AN OPPORTUNITY (or two)
In addition to supporting the club’s MS-150 (now Bike
MS) team by pledging at last week’s meeting, the team
has invited you to join their final shakedown ride this Sat-
urday. Get our your bike and meet them at the Safeway
parking lot at 7:30 am. The route was in Ken’s message
this week. The real ride will be on June 25 and 26.
TODAY IN HISTORY
On June 16, 1858 Abraham Lincoln gave an address in Springfield, Illinois accepting
the Illinois Republican Party’s nomination to be it’s candidate for the U.S. Senate. His
bid was unsuccessful, but his speech was memorable.
“A house divided against itself cannot stand.”
I believe this government cannot endure, permanently half slave and half free.
I do not expect the Union to be dissolved—I do not expect the house to fall—but
I do expect it will cease to be divided.
It will become all one thing or all the other.
Either the opponents of slavery will arrest the further spread of it, and place it
where the public mind shall rest in the belief that it is in the course of ultimate extinc-
tion; or its advocates will push it forward, till it shall become alike lawful in all the
States, old as well as new—North as well as South.
This speech predicted that the antagonism between North and South over slavery “will
not cease until a crisis shall have been reached, and passed.”

THE FOUR-WAY TEST
Of the things we think, say or do:
Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and
BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all con-
cerned?

WHAT PAUL HARRIS SAID
"Respecting Others None of us controls our country of origin. Therefore, hold-ing people responsible for their nationality is totally unrea-sonable to the point of being irrational. Moreover, Paul Harris argues that all nationalities deserve respect. Like most profound ideas, the beauty of this idea is its simplicity.
“One’s religion is one’s own possession and he has a right to it. One’s nativity is not of his own choosing, but whatever it may be, it is entitled to respect; and all nations have [an] honorable place in the world’s family.”

FLAG ETIQUETTE QUIZ
(answers will be available on the club’s website and in next week’s Lamp-
lighter)
1. True or False? When the flags of two or more nations are displayed with
the American flag, they should all be displayed at the same height.
2. Yes or No? Is the below display correct and in accordance with the U.S.
Code?
3. In the above display which flag is raised first? Which is lowered last?
Rotary is becoming an important contributor to the continuing success of Walk for Life. In No-vember Colin Macfarlane spoke to 40 Clubs in District 5450 in Denver. The Rotary Club of Parker suggested a matching grant with a host Club in Dhaka. Progress was fast: The Rotary Club of Dhaka Buriganga agreed to become the host club. Colin visited Rotary HQ in Chicago and received encouragement to continue with the grant application Bob Forbes reports that the grant will be for $75,000. Thirteen clubs in three countries are on board. As the lead club, we need to show that this is a priority for us by stepping up with our pledges. Look forward to an opportunity to participate by signing up on another clipboard this week.

A GARY MERAZ TRUE STORY A mobster discovers that his deaf accountant has cheated him
out of 10 million bucks. He confronts him, bringing along an
interpreter. “Ask him where the money is,” the mobster says.
The interpreter does so, and the accountant signs back, “What
are you talking about?”
The interpreter tells the godfather, “He says he doesn’t know what you’re talking about.”
The mobster puts a pistol to the bookkeeper’s head. “Ask him again!”
The interpreter signs, “He’ll kill you if you don’t tell him!”
“Okay, okay!” the bookkeeper signs back. “The money is buried behind the shed in my
cousin Enzo’s backyard!”
What’d he say?” asks the don.
“He says you don’t have the guts to pull the trigger.”
