Gone are the days of leisure. Arrived are the days of hard work. With the new school year comes another
chance to prove ourselves on the field. Now we must physically and mentally prepare ourselves,
sacrificing our much loved junk food. Spending long hours practicing, while also spending long hours on
school work. We must be on our game 100% of the time.
As athletes we compete in a field all its own. One that is competitive and energetic; while also requiring
commitment and leadership. Together we may spend countless hours on the buses traveling, while
jamming to our iPods; or we may brag to our siblings about our first place medal. Yet, regardless of our
individual wins, we remain a team.
Together We Are the athletes that step up when a teammate is injured. Together We Are the athletes
that learn self-discipline and respect. Together We Are the athletes that hone our abilities. Together We
Are the athletes that proudly represent our school.

This season of cross country brought many changes to both teams with successes as well. The teams increased in diversity of age from last year. There were many more underclassmen with both the girls’ and boys’ teams. “There’s a really good mix this year of fresh-men, sophomore, juniors and seniors, while last year was mostly upperclassmen,” Donnie Palmer, cross country coach, said. The practices were more rigorous, with two-a-day runs several times a week. However, both teams had placed well, with the boys placing ninth during state. “There’s been more effort being put forth this year on the boys’ part; it’s been very positive,” Tracy Schnacker, cross country coach, said. There were fewer injuries as well, with only one serious injury by Aaron Braun. Unfortunate-ly, he didn’t recover before the season ended. While this cross country season had its ups and downs, the teams both managed to end on a good note.

The girls’ tennis and volleyball teams spent long hours practicing to succeed on their respective courts. The tennis team worked their way to region-als and state. Singles players, Chloe Schellhorn, 12, and Brett Fair, 10, went to city and regionals, Schellhorn went on to state. Schellhorn placed third at city, first at regionals, and 12th at state. Fair placed first at city and second at regionals. Doubles pair Jill Siebert, 11, and Lauren Rob-erts, 11, qualified for city, regionals, and state. The tennis girls started off “rough” as Schellhorn said, but came to have some of the girls go to State. They beat Highland Park, but lost to Hayden and Junction City. “We did better than usual,” Alexis Cox, 12, said. “We have lots of potential.” The volleyball team managed to get in a few more wins before the season ended. Spirit Sensation Cheer-leaders firing up the Dub-zone at a football pep assembly.
The Cheerleaders and Westsiders are the leaders of school spirit. These two groups are busy year ’round practicing, cheering, and performing for sports and competitions. This year the cheerleaders brought new spirit days and ideas to the Dubzoners going from safari day to rockstar day and everything in between. A new addition to supporting the football and basketball players this year was their very own themed run throughs for all home games. The Westsiders had another successful year with their award wining dance routines. This year they welcomed a new coach Elizabeth Schafer. Even with a new coach Westsiders still excelled in all their competitions with their creative dance routines. This year they competed in the KC Regionals Dance, Drill, and Colorguard Competi-tion earning Sweepstakes and Super Sweepstakes for high marks in each category, a Technique Award for their hip-hop routine, a Performance Award for jazz, and Judges’ Award for kick. They also won a Showmanship Award for their overall performance. Since early summer and continuing all year, they have been practicing their hip-hop, pom, and jazz routines. This year they also performed their awaited for light show and a lyrical dance for the Breast Cancer Awareness basketball game, The Cheerleaders and Westsiders through the good and bad this year have shown and help spread purple pride!.
