Alumni After students graduate from high school, they usually miss their school, their friends, and their teachers. So after these Topeka West graduates went to college, they came back to teach. The school has changed since they were students here. The covering over the walkways, while in the original plan for the school, were not added until recently. “We didn’t have any awnings,” Charles Thomson, ELC, said. “You just got rained on or snowed on.” The canopies are not the only things that have been added. Before the classroom behind the auditorium was added to A Building, the students knew the large, grassy, area that stretched from the Café to the library as ‘the hill.’ Pep assemblies were held there on nice days, and the students could eat lunch there. “Everyone would be on the hill,”Liz Fisher, Gear-Up, said. “Kids would be doing somersaults on it. We lived on the hill.” Granted, there were not as many students attending Topeka West as there are now. There was not a freshman class. There were only sophomores, juniors, and seniors on the campus until 1980. Students would still be at middle school for their freshman year, and come to high school as sophomores. Topeka West did not have a tardy system either. “We have really firmed up on attendance and tardies,”Shari Waters, associate principal, explained. ”Everyone used to be responsible for themselves; it was really up to the teachers. But the teachers had high expectations; you needed to be there.”

Outside of school, Dicus is active with her church’s youth group, swimming with Topeka Swim

“My favorite activity is swimming,” Dicus said. “I enjoyed swimming for the school, but swimming

for TSA is rewarding.”

been a part of her Youth Group for eight years.

“In my Youth Group, the members have bible studies two times a week, meet every Sunday, and

also take mission trips every summer out of state; which involves the group building new houses

for those in need,” Chitwood said. “The coolest part about my Youth Group is that every three

years we have the opportunity to go to a major city and meet 30,000 other Youth Group

leaders.”

three years, but was unable to play her senior year due to a knee injury. This will be her fourth

fun memories on the bus rides to games,” Wilder said.
