Ohio Soccer HistorySoccer first appeared as a varsity sport at Ohio on the men’s side in 1956. John McComb, who served four years in the Army before graduating from Boston University, became the Bobcats’ soccer and hockey head coach in 1957.

McComb, also an assistant professor of physical education, led Ohio to its first Ohio Intercollegiate Soccer Championship in 1962 behind leading-scorer John Haynes and All-Midwest goalie Roger Berthold.

The Bobcats played in their first NCAA Tournament in 1965, falling 2-1 to eventual national champion St. Louis. Sam Roberts, who played for the Liberian national team, led the team in goals that year with 11 while halfback John Eastman became Ohio’s first soccer All-American.

Phil Roach took over the soccer reins in 1967 so McComb could devote his time to the hockey program. Behind All-American defender Ihor Miskewycz, the Bobcats rebounded from a 1-6-2 record in Roach’s debut to a 7-3-1 campaign in 1968.

Tiff Cook succeeded Roach in 1970 after a successful undergraduate career at Ohio. Cook organized the Bobcats’ first lacrosse club and became its Most Valuable Player in 1967. He also was named the Bobcat of the Decade in ice hockey. In addition to his soccer duties, Cook was also the head lacrosse coach and a physical education teacher at Ohio.

Cook’s Bobcats followed up a 9-3 campaign in 1970 with a 15-2-2 record in 1971, including a 5-1-1 mark on a trip to England and an NCAA Tournament loss to St. Louis. Ed Roberts, an All-American honorable mention in 1970, joined fellow Bobcat Andy Smiles on the All-American squad in 1971.

So that Cook – who still teaches at Ohio – could devote more time to academics, the university hired Dennis Buford to coach the soccer program in 1972. Fresh off a Mid-American Conference title in wrestling and first-team All-MAC honors in soccer at Western Michigan, Buford led the Bobcats back to the NCAA Tournament in his first and only season. Ohio defeated Air Force 3-2 for its first-ever postseason win before once again falling to eventual champion St. Louis in the Midwest finals in Athens. Smiles became the Bobcats’ first two-time All-American by receiving the honor following the 1972 season in which Ohio finished 11-3-1.

Budget cuts in 1973 eliminated a salary for a soccer coach so Italian language professor Dr. Gianni Spera volunteered his leisure time to coach the Bobcats. One of Spera’s assistant coaches, Earl Draper, took over the program in 1974 and tried to keep the Bobcats afloat. In 1977, however, the university was no longer financially able to support men’s soccer so the team was dissolved.

Twenty years later, a women’s varsity soccer team took the field for the first time in Ohio’s history. Under the leadership of head coach Wendy Logan, the Bobcats went 10-6-2 in their debut season, including a tie for second place with a 4-2-1 MAC record.

For her efforts, Logan was named MAC Co-Coach of the Year while forward Mindy Boggs was MAC Newcomer of the Year. In addition, the online publication, Soccer Buzz Magazine, ranked Ohio third nationally among first-year programs and singled out Boggs as both its Freshman of the Year and National Player of the Year. By posting a 16-6 record and a 9-1 conference mark, the Bobcats won their first share of the MAC title in 1998. Logan earned Coach-of-the-Year honors from the MAC and the Ohio Soccer Coaches Association. The OSCA also named Boggs the Player of the Year as she joined four other teammates – Vanessa Dennis, Marie LaGuardia, Nicki Pendleton and Lori Spitler – with numerous postseason honors.

Following the 1999 season, Logan left to become the head coach at the University of Iowa and Stacy Strauss was hired to replace her.

Strauss, a native of Bay Village and a record-setting goalkeeper while at Kenyon College, led Ohio to a 10-9 record in her initial season, including a 7-4 conference mark. The Bobcats then won their first outright MAC title in 2001 by posting a 10-2 conference record on their way to a 12-9 overall mark.

All-MAC selections Abby Leopold, Christel Schiering, Rachael Najjar and Crystal Reed, along with goalie Michelle Meglaughlin (MAC-leading seven shutouts) led Ohio to the MAC Tournament Championship match in 2002. Schiering became the school’s all-time leading goal scorer and tied the record for goals in a season with 15. Leopold, meanwhile, tied with Kendra Hornschemeier for the team record in assists with 11, a mark that ranked them best in the conference.

Hornschemeier became a first-team All-MAC selection after breaking the school’s career assists record and Tiffany Horvath was named MAC Freshman of the Year following a nine-goal, five-assist campaign in 2003.

On their way to a league-leading third MAC title in 2004, the Bobcats posted a conference-record nine straight shutouts as six Ohio players earned All-MAC accolades. Meglaughlin, Reed and Larissa Najjar were first-teamers while Horvath and Hornschemeier claimed second-team honors and Lindsey Price was named to the All-MAC Freshman Team.

Several achievements marked the 2006 season, including the 100th win in Ohio women’s soccer history. The win came against defending MAC Champion Bowling Green on Oct. 6. Freshman Rachael Goulding became just the second Bobcat freshman to be named to the All-MAC First Team while Horvath earned second team honors for the second time. Goulding and Amy Lower each earned All-MAC Freshman Team accolades.

The Bobcats suffered through an extremely difficult non-conference schedule in 2007 but performed well in MAC play, put-ting together a 5-5-1 record on their way to a sixth seed in the conference tournament. Jackie Hanson continued Ohio’s run of successful freshmen, being named to the MAC All-Freshman team after playing in 18 games (starting 12) and scoring one goal. Erika Schmitt, the Bobcats’ goal leader with seven, was named First-Team All-MAC and Goulding earned second-team honors.

Fielding young squads and fighting a hoard of injuries throughout the past two seasons, Ohio faced its share of obstacles and succeeded amidst challenging situations. After having faced a very challenging 2008 schedule that included two Top 25 programs (Georgetown and Minnesota), Strauss led Ohio to a four-game improvement in 2009, while also winning six conference road games and tying a program record with five conference road wins. In addition, the team finished fourth in the challenging 12-team MAC. This came with a squad that included 20 underclassmen. Sophomore Kelsey Pichel tied for the league lead in assists in conference play and garnered All-MAC recognition, the 22nd all-conference honor in program history.

During the 2010 season, the Bobcats were led by a strong defense that equaled program records in goals against (21) and shutouts (six). Goalkeeper Mattie Liston was named to the MAC All-Freshman Team, while Sarah Brown, a defender, was named to the All-MAC First Team.

Soccer at Ohio University first appeared as a varsity sport on the men’s side in 1956. John Eastman (left) was Ohio’s first All-American in 1965.

Wendy Logan was the first women’s soccer coach at Ohio and led the Bobcats to their first-ever MAC championship in 1998.

Chessa Field

Undoubtedly one of the finest soccer fields in the region, Chessa Field was so named in 2002 in honor of Ohio University employee Scott Blower and his wife Crista’s daughter Chessa.

Formerly called Shafer Street Field, Blower and Crista, a 1985 Ohio graduate, contributed $70,000 to the University’s Department of Athletics. The majority of the gift, $60,000, was spent to renovate the playing surface of the field, making it the school’s largest private gift to women’s athletics. The remainder of the money was used to improve landscaping near the ticket gates at Peden Stadium. This area, known as Drew Park, was named in honor of Scott and Crista’s son Drew.

As a result of the donation, the field now boasts a state-of-the-art laser-leveled and widened grass playing surface, an underground drainage system and an irrigation system. A press box at the top of the stands, a wrought-iron fence adjacent to Shafer Street and the moving of the scoreboard were also added as part of the facility’s facelift.

A resident of Lancaster, Ohio, Scott Blower was hired as athletics and West Green grounds supervisor in 2001 after spending many years as a private-business owner. Since his arrival, he has been in charge of the maintenance of the soccer field and has maintained a top-flight playing surface for Ohio soccer. This and other aspects of the field make it capable of hosting NCAA postseason play and has paid dividends in helping the Bobcats to three MAC regular-season championships.

“With the quality of this field, we have the ability to better tailor our style of play against each opponent,” Ohio coach Stacy Strauss said. “Chessa Field is among the best soccer facilities in the Mid-American Conference, and we are very fortunate to have enjoyed the many benefits brought from it.”

One of the premier swimming and diving facilities in the Mid-American Conference, the Ohio University Aquatic Center opened in January 1984 at a cost of $4.7 million.

The Olympic-size pool has 22 25-yard lanes, 10 50-meter lanes and a pair of one-meter and three-meter diving boards. Approximately 645,468.75 gallons create 12,300 square feet of surface water.

A strong athletics program begins in the weight room long before playing seasons start. Because of this, the dr. steve and Kathy Carin strength and Conditioning Center located at Peden Stadium is an important catalyst in helping all of Ohio University’s sports teams prepare for successful seasons.

The Ohio soccer team plays at Chessa Field, which was named after the 10-year-old daughter of Ohio University employee Scott Blower and his wife, Crista, a 1985 Ohio University graduate, who contributed $70,000 to the Ohio University Department of Athletics.

The 13,080-seat Convocation Center, opened in 1968, is the home site for the Ohio University basketball, volleyball and wrestling teams. The $8.2 million facility still exhibits a first-class look with the very latest in modern facilities, equipment and comfort.

The Convo, one of the largest facilities in the region, can hold more than 15,000 for convocations. The facility is an ideal site for concerts, commencements and many other activities.

Completed in May of 2000, Goldsberry track is a state-of-the-art running surface for the Ohio track and field teams.

It consists of a material called rekortan, which is a mix of rubber granules with a liquid fixative on top of asphalt.

The Ohio softball Field is one of the finest intercollegiate softball facilities in the region, with a state-of-the-art playing surface and drainage system.

Completed during the spring of 1999, the field stands alongside Bob Wren Stadium as just one of the venues that make up the Ohio Athletics Mall. Included among the amenities of the stadium are bullpens behind both the home and visitor sunken dugouts and a covered batting cage between the baseball and softball fields.

Ohio’s Peden stadium, named after former Bobcat head coach Don Peden, was built at a cost of $185,000 and was dedicated in 1929 with a 14-0 victory over Miami. As Ohio’s coach from 1924-46, Peden led his teams to 121 wins in 178 games, a record that still stands as the school’s best.

In addition to the stadium itself, the facility also contains locker rooms for the football, track and field, and field hockey programs, plus equipment and training rooms.

Pruitt Field opened in the Ohio’s Athletics Mall in 2000 and serves as the home to the Bobcats’ field hockey team. It is named in honor of Dr. Peggy Pruitt, a key figure in Ohio Athletics from 1975 to 2001.

The multi-purpose facility features a top-of-the-line artificial playing surface trimmed with a signature red brick grandstand that seats up to 1,000 specta-tors. The facility, which also encompasses Goldsberry Track, is home to Ohio’s track and field teams as well.

The seating plan at Bob wren stadium is both unique and practical. There are 100 chairback seats that are part of a VIP section, christened The Baumholtz Club in honor of Ohio’s legendary two-sport star Frank Baumholtz.

In addition, there is an area of “bleacher-back” seats akin to Cleveland’s Jacobs Field. There is also a section of regular bleachers. These three sections total about 2,000 seats.
