Following a historic 2011 campaign, Cal U recorded the most successful year in program history last season. The Vulcans compiled their highest-ever point total at the PSAC Championships and posted their best finish at the NCAA Championships with Melissa Gates winning two national titles. The Vulcans qualified six swimmers for last year’s NCAA Championships in Texas and finished 12th in the team standings. In addition to boasting two national titles, Cal U also featured All-American 200 and 400 freestyle relay teams. Following the loss of Gates due to graduation, head coach Ed Denny will look for the Vulcans to again compete on the national stage, as four of the six swimmers from the NCAA Championships return this season. Overall, Cal U returns 15 swimmers from a team that finished third at the PSAC Championships. Junior Clarissa Enslin and senior Caitlyn Sirkoch boast tremendous experience at the national level. Sirkoch has competed on the 200 freestyle relay at the NCAA Championships for three-straight years, earning All-America status last season after receiving Honorable Mention in 2010 and 2011. Enslin was an All-American in the 200 freestyle as a freshman before garnering All-America status on the 200 and 400 freestyle relays last year. Enslin repeated as the PSAC Champion in the 200 freestyle after winning the event as a freshman. She is just the second swimmer in school history to repeat as league champion in an event. Enslin, one of three international swimmers on the team, also earned All-PSAC honors in the 100 freestyle for the second-straight year. Sirkoch has qualified for the PSAC Championships in five different individual events during her career. She set career-best times in the 200 breaststroke and 200 IM last year and also scored in the 200 freestyle at the league championships in 2012.

Junior Kathryn Mellon recorded three NCAA provisional times at last year’s PSAC Championships. She has scored in the 1000 and 1650 freestyle, as well as the 400 IM, in each of the last two league Championships. Seniors Bruna Carvalho and Megan Schuh look to place in multiple events at the PSAC Championships. A native of Brazil, Carvalho has improved her finish in the 200 butterfly every year and reached the NCAA provisional marks in the 100 and 200 butterfly at the league championships. Schuh established a career-best time in the 200 backstroke at last year’s PSAC Championships and also scored in the 100 backstroke and 500 freestyle. Junior Kelsey Nuhfer and sophomore Alyssa Novotny look to improve their individual finishes after earning league titles and All-America status as members of freestyle relays. Nuhfer has qualified for the PSAC Championships in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle in each of the last two years, while Novotny placed in the 100 freestyle as a freshman last season. Despite Gates graduating, the Vulcans return key pieces of their freestyle and medley relays from last season. The 200 and 400 freestyle relays both won titles at the PSAC Championships and earned All-America honors with record-setting times at the NCAA Championships. Last year marked the first time in program history that Cal U won a relay at the PSAC Championships and featured multipleAll-American relay teams. In the medley relays, Enslin, Schuh and junior Brianna Sieck return after both relays finished among the top five at the PSAC Championships. Sieck scored in two individual events at the league championships in her first year with the program. With nine swimmers that placed at league championships last season, Cal U should again be among the top teams in the PSAC and challenge for more accolades at the national level.

COACHING STAFF

Ed Denny enters his 11th year as head coach of the Cal U women’s swimming program following the most decorated season in school history. Last year, the Vulcans finished third at the PSAC Championships for the third time in the past four years and recorded the highest point total in school history. Cal U set three new PSAC Championship records and Melissa Gates was named MVP of the event after setting league-record times of 22.62 seconds in the 50 freestyle and 49.60 seconds in the 100 freestyle. Gates also was the leadoff leg of both the PSAC Champion 200 and 400 freestyle relays, the first league relay titles in school history. Cal U finished in the top 15 of the team standings at the NCAA Championships for the second-straight year and ranked in the top 20 for the fourth-consecutive year. Gates won the national title in both the 50 and 100 freestyle, setting a new NCAA Division II record in the 50 freestyle and finishing just one one-hundredth of a second shy of the 100 freestyle record. She improved her NCAA record in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.56 seconds as the leadoff of the 200 freestyle relay. All six swimmers that competed at the NCAA Championships last season received All-America status. Over the last decade at Cal U, Denny has coached three NCAA National Champions and 33 NCAA All-Americans. The Vulcans have captured 17 league titles and posted nearly 50 All-PSAC performances. In addition to their success in the pool, the Vulcans have also excelled in the classroom. Cal U has been honored as a Scholar All-American team for 10-consecutive years by the College Swimming Coaches Association of American (CSCAA). Last year, the program was honored by the PSAC for boasting the highest cumulative GPA among all league schools in women’s

swimming and Kelsey Nuhfer became the first Academic All-American in program history. Originally from Derry, Pa., Denny began his swimming career at Kiski Prep School before enrolling at West Virginia. He completed his bachelor’s degree in secondary education from WVU in 1982 before earning his master’s degree in education from Long Island in 1991. With the Mountaineers, Denny was a qualifier for the NCAA Championships in the 1650 freestyle in 1980 and 1981. A co-captain in 1981, he still holds WVU natatorium records in the 1000 (9:22.01 - 1979) and 1650 (15:34.07 - 1980) freestyle. He also held the Penn State natatorium record in the 1650-yard freestyle (15:23.40) for 19 years and still holds the Atlantic-10 Conference record in the 1650-yard freestyle at 15:34.07, which he set in 1980. During his time at WVU, Denny placed third in the 1500 freestyle at the 1978 National Junior Olympics in Santa Clara, Calif. In 1980, Denny placed 13th in the 1500 freestyle at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Irvine, Calif. He started his coaching career in 1983 as graduate assistant with the Mountaineers under head coach Kevin Gilson. A year later, Denny joined the coaching staff at the U.S. Naval Academy. After four seasons at Navy, he returned to Kiski as head coach in 1988. A year later, he returned to the collegiate ranks as an assistant coach at the U.S. Military Academy, where he stayed for three seasons. Following his time at the Military

Academy, Denny accepted the head-coaching position of the men’s and women’s swimming programs at Fairmont State. Denny guided the Fighting Falcon swim programs from their transition of NAIA to NCAA Division II in 1995. Under Denny’s leadership, Fairmont State had 19 swimmers earn NAIA All-America honors in 59 events from 1993-95, including the men’s 200 butterfly National Champion in 1995. After the transition to NCAA Division II, Denny guided nine of his swimmers to individual All-America recognition in 29 events from 1995-2001 and an 11th-place finish in the team standings by the 1999 women’s team. The Fairmont State teams were recognized for their exemplary individual and team academic achievements by the CSCAA for five-straight years. Denny resides in California with his wife Carolann.

Three-time NCAA National Champion • NCAA Championship Record Holder10-Time NCAA All-American • Five-Time PSAC Champion

Melissa Gates concluded her career as the most decorated swimmer in school history. She was a three-time NCAA National Champion, winning the 50 freestyle in both 2011 and 2012 and also the 100 freestyle in 2012. Gates was a 10-time All-American, the most in school history, and set the NCAA Championships record in the 50 freestyle twice as a senior. The Lancaster native was selected the PSAC Athlete of the Year in 2012 after winning a combined five titles, including the 50 and 100 freestyle in league championship record-setting times. She was the leadoff leg on a pair of relay teams that were the first PSAC Champion relay teams in program history. Gates rewrote the school record book during her illustrious career, finishing with nine school records (four individual, five relay). Following her senior season, Gates won preliminary heats in both the 50 and 100 freestyle at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials and was nominated by Cal U and the PSAC for the NCAA Woman of the Year Award.

An opportunity. That’s how Ed Denny viewed the upstart California University of Pennsylvania swimming program 11 years ago. A decade later, the Vulcans have developed into a perennial contender at the PSAC Championships and a top-20 program on the national stage. With a first-year program, Denny recruited student-athletes on the idea of being part of something that never existed before. The possibility resulted in immediate success for the program, as Sandra Buehler garnered conference and national recognition. A native of Germany, she won the PSAC title in both the 500 and 1000 freestyle and was named the PSAC Freshman of the Year. As a team, the Vulcans finished seventh at the PSAC Championships after posting a 10-0 record in dual meets during the regular season. Buehler also earned All-America status in the 500, 1000 and 1650 freestyle at the 2003 NCAA Championships. The following year, Petra Zavadilova earned All-PSAC honors as the Vulcans finished ninth at the league championships after going 9-1 during the season. She also was a NCAA Honorable Mention All-American in the 100 butterfly as a freshman. In 2005, Cal U posted its best finish to that point at the PSAC Championships, finishing sixth behind individual titles by Zavadilova in the 100 and 200 butterfly. In addition to Zavadilova, Rachel Driver, Miranda King, Anca Mihaiu and Melanie Ruch earned All-PSAC honors. King scored in five events at the league championships, while Mihaiu placed in four events. At the NCAA Championships, Zavadilova received All-America honors in both 100 and 200 butterfly. During the regular season, the Vulcans set the school-best mark with 11 wins in dual meets. Cal U regained its place on the national scene in 2008 with the addition of Ester Bosch. In her first year with the program, she was an All-American in the 100 and 200 freestyle and was Honorable Mention All-American in the 50 freestyle. At the conference level, Bosch was the first swimmer in three years to claim an individual title by winning the 200 freestyle, while the 200 freestyle relay of Bosch, Rachel Kurta, Courtney Schneiderlochner and King became the second relay in school history, and first since 2005, to earn All-PSAC honors. Building off the success of the previous season, Cal U posted a monumental year in 2009. The Vulcans made an astounding jump at the conference level,

finishing third at the PSAC Championships after never finishing above sixth. On the national stage, Cal U qualified a school-record nine swimmers for the NCAA Championships, featured a pair of All-A m e r i c a n s in Bosch and

Marianne Juhl and boasted the school’s first-ever All-American relay team. At the PSAC Championships, Bosch won the 200 and 500 freestyle, while Juhl captured titles in the 1000 and 1650 freestyle. For the first time in program history, all six of the Cal U relay teams earned All-PSAC honors with Bosch and Melissa Gates on four of the relays. Bosch was an All-American in the 200 and 500 freestyle, while being a member of the All-American 200 freestyle relay with Gates, Teresa Hernanez-Verdu and Kurta. Juhl garnered All-America status in the 1650 freestyle. In 2010, the Vulcans finished fifth at the PSAC Championships after six swimmers earned All-PSAC honors. Gates developed into one of the top swimmers in the country as a sophomore, finishing fourth in the 50 freestyle at the NCAA Championships. As a senior, Bosch earned All-America honors for the sixth time in her career as a member of 800 freestyle relay. The following season was another defining year for the development of the Cal U program, as Gates became the first National Champion in the history of the program. As a team, the Vulcans finished 14th at the NCAA Championships for the second time in three years. Gates won the preliminaries and finals in the 50 freestyle and also finished third in the 100 freestyle at the NCAA Championships. As a freshman, Clarissa Enslin earned All-America laurels in the 200 freestyle. In addition to the individual success, four relays earned Honorable Mention All-America status in 2011. At the PSAC Championships, the Vulcans again finished third in the team standings with eight All-PSAC swimmers. In 2012, Cal U compiled the most successful season

in program history, highlighted by Gates claiming national titles in the 50 and 100 freestyle. The Vulcans posted their highest-ever finish at the NCAA Championships by placing 12th in the team standings. Gates earned All-America status five times and broke the NCAA Championships in the 50 freestyle twice. Cal U qualified a school-record 17 swimmers for the league championships and tied the program best by finishing third at the PSAC Championships. Gates was selected the MVP of the event and PSAC Swimmer of the Year after winning a combined five league crowns and breaking three league championship records. Sophomore Kelsey Nuhfer, who was a member of the PSAC Champion and All-American 200 freestyle relay, became the first swimmer in school history to be selected an Academic All-American. Following her illustrious career, Gates won preliminary heats in the 50 and 100 freestyle at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. A decade after the start of the program, Cal U offers an opportunity to compete for conference titles, earn All-America status, win a National Championship and even a chance to qualify for the Olympics.

PSAC Originating in 1951 to administer and promote men’s athletics, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference has evolved into one of the NCAA’s most heralded intercollegiate conferences. The first major step came in 1977, when based on a growing interest, the league reorganized to provide a structure for its women’s programs. Only three years later, lacking a standard competitive division, league voted to reclassify the entire conference to NCAA Division II. Among its recent enhancements the PSAC has expanded its membership twice during a four-year span. The first occurred during the 2008-09 academic year with the addition of full-time members Gannon University and Mercyhurst College, and associate member Long Island University-C.W. Post. Over the past year, the PSAC’s Board of Directors agreed to welcome Seton Hill University as an associate member to begin play in field hockey during the 2011-12 campaign. The membership now consists of 16 full-time institutions and the two associate members. All of the league’s full-time members are located within the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, which makes the PSAC the largest one-state conference in the NCAA. The league has also grown to share the distinctions as: The largest conference in Division II, the largest football-playing conference in the NCAA, and, with 23, the conference that sponsors the most championships at the Division II level. Highly competitive on a regional and national level, PSAC schools annually combine to send nearly one-third of its teams into NCAA postseason play. Ultimately, the membership’s success has

yielded 43 NCAA team and 246 individual title winners. While proud of its athletic accomplishments, the league also has evolved into one of Division II’s finest from an academic standpoint. Today, nearly one-third of the PSAC’s estimated 6,300 participants are honored each year as “Scholar-Athletes” for maintaining a

grade-point average of 3.25 or better - a total that has nearly doubled since PSAC Scholar-Athletes were first recognized in the mid-1990s.

Although all 16 current institutions are members of Division II, seven league schools also compete at the Division I level in select

sports. PSAC schools enroll over 127,000 students and claim over 710,000 alumni, including 483,000 who reside in Pennsylvania.

The PSAC is governed by the presidents of the 16 member institutions. It employs a commissioner, an

associate and assistant commissioner, and a director of media relations at its headquarters in Lock Haven, Pa.
