2012-13 UNCG VISITOR’S GUIDE - 3
GREENSBORO COLISEUM UNCG's men's basketball team moved into a "new" home in 2009-10, making the Greensboro Coliseum its home court. As a preview of things to come, UNCG hosted Davidson in its new venue two months later and drew a crowd of 11,687. On Decem-ber 29, 2010 a UNCG record attendance of 22,178 watched the Spartans host the Duke Blue Devils. At full capacity, the building holds more than 23,000 fans for basketball. UNCG utilizes a variety of configurations for its contests with a minimum capacity of 7,617. As part of the move, the Coliseum remodeled a floor to become a Spartan "home floor" and also completely renovated a massive locker room space for the team, complete with training room, meeting facilities, coaches offices and a players' lounge.
The Coliseum’s rich history of hosting sporting events is highlighted by its long and distinguished list of ACC and NCAA basketball action, making it the most frequent home of ACC championships, having hosted 23 men's tournaments and 12 women's events. In addition, the Coliseum has also been the site of 12 NCAA men's tournament competitions and three NCAA women's tournaments. The Coliseum has also served as the home for professional basketball, several professional ice hockey franchises, two indoor football teams and has hosted a multitude of tennis, boxing, track and field, amateur and professional wrestling and gymnastics events.
FLEMING GYMNASIUM Michael B. Fleming Gymnasium is located in the Health and Human Performance Building, a $16.2 million facility that opened on campus in June 1989. Before the 2006-07 season, Fleming Gym underwent a facelift to improve seating amenities. The new seating includes chairback seating on the lower half with bleacher bench seating in the upper half.
The gymnasium, which has seating for more than 1,800 for basketball and 1,200 for volleyball, was named for Fleming, a Greensboro civic leader and one of the most ardent supporters of UNCG athletics, on Dec. 1, 1994. Spartan teams first occupied the gym during the 1989-90 academic year. In the summer of 2011, a project to overhaul the team locker room areas began. The project included expanded, modernized space for numerous UNCG teams and also meeting areas for video breakdown and other activities.

UNCG SPARTANS - FACILITIES
UNCG SOFTBALL STADIUM The UNCG softball team moved into the brand new $3 million UNCG Softball Stadium for the 2006 season. Located on the site of the old UNCG Softball Field, hosted its first contest on Feb. 22, 2006, when the Spartans welcomed Radford for a non-conference doubleheader. The UNCG Softball Stadium served as the site for the 2007 Southern Conference Softball Tournament and will host the tournament again in 2013. On April 10, 2008 UNCG hosted Team USA in an exhibition as USA Softball took on teams throughout the country in its “Bound 4 Beijing” tour. The game was played in front of a packed house as 1,500 fans attended to see the Olympic team compete. The complex includes a stadium with 500 permanent seats, a press box, a concession area behind home plate, spacious restroom facilities, a grounds storage building and an indoor hitting facility.
UNCG BASEBALL STADIUM Home to the UNCG baseball team since 1999, UNCG Baseball Stadium was dedicated versus George Washington on Feb. 12 of that year before an overflow crowd of 1,835. In the fall of 2010, work was completed on a $2.3 million fieldhouse that sits along the
first base line. The new 10,000-square-foot facility provides numerous uses for the
program. The building has a team locker room; a lounge area for players; a locker room
for the coaching staff; two batting cages; an equipment room; and a training room.
The stadium is set on approximately 13 acres and includes a state-of-the-art baseball field, offices, a press box, a
ticket office, concession building, public restrooms and a grounds maintenance building. The stadium includes 889 fixed, fold-down seats and grass slopes along both foul lines that provide space for additional seating. With the availability of the additional seating, the capacity of UNCG Baseball Stadium approaches 3,500.
2012-13 UNCG VISITOR’S GUIDE - 4
UNCG SOCCER STADIUM The UNCG Soccer Stadium is a modern soccer-only facility located in the heart of campus. Both the men’s and women’s teams celebrated their 20th season in the state-of-the-art facility in 2010. UNCG played on the same site, then known as Campus Field, through the 1990 season. On Dec. 6, 1990, ground was broken on the $3.6 million stadium that fans see today. Prior to the renovation, the UNCG men’s soccer team was as dominant on its home field as it is today. The site of UNCG Soccer Stadium has served as the home field for the Spartans for more than 25 seasons. Both teams have won more than 70 percent of their matches on the home pitch. The stadium rivals any collegiate soccer facility in the nation with several outstanding features including permanent seating for 3,540 spectators in the grandstand along the east sideline, a new scoreboard with a video message center, press box and brick wall completely surrounding the facility. Besides providing UNCG’s teams with a first-class home, the stadium has also attracted a number of outside events to the campus. UNCG hosted the semifinal and final rounds of the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship in 1997 and 1998, focusing nationwide attention on Greensboro and the university. A then-championship record 20,058 fans attended in 1998, including a stadium single-event record 10,583 for the final. The championship was nationally televised by ESPN.
OUR GAME. OUR GREENSBORO.
FOREST OAKS COUNTRY CLUB Forest Oaks is home to UNCG's Bridgestone Intercollegiate and is the home course of the Spartan men's golf team. Carved from North Carolina hardwoods by noted architect Ellis Maples, Forest Oaks opened in 1962 to wide acclaim. It was already known as one of the best tests of golf in a state known for great golf tests when it became the home course of the venerable Greater Greensboro Open in 1977. It served as a PGA Tour stop for more than 30 years.
STARMOUNT FOREST COUNTRY CLUB Wayne Stiles and John Van Kleek of Boston, Mass., designed the original Starmount Forest golf course and it was completed with consultation from Perry Maxwell. The course formally opened for play on Aug. 1, 1930 and serves as the home course of the Spartan women’s team. During its 75-plus years of existence, Starmount Forest has hosted many professional and amateur tournaments and is the only championship golf course in the city of Greensboro. Starmount Forest hosted the 2001 N.C. Senior Amateur Championship, the 2004 N.C. Mid-Am Championship, the 2004 Southern Conference Women's Golf Championship, and the 2007 N.C. Amateur Championship. The course covers 155 acres and offers a tremendous test for the most avid golfer. Four tees are available for play: Black, White, Blue and Green.
UNCG SPARTANS - FACILITIES
UNCG TENNIS COURTS Constructed in the summer and fall of 2000, the UNCG Tennis Courts serve as the home facility for the Spartan men's and women's tennis teams. Situated between the UNCG Soccer Stadium and Fleming Gymnasium, the facility includes 12 lighted courts, a meeting area on the south end of the courts, 24 player benches and elevated seating for approximately 350 fans. The facility underwent renovations in the summer of 2010. The courts have been completely resurfaced and have been changed to a more attractive blue court -- sometimes called "US Open-style" as Flushing Meadows switched to them prior to 2005. The Australian Open followed suit in 2008.
