WnBa cares Week of service – GeT serveD By THe sky The Chicago Sky hosted “Get Served by the Sky” at Buffalo Wild Wings in Mount Prospect on Tuesday, May 31 at 6:00 p.m. to raise money for the American Diabetes Association (ADA).

During “Get Served by the Sky” the entire Sky team and coaching staff waited tables and bartended to collect tips that were donated directly to the ADA. The event that was open to the public provided Sky fans with the chance to get autographs and photos with the players, all for a tip. The team also hosted a raffle where fans won unique autographed Sky experiences and memorabilia.

Sky fans, their friends and families were invited to attend this event which was part of WNBA Cares Week of Service. For many fans this was a chance to interact with the entire Sky team and meet our recently drafted rookies and new additions to the roster while at the same time raising funds for a cause that is important to Head Coach Pokey Chatman.

Go GreenAs part of WNBA’s Go Green Week, Chicago Sky players and staff traveled to Northside Preparatory High School and partnered with Urban Habitat Chicago to cultivate an urban garden. Chicago Sky players Lindsay Wisdom-Hylton, Tamera Young and Carolyn Swords and Sky staff along with students and members of the girl’s basket-ball team from Northside Prep helped turn Northside’s grounds into a sustainable urban farm.

anTi-crUeLTy socieTyOn June 6th the players participated in a photo shoot with the Anti-Cruelty Society. Starting in July a calendar featuring the players and pets from the Anti-Cruelty Society were sold for a $15 donation. Money raised was donated to the Anti-Cruelty Society and Sky Cares. The Anti-Cruelty Society also brought out a few dogs in need of adoption to the August 28th game. We are happy to report that one of the dogs found a loving home while visiting the Sky.

sky cares fiTness fesTivaL The Chicago Sky Cares Fitness Festival took place prior to the July 19th game.

The fitness festival plus an in-game experience is designed to show youth 7-16 ways to get active. The Sky Cares Foundation works with local organizations (Girls in the Game, Girls on the Run, GoGirlGo Chicago, Step Up Women’s Network, Chicago Park District and the Mayor’s Fitness Council as well as Chicago Public Schools) to identify youth from low income areas of Chicago and welcome them into an inspiring community of positive role-model volunteers. During the fitness festival various organizations show the kids how to get moving whether it’s playing a sport, dancing or jumping double-dutch. At each station, the kids watched and participated in demonstrations and interacted with instructors, with the goal of helping them make a fitness plan. Following a hot afternoon at the fitness festival, the 1,000 youth participated in the excitement of a Chicago Sky game which afforded an unforgettable opportunity for these youth to witness firsthand the power and poise of professional female athletes and provided a motivating message of what can be accomplished through dedication, determination and discipline.

anTi-BULLyinG At the July 30th game as a means to raise awareness to bullying the Sky teamed up with Illinois Safe Schools Alliance, Trevor Project, Affinity Youth Project, Center on Halsted and Howard Brown Health Center’s Broadway Youth project to host a restorative justice workshop. Fans were also asked to sign an anti-bullying pledge at the game.

BreasT HeaLTH aWareness niGHT For fifteen years, the WNBA Breast Health Awareness program has focused on generating awareness and educating women about breast cancer in addition to raising funds for the initiative. The WNBA and its teams have raised over $2.5 million to aid in the fight against breast cancer. The Chicago Sky partnered this season with the Chicagoland Area Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure. As part of this partnership the Sky created a Pink ticket package which included a ticket to the August 7th game, a pink Sky t-shirt and for every Pink package sold, the Chicago Sky donated $5.00 to Chicagoland Area Affiliate of Susan G Komen for the Cure. The money collected by Komen goes to education, research, training and screening to eradicate breast cancer.

As part of the day’s festivities, the Sky players wore pink uniforms, and the Sky encouraged all fans to wear pink in an effort to “pink out” the arena. At the game, breast cancer survivors were honored guests, and a silent auction took place where fans had a chance to bid on the pink game jerseys, numerous sports experiences and autographed memorabilia from teams and athletes from the Chicagoland area as well as the WNBA. All of these proceeds were donated to Chicagoland Area Affiliate of Susan G Komen for the Cure.

The Sky is proud to announce that through our efforts and with the help of the fans we raised $5,000 for the Chicagoland Area Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
