” said President Dean L. Bresciani. “NDSU clearly makes a difference in the lives of students and the vitality of our com-munity, state, region and nation.”

Established in 1890, NDSU has progressed through the decades to become a leader among its peers.

NDSU enrolled 14,399 students during the fall 2011 semester in undergraduate and graduate programs, including about 2,150 graduate and pro-fessional students. More than 1,200 international students from 80 countries attend classes. NDSU’s student-to-faculty ratio stands at 18:1.

NDSU’s outstanding academic departments offer 102 bachelor degree programs, 67 mas-ter’s degree programs, 45 doctoral programs, an educational specialist degree and nine gradu-ate certificate programs. During fall 2010, NDSU

had 720 ranked faculty and lecturers, program administrators and coaches, along with 180 part-time academic staff and 827 graduate assistants and fellows, according to the Office of Institutional Research and Analysis.

The NDSU campus in Fargo consists of 119 buildings on approximately 42 square blocks or 258 acres. The university also has state-of-the-art facili-ties in downtown Fargo. NDSU is located on 18,746 acres of North Dakota land, including the main Agricultural Experiment Station in Fargo and eight research centers throughout the state.

The NDSU Extension Service has 53 local offices across the state and conducts a rigorous education program in agriculture and natural resources; family and consumer sciences; 4-H youth development; and community economic develop-ment and leadership through its county, area and state network of staff. During the program year ending September 2011, the Extension Service’s 4-H Club activities, day camp and after school programs involved more than 21,000 youth in North Dakota. More than 5,700 youth are active in organized 4-H Clubs. During the same period, the Extension Service had more than 500,000 face-to-face contacts with adult learners across the state.

“Our successes and contributions are a grow-ing reality that few can deny,” President Bresciani said. “It is an honor to work in higher education and an honor to be part our work at one of the nation’s top-ranked, student focused, land grant, research universities – where we are today accomplishing and contributing more to our state and nation than ever before in history.”

Why the Bison?North Dakota State University’s athletic teams

have progressed from the “Farmers” in the 1890s to the “Aggies” in the early 1900s, to “Bison,” North Dakota State’s current athletic symbol. It was developed by head football coach Stan Borleske in 1919 because he and members of the football team didn’t like being known as

the Aggies. Borleske wanted a strong and fierce mascot. The Bison was a logical choice. The

great animals once roamed the North Dakota prairie in vast numbers, and over the years Bison

athletic teams added an additional name, the “Thundering Herd.”

Dr. Dean L. Bresciani, President

When he came to North Dakota State University in the summer of 2001, Gene Taylor inherited a department surrounded by a whirlwind of questions.

In his first year as the director of athletics at North Dakota State, Taylor was asked to spearhead a comprehensive study and evaluation of the Bison athletic department. He has guided the athletics program through the unpredictable waters of reclassification to NCAA Division I from Division II.

One of most important pieces of the transition was securing conference affiliations for all 16 sports. The Bison are currently members of The Summit League, Missouri Valley Football Conference and Western Wrestling Conference.

Taylor also played an instrumental part of forming the Great West Football Conference in February 2004, an affiliation that gave the Bison football program an immediate home in Division I. He served as chair of the coaches committee.

The Bison football team won the 2011 FCS national championship in their second playoff appearance. The NDSU men’s basketball, women’s volleyball and softball programs have qualified for NCAA tournaments capped off by softball advancing to the 2009 Super Regional. Individuals representing the Bison women’s golf, track and field, and wrestling have competed at NCAA meets.

Also on the reclassification checklist: fundraising. The NDSU athletics budget has tripled from $5 million in Taylor’s first year to $15 million, while the scholarship endowment has grown to $11.2 million, and Team Makers booster club support has went from $750,000 to $2.3 million. The athletics program is two-thirds of the way in the $32 million Building the Competitive Edge campaign to construct the Sanford Health Athletic Complex.

Twice Taylor has been recognized for his success by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics. He was selected as the FCS Central Region AD of the Year in June 2008 and June 2012.

Taylor received the Blue Key Honor Society Doctor of Service Award, one of the most prestigious honors a NDSU faculty member can be bestowed in April 2012.

A student assistant to the associate athletic director in his undergraduate days at Arizona State University, Taylor came to NDSU after a 15-year stint at Navy (1986-2001) as an administrative assistant, assistant ticket manager, ticket manager, assistant athletic director for tickets and operations, and associate athletic director.

Taylor is a 1980 business management graduate of Arizona State, and he received his master’s degree in sports administration in 1985 from St. Thomas University in Florida.

He worked in the ticket office at Southern Methodist University in 1985-86 directly before joining the Naval Academy and was in the private restaurant business before that for five years. His tenure at Navy included serving as the commissioner of the five-team Collegiate Sprint Football League that includes Army, Navy, Penn, Princeton and Cornell.

Taylor and his wife, Cathy, are the parents of a daughter, Casey, and a son, Jared.

Gene Taylor,Athletic Director

Lynn Dorn, Women’s Athletic Director Enthusiasm, innovation and hard work are the cornerstones to Lynn Dorn’s remarkable 35-year record at North Dakota State University. In Dorn’s tenure as the director of women’s athletics, the Bison women’s teams have seven national titles, 62 North Central Conference titles, 21 Summit League championships and eight conference all-sports trophies to their credit. Three Bison competitors have been named the Honda Broderick Division II Most Outstanding Female Athlete, five received the NCC’s Stan Marshall Award, and there have been 136 All-Americans in six sports since 1981. In the classroom, the student-athletes’ academic achievement mirrors their athletic excellence. Thirty-one women have been selected for 49 CoSIDA Academic All-America® awards and 17 have earned NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships.

Dorn was named one of the five most influential people in Division II athletics by College Sports magazine in 1995, one of seven administrators of the year in 2002 by the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators, and was named the Women’s Basketball Coaches

Association Administrator of the Year in 1997. She sees her role as a facilitator who empowers coaches to use their individual skills while working within a framework of common goals and themes. Dorn graduated from Bemidji State in 1972 and earned a master’s degree at Minnesota in 1977.

the SUMMit LeaGUe “Ascending” and “improving” are common adjectives used in media coverage of The Summit League as it continues its renaissance. Consisting of nine member institutions with over 3,000 student-athletes competing in 19 championship sports, The Summit League has enjoyed unprecedented success and development in recent history. Since rebranding as The Summit League in 2007, the league has produced 54 All-Americans, 37 Capital One Academic All-America® selections and seven NCAA championships. In the past seven seasons, Summit League teams have achieved final national rankings in six different sports, won NCAA regional championships in two sports and advanced in three additional NCAA team championship tournaments. That level of success carries into both the class-room and athletic competition. Originally formed in 1982 as the Association of Mid-Continent Universities and later known as the Mid-Continent Conference, The Summit League is in its sixth year of rebranding that followed its 25th anniversary and coincided with the Summit Plan, a strategic plan that places a renewed emphasis on improving the academic and athletic performances of all league student-athletes. The Summit League has a combined enrollment of more than 144,000 at nine universities: IPFW (Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne), IUPUI (Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis), UMKC (University of Missouri-Kansas City), the University of Nebraska Omaha, North Dakota State University, Oakland University, University of South Dakota, South Dakota State University, and Western Illinois University. The league has two associate members with Eastern Illinois University competing in swimming and diving and Oral Roberts University competing in men’s soccer. These member institutions pride themselves on providing quality athletic, academic and social experiences for their student-athletes. The Summit League sponsors 19 championship sports, which include: baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s indoor track and field, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, men’s and women’s tennis, and volleyball. The league champion receives automatic bids to the NCAA tournament in all applicable sports. Since its inception in 1982, The Summit League has had several transcen-dent moments on the national stage. In 1986, Cleveland State upset third-seeded Indiana in the first round of the NCAA men’s basketball tournament on its way to the Sweet 16. Valparaiso captured the nation’s attention when Bryce

Drew hit “the shot” to defeat No. 4 seed Mississippi in an NCAA first-round game and spark its 1998 Sweet 16 run. More recently, the Oral Roberts base-ball program finished the 2004 campaign nationally ranked and became the first Summit League school to reach the NCAA Super Regionals in 2006. Three years later, North Dakota State became the league’s first softball team to win an NCAA regional and advance to the Super Regional round. The league has produced nine NCAA champions, four Olympic medalists, and several All-Americans in the sports of track and field, swimming and diving, and cross country. Numerous professionals and several draft choices have come directly from The Summit League, including three Major League Baseball first-round picks, a pair of NBA first-rounders and one WNBA selection. Former Summit Leaguers Kevin Duckworth (NBA) and Kevin Seitzer (MLB) each were two-time all-stars during their professional careers. Recent and historical success coupled with an increased growth among its membership base gives The Summit League a promising future on the landscape of college athletics.
