Barclay Radebaugh enters his eighth season as head men’s basketball coach at Charleston Southern and looks to build on a 2011-2012 campaign which proved to be one of the most successful in program history.

Radebaugh earned Big South Conference Coach of the Year honors for his efforts, as the Bucs went19-12andadvancedtotheconferencetournamentsemifinalsbehindastartinglineup which featured three freshmen and a junior college transfer. CSU’s 19 wins were the program’s mostsince1994-1995,astheBucssecuredtheirfirstwinningseasonsince1996-1997.Senior Kelvin Martin led the way for Radebaugh’s young group, as the forward played his way onto the

all-conferencefirstteamwhileearninganodastheleague’sdefensiveplayeroftheyearforasecondconsecutiveseason.RadebaughwasalsoinstrumentalinthegrowthoffreshmenguardsSaahNimleyandArlonHarper,asthetwostarted56ofapossible62gamesandwereunanimous selections to the conference’s all-freshmen team. The freshmen duo helped power a CSU offense which featured outstanding balanceandfeaturedfourplayersindoublefiguresforthemajorityoftheseason(Martin,Nimley,Harper,andMathiangMuo).Asateam,CSUfinishedtheseason22ndnationallyinscoring(76.9ppg),20thinthree-pointfieldgoalspergame(8.4),30thinthree-pointfieldgoalpercentage(38.0%),40thinstealspergame(8.1)and27thinturnovermargin(+2.7).

The Bucs opened the season in style when they led Big 12 power Kansas State by 14 at halftime, before taking the Wildcats all the way to the wireina72-67loss.Radebaugh’ssquadalsoenjoyedahome-and-awaysweepofAtlanticSunfoeStetson,a33-pointhomevictoryoverVMI,aroadwinoverLiberty,an18-pointblowoutofthenfirst-placeCampbell,atriumphatBigSouthregularseasonandtournamentchampionandpreivously undefeated UNC Asheville, a home win over rival Winthrop, a sweep of Presbyterian and a conference tournament win over Liberty. CSUalsocontinuedtoenjoyadistincthomecourtadvantage,postinga12-2marktoimproveto35-7attheBucDomeoverthelastthreeseasons.

CSUtookastepforwardin2010-2011aswell,asitwent16-6overalland9-9intheBigSouth,finishingsixthintheconference.TheBucswereparticularlygoodathome,astheywontheirfirsttengamesinsideBuccaneerFieldhouseandteamedwiththewomen’sprogramtoholdthedistinctionofbeingoneofthelastfourschoolsinDivisionItohavebothteamsundefeatedontheirhomecourt.TheBucswouldconcludetheseason12-3athome,highlightedbyasecondstraightwinoverTheCitadel,andconferencevictoriesoverthelikesofrivalsWinthropandUNCAsheville.

InhisfirstseasonatCSU,RadebaughputhisimprintontheprogramimmediatelybyleadingtheBucstoa13-16overallrecordandanappearanceintheBigSouthTournamentSemifinals.TheBuccaneersalsobeattheCollegeofCharlestonforthefirsttimesince1988,andcapturedthecitychampionshipforthefirsttimesince1986withavictoryoverTheCitadel.

TheBucsfollowedthisperformancewithasecondconsecutivecitychampionshipin2006.BighomevictoriesoverHighPoint,LibertyandCoastalCarolinahighlightedhisthirdseasonatthehelm.TheBuccaneersalsosetaBigSouthrecordwith10FreshmanoftheWeekhonors,cappedoffbyOmarCarterearningBigSouthFreshmanoftheYear.

UnderthedirectionofRadebaugh,JamarcoWarrenhadabreakoutsophomorecampaignduringthe2008-09season,breakingtheCSUsingleseason record for three pointers made with 99.

Radebaughhasanimpressivecoachingresumefromacareerthatbeganin1986asastudentassistantcoachatEastTennesseeStateunderLesRobinson.AfterstopsatWoffordandFurman,Radebaughbeganaseven-yearstayatSouthCarolina.

WhileatSouthCarolina,theGamecockswontheSECregularseasontitleandreceivedanumbertwoseedinthe1997NCAAtournament.In1998,theGamecocksfinishedtheseasonranked14thandreceiveda number three seed in the NCAA tournament. At South Carolina, Radebaugh was the position coach for USC’s all-time leading scorer B.J. McKie, all-time three-point scorer Jamel Bradley, and all-time stealsleaderChuckEidson,thecousinofformerBuccaneerDirectorof Operations Sean Sweeney.

Radebaugh continued his success as an assistant at Winthrop University,helpingtheEaglestoback-to-backBigSouthConferencetitles and an NCAA tournament berth in 2002.

Radebaugh then spent one season as the head coach at Queens UniversityinCharlotte,guidingtheRoyalstoa21-8recordoverallanda14-4recordintheCarolinas-VirginiaAthleticConference.There, Radebaugh coached Spencer Ross who was named the SportingNewsDivisionIINationalPlayeroftheYear.SpencerwastheonlyDivisionIIplayerinthecountryinvitedtothePlymouth,Va.NBA pre-draft camp.

ThenextandfinalstopbeforeCSUwouldbeservingasanassistantcoachatMiami.Inhisoneseasonattheschool,theHurricanesfinished16-13,whichwasgoodenoughforasixthplacefinishintheACCandaninvitationtotheNIT.RadebaughservedasthepositioncoachforGuillermoDiazwhowassecond-teamall-ACC,andRobertHite,whoearnedHonorableMentionall-ACChonors.BothDiazand

HitewentontoplayintheNBA.Diazwasdraftedinthesecondroundby the Los Angeles Clippers, and Hite enjoyed a stint with the Miami Heat.

A native of Lincolnton, North Carolina, Radebaugh received his master of arts degree in physical education from the University of SouthCarolinain1996andearnedhisbachelorofsciencedegreeinbusinessadministrationatEastTennesseeStatein1987.

What is your program philosophy?We want to use basketball to teach our players about life and to give our players an opportunity to have a lifelong relationship with Jesus Christ.#2, to graduate players. We want every player who completes his eligibility atCSUtoleavewithadegree.#3,Wedesiretobuildcharacter.Sportsisa great tool to build character, lifelong character, and we take every op-portunity to do that in our program. #4 is to grow leaders. We want each of our players to leave our program not only understanding leadership, but having an opportunity to display that leadership.

What can we expect from a Barclay Radebaugh-coached team?We have four pillars that we want to be the foundation of our team. #1,wewanttoprepareextremelyhard.Wewanttoleaveeverypracticeandeverygameknowingthatweexertedeveryounceofenergythatwepossibly have.#2 is to play great defense. We want to pressure the ball and take teams out of things that they are comfortable doing.#3,toreboundwithapassion,bothontheoffensiveendandthedefensiveend. #4istosharetheball.Wewantourteamstoplaywithgreatunselfishness,and to turn down a good shot to get a great shot.

After whom do you pattern your coaching?I’vehadthreemainmentorsinmycareer:EddieFogler,GreggMarshallandAlanLeForce.AlmosteverythingIdoyoucantracebacktooneofthesethreecoaches.Ilovethesethreecoaches.IalsolearnedagreatdealfromFrankHathduringmytimeatMiami.Heisatremendouscoach.Mygreatestmentorsare,ofcourse,myparents.IamblessedtohavethemotherandfatherthatIdo.

How does this year’s team match up with others you have coached? Ihaveagreatfeelingaboutthisteam.Theycometoworkeveryday.Theyare willing defenders and really work on the defensive end of the court. We are very deep and we will use that depth. As long as we defend, rebound, sharetheballandplaywithgreatpassionwewillbefine.

What are the expectations for this year’s team?Iamveryexcitedtoseethisteamgrow.Thereissomethingspecialaboutthis group. We compete; we care about each other and we have great leadership.Wecanplaywitheverybodyonourschedule.Iexpecttoim-prove every day and put ourselves in a position to compete for a Big South Championship.

How will the nonconference schedule prepare the team for the Big South season?Wow,whataschedule.Thisisbyfarourmostdifficultschedule.Everygame is challenging. We are looking forward to the non-conference sched-ule with hopes that it will prepare us for the Big South season.

What is the importance of having so many impact players return?Leadershipandexperience.Ourreturnersunderstandwhatweexpectfromthemandtheyhaveaverysolidbaseofexperience.

What is your favorite memory from coaching?Ihavemanytremendousmemories.Ihaveenjoyedeverydayofmycareer.Somehighlightshavebeen:winningtheSECregularseasonchampionshipat the University of South Carolina; every NCAA Tournament has been extremelyspecial;takingourteamtoPolandwasamemorythatI’llneverforget. But my greatest memories have been having the opportunity to sharethejourneywithmyfamily,whoIlovesomuch.Ilovebeingacoach.

McKie was instrumental in the growth of freshman guards Saah Nimley and Arlon Harper, as the duo started a combined

56gamesandhelpedpoweraCSUoffensewhichfinishedtheseason22ndinscoring,20thinthree-pointfieldgoalspergame,and30thinthree-pointfieldgoalpercentage.Fortheirindividualefforts,NimleyandHarperwereeachnamedtotheBigSouthAll-Freshmanteam.TheBucsalsoreceivedstrongeffortsfromjuniorJeremySextonandsophomore Sheldon Strickland, as well as a breakout campaign from sophomore Chris Grier.

McKie joined the coaching ranks after completing a professional playing career in Europe,andisnowreunitedwithRadebaugh,whoservedasanassistantcoachduringMcKie’s time at USC.

AnativeofNorfolk,Va.,McKiefinishedhisplayingcareeratSouthCarolina(1996-99)asthe Gamecocks’ all-time leading scorer with 2,119 career points and was honored by the SoutheastConferenceasanSECBasketballLegendaspartofitsclassof2011.McKiewasnamedthe1996SECFreshmanoftheYear,andisjustthe12thplayerinleaguehistorytoearnAssociatedPressFirstTeamSEChonorsforthreeseasons.Thetwo-timeteamcaptainplayedin123consecutivegamesattheguardposition,scoringindoublefigures111timesandrecording38gameswith20ormorepoints.McKieaveraged17.3pointspergameasseniorandfinishedthirdinSECscoringthatseason.In1997,McKieaveraged17.4ppgtoleadtheGamecockstotheirfirsteverSECbasketballtitle.SouthCarolinaappearedintheNCAATournamentinboth1997and1998,ranking14thinthenationandreceivingthenumberthreeseedinthe1998NCAATournament.HeisoneoffiveGamecockplayerstohave his jersey retired.

FollowinghiscareeratUSC,McKiecompetedprofessionallyforanumberofteamsoverseas.McKieplayedforBCMGravelinesinFrance,KeravnosinCyprus,aswellasAvitosGeissenandTBB Trier in Germany. He also spent time with Pepsi Caserta and Nuova Pallacanestro Pavia inItaly;MaccabiHaifaHeatandHapoelAfulainIsrael.In2004,McKiewasnamedaBasketballBudesliga(PlayeroftheYear)whilecompetinginGermany.Hewasalsoa2001CBAAll-Starwhile playing for the Connecticut Pride of the Continental Basketball Association.

McKie is married to the former Brittany Brooks. He has one son, Justin.

Appalachian State, 2004 * Second year at Charleston Southern Ahmad Smith enters his second year as an assistant to head coach Barclay Radebaugh in 2012-2013.Alongwithfellowfirst-yearassistantcoachesBradDobbelsandBJMcKie,Smith made an immediate impact in his return to college coaching after spending three years in several capacities,includingthatofheadcoach,inIreland.

A former player and coach at Appalachian State, Smith helped foster the growth of freshman forwardsCedrickBowenandPaulGombwerin2011-2012.Bowenstartedthefirst22gamesof theseasonfortheBucsatcenter,whileGombwerstartedthefinalnineandwasaforceonthe offensiveglass,ranking12thintheBigSouthwith79fortheyear(betterthan2.5pergame).The

duoalsoprovidedsomeinsidescoringpunchaswelltohelpCSUtoa19-winseasonforthefirsttimesince1994-1995.

Radebaugh had this to say about the addition to his coaching staff: “Ahmad is a super addition to our staff. His character and commitment quicklybecameapparentduringtheinterviewprocess.Ahmadwillbeagreatassettoourprograminrecruitingandonthefloorcoaching.Healsohasmanyvaluablelifeexperiencesthatwillbenefitourplayersashejoinswithourmainmissionofgrowingandmentoringyoungmenbothonandoffthecourt.WearethrilledthatAhmadandhiswife,Theresa,arejoiningtheCSUbasketballfamily.”

SmithcametoCSUfromDublin,Ireland,wherehehonedhiscoachingskillsfrom2008on.Mostrecently,SmithservedasthetechnicaldirectorfortheTempleogueBasketballClub.HewasalsotheheadbasketballcoachfortheMen’sDivisionI,U17andU18teams.In2011,theDivisionImen’steamfinishedfifth,improvingfivespotsfromtheyearbeforeSmith’sarrival.

Priortothat,Smithwastheheadmen’sandwomen’sbasketballcoachatInstituteofTechnologyTallaghtCollegeinDublin,finishedasthe2011women’steamchampionsandthe2011men’steamrunners-up.Heholdsacareer74-45recordasaheadcoach,includingtimewiththeColaisteEannaHighSchoolU19Boys(2009-2011),andtheShamrockRoversHoopsProfessionalSuperleague,wherehecoachedfromAugust2008toMarch2010.

BeforeleavingforIreland,SmithwasanassistantcoachatAppalachianStateUniversityfrom2004-08,helpingleadtheMountaineerstoaschool-record25winsin2006-07,aNorthDivisionregularseasonSoConChampionshipin2008andaSanJuanShootoutTournamentchampionshipin2007.

Asaplayer,SmithspenttwoyearsatCedarValleyJuniorCollege,earningNJCAAAll-American honors while leading his team to an NJCAA National Championship in 2001. He earned the school’s student-athlete award and earned multiple conference honors, including all-conference and freshman of the year honors, before moving on to play two years for the Mountaineers in the Southern Conference.

Charleston Southern,1989 * Second year at Charleston Southern BradDobbelsbeginshissecondyearonCoachBarclayRadebaugh’sstaffin2012-2013,following anaccomplishedrunastheheadcoachatnearbyGooseCreekHighSchool.Dobbels,aformer standoutfortheBaptistCollegeBuccaneersfrom1987-1989,madeanimmediateimpactinhis firstseason,helpingtheBucstoa19-12recordandaberthintheBigSouthTournament Semifinals.Dobbels’coachingacumenwasparticularlybeneficialtowardCSU’soffensive production,whichprovedtobeprolificin2011-2012.Fourplayersaveragedindoublefiguresfor much of the year as the Bucs concluded the season ranked 22nd in the country in scoring, 20th in three-pointfieldgoalspergame,and30thinthree-pointfieldgoalpercentage.

“WeareverypleasedtoannouncetheadditionofBradDobbelstoourcoachingstaff,”saidRadebaughatthetimeofDobbels’hiringinsummer2011.“Bradisanoutstandingcoachwhohaspreparedhimselfwellforthisnextstep.HehasledGooseCreekHighSchooltonewandexcitinglevels of success. Lechlitner joins the CSU coaching staff in the fall of 2012 after serving as a graduate assistant with the Buccaneers over the past two seasons, working under Radebaugh.

The Big South Conference took a big step in its younghistoryintheFallof2002when,forthefirsttime in its 19-year history, the League crowned a football champion.

FootballhadalwaysbeenalongrangegoaloftheConference. Intheearly 1990s, footballseemedon the horizon in the Big South, as CharlestonSouthern fielded its first team in 1991 and theConference added Liberty as a new member, which was already playing on the gridiron. However, football never got off the ground in the early part of the decade as other issues came to the forefront, including the Big South’s emergence as a basketball conference. The League was awardeditsfirstautomaticbidtotheNCAAmen’sbasketball championship in 1992 and football was put on the back burner while basketball began to flourish.

Theideawasrevivedin1997whenElonjoinedtheBig South. That gave the Conference three full-time members with football programs -- half the numberneededtoberecognizedasaConferenceby the NCAA. Two years later on Nov. 10, 1999, Coastal Carolina University announced it would addfootballbytheFallof2003.Thewheelswereset in motion to establish a Conference home for the League’s football-playing members.

After attempts to form a joint football conference with the Atlantic Sun Conference failed, the Big South began recruiting more members to join its fledgling football league. On May 23,2001, the dream became a reality when the Big South’sCouncilofChiefExecutiveOfficersvotedunanimously to add football as the Conference’s 18thchampionshipsport.Itbecamethefirstsportaddedsince1997whenmen’sandwomen’sindoortrack were incorporated as championship sports.

Shortly after the approval of football, the Big South’s recruiting efforts paid off, as the addition of Gardner-Webb University as an associate football member was announced on June 20, 2001. There were hopes that with the addition of the Runnin’ Bulldogs, a four-team League could begin play later that Fall, with Coastal Carolina

comingintothefoldinthe2003season.However,schedulingconflictscouldnotbeworkedout,sotheFallof2002wasdesignatedasthekick-offtoBigSouthFootball.TheBigSouthcontinuedtolookfor additional members, with a goal of eventually havingsevenoreightplayingmembers.OnDec.10, 2001, one of the oldest programs in the state ofVirginia--VirginiaMilitaryInstitute,announceditwouldjointheBigSouthinallsportsin2003andmaintain the Conference’s football membership at fivefollowingElon’sdeparture.

In 2006, the League moved one step closer toetching its status as a viable football Conference. First, Coastal Carolina Athletic Director WarrenKoegel was appointed to the FCS FootballSelection Committee, the Big South’s first-everrepresentative on a national football committee. On April 6, the Big South added PresbyterianCollegeasitssixthfootballmember.Presbyterian,nowinthefinalyearofitstransitiontoDivisionI,officiallyjoinedtheBigSouthinallsportsin2008.OnMay26, 2006, theBigSouth announced thatassociate football member Gardner-Webb would join the Conference as full members on July 1, 2008,solidifyingtheBigSouth’sfootballmake-upfor years to come.

With membership coming together, the Big South received a huge boost at the conclusion ofthe2006campaign.LeaguechampionCoastalCarolina became the first football member toadvance to the postseason when the Chanticleers receivedanat-largeberthintheNCAADivisionIFootballChampionship.TheBigSouthtookanotherstep closer to becoming eligible for an automatic berth when on March 20, 2007, the Conferenceannounced the addition of Stony Brook University as an associate football member beginning in 2008.Alltheeffortscametofruitioninthespringof2008whentheNCAAannouncedtheexpansionoftheFCSPlayoffsfrom16to20teamsbeginningin 2010 and granting the Big South an automatic

bid starting that year.

ThegrowthofBigSouthfootballhasbeenexceptionalsinceitsinceptionjust nine years ago. The Big South experienced its most successfulcampaign in 2006withCoastalCarolina’s FCSplayoff berth; two teams(CoastalCarolinaandCharlestonSouthern)rankedinthenationalTop25inthesameweekforthefirsttime;fourappearancesontheESPNfamilyofnetworks;andthefirst-everNFLDraftpickandfirstfinalistfortheWalterPayton Award in Coastal Carolina’s Tyler Thigpen.

In2007,Libertywon thefirstof its fourconsecutiveBigSouth footballchampionships inrecord-breaking fashion just twoyearsafterfinishing1-10 overall; Coastal’s Jerome Simpson (second round) and Gardner-Webb’sBrianJohnston (seventh round)were selected in theNFLDraft,andtheLeague’sfivefootballmemberscombinedtoaverageaBigSouth-record7,488fanspergame.TheBigSouthproducedanothernationally-rankedprogramin2008inLiberty,aswellasitsfourthNFLdraftpickinthreeyears–Liberty’sRashadJennings(seventhround).

The 2010 season saw the Big South make noise around the country early intheseasonwithtwowinsoverFBSopponentsonthesameday,when

Gardner-Webb won in overtime at Akron and Liberty defeated Ball State on the road on Sept. 11. Prior to the start of the season, Stony Brook extendeditsfootballmembershipthroughthe2015campaign.Individually,Liberty’s Mike Brown led the nation in total offense while Stony Brook was theonlyFCSteamtohavetwo1,000-yardrushersinMiguelMaysonetandBrockJackolski.CoastalCarolinaemergedfromathree-waytieforfirst-placewiththeBigSouth’sfirst-everautomaticbidtotheFCSPlayoffs.TheChanticleersalsobecamethefirstConferencemembertohostafootballplayoffgameasCoastalfacedWesternIllinoisinthefirstroundatBrooksStadium. The Conference also had its largest television package to date, as a record eight League games were broadcast while Big South football membersappearedonTV12ofthe13weeksoftheseason.

Withanautomaticplayoffberthofficiallyawardedtoitsannualchampion,the Big South is poised to continue its ascension as a national competitor inFCSfootballwithaneyeonadvancinginthepostseasonandcapturingthe ultimate goal – a national championship.

Big South Announces Preseason Men’s Basketball Poll

Campbell University and Charleston Southern University have been chosen as the favorites in the Big SouthConference’sannualmen’sbasketballpreseasonpollforthe2012-13seasoninavoteoftheLeague’s Head Coaches and media panel. The announcement was made today at the Renaissance Suites HotelinCharlotte,N.C.,aspartofthe2012-13BasketballTip-OffMediaLuncheon.

Witharecord12membersin2012-13,theBigSouthwillhavedivisionalplayinmen’sbasketballforthefirsttimeinConferencehistory.CampbellisthepreseasonfavoritetowintheNorthDivisionwithCharlestonSouthernearningtheplauditfortheSouthDivision.

TheCamels,whichreturnthreestartersandsevenletterwinners,received21ofthe29first-placevotesand166outofapossible174pointstocapturethedivisionchampionship.ItisthesecondtimeCampbellhasbeenapreseasonfavoriteintheBigSouth,astheCamelsweretabbedfirstinthe1988-89poll.VMIfinishedsecondintheNorthDivisionvotingwith136pointsandfivefirst-placevotes,aheadofHighPoint.ThePanthersgarnered103pointsandthreefirst-placevotes.Libertywasfourthaftercollecting98points,followedbyRadford(fifth,57points)andnewmemberLongwood(sixth,49points).

CharlestonSouthernreceivesitsfirst-everpreseasonNo.1ranking,astheBucstallied157pointsand16first-placevotestowintheSouthDivisionin2012-13.CSU,whichreturnsfourstartersand10letterwinners this season, was previously ranked as high as second three times in the Big South’s annual preseasonpoll.CoastalCarolinawassecondintheSouthDivisionvotingwith147pointsandeightfirst-placenods,aheadofdefendingBigSouthchampionUNCAsheville.TheBulldogsfinishedthirdwith130pointsandfivefirst-placevotes.Winthropclaimedfourthwith67points,followedbyGardner-Webb(fifth,58points)andPresbyterianCollege(sixth,50points).

Henry “Hank” Small is in his 11th full year as CSU’s director of athletics and has helped lead CSU to 13 Big South Conference championships during his time, including the school’s first-ever League title in football.

Small came to CSU in the summer of 2001 following a four-year stint as assistant football coach at Wake Forest University. Small has more than 30 years of experience in NCAA Division I athletics, including stints at Rutgers, Florida State, Lehigh, Princeton and Brown. Small also spent one year in the personnel office of the New England Patriots.

As the offensive coordinator at Wake Forest, Small guided the Demon Deacons offense to record-setting heights as a number of school records fell during his tenure.

In his most recent head coaching experience, Small was able to guide Lehigh to a 47-40-1 record and led them to become one of the most productive offenses in the nation.

Small is a 1969 graduate of Gettysburg College and has a master of science degree from Rutgers University. Small and his wife, Pamela, currently reside in Goose Creek. Daughter Lacy and middle son Jonathan both graduated from CSU.

Dr. Rick Brewer is a seasoned Christian leader with the vision and leadership skills essential for serving effectively in the 21st century Christian Higher Education community. Throughout Dr. Brewer’s 24-year tenure at CSU, he has played a vital role in shaping the University’s vision for a Christian campus environment and spearheading and executing countless initiatives that underscore what Christian universities are about.

He has consistently and enthusiastically taken on positions of increasing responsibility, and has brought to each his unique blend of commitment, administrative skills and Christ-centered focus. Brewer is highly respected as an effective higher education administrator who has the ability to effect change while maintaining support and trust. Indeed, Dr. Brewer is a student-centered strategic thinker and transformational change-agent.

Dr. Brewer holds BS and MBA degrees from CSU and a PhD in Higher Educational Leadership from the University of South Carolina. In his role as Vice President for Student Affairs and Athletics, Dr. Brewer provides leadership for CSU’s student life, Christian ministries,

denominational relations and athletics.

His family has a solid commitment to Christian higher education - Dr. Brewer’s wife, Cathy, and two sons, Jason and Jonathan, are also alums of CSU. The Brewers are members of Summerville Baptist Church in Summerville, S.C., where he serves as a deacon.

Named president of Charleston Southern University in 1984, Dr. Jairy C. Hunter, Jr. is also a professor of management and education. His teaching and professional interests include educational leadership, institutional assessment, higher education finance, organiza-tional change and student personnel services.r. Hunter is a frequent keynote speaker and seminar leader on topics related to higher education, and he continues to teach in the MBA program in CSU’s School of Business. During his tenure at CSU, enrollment has increased from 1,600 students to more than 3,200. Academic programs have expanded to include graduate degrees in education, business administration, criminal justice and nursing. Church ministry-related degrees have also grown to include youth ministry and church music. A sports medicine/athletic training program has also been added under Hunter’s administration, providing students with academic and clinical preparation for certification by the National Athletic Trainers Association. Beginning in 2007-08, the annual Hunter Cup is

given to the top athlete who also stands out academically and spiritually.

Brad Drake joined the CSU Athletic Training staff in 2007. He is responsible for the healthcare needs of the Men’s Basketball team.

Brad is originally from Greenville, S.C., and is a 1996 graduate of Presbyterian College. In 1998 he earned a Master of Arts Degree in Health and Exercise Science from Furman University. After receiving his Masters, Brad completed a summer internship with the Carolina Panthers. Most recently, Brad was the Head Athletic Trainer at James F. Byrnes High School in Duncan, SC. Brad also provided Athletic Training Coverage for the North team during the 2006 North/South All Star Football game in Myrtle Beach,

S.C.

Brad is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and the South Carolina Athletic Trainers’ Association. He serves as the Chair of the Program Committee for the SCATA Annual Symposium.

In his free time Brad enjoys playing golf, watching movies, and visiting with friends and family.

Lance Schuemann joined the CSU staff in June 2011, and is responsible for the healthcare needs of men’s basketball and assists with football. Prior to joining CSU, he was an intern with the Florida Gators men’s tennis and basketball programs.

Schuemann holds a master’s degree in sports administration from Valparaiso University. While at Valparaiso, he was responsible for the medical care of the football and baseball teams. In 2007, he graduated from the University of Florida with a bachelor’s degree in athletic training, where he was an athletic training student for the 2007 national championship men’s basketball program.

Schuemann is a native of Palm Beach Gardens, Fa., and a member of the National Athletic Trainer’s Association. In his spare time, he enjoys spending time with friends and family, playing golf, and watching all sports, especially the Chicago Cubs.

The Athletic Training Program at Charleston Southern University strives to provide comprehensive athletic training services to almost 300 Division I student-athletes, participating in 16 varsity sports. Athletic training ser-vices include the recognition, treatment, rehabilitation, education and prevention of injuries that occur during intercollegiate athletic competition. The Charleston Southern University Athletic Training Center is located inside the CSU Field House. The facility is equipped with the tools necessary to provide extensive injury care and rehabili-tative services for the Buccaneers. The CSU sports medicine department works in conjunction with South Carolina Sports Medicine. This group of highly talented and trusted physicians has been serving the Charleston area for the past 15 years. Dr. Jo-seph Calandra, Dr. Gary Windler, Dr. Seth Kupferman, Dr. James Dalton, Dr. William Wilson, Dr. Jon DeVries, and Dr. Eric Stem, along with Physician Assistants Michael Byers and Christopher Schafer, work directly with the Charleston Southern Athletic Training staff to provide the highest quality orthopedic care for our student-athletes. Charleston Southern also works directly with Dr. Brian Keller, family practitioner, and Dr. Michael Engel as team dentist. The athletic training staff at Charleston Southern consists of five Certified Athletic Trainers. In July 2010, Brad Drake was named the head of the department, while Tuesday Patterson, Tadd Turnquist, Samantha Boudreau all return for the 2010-11 school year. Drake will add three new employees to complete the athletic training staff and provide daily healthcare services to all CSU student-athletes. They also serve as approved clinical instructors

Beyond the classroom, students participate in a variety of campus

activities including academic clubs, service organizations, intramural athletics and campus ministries. The University offers intercollegiate athletics for both men and women, competing in the NCAA Division I Big South Conference. Charleston Southern fields teams in basketball, baseball, softball, women’s soccer, cross country, track and field, golf, tennis and volleyball, as well as an NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision team.

Our athletic programs have produced several nationally recognized professional sports figures, including Charlie Simpkins, 1992 Olympic silver medalist; Maurice Price and Josh Breeden, who signed as free agents in the NFL; Bryant Burch, who signed with the CFL’s Calgary Stampeders; Crystal Carpenter, who signed with the WNBA’s Utah Starzz; R.J. Swindle, who played for the Charleston Riverdogs as a member of the Yankees organization and became the first CSU player to ever pitch in a MLB game, joining the Phillies; Tyler Thornburg, who was taken by the Milwaukee Brewers in the third round of the 2010 MLB draft; and Bobby Parnell, who made it to the Majors with the N.Y. Mets. Charleston Southern University is proud to have sent 11 different teams to NCAA competition over the past nine years. The women’s golf team is the most recent to represent the University in NCAA postseason play, winning the conference championship in 2010.
