HEAD COACHSEVENTH SEASONRHODE ISLAND ‘95

JESSICA SMITH

2012-13 will be the seventh season for Jessica Smith as the 15th head coach in New Haven women’s basketball history. Through her tenure, Smith has collected two regular-season conference titles, a

pair of trips to the conference championship game and an appearance in the 2007 NCAA Northeast Regional.

Smith mentored Bria Moore, the Northeast-10 Rookie of the Year, in 2011-12. Moore represents one of 11 student-athletes returning this winter as Smith eyes her fi fth trip to the postseason with the Chargers.

In Coach Smith’s fourth season she led the Chargers to their eighth straight postseason appearance. The Chargers advanced to the Quarterfi nals of the Northeast-10 Conferance Championship Tournament after defeating Southern Connecticut 81-65 in the fi rst round.

Smith’s third season she helped lead the way for the Chargers to break into quite possibly the most prestegious Division II women’s basketball conference in the nation, the Northeast-10 Conference. The 2008-09 season was highlighted by a season-opening 69-68 victory over nationally ranked No. 10 Holy Family. The Chargers also posted their first NE-10 win on November 22 in a 56-55 win at Le Moyne College. The Chargers advanced to their fi rst NE-10 Championship tournament as the 11th seed, and pulled off an 80-74 upset of sixth seed Assumption in the opening round.

Coach Smith’s second season with the Chargers was highlighted by a nearly perfect, 19-1 conference record. The team’s only conference loss of the regular season came in a 79-69 loss at Queens College on February 6. Smith help guide the Chargers to eight consecutive wins to close out the end of the regular season and into the fi rst two rounds of the conference championship tournament. UNH was one of the region’s top teams all season long, winning 13 of their fi nal 16 games heading into the ECC Tournament. The Chargers scored 70 or more points in 12 of those games and topped 80 points four times throughout the season, including two games over 100.

Coach Smith found success quickly in her first season,

guiding the Chargers to their second consecutive East Coast Conference championship and the team’s second NCAA Northeast Regional berth in a row.

Smith came to UNH from Miami University of Ohio, where she served as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the RedHawks for fi ve seasons. In 2004, Miami won the Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular-season title and advanced to the second round of the WNIT. In 2003, the RedHawks won the Mid-American Conference’s East Division.

Prior to her time at Miami of Ohio, Smith spent three successful seasons as head girls basketball coach at Bishop Hartley High School in Columbus, Ohio. At Bishop Hartley, her teams posted an impressive 66-12 record and captured the Ohio state championship in 2000. The team also advanced to the state Final Four in 2001. Following Bishop Hartley’s state title in 2000, Smith was named Ohio Coach of the Year by the Ohio Coaches Association, the Associated Press and the Columbus Dispatch.

A 1995 graduate of the University of Rhode Island, Smith served as a student assistant coach with the Rams from 1992-95, and was hired as a full-time assistant for the 1995-96 season. That season, URI made its fi rst-ever NCAA Tournament appearance while winning a share of the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship.

Following the 1995-96 season, she moved on to Fordham University, where she spent the next two seasons as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator before heading to Ohio and the head coaching position at Bishop Hartley for the 1998-99 season.

During her six years at UNH ten players have received All-Conference, All-American and All-Academic awards. Ashley Hilton led the Chargers in Smith’s fi rst year and was named to the Kodak/WBCA All-American Honorable Mention team and the Division II Bulletin All-American Fourth Team. Hilton was also named the ECC Player of the Year, while Tristan Jackson and Briiana Rende also received All-ECC honors in ‘07.

In Smith’s second season Lauren Hood was a First Team All-ECC selection, while Briiana Rende was named to the All-ECC Second Team. Alysia Saunders was also named to the ECC

One of the youngest women’s basketball teams in the Northeast-10 in 2011-12 is now one of the most experienced as the University of New Haven returns 11 student-athletes – including its top-fi ve leading scorers – for the 2012-13 campaign. The seventh season on the sideline for Head Coach Jessica Smith will be defi ned by that experience as the Chargers eye a return to the postseason.

BackcourtNew Haven’s three co-captains are all from the backcourt: senior Nikita Reddy and juniors Anh-Dao Tran and Audrey Cunningham. Tran was the Chargers’ leading scorer last season with 14.6 points per game – a number fueled by a team-best 41 three-pointers. One of two New Haven student-athletes to start all 26

contests, she also distributed 4.2 assists per game and shot nearly 90 percent from the free throw line at 62-for-69. Reddy is also a deep-threat with 30 three-pointers made last season en route to 6.0 points per outing. Cun-ningham, who averaged 4.8 points and 2.2 rebounds per game in 2011-12, will not take the court this season due to injury.

Returning for her sophomore campaign is Aquillin Hayes. The 5-8 guard from Harlem, N.Y. produced one of the most well-rounded statlines for New Haven as a rookie with 7.0 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game in addition to a team-high 32 blocked shots.

26 games last season, including eight starts, and proved to be another weapon in Coach Smith’s stable of long-range threats with 22 three-pointers while netting 4.2 points per game.

Briana Bradford from Waterbury, Conn. will be relied upon to make an immediate impact in her freshman season. A New Haven Register All-State selection as a senior, Bradford’s out-standing ball-handling skills and defense will likely earn her a spot in the starting rotation.

Fellow freshman Lauren Herbert will also see signifi cant time in her rookie season. The North Reading, Mass. native will add depth at both wing positions throughout the 2012-13 campaign.

Also a part of the rotation in the Chargers’ backcourt are junior Amber Martinez, who took the court in three games last winter, and sophomore newcomer LaTanza Britts, who spent her freshman season at Iowa Wesleyan College.

FrontcourtThe New Haven front court is highlighted by one of the most versatile weapons in the Northeast-10 Conference – 2011-12 Rookie of the Year Bria Moore. Moore ranked second on the club with 12.6 points per game and led the Chargers on the boards with 7.7 rips per contest. She knocked down 32 treys while shooting 40 percent from beyond the arc and shot better than 82 percent from the free throw line at 69-for-84.

Sophomore Ashley LeBlanc saw most of the team’s minutes at the center position last

winter, averaging 6.2 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. LeBlanc stepped into the starting lineup following an injury to Ayana Duncan-son. Duncanson posted 6.4 points and 6.0 re-bounds per contest through 10 games before being sidelined for the remainder of 2011-12 and is expected to return at full-strength for her junior campaign.

Rykema Stone also spent time in the middle last winter before succumbing to injury, av-eraging 4.2 points and 4.1 rebounds in 14 games, including four starts, as a freshman.

Spelling the starters in the front court will be incoming freshman Amy Park. Junior Ana Obella was also slated to add depth in the front court, but suffered a season-ending in-jury in the preseason.

ScheduleA diffi cult schedule is a given in the North-east-10, and the Chargers’ non-conference slate will provide little relief from stiff competi-tion. New Haven’s 2012-13 slate includes the top fi ve seeds from last season’s NCAA Divi-sion II East Region Championship, including reigning Northeast-10 Champion and National Semifi nalist Bentley.

The top 10 teams in conference qualify for the Northeast-10 Championship, which will be held from March 1-9 at campus sites with the higher seed hosting each matchup. The NCAA Division II East Region Champion-ship is set for March 15-18 at a site to be determined, and the Division II Elite Eight will be held from March 26-29 at Saint Mary’s University in San Antonio, Texas.

1987 NATIONAL CHAMPIONS • FIVE NCAA REGIONAL APPEARANCES • FOLLOW @UNH_WBB

The Northeast-10 Conference is an NCAA Division II conference that was established in 1979. The NE-10 consists of 16 member institutions that are located throughout the Northeast including Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York and Vermont.

The institutions that make up the Northeast-10 are Adelphi University (Garden City, N.Y.), American International College (Springfi eld, Mass.), Assumption College (Worcester, Mass.), Bentley University (Waltham, Mass.), Franklin Pierce University (Rindge, N.H.), Le Moyne College (Syracuse, N.Y.), University of Massachusetts Lowell (Lowell, Mass.), Merrimack College (North Andover, Mass.), University of New Haven (West Haven, Conn.), Pace University (Pleasantville, N.Y.), Saint Anselm College (Manchester, N.H.), Saint Michael’s College (Colchester, Vt.), College of Saint Rose (Albany, N.Y.), Southern Connecticut State University (New Haven, Conn.), Southern New Hampshire University (Manchester, N.H.), and Stonehill College (Easton, Mass.).

The 16 member institutions are spread geographically from Syracuse, New York to Boston, Massachusetts and from Burlington, Vermont to Long Island, New York. Many of the members are located in or around the metropolitan areas of Albany, Boston, New Haven, Worcester, and New York.

The Conference most recently welcomed the University of New Haven in 2008 and Adelphi University in 2009, adding to the powerful union of strong academic and athletic colleges and universities.

The Northeast-10 has evolved into a membership committed to competitive athletics programs that emphasize the education on and off the fi eld of its more than 5,500 student athletes.

Counted among the many accomplishments of our institutions are NCAA Division II National Championships in women’s basketball, fi eld hockey, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse,

men’s soccer, women’s track & fi eld, and men’s and women’s swimming & diving.

This past year, 47 teams representing the Northeast-10 saw their name on NCAA selection days as Division II national championship fi elds were announced. The 47 teams represented fourteen different institutions.

During the 2010-2011 academic year, two Northeast-10 teams claimed national titles, as UMass Lowell won the fi eld hockey championship and Adelphi won the women’s lacrosse national crown. Indivudally, New Haven’s Shannon Gagne won fi ve national titles at the indoor and outdoor track and fi eld championship meets, Stonehill’s Corey Thomas was the national champion in the high jump, and Southern Connecticut’s Amanda Thomas took home the gold medal in the 200-yard individual medley at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.

The Saint Rose women’s soccer team also claimed its fi rst national championship in 2011.

From the fi eld of play to the class room, the Northeast-10 honored a number of student-athletes for their academic accomplishments. The conference honored close to 200 student-athletes throughout the year that excelled at a high level on the fi eld and in the classroom as members of the academic all conference teams. Additionally, 2,917 student-athletes representing each of the sixteen schools earned a 3.0 GPA or higher and were named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll last year.

Today’s Northeast-10 Conference remains focused on complementing the academic integrity and missions of the member institutions with a commitment to a broad-based championship program, as evidenced by the 23 sports the Conference offers in championship play, the most of any Division II conference.

Deborah Chin, Associate Vice President, Director of Athletics and Recreation

Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D., University PresidentSince becoming president of the University of New Haven in 2004, Steven H. Kaplan, Ph.D. has led the University of New Haven through a period of remarkable growth and development. In the past fi ve years alone, enrollment has grown by 34 percent to more than 6,400 undergraduate and graduate students, who

hail from 35 states and some 45 countries. Full-time undergraduate enrollment has grown by 59 percent and applications have increased by 176 percent. During this time, the University has completed over $100 million in construction projects and has launched 15 new academic programs.

UNH now ranks among the top comprehensive universities in the North and boasts nationally ranked programs in a number of majors across business, criminal justice, engineering, forensic science, and the liberal arts and sciences. In recognition of his contributions to transforming the University, Dr. Kaplan was named “Businessman of the Year” by Business New Haven magazine in 2008.

President Kaplan also was awarded the 2011 William M. Burke Presidential Award for Experiential Education by the National Society for Experiential Education. The award recognizes President Kaplan’s efforts to make UNH a national leader in experiential education, requiring every undergraduate student to complete an internship, an academic service learning experience, international study or a faculty-mentored research

project before graduation.

Previously, Dr. Kaplan was chancellor and professor of English at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, the only four-year branch campus of the University of Virginia and one of the nation’s best public colleges, according to U. S. News & World Report.

Dr. Kaplan began his teaching career in 1982 as an Instructor of English at the University of Maryland, European Division. From 1985-1989, he served as Visiting Lecturer in American Studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Tübingen, Germany – one of the oldest and most highly regarded universities in Europe. After completing his doctoral studies at Eberhard-Karls Universität, he returned to the U.S. to teach English at the University of Southern Colorado. Within three years, he was made department chair, serving in that capacity for two years before becoming Director of the Center for International Studies.

Dr. Kaplan also served as dean of Arts and Humanities at SUNY College at Buffalo and as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Butler University.

In addition to earning his Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at Eberhard-Karls Universität, Dr. Kaplan holds a Master of Arts degree (with a concentration in philosophy, German and English) from Eberhard-Karls Universität and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Dr. Kaplan is the author of a book on American translations of the poetry of Rainer Maria Rilke; a book on Tim O’Brien’s fi ction, published by the University of

South Carolina Press; and an anthology of international war stories, published by the University Press of Colorado. He also has written a number of scholarly essays.

Dr. Kaplan and his wife, Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan, are both ardent opera buffs and love to ballroom dance, hike and downhill ski. They share a great love for the visual and performing arts and have traveled to more than 30 countries during their 35 years together, including Tanzania, where they hiked up Mt. Kilimanjaro. They have a son and three daughters.

Dr. Kaplan grew up in Chicago, the son of a shoe store owner and an actress-comedienne. He said his stepfather, Irving Glovin, taught him to love ideas and appreciate the contributions we all need to make to good causes. Irv Glovin was a good friend of Oskar Schindler, was instrumental in getting the story out in book and fi lm form (he was associate producer of the fi lm), and is President of the Oskar Schindler Humanitarian Foundation. Dr. Kaplan also serves on the board of the Foundation.

Anemone Schweizer-Kaplan grew up in Southwest Germany. She holds the equivalent of an American M.A. in Secondary Education and taught at a German high school. She is a ceramics artist and taught German and pottery as an adjunct faculty member in Colorado and Virginia.

Deborah Chin became the school’s fourth Director of Athletics in 1993, and currently oversees a department which sponsors 16 NCAA Division II varsity sports. She was elected to the prestigious position of Chair for the NCAA’s Division II Management Council for 2008 and was promoted to Associate Vice President, Director of

Athletics and Recreation in 2010.

UNH Athletics has enjoyed a high level of success across the board during Chin’s tenure as Director of Athletics, advancing to NCAA tournament over 50 times in 17-plus years. UNH has recently made a number of capital improvements to athletic and recreational facilities, including the construction of the multi-million dollar David A. Beckerman Student Recreation Center, a $1.3 million synthetic turf renovation of Kayo Field (soccer and lacrosse), as well as installation of state-of-the-art blue and gold synthetic turf at the new Ralph F. DellaCamera Stadium. In 2007, Chin spearheaded efforts to re-instate football as a varsity program and fi nd UNH a new athletics conference that best fi ts the institution’s long-term academic and athletic aspirations. Both goals were accomplished when UNH announced on November 13, 2007 that it had been accepted as a full member of the prestigious Northeast-10 Conference, effective the 2008-09 academic year. After a fi ve-year hiatus, the Charger football team returned to the gridiron in 2009, and have since won back-to-back conference championships and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfi nals.

A member of the University of New Haven staff since 1975, Chin began her UNH career as Coordinator of Women’s Athletics. She was responsible for starting the women’s intercollegiate athletic program at UNH, coaching volleyball, tennis, basketball and softball in the early years. Chin eventually surrendered all head coaching responsibilities, except volleyball, when she was promoted to Associate Director of Athletics in 1979.

Among her numerous honors, Chin was named the NACWAA NCAA Division II Administrator of the Year in 2009 after serving as the D-II Management Council Chair. In 2007, the Connecticut Sportswriters’ Alliance presented Chin with the Gold Key Award, the state’s top sporting honor which recognizes significant contributions to athletics in the State of Connecticut. Chin won the NACDA/Continental Airlines Athletic Director of the Year for the Northeast Region in 1998-99 and was awarded the NACWAA Josten’s District I Administrator of the Year Award in 1997. Chin won the National Association for Girls and Women in Sports Presidential Award in March 1997 and was the Connecticut Post Woman of the Year in 1993.
