ear Friends,What a year 2012-2013 was with the culmination of our 100th Anniversary celebrations!

We are pleased and honored to share the highlights of our past fiscal year with you in this annual report. Long Beach Day Nursery has successfully closed the books on this past fiscal year in a strong position and in good financial health. Some of the highlights for 2012-2013 include our successful 100th Anniversary and Stepping

Stones to Success Scholarship Program campaigns which finished off the fiscal year with a bang. Stepping Stones to Success, led by Barbara Bixby Blackwell and Jean Bixby Smith, raised almost $100,000 and our 100th Anniversary Investors contributed to our strongest fiscal year finish in recent history. Thank you, Barbara and Jean for your dedication and spunk that you brought to this year’s campaign and to all who raised the fundraising bar during the culmina-tion of our 100th Anniversary year! Additional highlights during this year included the welcoming of new Board Members Gina

Ballard, Robyn Gordon-Peterson, Lynn Shrum and Debbie Thrope. Long Beach Day Nursery was recognized as the first recipient of the prestigious Non-profit of the Year awarded by the Press-Telegram which included a $2,500 award. Also, the Nursery received funds by the Rotary Club of Long Beach to create a Rotary Village play area at our West Branch where our children enjoy ordering food at the mock drive-thru and gassing up their vehicles at the pretend gas pumps! A special thank you and well wishes go out to our former Executive Director, Patrice Wong,

who concluded her tenure with us after eleven years with the Nursery. Her leadership of the Long Beach Day Nursery is truly appreciated. We thank you, all of our long-time supporters, generous foundations, and friends, and are

grateful for all whom share the vision of our founders. Your gifts enable the Long Beach Day Nursery to remain true to our mission to provide quality early

care and education for young children of working parents.

The Stepping Stones to Success campaign was just the latest activity in a long history of LBDN

receiving Jean and Barbara’s support. Both are past board members and board chairs and are currently honorary board members, having served on the board for nine years. The Bixby name has been associated with the Nursery for over 100 years. Your contri-butions for Stepping Stones to Success will assist us in providing scholarships to working families who are unable to afford high quality child care in our community. or over a century, LBDN has graduated young children who, upon entering kindergarten, were well prepared to take full advantage of their school experience. Today, LBDN serves approximately 320 children annually, ages 6 weeks to 6 years. As a part of our commitment to follow best practices in the early childhood education field, we have developed specialized educational

components that allow us to better meet the specific needs of our children, families, and teachers. These programs include:

LBDN Programs Encourage Personal Growth and Development

FLBDN Programs Encourage Personal Growth and Development

Early Intervention Program (EIP):When developmental or behavioral issues are identified, LBDN’s

groundbreaking EIP facilitates an intervention response that involves our teachers, our consulting child psychologist and the family. On-site intervention specialists coordinate all EIP activities to ensure an integrated and holistic approach.

"Ready to Read" Early Literacy:The Ready to Read curriculum, beginning with even the very

youngest infants (6 weeks old), consists of at least two focused hours of activities each day in every classroom that integrate sci-ence, language arts, art, drama, story-telling, song time, puzzle play, dramatic play, and other activities that focus not only on lan-guage and literacy enhancement, but also on development of the children’s large and small motor skills. Literacy and language development activities are integrated in play activities throughout the day as well.

Math:Math is integrated informally throughout the day as children are

playing and doing everyday activities, such as cooking and sand/water play, as well as during more routine times such as lining up to go outside or serving themselves lunch. Math is also incorpo-rated more formally through activities that provide opportunities for children to sort objects according to attributes, create pat-terns, or graph their classmates’ responses to questions such as “what is your favorite color?”

Healthy Connections:Recognizing the important role early health services can play in a

child’s life, LBDN offers a range of services including screenings (hearing, vision, dental), parent workshops on health and nutrition issues, classroom health-related presentations designed for chil-dren and, weather permitting, daily outdoor play. LBDN is also committed to ongoing improvement in our nutrition program; our meals exceed USDA standards and are aligned with the recom-mendations of American Academy of Pediatrics.

Parent Engagement:We host regular workshops that teach parents about child

development, provide them with appropriate parenting tech-niques and educate them about the importance of their involve-ment with their children’s education. In addition, we have biannual parent/teacher conferences (more frequently, if needed) to be sure our parents are up-to-date on the status of the child’s development. We use evaluation and assessment tools which are designed to be used by parents and allow teachers to more objectively deal with parental concerns and has more effectively engaged parents in any necessary intervention strategies. Each site also has an active Parent Advisory Committee that gives parents the opportunity to get to know each other, support the Nursery with small fundraisers, and provide input on issues relating to their children.
