The 2010-11 campaign will go down as one of the most overall successful years in Seawolf Athletics history. Ten of 11 UAA teams ad-vanced in postseason competition, including the second-ever WCHA Final Five appearance for hockey. Men’s and women’s basketball, cross country and track & field all made NCAA appearances, along with volleyball and skiing. And when the numbers came out at season’s end, UAA ranked among the top 10 percent of all NCAA Division II programs in the nation, finishing 26th of 281 schools in the NACDA Director’s Cup standings. In the classroom, Seawolves from all sports com-bined for a stellar 3.12 overall grade-point av-erage in calendar year 2010, marking the 14th time in the last 17 years that the 3.0 barrier has been broken. Women's Basketball The Seawolves continued their amazing five-year run with a 27-7 overall record, a 2nd Round NCAA Tournament berth, and the title of the inaugural GNAC Tournament. At sea-son’s end, UAA garnered a No. 15 national ranking and now owns the longest top-25 streak — 65 weeks — in all of NCAA Divi-sion II. The Seawolves won the title of the season-opening Disney’s Tip-Off Classic in California and came just four points shy of their fifth straight Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout title. UAA posted a runner-up finish

in the GNAC regular-season race with a 14-4 record, but avenged a pair of losses to West-ern Washington by snapping the Vikings’ 26-game home win streak in the GNAC Tourna-ment title game and beating WWU again in the NCAA 1st Round. Junior forward Hanna Johansson was an all-region and All-GNAC First Team selection, while senior point guard Kaitlin McBride and sophomore forward Alysa Horn were both All-GNAC Second Teamers. Men's Basketball Led by a trio of senior starters, the Seawolves returned to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2008 and equaled the se-cond-most victories in program history with a 24-10 record. UAA finished run-ner-up in both the GNAC regular sea-son and the postsea-son tournament, leading to a first-round upset of 6th-ranked Humboldt State in the NCAAs; the Seawolves were knocked out by BYU-Hawaii, which went on to play in the national title game. The men pro-duced victories over Division I clubs Ball State and Houston Bap-tist in the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout, and also had a road win over nation-ally ranked Central Washington to their credit. Junior center Taylor Rohde was an All-GNAC First Team and All-Region Second Team se-lection, while senior wing Brandon Walker was an All-GNAC Second Team honoree.

Men’s & Women’s Cross Country The cross country teams wrapped up their third straight appearances at the NCAAs with a 6th-place finish on the wom-en’s side and a program-best 8th-place result on the men’s side, while landing a program-best four runners on the All-A m e r i c a t e a m s . Throughout the season, the teams combined for 10 team victories, in-cluding a first-ever sweep of the Great Northwest Athletic Con-ference Championships and the NCAA Div. II West Region Champi-onships. Both teams claimed program-best national ranks, as the women’s team spent three weeks at No. 3 and the men’s team land-ed a No. 6 ranking at the end of the season. Senior Marko Cheseto completed his senior year with six individual titles — including a third straight conference title — and his se-cond West Region title, earning him both GNAC and West Region Male Runner of the Year honors, while junior Ruth Keino became the highest-placing Seawolf at the NCAAs when she finished seventh in December. For the first time head coach Michael Friess swept the GNAC Coach of the Year honors, as well as the West Region Coach of the Year awards. Gymnastics After a slow start, the Seawolf gymnasts fin-ished strong by topping the 190-point mark in their final five meets. UAA earned a home victory over Centenary on Mar. 11, then two days later posted 192.575 points to mark the

6th-best score in program history and the 2nd-best ever in a home meet. At the MPSF Cham-pionships, team captain Kelsey Fullerton be-came just the third Seawolf to earn multiple titles in her career as she scored a winning 9.825 on floor exercise. Senior Maria Puricel-li, meanwhile, finished with the No. 2 season bars average (9.650) all-time at UAA and was among six Seawolves to earn a place on the MPSF All-Academic Team. Hockey The 2010-11 Seawolf hockey team completed the season with a 16-18-3 overall record, marking its most victories since becoming a member of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The Seawolves also posted the second-best conference record to date at 12-14-2. UAA completed the conference season tied

for 8th with St. Cloud State with 28 points and received the 8th-place seed in the WCHA First Round. The Seawolves went on to sweep Minnesota on the road in the First Round, earning themselves UAA’s second-ever berth to the WCHA Final Five. Throughout the sea-son, the Seawolves posted upsets over nation-ally ranked Wisconsin, Colorado College, Ne-braska-Omaha and Minnesota.

Men's & Women's Skiing The 2011 edition of the men’s and women’s ski team qualified 11 individuals to the NCAA Championships in Stowe, Vt., on March 9-12, where they finished 7th in the team standings. Individually, the Seawolves captured five All-America placings, as juniors Jaime Bronga and Alex Parker and freshman Erik Bjornsen posted podium finishes. At the NCAA West Region Championships, the Seawolves fin-ished 5th overall and landed five individuals on the All-RMISA Second Team. Academi-cally, UAA registered 13 student-athletes to the 2011 National Ski Coaches Association All-Academic Team. During the season, the Seawolves posted a season-high 3rd-place team finish at the New Mexico Invitational on Feb. 4-5.

Men’s & Women’s Track and Field UAA wrapped up another successful season with five All-Americans at the 2011 NCAA Div. II Outdoor Track & Field Champion-ships. The Seawolf men finished 19th in the team standings, m a r k i n g t h r e e straight seasons in the top 20 at Nation-als. Leading the pack at the NCAAs was the West Region Male Track Athlete of the Year, Alfred Kangogo, who col-lected a podium fin-ish with a 3rd-place showing in the 1,500 meters. Senior David Registe (LJ), sophomore Micah Chelimo (steeplechase), sophomore Ruth Keino (10,000) and freshman Susan Bick (800) were UAA’s other All-Americans. At the GNAC Championships, Registe was named the Most Outstanding Male Performer after posting a meet record with 30 individual points and becoming the first athlete to win five titles (including two relays) in a single conference meet. Meanwhile, three other indi-vidual came away with GNAC titles, while both the men’s 4x100-meter relay and 4x400-meter relay teams brought home the gold. Throughout the season, the Seawolves com-bined for 19 school records (9 women, 10 men), while placing 13 athletes on the inaugu-ral USTFCCCA Track & Field Div. II All-Region Team.

The Seawolves, who reached as high as No. 23 in the AVCA national rank-ings, posted three victories over ranked teams, including a 3-0 upset of 2nd-ranked and eventu-al West Region champion Cal State-San Ber-nardino on Sept. 4. Individually, senior middle blocker Cortney Lundberg earned AVCA hon-orable mention All-America, All-West Region and 1st Team All-GNAC honors, while junior outside hitter Jackie Matthisen and freshman middle blocker Robyn Burton were both 2nd Team All-GNAC choices.

In 1993, the University of Alaska Anchorage hockey program became a full-fledged member of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

Begun in 1952, the WCHA has established itself as the premier collegiate hockey conference in the country. With the addition of Nebraska-Omaha and Bemidji State in 2010-11, the league membership has risen to 12 teams.

The WCHA leads the nation in national cham-pions, NCAA Championship winning percentage and NCAA Frozen Four appearances (95).

The WCHA perennially leads the nation in college hockey attendance and has attracted more than one million fans each of the last ten years – becoming the first collegiate hockey conference to do so. This past season, WCHA teams attracted 1,734,275 fans.

On the ice, the WCHA has produced more National Hockey League players (more than 300) and Olympians than any other conference. That list includes the likes of Chris Chelios, Ed Belfour, Tony Esposito, Brett Hull, Mike Richter, Matt Carle, Curtis Joseph, Tomas Vanek, Glenn Ander-son, Jordan Leopold, Jonathan Toews, Zach Parise and UAA’s own Curtis Glencross.

League teams compete in some of the finest arenas in all of college hockey, including Minne-sota’s Mariucci Arena, North Dakota’s Englestad Arena, Wisconsin’s Kohl Center, Colorado Col-lege’s World Arena, Denver’s Magness Arena and UAA’s own Sullivan Arena.

The annual conference playoff championship, now known as the WCHA Final Five, continues to be one of the most successful postseason college tournaments of its kind.

Success In The Classroom At the University of Alaska Anchorage, we take great pride

in the academic achievements of our student-athletes. On the average UAA student-athletes have maintained a cumulative grade point average of better than 3.0 in 14 of the past 17 years — well ahead of the norm for all students. Seawolf Corporate Sponsors have had a direct bearing on our academic success, including the donation of laptop computers for student-athletes to use during road trips. Following is snapshot information on our student-athletes’ success in the classroom.

Community Outreach

A DOPT A UNIVERSITY…The depart-ment sponsors an “Adopt a University”

program with Anchorage and Mat-Su Valley public high schools as well as some Anchor-age-area private schools for the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout. The pro-gram allows extensive interaction between visiting Shootout teams and local high school students. Students can learn more about their adopted university while offering support through cheerleaders, band, trainers and sports information. The local schools may also get involved with providing supple-mental practice sites, as well as the Thanks-giving Dinner program.

S UPPORT FOR NON-PROFITS…Each year UAA Athletics adopts a non-

profit program – generally focusing on health and/or youth issues – to support on a depart-ment-wide basis. Our current non-profit part-ner is the Children’s Hospital at Providence Hospital. In the past, UAA Athletics has sup-ported programs such as Nothing But Nets, Shots for Tots, Alaska Special Olympics, Alaska SafeKids, The V Foundation, the Muscular Dystrophy Association, Anchorage Center for Families, the Anchorage Immun-ization Partners Coalition, Children’s Miracle Network, Life Alaska and the Alaska Litera-cy Program.

A THLETIC SPEAKERS BUREAU…The department’s coaches and adminis-

trators are frequent speakers at youth team banquets and civic organization luncheons, promoting Seawolf athletics in addition to educating the public about key issues in col-lege athletics.

R EADING WITH THE SEA-WOLVES...For years UAA student-

athletes have been active in the community, especially through reading programs at An-chorage-area elementary schools. That activi-ty has been formalized in a program called Reading With The Seawolves, whereby a cross-section of student-athletes visit differ-ent elementary schools each year to share their favorite children’s books.

S CHOOL CLINICS…The department’s coaches are frequent speakers at clinics

throughout the state, sharing their expertise with elementary and secondary school coach-es seeking to enhance their skills.

W OMEN’S VOLLEYBALL, HOOPS CLINICS…The women’s volleyball

and basketball teams have been active with such activities as post-game clinics and Jun-ior High and Girl Scout Nights at home con-tests.

T ICKET DONATIONS…The department provides tickets and door prizes to ele-

mentary schools for programs that promote academic achievement.

S PORTS CAMPS...Each summer UAA coaches host a variety of youth skills

camps that are both fun and challenging. Among others, these include the popular Kendall Jump Shot basketball camp under the direction of men’s basketball head coach Rusty Osborne and the Seawolf Volleyball Camps under the direction of Chris Green.

NCAA Rules For Sponsors

Q Who is a “representative of the institu-tion's athletics interests”?

A Any individual who is a member of the institu-tion’s athletics booster club, has made dona-

tions to the booster club or the athletics department, is involved in any manner in recruiting prospects or in providing benefits (e.g., summer jobs) to enrolled student-athletes, or is otherwise involved in promot-ing the institution’s athletics program.

Q Is the institution responsible for the acts of athletics representatives and booster sup-

port groups?

A Yes.

Q What could happen if a sponsor violates an NCAA rule?

A In addition to any sanctions meted out to the University, sponsors or boosters could also

forfeit benefits or privileges if they have engaged in conduct that is determined to be a violation of NCAA legislation.

Q Is it permissible for a sponsor to provide to a student-athlete or friend any benefit or

special arrangement?

A No. The NCAA considers these arrangements as an “extra benefit,” and they are specifically

prohibited. Examples of extra benefits include but are not limited to the following. 1. Special discount payment arrangement, or credit on a purchase (e.g., airline ticket, clothing). 2. Services (e.g., laundry, dry cleaning, tailoring). 3. A loan of money in any amount. 4. A guarantee or bond. 5. The use of an automobile. 6. The purchase of meals or services at commer-cial establishments. 7. Transportation to or from a summer job. 8. A benefit connected with off-campus housing (e.g., individual television sets or stereo equip-ment, specialized recreational facilities, room fur-nishings or appointments of extra quality or quan-tity.). 9. Signing or cosigning a note with an outside agency to arrange a loan. 10. Selling or giving a student-athlete tickets to an athletics, institution or community event. 11. The use of personal properties (e.g., boats, summer homes, cars, stereos) 12. Providing Christmas or birthday gifts. 13. Permitting use of and payment for long dis-tance telephone calls.

The information contained on this page is de-signed to provide a brief summary of NCAA rules and regulations for “representatives of the University of Alaska Anchorage interests,” which include corporate sponsors.

According to the NCAA, the control and conduct of UAA’s intercollegiate athletics program shall in-clude being held accountable for the acts of all individ-uals that have been identified as “athletic representa-tives.”

This information should be considered only as a guide to a general understanding of the NCAA rules with a view to avoiding involvement in a violation of NCAA legislation which might result in the loss of an individual’s eligibility or disciplinary action against UAA.

We strongly suggest that if you are not absolutely certain about an NCAA rule, contact the UAA Athletics Department before proceeding.

- Steve Cobb, EdD Director of Athletics
