ButheadcoachMattSchmidt’sadditionstothePiratesquadfor2012-13,combinedwithkeyreturn-ingplayersfromlastseason’ssquad,haveArmstrongthinkingthatthefuturemightberightnowforArm-strongwomen’sbasketball. Mauri Wells was named one of the five PBC PreseasonAll-ConferenceTeamhonoreesinanothervoteoftheleague’scoaches. ThePiratesopenthe2012-13seasononFriday,November9,hostingEckerdCollegeat6:00p.m.Armstrong plays its first nine games at home in 2012-13 and 11 of its first 12, giving Pirate fans an extended lookearlyonathowthewomen’sbasketballteamwillfarethisseason.

Matt Schmidt begins his fifth season as the head women’s basketball coachatArmstrongAtlanticStateUniversity. InfourseasonsatthehelmoftheLadyPirates,Schmidthascompileda47-59overallrecord,includinga25-31markinthePeachBelt. Last season, the Pirates increased their overall win total by five from thepreviousseason,going13-13overallandtyingforfourthinthePeachBeltConferenceEastDivisionstandings,missingoutonthePBCTourna-mentviaatiebreaker.SophomoreMauriWellsearnedthird-teamAll-Con-ferencehonorsandrankedfourthinNCAADivisionIIinreboundingat13.0reboundspergame,leadingthePeachBelt. Armstrongwent8-18overalland4-14inthePeachBeltunderSchmidtin2010-11and9-17overalland6-12inthePeachBeltin2009-10. Schmidt’s first season with the Pirates in 2008-09 saw Armstrong go 17-11overalland12-8inthePeachBeltConference,winningsixofitslasteightgamesheadingintothePBCTournament. The team featured first-team All-PBC selection and All-Region performer Lacey Willis.

SchmidtjoinedArmstrongin2008-09fromNorthernKentucky,whereheservedasanassistantcoachfrom2004-08.Hewasinstrumen-talinhelpingtheNorseachieveitssecondNCAADivisionIINationalChampionshipin2007-08asNorthernKentuckywent28-8anddefeatedSouthDakota63-58,inthenationalchampionshipgame. DuringhisfourseasonswiththeNorse,heassistedheadcoachNancyWinstelinallaspectsoftheNorthernKentuckyprogram,includ-ingrecruiting,scouting,practiceandgame-daycoaching,andhelpedtheNorsetoa92-32recordduringthatspan. AnativeofJohnstown,Pa.,SchmidtspentthreeseasonsasanassistantcoachattheUniversityofFindlaypriortojoiningtheNorthernKentuckycoachingstaff.Healsopre-viouslyservedasanassistantcoachatbothWestVirginiaandtheUniversityofMaryland-BaltimoreCounty. RehmertjoinsArmstrongfromLimestoneCollege,wheresheservedasanassistant coach for the 2011-12 season. Limestone earned its first NCAA Cham-pionshipsberthlastseason,going25-7overall,settingaschoolrecordforwinsandcapturingtheConferenceCarolinasregularseasonandtournamentchampion-ships. PriortoLimestone,Rehmertservedastheinterimheadcoachforthewomen’sbasketballteamatDivisionIIIOglethorpeUniversitymidwaythroughthe2009-10seasonafterspendingtwoyearsastheassistantwomen’sbasketballcoachfortheStormyPetrels. During her first year at the helm of the Armstrong athletic department, the Pirates experiencedunprecedentedsuccess,winningaleague-recordsevenPeachBeltConfer-encechampionshipsandcapturingtheCommissioner’sCup,theleague’sall-sportstrophy for the first time in school history. The Pirates also added their ninth and 10th NCAADIINationalChampionshipsinmen’sandwomen’stennis,respectively,attheDIISpringSportsFestivalinLouisville. SweanyjoinedArmstronginJulyof2011,comingfromfellowNCAADivisionIIschoolGrandValleyState,wheresheservedasassistantADandthenseniorassociateADfortenyears.WiththeLakers,Sweanywasresponsibleforbudget,personnelandfacilitiesmanagement.Herotherdutiesincludeddirectsupervisionofsevencoaches,overseeinggameandeventoperations,aswellasmanagementofallathleticspersonnel.Inaddition,Sweanycoordinatedallaspectsofcomplianceandeligibilityformorethan500studentathletes. SweanyisamemberoftheNationalAssociationofCollegiateWomenAthleticsAdministratorsandtheNationalAssociationofCollegiateDirectorsofAthletics,aswellasthepresidentoftheCEFMA(CollegiateEventandFacilityManagementAssociation)for2012-13.From2010,sheservedaschairoftheNCAAMidwestRegionalforSoftball,helpingtooverseerankingsintheregion. She is the seventh Armstrong president and the first woman to lead the insti-tutionsincetheestablishmentofArmstrongJuniorCollegein1935. AwomanwithdeeprootsinIowafarmcountry,BleickenbeganhercareeratGeor-giaSouthernasanassistantprofessorofmanagementin1990.Overthefollowingyearsshewouldserveasactingchairofthedepartmentofmanagement,associatedeanoftheCollegeofBusinessAdministration,vicepresidentforstudentaffairs,actingprovostandvicepresidentforacademicaffairsandlastlyprovost,apositionsheheldsince2005. AmarketingmajorfromGeorgiaStateUniversitywhograduatedmagnacumlaude,Bleicken’sexperiencesinthebusinessarenaincludeaforayintorealestateinAtlantaasownerandmanagerofresidentialpropertiesandservingasasalesrepresentativeforInnerfaceInternational.ShealsospenttwoyearsinmarketingresearchforBellSouthandBrittainAssociates,bothinAtlanta. Enteringits23rdyearofexistencein2012-13,thePeachBeltConferencehascementeditsstatusasoneoftheeliteDi-visionIIconferencesinthenation.Sinceitsinceptionin1990-91,thePeachBelthasdevelopedaconsistenthistoryofex-cellencewhichcontinuestothisdaywith32nationalchampionshipsand28nationalfinalists. Startingwithonlytwochampionshipsin1991,men’sandwomen’sbasketball,theconferencehasexpandedto15champion-shipsportswiththeadditionofmen’sandwomen’s track and field in the spring of 2013. TheconferencetracesitsrootsbacktoNovember of 1988 when 11 schools first metinGreenville,S.C.toformaDivisionIIconference.Followingasecondmeetingon Dec. 3, 1989, five of those 11 schools, plustwoothers,formedthePeachBeltandbeginplayinfall1990. Since then,USCAmen’sgolfhaswonthreestraightnationaltitlesfrom2004-06. ThePBCisinthemidstofanotherdynastyastheArmstrongmen’sandwomen’stennisteamscapturedthe31stand32ndnationalchampionshipsfortheconferencelastyear.ThePirateshavewonfourwomen’sandthreemen’sna-tionalchampionshipssince2008. Armstrong’sachievementwasthehighlighttooneofthemostsuccessfulseasonsinleaguehistory.PeachBeltteamsadvancedtothenationalcham-pionshiproundofcompetitionin10ofour13sports.TheArmstrongwomen’ssoccer team reached the final four for the first time in program history. In all, 59 PeachBeltteamsmadeappearancesintheNCAApostseason,includingsevenmen’stennisteamsandsixeachinthesportsofmen’sgolfandwomen’stennis.
