Craig King is in his third season as head coach of the men’s golf team at Tennessee Tech in 2010-11. King, 52, played for Tech from 1979 to 1981, graduated from TTU in 1982, has been a PGA member since 1987, and played and worked in the golf business in New York, Arizona, Florida and Tennessee. He played his college golf at Tennessee Tech under legendary coach Bobby Nichols, and returns to his alma mater looking to con-tinue the traditions and legacies of his former coach. Craig King has been a familiar name in the Cookeville golfing community from the time he was a teenager. He was a three-year letterman under coach Ken Honea at Cookeville High School and was a two-time all-district selection for the Cavaliers, winning medalist honors at the district tournament as a senior. After high school, he enrolled at the University of Florida where he was a member of the Gator’s freshman golf team for one semester before transferring to Tech in January 1978 and joining the Golden Eagle squad. While King sat out one year due to transfer rules, the Tech golf team underwent a transition, with M.P. Quil-len taking over the coaching duties for one year before former Golden Eagle standout Bobby Nichols was named head coach. King played three seasons for the Golden Eagles under Nichols’ guidance before graduating in 1982 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He earned all-OVC honors as a junior in 1981, finishing third overall at the conference championship. He was medalist in three tournaments in a row in 1981, and ranks second in Tech history for most career medalist honors. King turned professional following graduation and played on pro tours in Florida and Arizona, and spent four years as an assistant golf pro at The Concord Resort in Kiamesha Lake, New York, under TTU Hall of Fame mem-ber, Hubert Smith. He was in Arizona from 1984 to 1989 as assistant golf pro at Desert Highland Golf Club and Superstition Springs Golf Club, then became the head golf pro at Windstone Golf Club in Ringgold, Ga., in 1989.

In 1993, he returned to Cookeville , and spent a year designing and constructing CK’s Golf Center, which was a popular par three golf course from 1995 to 1999. Since 2000, King has worked as an administrator at the Cookev-ille Regional Medical Center. “We are pleased and honored that Craig King is our new men’s golf head coach,” said Mark Wilson, Tech Director of Athletics, upon the naming of King. “I know that he will build upon the great founda-tion and tradition that Bobby Nichols established, and we will have a championship level program under coach King, both academically and athletically.”

There's no question Tennessee Tech University is a great place to getan education. And Cookeville is a great college town. The largestmicropolitan area in Tennessee and one of the top 40 micropolitan

areas in the nation, Cookeville has consistently been rated among the top 10most affordable regions in the nation.

Cookeville boasts a mild climate, with an average temperature of 57 and fourdistinct seasons. Located within a day's drive of 75 percent of the nation'spopulation, Cookeville is just off Interstate 40, which runs from the east coastto California. City life is easily accessible, as well, because Cookeville is situat-ed within 100 miles of Nashville, Knoxville and Chattanooga — three ofTennessee's major metropolitan areas.

The seat of Putnam County, Cookeville is the heart of a three-county allianceknown as the Highlands, which centers Tennessee's 14-county UpperCumberland region. We have hundreds of acres of unspoiled nature —from championship golf courses to natural preserves, state parks andtop-rated lakes — close to home. There's plenty of nature inside the city lim-its, too; the City of Cookeville tends nine parks, including Cane Creek Park, a262-acre natural area with a 56-acre lake.

And while Cookeville is a relatively small town, we have no lack of culture. Weare one of the smallest cities in the U.S. with a full-blown symphonyorchestra, and our area attracts visual artists and craftspeople from acrossthe nation, thanks to the Appalachian Center for Craft, a satellite campus ofTTU. Drama also takes center stage here, with the 456-seat CookevillePerforming Arts Center cranking out productions year-round, including theaward-winning Drama Center Backstage series.

Cookeville is home to three museums — the Cookeville Depot Museum, theCookeville History Museum and the Cookeville Children's Museum —and a year-round slate of events, including regular excursion trains and theannual Fall FunFest. A walkable downtown shopping district and animpressive roster of national chain stores give the retail segment a small-townfeel with big-city convenience. Add to that our more than 100 restaurantsand 1,400 hotel rooms, and you'll quickly see that Cookeville offers some-thing for everyone.

Now in her third year as head coach of the Tennessee Tech wom-en’s golf team, Brandy Stout played at Tennessee Tech under legend-ary coach Bobby Nichols. She was named head coach in July 2008 and is hoping to continue the traditions and legacies of her former coach. Stout, 27, was a member of the Tech women’s squad from 2001 to 2005, graduated in 2006, and taught golf in Cookeville for two years before embarking on her collegiate coaching career. “We are pleased and honored to announce that Brandy Stout has accepted the position of women’s golf head coach,” said Mark Wilson, TTU Director of Athletics. “I know that she will build upon the great foundation and tradition that Bobby Nichols established, and we will have a championship level women’s golf program, both academically and athletically.”

Stout was a standout high school player, earning four letters at Lenoir City High School under coach Janet McGhee, a former Tech women’s basketball player. As a freshman, she was regional medalist and Player of the Year, and finished 15th individually at the TSSAA state tournament. She was also the regional medalist in 1998 and 2000, and finished third in 1999. She moved up the standings each year at the state tournament, finishing 14th as a sophomore, 11th as a junior and sixth as a senior. Stout earned two all-tournament honors in her career, including leading Tech to the championship of the Mercer Invitational as a fresh-man in 2002. That same year she won the team’s Impact Award, and as a senior she was named team co-captain by Nichols.

In 2006, she received her bachelor’s degree from Tech in Multidis-ciplinary Studies. She has held teaching positions at Ironwood, White Plains and Southern Hills golf courses in Cookeville since graduation, and has also worked at various golf clinics. “I am honored to be given this opportunity,” Stout said. “It’s been a dream of mine to be a collegiate golf coach, and to be able to take on the program that coach Nichols built makes it more special. “I understand what the current players have been through, and it’s important for them to have somebody who cares, not only for them individually, but to continue the legacy established by Bobby Nichols,” she said.

Stout says she learned numerous lessons during her four seasons under Nichols’ guidance. “Coach Nichols taught us the right way to do things, and he taught us the honesty and respect for the game,” she said. “He taught us that golf is not just a sport, but it also teaches life lessons. He taught us that, as a member of the Tech golf team, you represent not only yourself, you also represent your coach, the rest of the team and the university. I hope that’s something I can carry on.”

A four-year letterwinner and one of the most successful players in the history of the Tech women’s golf program, Kylie Crouch returned to her alma mater to assist Bobby Nichols with coaching the program that she was a such a major part of during her playing career. In 2008, she continued that role under new head coach Brandy Stout. The 2010-11 campaign marks Crouch’s sixth year as an assistant coach. A native of Sparta, she earned her degree in multidisciplinary studies in December, 2001, finishing her undergraduate courses in 3 1/2 years. She enrolled in a master’s program in library science and played her final semester as a graduate student. As a player for the Golden Eagles, Crouch set the program’s standard by earning 12 all-tournament honors, more than any other player in the team’s history, and helped Tech capture the 2000 and 2001 OVC championships.. She was also a three-time tournament medalist, win-ning top honors at the 1999 Great Smokies Collegiate, the 2000 APSU Precept Invitational and the 2001 EKU Lady Colonel Classic. She was named the team MVP following the 1999 and 2001 seasons, and also was named Most Dedicated in both years. Crouch was chosen the Most Improved Player on the TTU squad in both 1998 and 1999. In her final season, while serving as team co-captain, she posted the low average of 76.8 and won her second Best Putter Award. Following graduation, she was a teaching professional in Franklin, Tenn., and served as the Program Director for the Tennessee Golf Foundation at Golf House. In addition to serving as assistant coach for the Golden Eagles, she also operates a real estate appraisal business.

Athletics Administration

University President - Florida 1969

Dr. Robert (Bob) Bell, now in his 11th year as President of Tennessee Tech, is an avid supporter of TTU and Ohio Val-ley Conference sports. He currently chairs the OVC President’s Board of Directors. Bell became TTU’s President in 2000 after serving as dean, associate dean, assistant dean, and a chairperson in the university’s College of Business. After tak-ing the post, he oversaw the reorganiza-tion of the athletics department, bringing

in a full-time athletic director for the first time in almost 20 years. He has also been involved in statewide economic develop-ment on behalf of the Tennessee Higher Education Commission, work-ing on the THEC master plan focusing on links among higher educa-tion and stakeholders in business, health care and state government. Bell has served four terms on the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award’s Board of Examiners and was appointed a charter member of the Tennessee Center for Performance Excellence in 1992, serving on the group’s panel of judges from 1994 to 2005. He repre-sented Tennessee as a state delegate to the White House Conference on North American Free Trade Agreement in 1994 and spent two years as an economic development consultant for the nation of Mauritius.

Dr. Bell has served on or chaired a variety of professional, regional and national organizations, including the American Associa-tion of Collegiate Schools of Business International, the Southern Business Association, the North American Case Research Association, the Tennessee College Association, and a number of Tennessee higher education task forces, among others. In 2005, Bell was named the first recipient of the Ned R. McWherter Leadership Award, presented by the Tennessee Center for Performance Excellence. In the scholarly arena, he has been published extensively in the fields of management, organizational design, computer science and quality/productivity management, authoring two books and more than 70 articles, case studies and papers. Bell is also well known and respected in the Cookeville com-munity. He has chaired the Cookeville-Area Putnam County Chamber of Commerce’s board of directors, the Regional Quality Council and the Putnam Tomorrow Task Force for the Putnam County Commission. A past president of the local YMCA, Bell currently chairs the Cooke-ville Industrial Development Board and is a member of the Board of Directors for CityScape and Blood Assurance Corp. He has been an adult leader in the Boy Scouts of America since 1988 and serves on the executive board for the Middle Tennessee Council of BSA. He is also a member of the Cookeville Rotary and Evening Lions Clubs.

MARK WILSONDirector of Athletics - Maine 1991

Mark Wilson’s first six years as Director of Athletics at Tennessee Tech have been highlighted by vision, energy, and enthusiasm. Those factors have facili-tated growth and excellence in all areas and have placed the focus on generating a better student-athlete experience. Wilson is currently serving an appointment on the NCAA Leadership Council through April, 2011. It gives the Ohio Valley Conference, TTU and Wilson

a voice in a variety of strategic decisions that can affect intercollegiate athletics. Wilson, 41, has led athletics to several milestone accomplishments during his first six years, including enhanced facilities and fund raising, high profile staff additions, and compliance and academic success. Under Wilson’s guidance, the program has continued to focus on the academic success of its student-athletes, with soaring numbers each semester on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll. Tech’s student-athletes have achieved their highest overall combined semester GPAs. Wilson also developed a strategic plan for Tech’s athletic facilities and has already seen some of those plans become reality. During the past three years Tech has completed several construction projects to athletic facilities, including resurfacing the outdoor tennis courts, a new natural grass practice field, installation of new turf in Tucker Stadium, renovating the running track, renovating the football offices, meet-ing rooms and locker rooms, and new lights at Tucker Stadium. Most recently, Athletics opened a spacious, new basketball office complex in

Eblen Center and construction is underway on an new Athletic Perfor-mance Center on the western edge of campus. Additional building plans call for a new student-athlete center. Another step achieved under Wilson’s direction has been in-creased fund raising and development efforts with the goal of provid-ing the necessary resources for Tech’s student-athletes, coaches and staff. All of those accomplishments have come while the department has continued to stay focused on compliance with all NCAA rules and regulations. Wilson was named Director of Athletics on July 1, 2004. He came to Tennessee Tech from Ohio University. Since his first day at Tech, Wilson has made rapid and steady progress. He began by restructuring the department and implement-ing plans for a better student-athlete experience. In addition, athletics launched a dynamic new website, gained NCAA certification and was found in complete compliance, created a far-reaching “WIN” program for academic success, opened an entertaining and popular Tailgate Park, and started plans for two capital projects. Before going to Ohio, Mark served as the Director of Athletic Marketing for the University of Massachusetts. He also worked as a graduate assistant in the UMass athletic department and interned with the Northwestern University ticketing and marketing departments. Wilson received his bachelor’s degree in 1991 from the University of Maine in physical education and health, and earned his master’s in sports management from the University of Massachusetts in 1994. Mark has two daughters, Katey (16) and Meaghan (11).

University Administration

The success of Tennessee Tech University’s athletic teams is tied closely to the academic progress of each student-athlete, and the academic performance of each Tech student-athlete is closely monitored by the coaching staff as well as an experienced staff in Academic Services. Tech’s student-athletes continue to excel in the classroom. Each semester, the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll pays tribute to more than 150 students in athletics, including athletes, trainers, managers and cheerleaders, and the overall GPA of the department has climbed steeply in the past seven semesters. Student-athletes are the most visible component of a university, entertaining thousands of fans, students, alumni, family and friends. Their athletic abilities and achievements are a focus for national attention, as athletic events not only bring back faithful alumni, but serve as a welcome mat to the university for potential new stu-dents. Student-athletes devote many hours to practice, conditioning and training in an effort to be the best they can be. These hours are not required by non-athletes in the student body, and these extra demands can compete with academics for the student-athlete’s time and energy. The Tech Athletics Department works to provide help with course content (through tutors and monitored study hours) as well as with time management and study skills and any other academic support services that will allow Tech student-athletes to maximize their academic potential.

Marilyn Borch-JensenAcademic Advisement Secretary

Tennessee Tech’s commitment to its student-athletes is evident. The support personnel and resources available provide Golden Eagle

student-athletes with the tools needed for success.

The “WIN” program: Work Intensely NowThe WIN Program was imple-mented in the fall semester of 2004 to provide additional support for freshmen and student-athletes whose gen-eral academic progress places them at risk for maintaining eligibility and graduating. The program involves the student-athlete, coach(es), academic advisor, tutors, and others to build academic skills for success. Participation in the program is primarily based on grades, and coaches or the academic advisor may recommend additional participation at any time. All incoming freshmen meet at least one time per week with their coach to discuss academic progress and needs as well as time management and study skill techniques. Other aspects of the program include monitored study hours, tutoring, and study skills workshops.

Dr. LANCE JASITTAssistant Athletics Director / Academics and Student Welfare

Dr. Lance Jasitt serves as Assistant Athletics Director for Academics and Student Welfare. He has served in compliance and administra-tive operations roles in the Tech Athletics Department since 1998. Dr. Jasitt plays a key role in the academic success of each of Tech’s varsity student-athletes, managers, and graduate assistants.

His primary goals are to provide guidance and academic resources to permit student-athletes to maintain their academic eligibility under NCAA rules and to progress to graduation. In this process, Dr. Jasitt serves as a primary liaison between coaches and faculty. A detail-oriented person and a diligent worker, Dr. Jasitt has developed a solid understanding of the operations of the Athletics Department, the staff and the needs of its student-athletes. In addition to his administrative role within Athletics, Dr. Jasitt is also highly involved in promoting reading and literacy at all age levels. He was the 2008-09 president of the TTU Council of the International Reading Association and is still actively involved in that organization. The Tennessee Tech strength and conditioning program is a blend of science, technology, nutrition and one-on-one attention to each athlete. Golden Eagle student-athletes make a year-round commitment to physically preparing to play their sport at the highest level. At TTU, a program is tailored to match each student-athlete’s individual needs with the sport-specific physical demands. This includes strength, speed, power, agility, flexibility, metabolic conditioning and motivation. This combination allows Tennessee Tech’s student-athletes to better reach their specific goals. Another major focus of the strength staff is the development of sport-specific speed, agility and conditioning.

CHIP PUGH Head Strength and Conditioning Coach

Chip Pugh is in his fifth year as Tennessee Tech’s strength and conditioning head coach. He oversees the physical development of student-athletes in all 14 sports, provid-ing support in building toward championships. Pugh served three years in the same position at Winthrop University where he cre-ated and developed a highly successful strength and conditioning program that helped win 12 conference championships. An alumnus of Ohio University, he was an offensive lineman on the football team while earning a bachelor’s degree in Sport Industry and a master’s degree in Physical Edu-cation.

Pugh believes that the qualities that athletes can develop in strength and conditioning will not only aid in their athletic development, but will also help them build quality character components necessary for life. A native of Parkersburg, W. Va., he began his coaching career at his alma mater as an assistant strength and conditioning coach where he primarily worked with men’s and women’s track, men’s and women’s swimming, and women’s soccer. He also assisted coach Ethan Reeve, currently the head strength and conditioning coach at Wake For-

est, with football while at Ohio. After leaving Ohio University he became the head

strength and conditioning coach for football at Marietta (Ohio) College, where he also worked as an assistant foot-ball coach. Additionally, during his two years at Marietta College he also served as a campus minister to the college.

Pugh is a certified member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches’ Association. He also holds the Club Coach certification through USA Weightlifting.

He is a Level-I certified CrossFit trainer and conducts personal training classes open to the public using the CrossFit methods.

Chip and his wife, the former Nicole Carey, were mar-ried July 29, 2000. They live in Cookeville, where they are active in sprint triathlons and CrossFit. They had their first child, Rory Love Pugh, on October 16, 2010.

Development of Core StrengthImagine the body is a 3-link chain with the head and arms being one link, the torso.trunk being the second link and the legs being the third link. If the core link (trunk/torso) is weak or inflexible, there is little chance of maximizing potential because all body movement stems from the core. Train using ground-based, multi-joint lifting versus machine lifting Most athletes participate in stand up power sports using many muscle groups at once. The emphasis of training should be on total body athleticism and flexibility rather than having body weight supported by a machine and forcing isolation of just one muscle group. By incorporating ground-based lifts and exercises that focus on the total body, the athlete becomes more prepared to use their whole body in sport skills.

Train for Power (which results in increased speed)Power = (Mass Moved x Distance)/time. The less time it takes to move a mass a certain distance, the higher the output. As seen in the above formula, an increase in speed of move-ments results in an increase in power. Train AthleticismMany factors are included in athleticism: strength, power, speed, agility, flexibility, coordination, fitness level and mental toughness are just a few. It is the goal to maximize an athlete’s overall athleticism.

Train as a Team When teams train together, it provides another opportunity to develop chemistry, teamwork, leadership skills and a com-petitive environment. Within this competitive environment, teams can work on mental toughness, attacking the weights and maintaining a positive attitude. By enabling athletes to work on these things as a team, it helps to promote a stron-ger sense of unity, therefore making it harder to “fold” under pressure.

Make workouts short and intenseThere are many philosophies on how to get athletes stron-ger, faster and more flexible. But, when combined, these philosophies have the same three underlying principles: a) The workouts should be highly organized b) The workouts should be short in duration c) The workouts should be extremely intense

The following are recommendations for athletes concerning days and times of strength training (including warm-ups): * In-season: 3 days / week; 30-40 minutes/workout * Post-season: 3-4 days / week; 45-60 minutes/workout * Pre-season: 4 days / week; 50-60 minutes/workout

Following Tech / Media Relations

Sports Information Student Support

Heading into his 29th year on the Tennessee Tech athletics staff, Rob Schabert is assistant athletics director for sports information and broadcasting. He joined the Tech staff on Sept. 8, 1982, and has been going full-speed ever since, working not only in publicizing Tech's student-athletes and staff but also in promotions and marketing for the athletics department. In September 2008 he was inducted into the Hall of Distinction at Minnesota State University (Mankato). An active member of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), he has attended the organization's annual workshop in 29 of his 33 years in the profession. He has served on numerous CoSIDA committees, including Ethics, Academic All-America and Writing, and he currently serves on the Olympic Liaison Committee. In 2004, he was voted winner of the university's Outstanding Professional Award, and in July 2005 was promoted to his current title. A tireless worker, Schabert has won dozens of national publications and writing awards, including "Best in the Nation" from USA Volleyball for his annual media guide six times. Schabert, 54, has established several programs within the department. He created the Athletic Director's Honor Roll in 1987 and initiated the President's Awards program in 1991. He also established the Woman of the Year/Man of the Year awards along with the Outstanding Male and Female Athlete awards. He is active in the TTU Sports Hall of Fame selection process and serves as the em-cee of the annual Hall of Fame Dinner. Schabert has promoted the selection of numerous Tech Academic All-Americans and is extremely active in promoting both the academic and athletic accomplishments of Tech's student-athletes. Another wing of his operation is the day-to-day production and operations of the vast Tech athletics web site, TTUsports.com. Rob and his staff also serve as the hosts to all media attending athletics events on campus. Over the past several years, many of the interns who have worked for Schabert have moved into full-time positions in the Sports Information profession at a wide variety of col-leges and universities, including Appalachian State, UAB, Xavier, Idaho and Texas State. A Minnesota native who learned the trade under the guidance of his father, Bob (a long-time Minnesota Sportswriter), Rob earned his bachelor's degree in mass commu-nications from St. Cloud (Minn.) State University in 1977, spent one year in the Minnesota Twins public relations office, and was SID for five years at Mankato State University. He was a charter member of the St. Cloud chapter of Sigma Delta Chi, the Society of Professional Journalist. In 2002, Rob was a volunteer with the Salt Lake Olympic Committee as a member of the Press Operations staff. Rob and his wife, Joan, have two grown children who are also in the business -- Matt (assistant SID at Morehead State) and Kristen (U.S. Army public affairs in Heidelberg, Ger-many). They also have one grandson, Jacob.

Nick Burns, 25, joined the Tennessee Tech Sports Information staff in July. He will serve as the primary contact for volleyball, women's basketball and softball, and the secondary contact for tennis and track. A native of Bloomington, Minn., he is a 2007 graduate of Minnesota State University, Mankato. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications with a public rela-tions emphasis. As an undergraduate, Burns was a reporter for the campus newspaper covering the men's and women's track and field and golf teams and writing feature stories. He also worked in the school’s athletic communications office helping with gameday services and writing. From 2007 to 2009, Burns was a graduate assistant in the MSU athletic communications office, serving as the primary contact for the volleyball and women's basketball teams for two seasons, and the softball, men's and women's track and field and tennis teams for one season. He produced publications, was the in-game statistician for all Maverick home events, updated the athletic website and filled in as guest host of the weekly Maverick Magazine radio show. During the 2008-09 women's basketball season, Burns served as the primary contact when the team won the Division II NCAA National Championship in San Antonio. He has also worked at the WCHA Final Five.

Kate Nicewicz, 23, joined the Tech Sports Information staff in April. A native of Sauquoit, N.Y., she graduated from the University of Rochester in May of 2009 with a Bachelors degree in Communications and Marketing. At Rochester, Nicewicz participated in JV and Varsity soccer and worked as an assistant in the Sports Information office. While obtaining her B.A. in Communications, Nicewicz participated in an internship with MCLA the Lax Mag beginning in January of 2008, contributing nationally published content in the form of feature articles, team and player profiles, and game recaps. In May of 2008, she traveled to Dallas, Texas to provide live coverage for the 2008 Men’s Collegiate Lacrosse Association (MCLA) National Tourna-ment. Nicewicz also acted as a senior writer for the sports section of the Campus Times, UR’s campus-wide newspaper. At Tennessee Tech, Nicewicz will handle several aspects of media relations for the athletic department, including the production of publications, press releases and human-interest articles. She will provide game coverage and live stats and serve as the pri-mary contact for soccer, men’s basketball, and baseball, as well as secondary contact for men’s and women’s golf.
