The cover artists will be on hand to help you design your cover —from concept to final artwork touchups. They can suggest cool design techniques that will make your pages come alive and transform words and pictures into a compelling story of your school.

What do students look at first when opening their yearbook? The pictures! JOHN SCOTT is, a photojournalist that advises yearbook at Thomas Downey High School. His students have won more than 20 national photo awards. John’s photography classes have inspired many staffs to take their photography to the next level. Each school should send at least one photographer to be put to the test. Yearbooks in the bay area have not been the same after learning from this pro!

BErnADETTE crAnmEr, cJE, has dealt with her fair share of challenges while advising Pacemaker and Best of Show newsmagazines at two California high schools for ten years. Her first book won “Best in the West” at the Northern California JEA State Convention in November 2007. She specializes in design and concept d e v e l o p m e n t .

PARTICIPANT AND PARENT RELEASE FORM: Yearbook University YEARBOOK WORKSHOP

(photocopy one per minor participant)In order to assure a fun and educational workshop, we ask that participants and their parent/guardian read the following rights and responsibilities. After reading, please complete this form, sign it and return it to Yearbook University with your payment. Signatures of both the student participant and parent/guardian are required.

Participant Responsibilities • Participants agree to respect the rights of others, including the person, property and furnishings of other participants and instructors, employees of

the workshop facility and the rooms and buildings of the workshop facility. The participant and parent/guardian agree to pay for any damages or loss.

• Participants agree to keep their adviser informed of their activities and whereabouts at all times. Participants may not leave the workshop site (except for authorized events) without permission to do so from the adviser.

• Participants registered overnight must be in their own rooms and quiet at, and after curfew.

• Participants agree to wear identification name badges at all times, including social functions.

• Participants agree to conduct themselves in a respectful and well-behaved manner at all times and follow the direction of workshop staff, other adult supervisors and facility employees.

• Profanity, smoking or the use of any other tobacco product, the possession and/or use of alcohol, drugs or drug paraphernalia not prescribed by a qualified physician are absolutely forbidden.

• Participants and parents understand that violation of these rules will result in the immediate dismissal of the participant from further participation in the workshop. The parents will be notified and the participant will be turned over to the proper authorities or sent home as soon as possible. If a participant is sent home, the parents agree to be responsible for picking the participant up from the workshop location.

Participant and Parent Responsibilities and Authorizations • Participants and their parent/guardian understand that despite efforts by Yearbook University and the facility to provide a safe workshop, the

participant may become ill, suffer injury or loss. The participant and parent acknowledge that they are assuming the risk of such illness or injury or loss by participating in the workshop. In the event of an illness or injury, the participant and parent authorize Yearbook University or the school advisor to obtain necessary medical treatment for the participant and release and hold harmless Yearbook University, the workshop facility, the school and their respective shareholders, directors, officers, employees, agents and representatives (all together, “Representatives”) in the exercise of this authority. The participant and parent/guardian acknowledge and agree to be responsible for any and all medical and related bills that may be incurred on behalf of the participant.

• Participants and their parents/guardian authorize Yearbook University to use workshop photographs, narratives, and video footage and results of the participant’s creative efforts for promotional and illustrative purposes.

• Participants and their parent/guardian release and hold harmless Yearbook University, Balfour, Scot and Shelly Townsend, the facility (Menlo College), and their representatives from any and all liability for any damage, loss, liability, cost and expense, including attorneys’ fees arising out of or connected with the workshop, and all activities associated with the workshop.
