Northeast Mississippi CoMMuNity College

Northeast Mississippi Community College sophomore wide receiver Markie Dukes of Ox-ford has become one of the ultimate “team play-ers” for the Tigers in 2011.Dukes, a 2010 graduate of Lafayette County

High School, helped lead the Commodores to a 14-2 mark, a North Half Championship and a runner-up finish in the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 4A State Championship game in his senior season. However, Dukes made an unselfish commit-

ment to his teammates at Northeast and shifted his focus from me to the team upon his arrival in Booneville. In high school, Dukes was a standout ath-

lete who manned both sides of the ball for the Commodores. Not only did Dukes help lead Lafayette County to 509 points during his se-nior season with three scores and a two-point conversion as a wide receiver, but Dukes also helped hold the opposition to just 184 points at the linebacker/safety spot for the Commodores. But upon his arrival to Booneville, Dukes real-

ized that he had to decide between defense and offense in order to help the Tigers win and de-cided to refocus his motives from being a stand-out, two-way starter, to just simply playing a role on one side of the ball in college. “When I came up here, I talked with the coach-

es about if I should play offense or defense and they told me I had a safety named Brynden Tra-wick (a 6-3, 225-pound Division I transfer) in front of me,” Dukes said. “They said it would be best if I played wide receiver to help the team out at that time, so that’s what I decided to do.”Dukes’ unselfish move as a freshman has

helped turn the sophomore’s second season as a Tiger into success with the Tigers getting off to their best start since 2005 with Dukes hauling in 10 passes in Northeast’s first five games of the season for 130 yards and two scores.Dukes enters Northeast’s Homecoming match-

up with East Mississippi averaging 26 yards per game and 13 yards per catch.“It feels good to be undefeated and to know I

am doing my part to help,” Dukes said. “Last year we had a 5-4 record and this year we are starting off 5-0. So far it is just going the right

way for us this year.”While Dukes made the switch from linebacker/

safety to wide receiver, it was a move during his high school career that got the Northeast coach-es’ attention to recruit him as a football player.“Once I transferred from Sheffield High School

in Memphis and came to Oxford, I just liked football more,” said Dukes, who also played baseball and basketball. “I just love the contact, the physical emotions and…you can take your anger out on another person and you really can’t do that in those other two sports.”The decision to focus on football was also

made easier for Dukes, who had a family mem-ber make it to the National Football League (NFL), which would serve as motivation for anyone. “My cousin Jeffrey Dukes went to the Uni-

versity of Alabama and played for the St. Louis Rams,” Dukes said. “My family has always showed us the right way to do things and been there for us so I just learned to trust my instincts with football.”Dukes knows that if he wants to follow in his

relative’s footsteps, he needs to follow more than just his cousin’s on the field play but also needs to follow the way he gave up his some social time to concentrate on academics. “Once we get out of practice in the evenings,

I go to my room and study, because I know that

my academics will always be something to fall back on no matter what happens with football,” Dukes said. Studying may not seem like the ‘cool’ thing to

do but Dukes does make time for a social life after his responsibilities are taken care of first.Dukes knows that with his family support, his

coaches positive influence, and with lots of hard work on and off the gridiron, he can succeed at anything the Northeast sophomore sets his mind to -- even if it means getting a call back to de-fense in the middle of the season this year. After all . . . he did record 57 tackles, three

interceptions, a fumble recovery, and caused a fumble in one of Mississippi’s most competitive high school classifications just two years ago.

Notes: Northeast and East Mississippi have met 50 times dating back to 1951 with Lions holding the overall series 32-18 however, it was the Tigers that escaped from Scooba dur-ing the 2010 season with a 49-42 win over the Lions in a shootout. During the 2010 contest, Northeast running back Jaquise Cook (Ripley) ran for 267 yards and four scores against the Lions in a performance that would later get the Tiger named the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Player. North-east and East Mississippi played twice during the 1953 season. The Tigers opened the sea-son with the Lions in Columbus on September 5 and then hosted the Lions in Booneville on October 31.
