Dear Fellow Husky,

Your journey has finally begun! Congratulations on your admittance to the University of Washington, and welcome to Husky Nation. My name is David Bretl and I am the current Interfraternity Council (IFC) President.

As your undergraduate career commences, you will find that the University of Washing-ton offers a wide variety of opportunities to enhance your collegiate experience. You have already taken the first step by enrolling in Early Fall Start, and I hope that your time in this program allows you to form new friendships and become accustomed to life as a Husky. One of the most rewarding opportunities our University offers to its students, however, is the ability to join a fraternity. Fraternities provide students the opportunity to achieve academic excellence, leader-ship experience, and constant networking. Our all-fraternity GPA is well above the all-men’s average at UW, and it continues to climb each year. We are lucky enough to have 32 IFC fraternities on campus, offering a wide variety of homes to more than 1,750 gen-tlemen who tend to be the leaders on our campus. Beyond academics and leadership, fraternity gentlemen also have the opportunity to participate in athletics, service proj-ects, and philanthropies. In fact, last year alone, our fraternities were able to raise more than $285,000 for countless different charities around the world. Amazingly enough, this number increases annually, helping to peg our community as one of the strongest on the West coast.

Fraternity recruitment at UW is an informal, year-round process, but generally the bulk of it occurs during summer and early fall. As such, now is a great time to learn more about fraternity life. The best way to check out our different fraternities is to either sign up on our online recruitment list or contact recruitment chairmen on your own. Both can be done by going to uwgreeks.com and clicking on “Interfraternity Council.” I encourage you to explore this web site for even more background about fraternity life.

Year after year, more men are realizing how powerful the Greek experience can truly be. Our community is growing, both in quantity and quality, and I want you to be a part of it. To put it simply, the purpose of fraternities is to make men better men. Today, you have the opportunity to meet the men who live by this creed on a daily basis. Today could be the start of an incredible, lifelong experience. I urge you to seize this opportunity. Achieve excellence. Go Greek.

Regards,

David BretlInterfraternity Council PresidentUniversity of Washington

Alumni and national organiza-tions, in conjunction with the student leaders of each orga-nization, set the dues/rent rates for each group and try to keep costs as low as possible. About Why is this fraternity different from all other fraternities? As the nation’s pre-miere Jewish fraternity, our goal is to foster brotherhood, Jewish identity, and lifelong friendships. Our chapter puts em-phasis on high academic standards, active social involvement in University life, and continuing philanthropy in the greater Jewish community. We promote a wide range of activities, such as athletic, inter-Greek events, outdoor excursions, and a myriad of other experiences. We also offer young men the opportunity to hone their leadership skills by actively participating in the planning, logistics and execution of events. We provide an atmosphere for young men to grow and become leaders in all phases of life.

“Committed to the Lives of Excellence.” In all aspects of our lives we live by this mot-to. We strive to maintain quality grades, build lasting friendships, and positively impact the community. We achieve this by providing resources for personal and academic success, as well as hosting and attending social and philanthropic events. Some resources we provide include peer mentoring, a spacious study room with study material for common classes, and a workout room. We are involved socially with exchanges, grab-a-dates, sports and brotherhood events every month, as well as a few formal dances. Our community in-volvement is exemplified by volunteering around Seattle (YMCA, UW) and by par-ticipation in various philanthropies. Our primary philanthropic interest is our own Miss Greek, which we host each year as a fundraiser to support Fred Hutchinson in efforts to understand and fight cancer. This past year, the event raised $92,000.

Delta upsilon Kappa Alpha Order

There are no secrets with Delta Upsilon. No secret rituals. No secret oaths. No hazing. We are proud of what DU stands for and proud to be the world’s only international fraternity committed to sharing our ideals, symbols, and rituals openly. Our motto is Δικαια Yποθηκη – Justice Our Foundation. We have found ways to live by that motto through our four founding principles: Pro-motion of Friendship, Development of Character, Diffusion of Liberal Culture, & Advancement of Justice. These principles challenge our brothers to expect nothing less than excellence from themselves and others. The Washington Chapter of Delta Upsilon recently celebrated its 100th year on campus, a century of success and inno-vation. We have a unique home, with a full sized basketball court, weight room, park-ing lot and professional kitchen. Our for-mal room and library have recently been remodeled and other renovations are on the way. During the school year we have 60+ members living in the house without the use of a freshman sleeping porch. Our brothers are as diverse as the campus we reside on and have come together under the common cause of self improvement. Here at DU we are proud to continually be Building Better Men!

Kappa Alpha is more than just a fraternity of brothers; we are an order of men. Dedi-cated to the concepts of chivalry, respect and gentlemanly conduct, Kappa Alpha is not an organization that looks to mold oth-ers into our image. In our eyes you either understand what it means to be a gentle-man of virtue and compassion or you do not. As KAs we live by a simple word “Ex-celsior,” meaning “Ever Upward;” it is a constant reminder to strive for excellence. This concept manifests itself in all we do, not only in our academics and character, but also our community. The altruism of Kappa Alpha is felt across the region as we openly volunteer with the Northwest Adoption Exchange, Seattle Children’s Hospital, the Red Cross and the Patrons of Northwest Civic, Cultural and Chari-table Organizations. By undertaking this lifestyle together the KAs at the University of Washington develop a bond of brother-hood that stands the test of time and dis-tance. It is our common goal of excellence and integrity that connects all of us. We are gentleman of honor; do you have what it takes?

The University of Washington Fiji house is the largest fraternity on campus with more than 100 members. We are ex-tremely proud of the strong sense of brotherhood that our members develop while living within our walls. The commit-ment we show to academics and commu-nity service is unrivaled among the Greek community. This year marked the 50th consecutive year that our grade point av-erage was above the all men’s average at the University of Washington. Last year alone, members of our fraternity biked from the Canadian border all the way to Tiawana, Mexico and raised $25,000 for Cancer Lifeline. This upcoming year, mem-bers of the Fiji house will simultaneously summit five state peaks: Mt. Rainier, Mt. Adams, Mt. Baker, Mt. St. Helens, and Glacier Peak. Our efforts will raise money for “Construction for Change”, and five to eight of our members will travel to Zambia to help build a school for poor communi-ties. The Fiji house welcomes you and any questions you may have.

Phi Kappa Psi Phi kappa sigma

Phi Kappa Psi is one of the oldest fraterni-ties on campus and in the U.S. We were founded on one major principal, The Great Joy of Serving Others. Because of this, we host community service events frequently. Besides community service, Scholarship is our largest priority. We of-fer $20,000 in scholarships every year for undergraduates living in the house for reasons such as: Academics, Leadership, Financial Need, and Community Service. On top of the $20,000, there is a new scholarship offered this year. Any person who signs our house for next fall, earns a 3.25 GPA, and gets initiated will automati-cally get $1000. This is not included in the $20,000 mentioned before. For example, if you earn a 3.45 GPA or higher fall quar-ter, you will qualify for the signing bonus and the academic scholarship, meaning you will earn $1750 in scholarship money in one quarter. Finally, every Spring Break we offer (for the price of a plane ticket) an all expense paid trip to Cabo for a Phi Psi only networking conference with influen-tial alumni. It is a life changing experience. Come check us out!

Psi Upsilon is a way of life. No two broth-

ers will have the same “Psi U Experience,”

yet Psi Upsilon itself is invariable with its

principals and standards. The fundamen-

tal nature of these principals has given Psi

Upsilon the strength to flourish since its

inception in 1833. These standards and

ideals may at times seem impossible to

achieve but this difficulty does not make

them any less noble. The strength of Psi

but in its diversity. While all different,

we have common goals regarding broth-

the strengthening of this bond lies in the

Sigma Beta Rho has grown considerably since its inception. It has expanded from its roots in the East Coast with 17 recog-nized chapters and colonies that span the breadth of the nation. Through the efforts of our brothers and the reputation that precedes them, we have become the larg-est and most expansive fraternity of our kind in just ten short years. As every day passes, we realize that we are another day closer to the nationwide network envi-sioned by our Founding Fathers. We have also received seven consecutive Peterson Awards; the highest award possible for an undergraduate Sigma Chi Chapter. From our philanthropy Derby Days, benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation, to Husky Football and Basketball Games, and our Annual Sweetheart Weekend in Whistler, BC, we kept a very busy social schedule while still maintaining a 3.31 House Cumu-lative GPA in the 2010-2011 School Year. With strong Alumni Relations, a freshly renovated Chapter House, and exceptional tradition, we couldn’t be more proud to be Huskies and look forward to the upcoming year.

Sigma Nu was founded in 1869 by three cadets at the Virginia Military Institute at a time when physical abuse and hazing of underclassmen was commonplace. Na-tionally, Sigma Nu is the only fraternity founded against hazing. The Gamma Chi Chapter of Sigma Nu at the UW offers stu-dents a balance of academic excellence, philanthropic achievement, and close-knit brotherhood combined with diversity and character that remains unrivaled in the Greek system. The fraternity was found-ed on the principles of Love, Honor, and Truth, and we recruit men who value and exemplify these principles. As a chapter, we participate in IMA sports and hold mul-tiple social events every quarter. Above all, we value academics and philanthropy. At Sigma Nu we maintain a standard to keep our house GPA above both the UW men’s average GPA and the fraternity average GPA. Our Pride Philanthropy, Springfest, is held annually in honor of Colin Carty, a brother who passed away from brain can-cer in 2008, and raises money to support brain cancer research at Swedish Medi-cal Center. Upon joining Sigma Nu, you become part of a tradition that promotes strong values and a lifelong brotherhood.

Scholarship Information: $500 educational credit to all new members who achieve a minimum 3.4 overall quarter GPA.

We also focus on realms of athletics and fitness, hosting multiple teams for each Intramural sport; we have achieved multiple championships in the past years. Some of our members participate in the sports teams UW has to offer, including Basketball, Lacrosse and Crew. SigEp also boasts a strong social calendar. Holding multiple brotherhood events a quarter, we also coordinate Grab-A-Dates and Exchanges, and host one for-mal every quarter, including our annual Golden Heart trip to Vancouver, BC. From fundraising for St. Jude Children’s hospital during our annual Teke Week to our various chapter-sponsored alumni events, TKE Chi Chapter bolsters a rich tradition that gives members the op-portunity to reach their professional goals after graduation. Just this past year, our chapter was recognized with the Top Teke Award from our National Chapter, which included our efficient operation as a TKE Chapter based on excellence in chapter administration, campus activities, and scholarship. Although this is a national award, this can also be related to our in-volvement on campus at the University of Washington where we excel in intramural activities, philanthropic events, and com-munity service. Tau Kappa Epsilon is a very diverse house that prides itself on the life-long brotherhood that is created during the four years within the walls of the white house with red shutters.

A Snapshot...Upon arriving at UW, a student will be faced with numerous challenges that will continue throughout their college career - establishing new friendships, adjusting to the rigors of college academics, developing leadership skills, and taking part in philanthropic, service, and social activities. Only a fraternity can provide all these opportunities, and many oth-ers, in one single organization. Combined with the bonds of brotherhood, the experi-ence lasts a lifetime.

Fraternity Living

Fraternities at Washington offer the unique learning experience of living in a fraternity house as a freshman. From the very beginning, new members learn and grow from the close contact and cooperative spirit of living in a house. From meals, to study time, to leadership, and service to the community, the bonds developed in a close living-learning environment create a home away from home.

Social Activities

Offering a break from the demands of the classroom is one of the benefits of mem-bership. Throughout the year a fraternity will participate in many social events such as exchanges, formals, pre-game tailgates, barbecues, canoe trips, and more. These events offer a good time and a great opportunity to meet and interact with members of other fraternities and sororities. Social activities are not required, but there is no comparison anywhere to the variety, scope, and just plain fun of fraternity and sorority social events.

Athletics

Each fraternity participates in numerous competitive sports through intramurals and philanthropic tournaments. It’s difficult for just one person to get a group to play team intramural sports, outdoor paintball, or to get a softball game together on a Sunday af-ternoon; fraternities offer all of this along with the pride of sportsmanship, team spirit, and competition.

Leadership

Fraternities offer a wide range of leadership involvement opportunities that serve to help develop members outside of the classroom. Everyone in the fraternity has the op-portunity to be a leader, whether as an officer, member of a committee, or just an active participant. Members learn by doing--managing a budget, running effective meetings, speaking in public, motivating others, organizing an event, etc. All of these skills are valu-able in achieving success at UW as well as in a future career. These days it takes more than just a degree to get a good job--it takes leadership experience.

Academics

A primary purpose of the fraternity community is to encourage and develop high scho-lastic achievement among its members. Several factors contribute to this academic atmosphere, including peer tutoring, upperclassman counseling, incentive programs, grade requirements, and a built in mentor support and study network. The combination of friendships and brotherhood, intermingling with solid goals of academic excellence help one become a wellrounded, intelligent member of the university community and in society upon graduation.

Career Networking

Joining a fraternity can be an investment in one’s future! The opportunity to meet and network with successful alumni, both locally and nationally, is yet another benefit of-fered by membership. From summer jobs and internships to fulltime careers, the con-nections developed while in college can provide a head start in life.

Community Service & Philanthropy

Fraternities provide members with the opportunity to give back to the surrounding com-munity through service (participants engage in activities to directly help others) and phi-lanthropy (participants raise money for charitable organizations). Fraternities sponsor, co-sponsor, and participate in more service and fundraising activities than other student organizations, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars annually for various philanthro-pies, and providing thousands of hours of service each year. To complement service ini-tiatives, every organization plans at least one philanthropic event a year and donates the proceeds to a charity of its choice. Helping to better the community also helps build character and responsibility in a fraternity member.

Brotherhood

Within each organization, there is a close bond of friendship and brotherhood culti-vated through the concept of individualism within the framework of mutual coopera-tion. Members form friendships unlike any found in other organizations. By choosing to become a member of a fraternity or sorority, a student will meet brothers who grow to become his closest friends; those who will cheer you on when you’re successful and who will offer support when the going gets tough. From this unbreakable support system a student can easily branch off into other areas of college life, knowing all the while that one’s brothers will be there no matter what.
