  • 6Returning three starters off a spectacular team that advanced to the NCAA championship game has once again kept the bar high for Kansas mens basketball. KU welcomes nine freshmen, which once again will make the Jayhawks one of the youngest teams in the nation for head coach Bill Self--who enters his 10th season at KU with a 269-53 record for an 83.5 winning percentage.

Returning only one starter, last season the Jayhawks went 32-7 overall and 16-2 in the Big 12 Conference race, winning their school-record eighth-straight Big 12 regular-season title, 12th overall Big 12 championship and NCAA-leading 55th conference regular-season crown. Kansas advanced to its 14th Final Four and ninth NCAA Tournament title game in 2011-12.

Whos BackThree seniors comprise the returning starters in guards Elijah Johnson and Travis Releford, and center Jeff Withey. Johnson is KUs leading returning scorer averaging 10.2 points per game in 2011-12, while Releford scored 8.5 points per contest and averaged 4.2 rebounds per outing. Last season, Withey, the 2012 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, broke the Kansas and Big 12 Conference single-season blocked shots record with 140 blocks, including an NCAA Tournament-record 31 blocked shots in six games. Withey averaged 9.3 points per game and his 6.3 rebounds and 3.6 blocked shots per contest make him the returning stat leader in those categories. Other KU regulars from last year include senior forward Kevin Young (3.4 ppg, 3.0 rpg), junior forward Justin Wesley (1.2 ppg, 1.6 rpg) and sophomore guard Naadir Tharpe (32 games, 5.5 minutes per game). Walk-on guards Niko Roberts and Christian Garrett will provide depth on the perimeter for Kansas in 2012-13.

New FacesKansas has nine freshmen on its roster this season with two Ben McLemore and Jamari Traylor who were NCAA partial qualifiers last season. The redshirt duo practiced with the team following the fall 2011 semester. Both know Bill Selfs system, and will have an immediate impact on the rotation and could crack into the starting lineup.

Five of the other seven freshmen on the roster are on scholarship: guards Rio Adams and Andrew White III and forwards Perry Ellis, Landen Lucas and Zach Peters. All come to Kansas with numerous high school accolades and should add to the Jayhawks team effort from the start. Adding depth at the guard position are invited freshmen walk-on guards Evan Manning and Tyler Self. Roberts, Manning and Self have lived basketball all their lives as their fathers are current, or previous head coaches.

The ScheduleKansas 2012-13 schedule includes four games on CBS, as well as 19 games on the ESPN family of networks, which include four Big Monday appearances and an ESPN Gameday contest against Texas on Feb. 16. The Jayhawks schedule will feature at least 14 games against teams that played in last years NCAA Tournament, and at least 15 games against schools that were in the top-100 of last seasons RPI rankings.

For the second-consecutive year the Jayhawks will play as part of the Champions Classic when they go up against Michigan State in Atlantas Georgia Dome.

Kansas TV Notables --For the sixth-straight season and 13th time in the 17-year history of the Big 12 Conference, the Jayhawks will play in four ESPN Big Monday games with an additional Monday conference home game against Texas Tech on ESPNU. KUs ESPN Big Monday contests will be Jan. 14 against Baylor, Jan. 28 at West Virginia, Feb. 11 against Kansas State and Feb. 25 at Iowa State. Kansas is 45-16 all-time on Big Monday (25-1 at home, 20-15 on the road), including 26-8 under head coach Bill Self.--Kansas could play up to 24 games against schools from BCS conferences: three from the Pac 12, two from the Big Ten, possibly Texas A&M (SEC) in the second game of the CBE tournament and 18 from the Big 12.--Kansas will play four non-conference opponents that won their respective league titles in 2012: Michigan State and Ohio State (Tied Big Ten), Belmont (Atlantic Sun) and Temple (Atlantic 10).

A Second HomeWith the CBE Classic (Nov. 19-20) the BMO Harris Bank Kansas City Shootout (Nov. 30) against Oregon State, the Big 12 Championship (March 13-16) and the NCAA Tournament second and third rounds, Kansas could play as many as eight games at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Mo., during the 2012-13 season.

Kansas City has been a second home of sorts for Kansas over the years. KUs first-ever game -- a 16-5 loss to Kansas City YMCA on Feb. 3, 1899 -- was played in Kansas City. The CBE Classic in November 2012 will be 278th and 279th games all-time in Kansas City and the 19th and 20th in the Sprint Center for the Jayhawks. KU is 14-4 in the Sprint Center, including winning the 2008, 2010 and 2011 Big 12 Championships

Since his arrival at KU, Bill Self is 145-7 in games played at Allen Fieldhouse for a 95.4 winning percentage. Self has won more conference titles (eight) than lost home games (seven) while at Kansas. Included was a school-record 69-game home court winning streak which led the nation for more than two seasons and ranks 11th all-time in the NCAA records book.

First Class FacilitiesIn October 2009, Allen Fieldhouse re-opened following an 18-month project valued at more than $42 million, making Kansas home to one of the best basketball facilities in the country. Included is a 14,000 square-foot academic support building, an 11,600 square-foot practice facility, new locker rooms, a clubhouse, players lounge and meeting rooms. At the 2011 Legends of the Phog alumni exhibition game, many former Jayhawks have said the Fieldhouse facilities were better than most of the NBA venues they play in.

Next LevelWith Thomas Robinson (5) and Tyshawn Taylor (41) in the 2012 NBA Draft, for the third straight year, Kansas had two or more players selected in the NBA Draft. Five Lottery selections (Xavier Henry and Cole Aldrich in 2010, Markieff Morris and Marcus Morris in 2011 and Robinson in 2012), are included.

Since the inception of the Big 12 in 1996-97, KU has had 23 players drafted in the NBA, which is the most of any league member. Over the last decade, KU is among the top-five for producing the most NBA Draft picks in the nation with 17. • Named in honor of the late Dr. F.C. Phog Allen, the Jayhawks head coach for 39 years, Allen Fieldhouse is labeled by many as one of the best places in America to watch a college basketball game.

The Fieldhouse was dedicated on March 1, 1955, as the Jayhawks defeated Kansas State, 77-67, before an overflow throng of 17,228.

Jayhawk fans have been piling into the Fieldhouse ever since. Kansas has led its conference in attendance in each of the last 26 years and consistently ranks in the top 10 nationally. With capacity seating of 16,300, Allen Fieldhouse is the second-largest basketball arena in the Big 12 Conference and the largest in the state of Kansas. The Jayhawks have sold out 180 consecutive games dating back to the home-opener in 2001 against Pittsburg State, when the attendance of 16,100 was just 200 shy of capacity. In its history, more than 10 million fans have attended mens basketball games in Allen Fieldhouse.

Since the conclusion of the 2004-05 season, Allen Fieldhouse has gone through major upgrades with the intent not to lose the lore of the complex, including a new practice facility and locker room, a new scoreboard and sound system and a new floor to add more cushion for those who play on it.

    In October 2009, KU completed a $42 million project that included a 11,600 square-foot practice facility, a 5,000 square-foot club house/locker room and 14,000 square-foot academic support building.

In addition to the inside renovations, the Booth Family Hall of Athletics was added to the east side of Allen Fieldhouse. The $8 million 26,000 square-foot project was dedicated Jan. 21, 2006, and features a comprehensive history of Kansas athletics. The experience provided by the Booth Family Hall of Athletics has attracted KU and college basketball fans from across the country.

Capacity in Allen Fieldhouse was 15,200 prior to the 1986-87 season, when 600 seats were added. Prior to the 1994-95 season, an additional 500 seats were added, bringing capacity to 16,300.

There are 4,000 seats, including many close to the playing floor, reserved strictly for the students. A $3.5 million renovation prior to the 1998-99 season paved the way for new and larger restrooms and concession stands, an elevator and larger, more accessible entryways.

Prior to the 2005-06 season, Kansas Athletics recognized the Ward family at Allen Fieldhouse for their contributions toward the renovations in the Fieldhouse. Enhancements to Allen Fieldhouse included a new playing floor, new lighting system, new scoreboard/video board, new sound system, new windows and updated safety equipment. Additionally, the bleachers were painted crimson and blue, the east-side chairback seats were refurbished, some first-level restrooms updated, the inside ceiling painted and the outside of the Fieldhouse cleaned.

Allen Field house, historically, has served as host for many NCAA championships. In mens basketball alone, Allen Fieldhouse has hosted 37 NCAA Tournament games.

Today, Allen Fieldhouse hosts more than 40 home basketball games (men and women combined) each year. The facility has also been used for stage shows, major ad dresses and for commencement ceremonies when the weather is incle ment.

Originally, Allen Fieldhouse was used as a multi-purpose facility. The Kansas track teams ran there during the indoor season and the Fieldhouse served as an indoor practice facility for the basketball, softball and football teams.

In 1984, Anschutz Sports Pavilion was completed, making Allen Fieldhouse the exclusive home of KU mens and womens basketball and Kansas volleyball.

In October of 1998, the Horejsi Family Athletics Center was constructed just west of Allen Fieldhouse. This 16,500 square-foot building serves as the home for KU volleyball.

Administrative and coaching offices for the athletics department are located in Allen Fieldhouse, Parrott Athletic Center, annexed to the Fieldhouse in 1970, and the Wagnon Student-Athlete Center.

Over the past 28 seasons, Kansas has compiled a 403-27 record in the Fieldhouse, including 16-0 in 2011-12. Between February of 2007 and January of 2011, the Jayhawks won a school-record 69 consecutive games in Allen Fieldhouse.

Los Angeles residents Dana and Sue Anderson pledged the funds to the University of Kansas Endowment Association on behalf of their family, including their four children, for the one-of-a-kind strength and conditioning center. Built on existing university property at the northwest corner of Anschutz Sports Pavilion, the two-story center replaced the Shaffer-Holland Strength Center.

In summer 2012, Kansas became the signature school for EliteForm, which integrates technology into workout sessions to enhance the training and sport performances in KU student-athletes. Assistant Athletic Director for Sport Performance Andrea Hudy is the strength and conditioning coach for mens basketball. Prior to KU, Hudy served nine and a half years at Connecticut, where she worked closely with the Huskies national champion mens and womens basketball teams. In all, Hudy was part of eight national championship teams while at Connecticut - two mens basketball, five womens basketball and one mens soccer.

Hudy earned her bachelor of science degree in kinesiology at Maryland and her masters of art and sport biomechanics degree from Connecticut. She is a certified strength and conditioning specialist by the National Strength and Conditioning Association and a USAW Level I Coach. Hudy is also a nationally certified massage therapist.

Hudy has worked with 33 former student-athletes who went on to play in the NBA, including KUs Cole Aldrich, Darrell Arthur, Mario Chalmers, Sherron Collins, Xavier Henry, Darnell Jackson, Keith Langford, Aaron Miles, Marcus Morris, Markieff Morris, Thomas Robinson, Brandon Rush, Josh Selby, Wayne Simien, Tyshawn Taylor and Julian Wright.

Each year, Kansas basketball gives something back to the community that supports it so passionately.

From the time classes start in late August until the end of the spring semester, Kansas basketball will donate countless hours of its time and raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for charity.

BASKETBALLS FOR CHARITYDuring the course of the season, every Kansas basketball player and coach will autograph nearly 1,500 basketballs, which are sold to the general public through www.kustore.com and, in turn, generate funds for a variety of charities. Two of the top beneficiaries in recent years have been Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Douglas County and the Early Readiness Program of the Lawrence Schools Foundation. The Kansas players and coaches choose a small group of other organizations that also benefit.

CHRISTMAS HELP FOR THOSE WHO NEED ITDuring the holiday season, each Jayhawk player goes gift shopping for an area family in need. Through charitable donations, the Jayhawk players purchase and distribute gifts to the families.

SALVATION ARMY FOOD DRIVEEvery October, Late Night, KUs annual version of midnight madness, attracts close to 16,000 fans. There is no admission charge, but fans are encouraged to bring canned food items. Hundreds of thousands of cans of food have been donated to local food banks.

WILT CHAMBERLAIN SPECIAL OLYMPICS CLINICThe Kansas mens basketball team continues to enjoy an extremely popular and mutually beneficial association with the Special Olympics. For 28 years, the Jayhawks have dedicated time and energy each season to working with the Kansas Special Olympics. Each year the Jayhawks conduct a basketball skills seminar specifically for Special Olympians. Later this season, the Kansas team again will hold the clinic in Allen Fieldhouse.

  • CAMPANILE HILLCampanile Hill forms the picturesque backdrop for Memorial Stadium. On a sunny fall Saturday, the Hill is transformed into a congregating place for watching Jayhawk football, sunning and barbequing. Potter Lake, just to the southwest of Memorial Stadium and at the bottom of Campanile Hill, adds to the beauty of the Kansas campus.

LATE NIGHT IN THE PHOGLate Night at the University of Kansas continues to be one of the most well-attended midnight madness events in all of college basketball. Each year, some 16,000 fans pack into Allen Fieldhouse to catch an off-beat look at the Jayhawks and to get a sneak peak at the highly-touted freshmen. Former Kansas coach Larry Brown, in 1985, helped get Late Night started. The title of the event was borrowed from the show, Late Night With David Letterman.

Late Night was an instant success at basketball-crazed KU, but it really blossomed in the early 1990s and has become a tradition at KU. Since 1988-89, the Jayhawk womens basketball team has taken on a greater share of the Late Night load and often shares center court with the KU mens team. The pep band, cheerleaders, dance team and mascots are also very much involved in the pre-scrimmage entertainment.

For Jayhawk fans, Late Night has provided some lasting memories. In 1989, Alonzo Jamison snapped the entire basketball goal support with a pre-game slam dunk. In 1991, 7-0 freshman Greg Ostertag lip-synced Friends in Low Places. In 1996, Scot Pollard had the house lights lowered and proposed to his girlfriend-- she accepted.

SENIOR DAYKansas basketball fans say good-bye to senior members of the Jayhawks with one of the most festive days in all of college basketball. Senior Day, always an emotional day for Jayhawk fans, includes both a pre- and post-game ceremony in Allen Fieldhouse.

The seniors, including senior student-managers, join their parents at center court and are introduced to the crowd. In recent years, KU fans have tossed flowers on the court to show their appreciation for the players. The Kansas coaching staff believes strongly in senior leadership and the seniors are often asked for input on many facets of the Jayhawk basketball program, from team travel to the design of championship rings. And, for the last 24 years, seniors have been in the starting lineup on Senior Day. Kansas fans will long remember Senior Day in 1995 when the Jayhawks hosted Oklahoma State in a game that determined the Big Eight Conference championship. Both teams entered the game with 10-3 league records. Even with the league title hanging in the balance, a walk-on, Scott Novosel, was in the starting lineup. When Novosel was taken out of the game, he was greeted by a standing ovation. Kansas went on to win the game and claim the Big Eight title.

CAMPING FOR SEATSFor practically every home basketball game, between 50 and 500 KU students stand in line for up to a week with hopes of securing courtside seats.

Up until the mid-1990s students literally camped outside of Allen Fieldhouse in tents for days. For safety reasons, KU officials helped organize the campers so that everything is done inside of Allen Fieldhouse and students are sent home at 10 p.m. Unique to KU is that the students camping are already in possession of tickets (general admission). They wait in line solely to secure the best seats available.

  • THE ROCK CHALK CHANTThe Rock Chalk Chant has been the battle cry of KU fans for more than 80 years. This strange, traditional chant, which is among the most famous of all college cheers, was started by E.H.S. Bailey, a professor of chemistry. On May 21, 1886, Bailey submitted the cheer to his club.

Before the University adopted the cheer in 1897, it consisted of Rah, Rah, Jayhawk, KU being repeated three times. An English professor soon suggested that Rock Chalk be substituted for Rah, Rah because it rhymed with Jayhawk. Rock Chalk was also symbolic of the chalky limestone formations found on Mount Oread. Teddy Roosevelt once said the Rock Chalk Chant was the best he had ever heard.

THE SCHOOL COLORSThe University of Kansas colors, crimson and blue, used since the early 1890s, are not the colors originally adopted by the university Board of Regents in the 1860s. The Regents had decided to adopt the Michigan colors, maize and sky blue.

Maize and blue were used at early oratorical meets, and they may have been used when Kansas competed in rowing in the middle 1880s. However, when football came upon the scene in 1890, the student backers wanted to use Harvard crimson as the athletic color in honor of Col. John J. McCook, a Harvard man, who had given money for an athletic field at KU. That field ran east and west in the proximity of where the north bowl of Memorial Stadium stands on the Kansas campus today.

Some Yale men were on the faculty, and they demanded the Yale blue be included. The rooters rallied forth to allow crimson and blue on their team. No one fought to retain the original colors, and the vivid deeper tone crimson and blue became generally used. Finally, in May 1896, the KU Athletic Board adopted crimson and blue as the official team colors for the university.

THE ALMA MATERIn 1891, professor George Barlow Penny searched for a school song for the Glee and Mandolin Club to sing on its tour through Kansas to Denver and back. No one responded with an original song in answer to his appeals. Just before departure, he thought of the Cornell song Far Above Cayugas Waters. Hastily changing a few words, he gave it to the glee club men to sing on the trip. He did not expect the song to be used after their return, but Crimson and the Blue still goes on. The music is not Cornells but an old English folk tune, Annie Lisle.

Waving The WheatSince the early days of KU sports, it has been a ritual of Jayhawk fans to wave the wheat following every Kansas scoring drive in football. The tradition also extends to Allen Fieldhouse where fans wave the wheat when an opponent fouls out and at the conclusion of every Jayhawk victory. The ritual consists of fans waving their arms in the air, an activity which, when done by a large crowd, resembles a breezy Kansas wheat field.

THE NICKNAMEDuring the Civil War a regiment raised by Kansas Governor Charles Robinson called itself the Independent Mounted Jayhawks (later officially the First Kansas Calvary and then the Seventh Kansas Regiment). By the end of the Civil War the word Jayhawk was associated with the spirit of camaraderie and the courageous fighting qualities that characterized efforts to keep Kansas a free state.

By 1886, the University of Kansas had adopted the mythical bird as part of the KU yell. When the universitys football team first took the field in 1890, it seemed only natural that they should be called Jayhawkers. Few colleges and universities have such a meaningful symbol, one so deeply associated with the struggles of the people who founded them.

THE FIGHT SONGGeorge Dumpy Bowles, a student with the class of 1912, longed to make a great contribution to the KU spirit, but wasnt athletic enough to do historic deeds on the athletic field. He turned to music and produced some outstanding student musical shows.

A song in one of these shows was Im a Jayhawk. Written in 1912, it was dormant until 1920 when a growth in school spirit brought out Im a Jayhawk once more. The song contributed to the raising of funds to build both the KU football stadium and student union as World War I memorials. The 1926 glee club made it known nationally.
